Delay-Derived CBT Arrays: Conclusions:Conclusions:

This paper has described a method of designing ConstantBeamwidth Transducer (CBT) systems that are based on( ) ystraight-line and flat-surface array configurations, ratherthan the required circular arcs and curved surfaces ofconventional CBT arrays Unfortunately the arraysconventional CBT arrays. Unfortunately, the arraysrequire much more complex processing than that requiredby the conventional CBT arrays. The required processing includes multiple channels ofsignal delays and power amplifiers. Fortunately, allprocessing is frequency independent and thus is muchprocessing is frequency independent and thus is mucheasier to implement. The signal delays are used toapproximate the required curved lines and surfaces of the

conventional CBT array.

Conclusions Cont.:Advantages

Uniform coveragegProvides extremely uniform beamwidth, directivity, and off-axisfrequency response over a wide bandwidth (an advantage shared withconventional CBT arrays).

Simple constructionThe array is based on straight-line and flat-panel configurations. Theseshapes are easier to work with and more convenient from a practicalstandpoint than the curved lines and surfaces of the conventional CBTstandpoint than the curved lines and surfaces of the conventional CBTarray.

Change coverage angles easilyTh l f th b h d b j t i l h iThe coverage angle of the array can be changed by just simply changingdelay values.

Simple processing

All processing is frequency independent (all-pass gain and delay only).

Conclusions Cont.:Advantages Cont.

Easily steeredyThe array can be steered by simply changing delay values. The delaychanges effectively tilt the array in the desired direction.

No horizontal polar bulgep gDoes not exhibit the ±90° right-left horizontal polar bulge or pressurebuild up exhibited by the conventional CBT array.

Vertical axis symmetryy yThe polar pattern is symmetrical around the vertical axis of the array.

Conclusions Cont.:Disadvantages

Complex processingp p gIs relatively complex because it requires separate channels ofdelays and power amplifiers.

Polar wideningPolar wideningExhibits widening of polar response at extreme off axis angles ascompared to the conventional CBT array. This can be used to advantagein some situations.

Requires lots of small wide-band drivers!Requires the use of a large number of small identical wide-bandtransducers (a disadvantage in common with conventional CBT arrays).Well behaved operation to 10 kHz requires a source spacing of no moreWell behaved operation to 10 kHz requires a source spacing of no morethat 1 in (25 mm) which implies transducers no larger than about 0.95 in(24mm). This could be a potential advantage when manufacturingeconomies of scale are considered due to the large number of transducersrequired
