Important Dates
Dear Parents/Carers,
As we commence the beginning of the 2020 school year on behalf
of our school community I welcome new and existing families to
our supportive, safe and orderly school environment.
I would like to thank and acknowledge the work of the rural fire
service, town fire brigade, fire and emergency and SES who have
worked tirelessly through a catastrophic fire season. The work
that you have done to protect our communities in very difficult
conditions is appreciated.
Welcome to the Kindergarten class of 2020
This week we welcomed 35 new Kindergarten students. The
transition to school program put them all in a very good position
to begin their formal schooling. Mrs Dogger and Miss Reid have
been working with the students to establish routines and school
expectations. Thank you to parents for supporting the smooth
school transition. The 2.30pm pick up will continue until the
14th February.
Staffing 2020
There have been some changes to the original staffing plan. This
has been required to accommodate staffing allocations. Mrs Kellie
Schenk will be temporarily engaged as classroom teacher for 2020
on 3/4 Silver.

Staffing 2020
Ms Monika Conlon and Ms Katrina Haslem will job share in 3/4 Green. The first 3 days of the
week Ms Conlon will teach and Ms Haslem Thursday and Friday. All programs are collaboratively
planned across the stages with a shared responsibility by staff to all students across the school
with a focus on teaching and learning. Mrs Emma deWaard has moved into the RFF role on a
Monday and Wednesday. We welcome new staff to our supportive school community. We know
that they will appreciate our collaborative and cohesive school.
Outdoor Learning Area and Memorial Garden
During the holidays, Dray’s rural contracting finished off our lovely Outdoor Learning Area and
Memorial Garden erecting the fence. Ian, Gena, Gabe and Georgie gave up their holidays and
volunteered their time to complete this project. This family have also been involved in fighting
the recent fires as members of the rural fire service.
This space has provided a beautiful tranquil environment with cultural significance and
memories. Thank you to Mr Tilley who has worked hard during very hot and dry conditions to
keep the garden alive and growing.
Swimming Carnival
On Wednesday our students participated in both competitive and non-competitive events both
in and out of the pool. It is always a well organised event by Mrs Bennett who is responsible for
working with staff to put the event together. Portland pool is always pristine and inviting
although a little on the nippy side. Thank you to parents for volunteering your time to assist on
the day. Congratulations to all students who participated and to our swimming champions and
runner up champions. We certainly have some competitive and impressive swimmers with
records being broken. The district swimming carnival will be held on Friday 21st February.
Leaders Induction
Today we had the pleasure of inducting our new school captains, prefects, house captains and
SRC representatives with family members present and involved.
When you think of Leadership it can bring to mind different images. Leadership means different
things to different people, and different things in different situations.
Leaders help themselves and others do the right thing. They set direction, build an aspiring
vision and create something new. Leadership is not about working alone, it is about working
with a team to get where you need to go. Leaders are exciting, dynamic and inspiring. Leaders
are people who do the right thing guiding people to the right destination through developing
respectful relationships. Being a leader is not about the status that comes with the badge, it is
about your actions.
Congratulations and we look forward to working with you and your families in 2020.

P&C Meeting
It would be wonderful to have some new faces attend our P&C meetings. All are welcome.
Our P&C contribute significantly to the school in many ways. They engage with the school and
wider community and support our strong links as a school community. The first meeting will be
held on Monday 17th February at 6.30pm.
With a focus on teaching & learning we will continue to work in a valued partnership with
you all.
