The oxidation of glucose starts with the process ofglycolysis within the cytoplasm where the glucose molecule(six-carbon) is converted into two molecules of pyruvate(three-carbon)

In the absence of oxygen, pyruvate is reduced to lactic acidby the addition of two hydrogen atoms. This process isassociated with a net hydrogen ion production, which

lowers intracellular pH

In the presence of oxygen, pyruvate enters themitochondria and is oxidized to carbon dioxide andwater

a total of 38 molecules of ATP are generated permolecule of glucose

Anaerobic glycolysis forms only two molecules ofATP for each molecule of glucose
