Over 1500 children were exposedto the Toy Library, which waspart of the National Book Weekheld at theRed LocationMuseumin New Brighton from Septem-ber, 6 to 8. General Motors SouthAfrica sponsored the Toy Li-brary which was an integral partof this initiative.

With 75% of what children willlearn in their lifetime being learntby the age of two, the Toy Libraryserves as an educational stimula-tion with special focus on founda-tion skills for literacy, mathematicsand scientific thinking for youngchildren whose families are livingin poverty.

During the three days that thisevent was held, thousands of chil-dren moved through the Magic Tentwhich housed the Toy library,Reading Section and Poetry Sec-tion. Heleen Johnson, Director ofActive Learning Libraries SouthAfrica said, “The response wasoverwhelming and the reason for

this was that the event was held inan informal settlement therefore itwas more accessible for the kids toreach the venue. There are no sportgrounds or safe playing spaces inthe New Brighton area so the ToyLibrary offered them a safe and se-cure area where they can come andplay and learn in a fun and excitingenvironment”.

“The sponsorship from GeneralMotors enabled the Active Learn-ing Libraries to bring this Toy Lib-rary to the children in the EasternCape. We found that the childrenhad no basic skills like sortingshapes but they appear to have a lotof potential”, said Johnson.

Nandipha Moyakhe, GMSA em-ployee, who volunteered at the ToyLibrary on Saturday said, “It isamazing to see how the kiddies gotexcited about fitting shapes and siz-es together. They realised that it isnot so difficult and were very proudto show off their make believe ob-jects to the rest of the volunteersand staff.”

NELSON Mandela Bay is on thevergeof startinganewpublictrans-portsystemwhichisviewedasasig-nificant step towards making it aworld-class city.

A pilot project to kick-start the Inte-grated Public Transport System (IPTS)will be implemented as early as Octo-ber. According to Nelson Mandela BaySeniorTechnicianandIPTSexpert,Lu-vuyo Ntshebe, the overhaul of the cur-rent “poor, separate and uncoordinat-ed” system will take place at the begin-ning of next year.

The metro will use 50 buses thatwere bought with funding from the De-partment of Transport just before the2010 Fifa Soccer World Cup. The busesare currently standing idle and gather-ing dust.

Speaking to the religious fraternityat the City Hall in Port Elizabeth onThursday as part of the metro’s con-sultative strategy meetings to varioussectors, Ntshebe said the metro wasreadytostart thesafe, quick, affordableand efficient system.

“All the role-players in the transportsector have been consulted and agreed

to be part of the process that is meantto benefit and empower residents of themetro,” said Ntshebe.

Thesystemwhichusesmedianlanesand enclosed median route stations ontrunk corridors is aimed at taking themetro forward. According to Ntshebe,it is aimed at reducing transport con-gestion by making more people use acost-effective public transport system.

This, added Ntshebe, will combat en-vironmental impact and reduce globalwarning - something good for futuregenerations.

According to Ntshebe, this is the sys-tem originally known as BRT whichwas tried and tested in countries likeBrazil and Colombia. He said South Af-rica modified the system however, with the inclusion of the taxi industrywhich plays a pivotal role in the trans-port sector.

“Government has assured everyonethat there will be no loss of jobs and in-come as a result of the system,” said Nt-shebe.

Religious leaders asked many ques-tions like whether the fares would beexorbitant for the unemployed andpoor; and whether there would be dis-counts for the elderly, children and thedisabled. Ntshebe said all will be ca-tered for fairly in the new system.

NELSON Mandela Bay boxing Promoters andManagers had a very fruitful meeting whichwas held at Sizakele Konzi Community Hall inKwaNobuhle, Uitenhage last Wednesday.Boxing South Africa (BSA) Service Provider

Mthunzi Mapitiza said boxing licensees (man-agers and promoters)met to discuss issues thataffect their operations in so far as their adher-ence to the prescripts of the Boxing Act.The meeting was called by the boxing pro-

moters.“We have a commitment to provide boxing

lovers with good shows but the relationship weenjoy with boxing managers sometimes rob us

of that opportunity. That’s why we called themeeting,” said Mbulelo Mfama, head of NyusaBoxing Promotions.Asked to explain, Mfama said promoters

found itwrong formanagers to tell their boxersnot to fight for certain promoters orworse still, for managers to tell their boxers to pull out offights. This was seen during Gladys “Noforty”

Tsenene’s last development tournament atBabsMadlakaneCommunityHall inUitenhageabout amonth ago, arguedMfama.Mfama saidmanagers and promoters agreed that when aboxer signed a contract for a fight, a boxermusthonour the contract, otherwise pulling out killsthe tournament.“We also looked into the idea of promoters

bringing fighters from other provinces to fightfor the title here - and agreed that at this stage,we got only Makhosonke Zwengu and UnathiJacobs approved to fight for the SA titles - allotherboysgot their chancesand lost,” saidMfa-ma.Mapitiza who was invited in the meeting as

were very important to both the managers andpromoters in their liaison with boxers, saidMapitiza.Other issues thatgot theattentionof theman-
