INTRODUCTION

Following the screening of the Lumière movingpictures in London (1895) cinema became asensation across Europe and by July 1896 theLumière films had been in show in Mumbai. The firstshort films in India were directed by Hiralal Sen,starting with The Flower of Persia (1898).

The provision of 100% foreign direct investment hasmade the Indian film market attractive for foreignenterprises such as 20th Century Fox, Sony Pictures,Walt Disney Pictures and Warner Bros. Indianenterprises such as , dharma production,red chillyproduction, and Sun Network's sun pictures.

Indian cinema covers Bengali cinema, Bhojpuricinema ,Gujarati cinema, Hindi cinema, Oriyacinema, Punjabi cinema, Sindhi Cinema, Tamilcinema, Telugu cinema etc…

  History

The first full-length motion picture in India wasproduced by Dadasaheb Phalke was RajaHarishchandra (1913), a silent film in Marathi.

Ardeshir Irani released Alam Ara which was thefirst Indian talking film in 1931.

the period from the late 1940s to the 1960s areregarded by film historians as the 'Golden Age' ofIndian cinema.

India is the world's largest producer of films. In2009, India produced a total of 2961 films.
