AGRICULTURE, Land and Rural Develop-ment Nelson Mandela Bay Regional DirectorProfessor Dan Sandi said his departmentwasworking hard to ensure that poverty was de-stroyed to the core in the regionandprovince.

To help them in the fight, this departmenthas signed a 10-year lease agreementwith theDepartment of Education for the unused Sis-onkeHigh School in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhageto be used by the Mothers Gift, an NGO thatis feeding hundreds of people in this poverty-striken township. The Mothers Gift have about 1 300 volun-

tially concentrated on the development offarms, small-holdings, rural and peri-urbanareas, they have realised that there was a lotof hunger in the townships with a very highunemployment rate.“The Mothers Gift are feeding the people -

doing exactly what we want to see. We alsobought them tools and seedlings to the tuneof R72 000 to ensure that they succeed in theirendeavours,” said Sandi, adding that theMothers Gift would use the land to grow vege-tables and fruit.“We are so excited. We’ll use the building

A Theodor Herzl High School teenager’s in-genious idea to turn empty crisp packets intoprotective ‘space’ blankets will help keep thehomeless warm and dry this winter and couldeven protect them from hypothermia.

The school is running a drive to collect hun-dreds of large and small empty plastic chippackets, which are then carefully sliced openand patched together to form windproof, wa-terproof blankets that will retain body heatin the same way that emergency first aid blan-kets do.

Grade 10 pupil Christie Vaughan (16) hadthe brainwave after a personal experiencewith hypothermia after she’d swum the Nel-son Mandela Bay Bell Buoy Challenge in Al-goa Bay last year.

“After my swim I was disorientated and theparamedics wrapped me in a space blanket.Within minutes I was feeling so hot! I am pas-sionate about charity and wanted to make a

difference in some way. When I investigatedthe material that space blankets are made of,I realised that chip packets are made of verysimilar silver plastic foil. Instead of justthrowing empty packets away, we could putthem to good use and help people too!” she ex-plained.

A space blanket is a plastic insulating bodywrapping which reflects back most of thebody heat lost by radiation. It is carried byclimbers and mountaineers in case of expo-sure, as well as by paramedics and otheremergency rescue workers.

Christie and her Theodor Herzl schoolfriend Sonali Madhoo embarked on a drive tocollect as many packets as possible, with re-cycling bins donated by Mpact Corrugatedset up around the primary and high schoolfor pupils to deposit their packets into. Theproject has also been adopted as one of Theo-dor Herzl’s Eco Club’s chief outreach activi-

ties and will contribute to Theodor Herzl’sstatus as an environmentally aware ‘GreenFlag’ school.

The teens have also encouraged otherschools to join the drive and plan to consultlocal communities via the school’s partner-ships with Walmer High School and the Nan-aga Village near Colchester about the bestway to distribute the blankets to the destituteonce produced.

“The more chip packets we collect, the few-er pile up in landfills and the more blanketswe can make to benefit more people,” Chris-tie said.

A HUSBAND and wife partnership ofMonde and Nomsa Wani will present a play,“Ours was the Dawn” at the Nelson Mande-la Metropolitan University (NMMU), NorthCampus Auditorium on Thursday 16 May.

Penned and directed by Monde Wani, this75 minute post-modern story-telling pro-duction, which has received rave reviewsin countries like America, Sweden, theUnited Kingdom and Germany, is a histori-cal piece - a celebration of the new South Af-rica and the dream of a Rainbow Nation.

It is set in pre-1994 about two ordinarySouth Africans who are lovers - taking usthrough their journey and expectations ofthe new South Africa, their hopes, dreams, frustrations and excitement.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba last week,Monde said he wrote this piece of work in

celebration of the life of Martin LutherKing.

“It was commissioned by Saint Benedictand St John’s College in Minneapolis,America, to honour Martin Luther King,”said Monde.

But when he looked at the life of NelsonMandela and the miracle of the new SouthAfrica, Monde saw the same joy and painthat must be celebrated in the two coun-tries.

What makes this story more exciting, ac-cording to Monde, he said, “I am telling itwith my wife.

“The two actors take their audience totheir confidence as they tell the story oftheir lives with a bit of humour and song,”said Wani without revealing much. He be-lieves this is his best work ever as a play-wright, actor and director.

Ten class-rooms currently do not have electricity – wewould like to rectify that. If possible, wewould also like to paint the outside of theschool and pave the school grounds.”According to Stephan Mazungula Primary

In-stead of hiring labourers, the staff and thecommunity come together to fix the school. We have a number of things we would like todo. Our classrooms need a coat of paint, thetennis and netball courts need to be resur-faced and repainted, and the rugby field needsto be remarked. But our main concern is theschool’s leaking roof – when it rains, wateraccumulates and it has caused the metal torust. Before the roof caves in, we would liketo build a pitch roof.”
