P R E F A C E We are Songs In His Presence, a group of composers within International Liturgy Publications who share a history of spiritual renewal. In the early 1970s, we had profoundly encountered Christ in the “New Pentecost” which poured forth after Vatican II. United by the Holy Spirit in community and serving in God’s presence, we provided and composed music for liturgies and prayer meetings in the growing renewal. The new songs of praise often included settings of the Psalms. Others joined us, and thus developed a singular and enduring tradition of Psalmody. The music of Psalms In His Presence is a distillation of God’s bounty to us: blessings of devotion, love, worship, and community. As the Holy Spirit continually refreshes the Church, so we share this Psalms collection with gratitude and joy. These are Psalms of Sacred Scripture, crafted for use as Responsorial Psalms for the Roman Catholic Order of Mass as celebrated in the United States. Within these volumes are selections also inspiring for entrance, presentation and Communion processions, and for use in celebrations of life’s passages such as anniversaries, weddings, funerals, and dedications. The communal singing of Psalms expresses our hearts’ longings, lifts hearts in praise of God, and assists all in reception of the Word of God and its recollection in times of personal need. The order of appearance in most of our volumes is according to each Psalm’s first liturgical calendar use. The Psalms In His Presence collection is available in separate volumes for each year of the 3-year cycle of Sunday readings (A, B, C), and a fourth volume for the Feasts and Solemnities (on the 1-year cycle). Audio editions include CD sets and mp3s. Print and digital editions are Accompaniment, Vocal/Guitar, Choral/Guitar, Choral Refrain, and Congregational Refrains. For some titles, choral octavos and/or instrumental parts are available. The text used is the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) translation, the New American Bible, as published in the Lectionary for Mass in the Dioceses of the United States. Saint Augustine portrays the Psalms as the very voice of Christ. As we sing and pray the Word we are transformed by it, our hearts raised to join in the heavenly chorus. Together with Jesus in the unity of the Holy Spirit, we sing his continual “Yes” to the Father. Jane Terwilliger Editor & Producer, Songs In His Presence
Since its inception in 2004, Songs In His Presence has made an enormous contribution to the musical worship of the Church, helping us to pray more fervently as the mystical Body of Christ. “Psalms In His Presence” is an extraordinary work. We are honored to present this collection of Psalm settings for your use. May the Word that lives within this eloquent music carry us ever more deeply into the enduring presence of God.
