Presidents Report A good turnout for a very enjoyable fellowship event at the Sing Tao restaurant last Thursday. Thanks to Megan for filling in for David Langworthy and adding her own unique brand of
glitter and sparkle to the event.
There was welcome news during the week that the Royal Mel-bourne Golf club has reconsidered its earlier decision and has now agreed to the running of the Bayside Mayoral Charity Golf Day in May 2017. Well done to Peter Flude and Martin Fother-gill for arguing the case, with the support of the Sandringham
Rotary Club and the Bayside City Council.
Also well done to those hardy souls who stood out in the cold wind on Saturday to sell sausages and shake cans in support of the 24hour Staff Fun Run to raise funds for the Sandring-ham Hospital Day Surgery Centre. I’m sure the exposure suf-fered by our members whilst raising money for such a well-worth cause was more than compensated for by the positive
exposure the club received.
On Sunday the first serious working bee was held at the Com-munity Garden site at St Stephens Church Brighton (or should that be Gardenvale?). There was a great turnout (see
Heather’s report next page)
On Monday and Tuesday many of us will be going back to school – to Sandringham College to be precise where we will be conducting mock interviews with students. This exercise is always a bit of an adventure with quite a range of range of atti-tudes and preparedness shown by the students. But there is a considerable level of satisfaction in being able to pass on our experience and useful tips to better prepare the students for
the real thing.
This Thursday we are back at the VGC. Our “guest speaker” is Josh Staley, a young up and coming magician from Beau-maris. Come along and see Josh dazzle us with some close-
up magic. Visitors very welcome.
Yours in Rotary
Malcolm

St. Stephen's Community Garden
Our first Working Bee was held at St. Stephen’s Community Garden on Sunday.
A great turn out, 23 enthusiastic gardeners of all ages and backgrounds, including two young ones and a dog, got
stuck into some serious digging and clearing up of the site in preparation for building the garden plots.
I am amazed by the amount of work that was achieved that afternoon. The friendships between gardeners are thriv-
ing, and so will our veges when we start our Spring planting.
Our next working bee will be held this Sunday 7 August at 1.00pm, everyone welcome.
Thanks to Beaumaris Rotary for supporting this fantastic project.

Sandringham Hospital Staff 24 Hour Walk
Sandy Hospital staff took part in a 24-hour walk this Friday, July 29 to help raise funds to build a new day procedure centre. The walk was a relay style event, following a circuit from Sandringham Hospi-tal to Black Rock shops, along Beach Road to San-dringham, then Bay Road and back to the hospital. Beaumaris Rotary supported the event by running a BBQ in the Sandringham shopping centre area and collecting donations.

A manta ray pokes a fin through the water’s surface off the French island of Mayotte, in the Indian Ocean. The mantas’ size and fearsome-looking cephalic fins once earned the animals the name devilfish; however, we now know better: Scuba divers have found them to be gentle and accommodat-
ing.
