However, outside of seafood Wicklow also has a strong tradition of providing diverse dining options. There is considerable international influence in towns and villages up and down the county that has helped to shape many a restaurant and indeed its menu. The finest of Mediterranean and oriental cuisine is well represented with establishments offering top-class authentic dishes to customers. This month at In Wicklow we have taken it upon ourselves to delve into our county’s culinary assortment to determine which providers deserve to be listed in our exclusive ‘ten of the best’ dining venues in all of Wicklow. The iconic Roundwood Inn is situated right in the heart of Roundwood, one of the highest villages in Ireland. The unique building constructed in 1622 was originally a coach inn and today

has both spacious bar and restaurant areas. Jürgen and Aine Schwalm have owned and run the inn since 1966 and pride themselves on their good value home-produced dishes.

There is a strong emphasis on seasonal food on the á la carte restaurant menu and, depending on the season, any of following might be available to experience: venison, pheasant, Hungarian Goulash, lobster or oysters. All produce is sourced in Ireland with the lamb and beef being bought locally in Gerry Kavanagh Butchers in Roundwood village.

In addition to the restaurant there is also a full award-winning bar menu available to enjoy in the atmospheric seventeenth century surroundings that include a traditional log fire that is constantly on the go. The Roundwood Inn is open seven days a week from 12pm for lunch and the restaurant menu is available from 7:30pm-9pm. The restaurant is also open for Sunday lunch with traditional roast lamb and pork dishes on the menu. All dishes are extremely popular with visitors but there is also a strong local trade – and there has been for over forty years – that Jürgen and Aine are particularly proud of. For further information and to book call 01 281 8107.

Vino Pasta located on Church Rd., Greystones has been offering the finest in Mediterranean cuisine for many years and when

David and Jeffrey Behan took over the establishment just over four years ago they were delighted to be able to continue this fine tradition. The trademarks on the varied menu are the varied spectacular fresh fish specials of which there are generally 3-4. All fish is sourced from either Dalkey Island or Dunmore East resulting in a strong local emphasis on these dishes. Depending on the season the fish selections can be anything from turbot, monkfish and salmon to lobster, brill and the especially popular pan-fried monkfish.

Vino Pasta offers and ‘early bird’ menu between 5pm and 7pm at weekends where two courses – including the fish special – are

available for €17.95. The restaurant is open from 3pm for lunch from Tuesday to Saturday and from 5pm-10pm for dinner and is also open on Sunday between 12pm and 9pm where there is a full Sunday-lunch menu on offer.

In addition to the varied menu itself (which has been recommended by Paul Tulio among others) Vino Pasta’s location is a strong selling point as it is situated right in the heart of the bustling town of Greystones. There is ample outdoor space where patrons can enjoy their dishes or drinks in the relaxing atmosphere outside should the weather be amenable. This, together with a strong local trade, helps to maintain Vino Pasta as one of the culinary gems of Greystones. For further details and booking information visit www.vinopasta.ie or call 01 287 4087.

Curves Area has pledged to lend its support to Action Breast Cancer, a programme of the Irish Cancer Society, in an effort to raise funds for vital support programmes in Ireland and to educate Irish women on breast cancer issues.

Curves clubs across Ireland have committed to help raise money for the charity through a series of events and initiatives throughout the month of October. Curves Area will also promote means of early detec-tion and prevention, such as mam-mograms, self-breast exams, and regular physical exercise, in its clubs.

The women’s-only fitness centre, located in Bray, Greystones &Wick-low will also waive the joining fee for new members during 1-16 Octo-ber in return for a donation to Ac-tion Breast Cancer or another breast

As part of the fundraising efforts, Curves Area will collect old and/or un-wanted bras from both Curves members and local residents alike for the club’s bra recycling bank, with €1.10 being raised for Action Breast Cancer for each kilo* of bras donated.

Martina Brady, Manager of Curves Bray, said:  “Fundraising for breast can-cer charities is something which unites the Curves community globally and we’re delighted to be able to support Ac-tion Breast Cancer, whose goals of sup-porting and strengthening women match Curves’ core values extremely well.”

Over the past two years, Curves clubs across Ireland have fundraised in excess of €11,000 for Action Breast Cancer. Waste of space in an attic is a huge missed opportunity. It’s a pity that so many houses built today don’t have attics that can be converted later. There’s very little cost in doing the basic work, such as providing the headroom, floor structure, and somewhere for a stairs to go later, that can be designed to comply with fire regulations. If you have a house, and there is an opportu-nity to convert the attic space, it makes so much sense. It’s the first space to look for if you want to expand.

A converted attic space can be a very attractive room, because it can break away from a lot of the drab and dreary cells that often happen in lower floors, which are functional small rooms with

rectilinear spaces. You can have a lot of wood expressed in the structure, with sloping ceilings, using the low headroom

space too. If one can design in an imaginative way for the interiors, it can be a very exciting space to walk into, which can be externally attractive. It can enhance the architectural

treatment of a building in a very taste-ful way.

If the structure of your attic space and roof are right, you may be able to convert your attic into a family room. An attic conversion can be a lot less expensive and time-consuming than adding on to your home. It’s an attrac-tive option, especially in older homes with lots of attic space.

through the windows alone.4. Poorly insulated walls account for up 25% of heat lost in

the home.5. 15% of home heat is lost through poorly insulated floors.6. A lagging jacket over the water cylinder will keep water

warmer for longer.7. Glen Fuels recommends annual servicing of fuel burning

appliances. Servicing a boiler that has not been serviced in three years, will reduce the amount of oil burned by up to

5%.8. Programme your heating system to come on and switch off at certain set times. 9. Divide your house into zones (living area and sleeping area) and make use of a separate timer for each zone.10. Thermostat valves are easily fitted onto radiators and automatically regulate the radiator heat output. This ensures a constant temperature in the room.11. Modern boilers usually have an op-tion to heat water and radiators separate-ly. This means that in warm weather, you can use your boiler to heat water without heating the radiators at the same time.

Energy conservation may result in financial savings, improved en-vironmental quality and greater comfort for you and your family at home.

Here are some useful tips to help you maximise energy efficiency in your home.1. Up to 25% of heat lost in

the home is due to poor attic insulation.

2. Gaps around doors and win-dows account for 25% of all home heat lost.

An increasing number of homes are using gas for cooking, heating and provide hot water as it is convenient and efficient. However we cannot take our boilers, cookers, gas fires and other appliances for granted as safe. The normal wear and tear as well as the effects of the combustion process affect the operation of our appliances. It is important that everyone understands how to be gas safe at home.1. Get your boiler serviced once a year by a Registered

Gas Installer (RGI).2. Make sure you always use a Registered Gas Installer

(RGI). An RGI has the required safety qualifications to carry out gas work in your home. Each RGI will carry a valid ID Card.

3. Installing an audible, carbon monoxide alarm may alert you of the presence of poisonous gas carbon monoxide (CO) produced by unsafe gas appliances.

4. If you smell gas and suspect a gas leak, turn off your gas at the meter and follow the Bord Gaìs safety advice.

WHy SHOuLd I SERVICE My GAS bOILER?

As with all heating appliances, your gas boiler needs to be serviced once a year, as recommended by the manufacturers, to ensure that it is operating efficiently and safely. An efficient boiler is more environmental friendly leading to lower gas consumption, therefore lowering your bills. The safety aspect is even more critical as a regularly serviced boiler will operate safely i.e. the gas will burn correctly, reducing the risk of em-missions of poisonous Carbon Monoxide and / or production of sooth

WHO SHOuLd SERVICE My GAS bOILER?

It is illegal for anybody other than a Registered Gas Installer to service your boiler. Your gas boiler should only be serviced by a Registered Gas Installer (RGI) as he/she will have the required competency and experience to deal with the servic-ing, repair and setup of gas appliances.

Stunning viewS at PowerScourt HouSe & gardenS

Located on the periphery of Bray is magnificence of the of the Powerscourt estate. The 47 acres of gardens are remarkable for their grandeur of scale, at the same time combining great delicacy and refinement of detail. The house was gutted by fire in 1974 but recently has been reborn as an excep-tional tourist destination. An exhibition brings to life the rich history of the estate, while the double height Georgian ballroom has been restored and hosts weddings and corporate events. The house is

now home to the best of Irish design in gifts, clothes, and furniture in the Avoca Stores and the Interiors Gallery.

The spectacular gardens at Powerscourt boast all of a walled garden, fish pond, cascades, grottos and terraces. The Italianate garden design present was influenced by the terraces and formal features of Italian Renaissance villas and perfected in gardens in France and Germany. Enormous numbers and varieties of trees have been planted in the gardens over the years and the ground is adorned with an amazing collection of statuary, ironwork and other decorative items. The gardens open daily from 9.30am – 5.30pm and entry costs €8 for adults and €5 for children.

Tony Webster – stirred into action by dramatic recent changes in his life – is seeking a truth that will elude him forever unless he understands and accepts his own role in a tragic event from his early life. So he must remember what he’d prefer to forget and reconnect with persons all but erased from his memory of the past. At 160 pages, this remarkable book can easily be read in a single sitting but you’ll miss it terribly once you’re done.

utside of one’s home, a new car is generally the most expensive purchase that any of us will ever make. Therefore, it is crucial that

one is receiving the best possible service that offers long-term satisfaction and peace of mind.

Considering this it can be rather advantageous to buy locally so that if there are any issues they can be resolved smoothly and efficiently by a familiar face in your locality. Luckily, Bray is full of reputable car deal-erships offering a comprehensive array of services to motorists, including new & used cars as well as vehicle servicing. Rates are generally competitive and a local service is nearly always the most reliable one!

While we are moving towards the “no service car” ? Something most consum-ers would love, they are still a long way down the track.

Perhaps major car components (engines and transmissions) will become disposable like batteries, tyres, mufflers

and shock absorbers. We might one day see cars with engines like cassettes where you run it for a year then take it to a replacement centre which un-clicks the old engine and clicks in a new one.

In the meantime, we still need to take the car regularly to have its vital fluids checked or changed and other electronic and mechanical functions reviewed or adjusted.

Technology in cars like electronic fuel injection and electronic control units certainly have simplified servicing and “tuning” a car if the right computer equipment is used but they have also made the process more involved for the mechanic who must be trained to a higher level.

There is much more to servicing a modern car than simply giving it a “grease and oil change.” A correctly serviced and tuned engine will have a longer, more economical service life than one that is run into the ground with minimal or inappropriate attention.

A full service will also among other things, tell you the condition of the brake pads, battery condition, steering alignment, tyre tread depth, suspen-sion condition, oil leaks of any sort, exhaust leaks or corrosion, even how well the door locks are working.

And the best thing apart from hav-ing a fully functional, safe car is that with a complete service history, the car will be worth more when you sell it.

golF – Fedex CuP PlAyoFF SeRieSThe international golf season is drawing towards its climax with the season-end-ing FedEx Cup Playoff series currently taking place in the USA. The FedEx Cup is essentially the new sponsor-backed name for the US money list. It receives particular notoriety throughout the world owing mainly to the fact that the overall winner is awarded a first prize of $10 million (c. €7 million). At the end of the regular season the top 125 players on the money list advance to the first of four playoff events. After each event the number of players is reduced; to 100 for the second event, 70 for the third and, finally, just the top 30 players on the money list compete

in the Tour Championship. Jim Furyk won the massive first prize last year but has failed to make it to the final event this time around. Fellow American Dustin Johnson, having captured the first Playoff tournament, is still in the mix-up in the FedEx Cup points list and seems to be well placed to challenge for the overall prize.

Irish interest revolved around Graeme McDowell and Padraig Har-rington for the first two events but both players have since bowed out of the series. Harrington has struggled for form again this season and made it into the playoffs as the 124th player on the US money list, but he seemed to have recaptured some form in recent weeks. He finished in the top 15 in the first playoff event, The Barclays, at the end of August which was enough to

push the Dubliner into the top 100 and qualify him for the second event. Har-rington does tend to play his best golf in the second half of the season (a fact well demonstrated by his three major titles, which were all won in July and August) and has competed well in the FedEx Cup before. In 2009 he was in the top 5 right up until the Tour Championship and well in contention, so it would have been no surprise to see him perform well again. The Dubliner will now have plenty of free time to fine tune his swing with new coach Pete Cowen for the coming season. The schedule for the final Playoff even is as follows:

FootBAll – PReMieR leAgue The new Premier League sea-son is only a matter of weeks old, yet a number of interest-ing plot lines already seem to be emerging. Defending champions Manchester United have hit the ground running with some impres-sive performances, culminating in a spectacular 8-2 drubbing of supposed rivals, Arsenal. The Red Devils’ sum-mer acquisitions seem to have settled in well into the new set-up with Ashley Young in particular catching the eye of many a pundit. Even at this early point Man United look like they will be berry tough to dethrone. Meanwhile, Arsenal have had very much contrast-ing fortunes. The Gunners, instead of improving their squad over the summer months, went in the opposite direc-tion; losing talisman and captain Cesc

Fabregas to his boyhood club Barcelona and dynamic attacker Samir Nasri to Premier League rivals Manchester City. This left a gaping hole in the Arsenal team that manager Arsene Wenger has

been desperately attempting to plug and suc-ceeded to some extent before the transfer window shut at the end of August. Wenger managed to bring in three players; Per Mertesacker from Werder Bremen, Yossi Benayoun from Chel-sea and Mikel Arteta from Everton. All three were signed on transfer deadline day with Wenger finally succumb-ing to pressure to bolster his squad. In addition, Arsenal

have made it through to the group stages of the Champions

League so there does seem to be some hope for the London side.

The other big sides in the Premier League (Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool) have also been busy in the transfer market. Chelsea have prob-ably been the least notable with their main summer signing being their new manager, André Villas-Boas. Man-chester City have predictably spent big again with their main new man, Sergio Kun Aguero, looking to be a fabulous addition to the Premier League. He has had an impressive start at City, scor-ing twice on his debut and he seems to be doing his best to repay the reported €40 million paid to Atlético Madrid to acquire the Spaniard’s services. ‘King’ Kenny Dalglish looks to have adopted an unusual buy-British policy at Anfield, with Liverpool spending big money on Stewart Downing, Jordan Henderson and Charlie Adam during the summer break. The approach seems to be bearing fruit with Liverpool un-beaten so far this season and there looks to be a much needed sense of stability about the team. What is certain is that the fight for a top-4 finish will be as tough as ever with all of Manchester United, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal all realistically contending.

FootBAll – leAgue oF iRelANd PReMieR diViSioNThe Airtricity League Premier Division is reaching a crescendo with a quarter of the season remaining. Defending champions Shamrock Rovers, fresh from their recent European success, are right in the mix once more. The Tallaght club became the first Irish team to qualify for the UEFA Europa League group stage when they defeated Partizan Belgrade 2-1 after extra-time in the final qualifying round at the end of August. This historic achievement is set to put Irish domestic football on the map with English Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur set to visit Ireland for a competitive European tie. But before that Rovers must focus on retaining their league title so that they may be in a position to succeed in Europe again next season. Their main challengers in the race for the title look to be Derry City and Sligo Rovers. Striker Eamon Zayed has been in excel-lent form for Derry this season and is currently the top scorer (20 goals) in the division, while Eoin Doyle has been hit-ting the back of the net with respectable

regularity also and has scored 17 times this season.

Elsewhere in the league, Wicklow-based Bray Wanderers look well placed to avoid relegation from the top flight this season. The Seagulls have struggled in the Premier Division in recent years but with three sides well below them in the table will surely be playing top-flight football again next season. Forward Conor Murphy has been one of Bray’s most important players this year, with the 18-year-old topping the club goal-scoring charts. Galway United prop up the table and are well adrift at the bottom and look certain to drop down to Division 1 next season. The remaining fixtures in the Pre-mier Division for September are:

in 1987, and the setting returns to the only place where the All Blacks have won a the Webb Ellis trophy. It has been 24 years and there have been five tournaments since New Zealand have triumphed on the biggest of stages, but regardless they go into this tournament with the number one overall ranking and are strong favourites to lift the tro-phy on their home patch. Irish prepara-tions haven’t gone especially well results wise, though, coach Declan Kidney has had the opportunity to try out different tactics and blood some potential new talent. After a slow start against the USA the Irish have since recorded an historic triumph over Australia so optimism is now considerably higher in the Irish camp.

the MAiN CoNteNdeRSNew Zealand: A recent defeat to

Australia in the Tri-Nations has once again brought up worries that New Zealand can exit a major tournament empty handed. Playing at home, they have all the pressure but history showed us that they can handle the nerves of playing at home in the World Cup.

iRiSh NAtioNAl RugBy teAM

They have also not lost at home in 2 years, so expect them to come out confi-dent and be present in the latter stages.

South Africa: The Springboks are the defending champions and are once again equipped with a team that is capable of pouncing if their rivals South of the Hemisphere fail to bring their ‘A’ game. They haven’t looked dominant as of late but that is sure to change when they set foot in New Zealand and are faced with the prospect of defending their title – they have brought in vet-erans from the 2007 triumph to make sure of it. Interestingly, they are respon-sible for two of New Zealand’s three home defeats since 2007 so right them off at your peril.

Australia: The Wallabies will look to spoil the party in this tournament with confidence behind them after a good win at the Tri-Nations. Irish eyes will be fixed closely on the Austra-lians, given that we have been grouped together with the twice champions and once runners up.’ needs to be changed to ‘The Australians have suffered a massive early setback with their shock loss to the Irish but they still possess immense talent that can drive them

through the competi-tion.

England: Eng-land are always the most unpredictable of teams, winning when you least expect them to and losing just when you start to count on them to win. As the current Six Na-tions champions they have some momentum behind them but hardly look like repeating their performance from 8 years ago. Then again, that’s when England seems to perform best, and they have some youngsters

who have the potential to shock the big 3 should

they get past Scotland and Argentina in the initial

knockout stages.France: The French have gotten

close to capturing a Rugby World Cup on several occasions, but this could be their year. Their exciting style of play has garnered them many fans but their eccentric play also has caused them to go from hot to cold relatively quickly. They can beat anyone, and they did take out New Zealand in 2007, but they can also lose unexpectedly, and a potential quarterfinal clash with Eng-land could be their downfall. Still they stand as the best team to never win the World Cup.

Of the dark horses with slight chanc-es Ireland look to be the best placed. We haven’t excelled at recent tournaments but this will be the last World Cup for the Grand Slam generation so there is extra motivation right there as dem-onstrated by the 15-6 victory over the Wallabies! Elsewhere, Wales, Argentina and Scotland look to be the only other possible contenders. It would of course be a shock to see any of these teams in the final but that’s what makes the Rugby World Cup so exciting, you just never know...
