December Meeting Minutes
Meeting was at Falcon Police Substation. Called to order by Patty Strauch 1. Tom - Introductions of visitors. The CSCC welcomes our guests. We hope you decide to join us.
2. December minutes were accepted as written 3. At the January meeting we will nominate a 2011 charity. At this meeting we heard two presentations about possible char-ities.
• Guest Stacy Butler presented information about a day camp for Colorado Springs Children.
• Rob Miskowitch presented information about infor-mation about the Marian House Soup Kitchen, a soup kitchen in Colorado Springs that feeds over 600 people each day, 365 days per year.
4. Loren - Treasurer’s report was read and accepted. 5. Judy - Christmas basket update.
• Two weeks from meeting is the assembly • Added 10 families
• 170 baskets • Wed Dec 15th, 6:30, setup at Springs Funeral Ser-vices
• Thur Dec16th 6:30, basket assembly at Springs Fu-neral Services
• Sat Dec 18th, 10:00AM, delivery starting at Springs Funeral Services
8
• List of families is complete, phone calls have started. • Raised over $4,000 for the needed $6,400. • Bring turkeys on delivery day. • Bring snacks on Thursday night assembly if you like. • Hal has bulk buy for 70% of items for $2,000, does not count turkey and ham.
• Left over money will be used for extra food and gift certifi-cates.
• Hal has a commitment for $700-$800 more. • Terry volunteered to make maps for all deliveries. • A motion was voted and accepted to spend up to $1000 of the club’s funds if needed on food items.
• Melvin has 8 cases of hot wheels for baskets. • Kids are invited to participate on deliveries.
6. Diana Dittman - There will be an auction at the Christmas party. Herb Thompson, former club member, used to own a 57 Corvette. He has some memorabilia to be auctioned off. This will help offset his cancer treatment costs.
7. Ed Redlin - Trash pickup. Seven people helped keep the CSCC portion of the highway clean. Thanks to those who helped. They were able to clean up everything in 1.5 hours. Next cleanup will be in spring. Great job keeping the roads clean!
8. Larry - Sno*Flakes rally. Congratulations to the winner and 2011 chair Rik Noring! This year everyone left from the Golden Corral on Woodmen and drove to Elizabeth to see the Rambler Ranch. Photos available in last month’s newsletter. There are 500-700 American Motors cars. 200 of these are in showroom condition. 2nd place went to Roger Miller, and 3rd to the Loewens. Proceeds, $1163.35, went to the Christmas basket fund. Thanks to Pete, Al-ta, Craig, Larry, his wife and everyone else that helped.
9. Rob - Business cards. The cost per generation of cards is $30. This is more than anticipated. After discussions with the club we decided to look for sponsorship. So far we have sponsorship as follows:
• C2 - Gary Yale with his 63 Split picture • C4 - Jerry Stermer with his C4 in front of Garden of the Gods.
• C6 - Barrett Benson with his C6 10. Winnie - Dub bridge. See flyer. Saturday January 22nd. Cost $5.00, bring appetizers.
11. Walt - Website. The website is still being transferred to the new host. Some communications failures have delayed the process. Email as we know today is not going to work. We are looking at other options. The transfer was unavoidable as our old host is
9
shutting down. 12. Walt - The trophies displayed at the meeting will be recycled if they are not claimed. Walt is no longer carrying them.
13. Mikie - Facebook. We have 38 friends so far. All of the CSCC events are being posted there. Look at facebook for the Sno*Flakes rally results. Watch a great video by Rik Noring on tire wear, AKA “Where do those big white puffy clouds come from?”
14. Dick Strauch - Bylaws. The bylaws committee is meeting on De-cember 7th to review and make changes as appropriate. Will re-view with the club in January. If you have suggestions please con-tact Dick.
15. Barrett - National Corvette Museum. We received our old brick in the mail from the NCM. The new brick is installed. See article for picture. We paid $25 for shipping. We will have a silent auction for the old one of facebook. If you are not on facebook contact Mikie for help getting a bid in.
16. Don - NCCC RMCC 2010 results • CSCC #2 in club results • Mens #1 Rik Noring • Mens #2 Wayne Umland • Mens #5 Lorren Loewen • Mens #7 Walt Jenkins • Mens #14 Don Adametz • Womens #4 Laurie Loewen • Womens #6 Shauna Catt
• Womens #8 Florece Noring • Womens #14 Susan Umland
17. Hal - NCCC Insurance. We will have a new insurance company next year. The waivers should be the same. New insurance pro-vides better coverage, bigger umbrella, lower costs. Estimated savings per year is $17,0000. Provides clubs with some embez-zlement protection, and NCCC road side assistance. Watch for details on this. There will also be a membership drive in 2011. Walt computerized the membership list for NCCC.
18. Don - NCCC limit to 14 events in 2011. 7 regional, and 7 national. There are opportunities to use “un-used” events from other clubs.
19. Ed - Christmas parade. December 4th. Meet at 4:30 on Tejon and Dale at 4:30. One hour parade. Meet at Culvers for dinner after-wards. Put plenty of lights on your car. Santa will be at the end of the parade. So if you are approached by Santa and he wants to ride in your Corvette please send him to the back of the parade. He is not allowed to ride anywhere else in the parade.
20. Kelly Z. - Manitou parade is Saturday Dec 11th, meet at 10:30.

NATIONAL CORVETTE MUSEUM On November 18, 2010 I was notified by the National Corvette Mu-seum that the Colorado Springs Corvette Club small brick had been replaced with a new brick and the old brick was being shipped to me. I received the old brick on November 23. The new brick (see photograph) is located in same grid spot as the old brick, section 31B in front of the museum’s main entrance. The exact location and photographs of the old brick (as it was in September and after I used a sharpie black pen to color in the letters) are in the November 2010 Vette Set newsletter. The lettering of the new brick is much darker, fills all of the lettering space, and should last another 15 years or so. Wear and tear on the CSCC brick is substantially more than most of the bricks because it is in the pathway directly from the parking lot to the main entrance. If you visit the NCM, make sure you visit the new brick. I am sure that it would appreciate meeting its owners. The front desk person-nel can assist you in finding it if you forget the location. The old brick was returned to me in fine shape and still bearing the black sharpie colored lettering. Those of you attending the December 2 meeting had a chance to see and hold the old brick as I brought it with me. If I don’t forget and if it does not snow, I’ll bring it to the January 2011 meet-ing. Every member should have the opportunity to own the brick, and the board has decided to auction it off. There will be a special announcement of the procedure to bid on it. The brick will make a nice addition to anyone’s collection of Corvette memorabilia. Copies of the 2009 and 2010 Vette Set, on two CDs, are now in the NCM library. Most of the Corvette Clubs that are repre-sented by Ambassa-dors send copies of their newsletters to the NCM library. In fact, each year, clubs can request that their newsletters be en-tered into a contest for the best looking newsletter of the year.

Club Charity Nomination: The S.A.Y YES program stands for Save America’s Youth. S.A.Y. YES! was founded through Campus Crusades in 1992. These development centers serve over 3,000 children across the country, with a focus on at risk children. We provide a biblical based program that takes place in an after school setting. Our goal is to give at risk children a solid foundation from which they can build a successful future. Here in Colorado Springs, we are serving children by providing after school meals that may be their only dinner meal. We have mentors that volunteer to walk alongside children and tutor them with school work and life skills. We have activities and curriculum with monthly topics that help build strong char-acters and values. Each child is given instruction and guidance in financial matters, decision making and social skills. We tend to the emotional, physical, intellectual, spiritual and social skills that lend to a balanced future. We often are meeting the needs of the children’s family as well. The S.A.Y. YES! local center is located at Westside Community Center, 1620 W. Bijou St. and is open three days a week from 3:00 to 6:00 pm. It serves 10 children and their families, with 6 volunteers and a part time director, Stacy Butler, whom is paid through Campus Crusade with donated funds from a lo-cal church. We have operated here locally since September 2009 and we are currently in our second year of service. We look forward to the future with additional centers to open as we have the needed funding. We rely on dona-tions and funding from local churches, individuals and organization’s. Estimated monthly budget: Building rental $200.00 Currently being paid for by a local church. Food costs $150.00 Currently there are no funds available to meet this need. There is a group of ladies donating food items for us to use in preparing the children’s meals. Supplies and resources $100.00 Currently there are no funds available to meet the need. The same group above is helping by donating gift cards to Wal Mart and donating items that can be used in the store we provide for the children to earn and spend their S.A.Y. YES! Dollars. Field Trip / Outings $150.00 Currently we are unable to take the children on field trips because we have no funds to do so. Last year we were able to have a reward bean jar and as the children fill it up we planned a field trip for them to all attend. Field trips are so needed for these children as for most of them this is their only way of going bowling, seeing a movie, going to a play at the Pikes Peak Center, or dining out at a pizza palor. Estimated other expenses: Send 10 children to summer camp $1000.00 Funds will have to be raised this year to send them for the summer of 2011.
23
Last year we were able to raise enough money to send 3 girls off to a 5 day summer camp in Bailey, Colorado and 3 boys to a local camp, Eagles Nest for 4 days of day camp. Center volunteer trainings $300.00 Currently there is enough funds available to have one training coming up in February. In addition we often have unexpected expenses in helping families with cloth-ing and food needs. It would also be helpful to have a emergency fund availa-ble to families that have a crisis and need some extra help to get them through. As you can see we are in much need of support. Your group would be our first to partner with us as a private organization to help this center on it’s way to success. We currently are making it the best center we can with what we have but with your financial help it would stretch along ways with helping the poor and needy children in our community to become more successful in every way. Should you decide to become a support partner of the S.A.Y. YES! Center your funds would be used in any area of need that you specifically want it to go to or it can be used as needed. We appreciate your consideration of any financial support for this center, either with monthly or one time contribution. Thank you for your time, consideration, and the opportunity to share with you about the first S.A.Y. YES! Center of Colorado Springs. Sincerely, Stacy Butler Center Director and City Coordinator of S.A.Y. YES! Centers. 719-359-7002 Email address: [email protected] Website for S.A.Y. YES! It’s not if, it is when….. By Rob Miskowitch
Thank you Rik Noring of the Corvette Center (and CSCC club member) for attending the garage night in September and demon-strated the replacement of the nylon gear used to raise and lower the headlights on a C5. It isn’t if this gear will wear out, it is when this gear wears out. You will know your gear is worn when the headlight on your C5 no longer raises up, or it intermittently raises or lowers. The nylon gears strip, and sometime crack into pieces. When this happens it is time to replace the gears. The Corvette center sells brass re-placement gears. Step 1. Raise the headlight with the twisty nob looking thing. Then, remove the hood stop. Why? So you don’t get your hand caught between the headlight and the hood stop. If you choose not to remove this make sure your significant other is around so you can yell to them to come down and remove it when your hand is caught between the headlight and the hood stop.
Step 2. Remove the molding in front of the headlight. It must be removed to gain access to the motor. There are a couple of screws that hold this in place. Step 3. Unbolt and re-
27
move the headlight motor. There is a nut in the back and the power source that will need to be unfastened to remove this for the next steps, the actual replacement of the ny-lon gear. Step 4. Of the entire procedure this is probably the scariest step (with the possible exception of ignoring step 1 and not having your significant other within earshot). With a flathead screw-driver pry off the cover. This cover is glued on. Be gentle, do
not crack this cov-er. If you crack the cover it is no long-er cheaper to DIY. You will want to gently pry all the way around until the cover is re-moved.
See how nice that old gear looks?
28
OK, upon a closer look after you removed the nylon gear from the mo-tor hosing, the gear doesn’t look so good. It looks like my dog chewed on it a bit. This is the cause of the prob-lem. It can be stripped, or you may find it in pieces. Step 5. Reassem-ble with the new brass gear. First make sure there is grease on the screw gear. Put the new brass gear in. Place the rubber piece over the brass gear. Then replace the
axle that actually drives the headlight movement. Then put the lid that you pried off over the top of the new gear.
29
Step 6. You now have a choice. You can use the epoxy in your replacement gear kit to re-glue the cover, or you can use the T metal bracket to hold it all together. The T metal bracket seems to make more sense. You don’t have to wait for the epoxy to dry. You don’t have to worry about epoxy getting into the motor. It’s easy to take apart again if you need to. Seems to make the most sense. But it is up to you which you decide to do. Step 7. Bolt motor in and reattach the electrical connector. Test the headlights to make sure they go up and down. Do this with the switch in the car. Step 8. Replace the headlight molding and put the hood stop in again. Should take around 45 minutes. I think Rik can do it in 15 minutes. It appears he has had a lot of practice. There are a lot of C5s out there to
