Motivation• Extrinsic motivation : They serve the indirect satisfaction of a

need, the extrinsic approach is “a means of satisfying needs” E.g. Monetary gratification• Intrinsic motivation : It refers to motivation that comes from

inside an individual rather than from any external or outside rewards.

Common incentives that can be offered by companies• Monetary awards: Direct recognition of your contribution to KM by

way of Coupons, Cash or other materialistic gifts. There is a risk of unplanned and inefficient data accumulation when monetary incentives are linked hence they need to be worked in the true spirit of the objective

• Certificates and Awards : In this type of recognition employee is awarded with Certificates , trophies or other such kind of rewards. The risk in such incentives is that if too many awards are given they will lose their uniqueness and value

• Intrinsic motivation: these incentives are very effective and powerful tools. A top down approach is the basic requisite. Employee needs to empowered in a way that he is free to think innovatively and implement his ideas. He should feel free to share this knowledge with others because he shall be gaining satisfaction by doing so.
