HT Correspondentn [email protected]

NEW DELHI : In a country where

over 40% of the populace is under

the age of 24 years, the youth can

be influential torchbearers of

change for the nation. Armed

with information available at

their fingertips, these young-

sters can then amplify voices

from different sections of soci-

ety, building a movement for

change.

In order to encourage and pro-

vide youngsters with a platform

to raise their voices and explore

opposing points of view, Federal

Bank, in partnership with Hin-

dustan Times and Hindustan, is

launching Speak For India Delhi

Edition 2019.

The state-level debate compe-

tition, a flagship CSR initiative of

Federal Bank, offers college stu-

dents across Delhi-NCR an

opportunity to explore, articu-

late and voice their perspectives

on contemporary issues through

debates.

The journey of Speak For

India started in 2014 when the

board of directors of the Bank

decided to launch an activity

that aims at empowering the

youth of this country. In the last

five years, Speak For India was

held in different parts of the

country including Kerala, Tamil

Nadu, Karnataka and Maha-

rashtra. In 2018, over two lakh

students from 4,450 colleges

across four states participated in

the contest which saw 12 win-

ners in different categories.

What began as a corporate

social responsibility initiative,

has now grown into a vibrant

platform giving the youth an

opportunity to do an in-depth

ber 10. The initial screening will

be done through auditions at

sub-zonal level across 12-15 cen-

tres in NCR following which

shortlisted candidates will com-

pete at four zonal auditions.

Approximately 30 participants

will be shortlisted from the

above for semi-finals and eight

finalists compete in the grand

finale attended by renowned fig-

ures in Delhi-NCR. The finale

will be telecast on TV as well.

The winner gets a cash prize of

₹1.5 lakh, a scholarship of ₹ 50,000

and college reward worth

₹25,000. The first runner up will

also get a cash prize of ₹1 lakh

and ₹20,000 college reward.

Apart from this, there is also a

category of popular choice

award with a cash prize of ₹80,000

and consolation cash prize for

five participants of ₹25,000.

“Speak for India is an initia-

tive for giving the students a

platform for developing and

acknowledging their oratory

skills,” said Raju Hormis, head of

corporate social responsibility,

Federal Bank. “From this year,

apart from Delhi, Speak for India

will be present across West Ben-

gal and Gujarat.”

“Speak for India Delhi Edition

2019 will provide a lively and rel-

evant platform for young people

to engage with and talk about the

important issues in our country

today,” said Soumya Bhatta-

charya, Managing Editor, Hin-

dustan Times.

Man stabbed in Kirti Nagar for objecting to lewd remarksNEW DELHI : A 29-year-old man was

stabbed multiple times by four

men when he allegedly asked

them to stop passing lewd

remarks on his female friend

when they were visiting a conve-

nience store in west Delhi’s Kirti

Nagar area early Tuesday.

Police said they had registered

a case . The man’s condition is sta-

ble, police said.

The incident took place around

5.30 am when one Shabir Alam,

an accountant at a restaurant in

Moti Nagar, was out with his

female friend and another friend

Sajjad to visit a store.

Sajjad said soon as they

reached the shop, four men

arrived on two two-wheelers.

“One of the men made an obscene

remark on Alam’s girlfriend.

Alam heard it and an argument

started between him and one of

the four men. Alam slapped one of

them as the argument turned vio-

lent. One of them took out a sharp

knife-like thing and stabbed

Alam multiple times,” he said.

Sajjad said before he could

raise an alarm, the men fled .

Additional deputy commis-

sioner of police (west) Sameer

Sharma said they received a PCR

call at the Kirti Nagar police sta-

tion about the stabbing. HTC

President Kovind rejects plea to disqualify 11 AAP legislatorsHT Correspondent n [email protected]

NEW DELHI : President Ram Nath

Kovind has rejected a plea to dis-

qualify 11 Aam Aadmi Party

(AAP) MLAs on the grounds of

holding offices of profit.

Delhi chief minister and AAP

Convener Arvind Kejriwal wel-

comed the move, saying “truth

always prevails”.

The order issued on October 28

was in response to a 2017 plea filed

by BJP leader Vivek Garg who

demanded disqualification of the

MLAs for holding the posts of

co-chairpersons of the Delhi Dis-

aster Management Authority

(DDMA) while being members of

the legislative assembly.

The 11 MLAs against whom

the petition was filed are Kailash

Gahlot, who is also the state

transport and environment min-

ister, Sanjeev Jha, Nitin Tyagi,

Praveen Kumar, Pawan Kumar

Sharma, Dutt Sharma, Rajesh

Gupta, Sarita Singh, Dinesh

Mohania, Amanatullah Khan

and Jarnail Singh (Tilak Nagar).

Reacting to the order, Kejriwal

tweeted, “Satyamev Jayate! Ulti-

mately, truth prevails.”

After Garg filed his petition in

March, 2017, the Delhi govern-

ment had responded to the Elec-

tion Commission, saying the

co-chairpersons of DDMA were

not entitled to any remuneration

by way of salary, allowances, sit-

ting fee or any other facility such

as office space or cars.

In October, 2018, Kovind had

rejected another petition to dis-

qualify 27 AAP MLAs for alleg-

edly holding offices of profit by

being appointed as chairpersons

of Rogi Kalyan Samitis (RKS)

attached to various government-

run hospitals in Delhi.
