Presidents Report

Welcome to April, I hope everybody had a happy and safe Easter.

On Tuesday evening a group of us went to Hampton Rotary’s meet-ing at Milanos to listen to Jacyl Shaw, the former Director of Engage-ment, Carlton Connect Innovation District at the University of Mel-bourne. Jacyl talked about innovation hubs and why place is so important in that it promotes supportive relationships. Thanks to Liz and Jenny for making us so welcome.

Sandybeach Centre held their AGM on Wednesday, I attended and represented Beaumaris Rotary. We are hoping to get a number of the art of Kakadu pieces into their May Art Exhibition.

It was ironic that we decided not to have a meeting at VGC on Thursday as we were concerned that there would be a low turnout and it is difficult to find a speaker so close to Easter. In the event 50 Rotarians and partners went to the Beaumaris Sporting Club for a tour and dinner. While the facilities are impressive, I don’t think that they are yet set up to cater for the numbers we presented them with. Thanks to Megan for putting the evening together and keeping us entertained. It was great to see Helen Phillips back amongst us and looking so well. See photos on page 2.

We have now made a donation of $2,000 to Rotary District 9780’s Bush Fire appeal. I am sure you remember the devastating fires a couple of weeks back that impacted their district and continue to cause problems. If you would like to make an individual donation, District 9780 has set up an account for the receipt of funds:

We are back at Victoria Golf Club on Thursday when I will present the results of our In Gear survey. I also want to take a look look at some of the things we have achieved this year. April is Rotary Magazine Month “Being a Rotarian is a shared experience and like attending a Rotary club meeting, reading our Rotary magazine is an essential

part of that shared experience.–Ron Burton, RI President 2014-2014

Last month, we celebrated Literacy Month and this month, we reflect on how through reading we can improve our knowledge of Rotary. Everything in our lives depends on consistent, accurate and constant communication. We receive Rotary communica-tions regularly through our club bulletins, emails from various sources, our Club & District websites, this District Newsletter and most importantly our regional magazine, Rotary Down Under.

As part of our Rotary membership all Rotarians receive a Rotary magazine. Some members opt to receive the RI publication, “The Rotarian”, used in North America and in other parts of the world but the preferred option in Australia is Rotary Down Under (RDU). RDU represents the complete education and resource tool for Rotarians in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific.

Spending 30 minutes each month reading the monthly magazine makes Rotarians more knowledgeable about Rotary and better equipped to promote the organisation to friends, family workmates and others. The RDU magazine is also a great source of ideas for new and worthwhile service projects and ideas on how to make our clubs more effective. It can also trigger debate and dis-cussion as well as remind us of the value of fun and fellowship In Rotary.

Rotary Down Under was established as a regional magazine in 1965 but remained a complementary publication to the official magazine of Rotary International – TheRotarian – until 1978. In that year it became the world’s first Rotary regional magazine to gain full recognition. Though The Rotarian is still the flagship publication of Rotary International, RDU is now one of 32 regional magazines distributed in more than 130 countries and written in 25 languages. These magazines provide a direct link between Rotary International and all its clubs. They share the information and stories every Rotarian needs to read.

When you have finished reading your magazines, please do not dispose of them. Collect as many as possible from club mem-bers and recycle them. Place them anywhere that people are likely to read them, such as in dental surgeries, doctors’ surgeries, hair dressers, schools, libraries, coffee shops etc. Doing this provides an opportunity for non-Rotarians to read about our pro-grams. And don’t forget to pass them onto your local Interact or Rotaract Club.

ON THE

RUN

Horses run through the snow in Hokkaido, Ja-pan. While per-haps not typically associated with Japan, horses have lived in the country for al-most 2,000 years. In fact, there are eight purebred Japa-

nese breeds.
