Implementation This Guided Reading Detectives Unit can be used in a variety of ways: * Use the flip-flap books and briefcase for your guided reading books. As you read your guided reading books with your groups, decide which skill you want to work on with your group. You can use each flip-flap book with a different book or you can implement multiple skills with one book and complete those flip-flap books. * You can assign the flip-flap books and briefcase to your higher level reading group and assign a longer more in-depth chapter book. The students can work on each flip-flap book for the chapter book that they are reading. They will complete all of the skills In the flip-flap books for their chapter book and when they have completed their briefcase, they will have a completed Chapter Book Investigation on a specific book. * You can also use these flip-flap books for notebooking as well. If you do not want to create the Investigation Briefcase, you can assign a variety of flip-flap books to your students to complete and adhere them in their reading or language arts notebooks.
To make the briefcase, you need 2 sheets of 12x18 manila tagboard. Fold the two sheets in half and use a long-arm stapler to staple them on the center fold. Have the students TRACE two handles from brown construction paper and adhere the handles to the inside of the first page and last page of the briefcase. If you do not want to add the Phonics Matchbooks, only use one sheet of 12x18 manila tagboard and one half sheet of manila tag board so that you have a 4-page briefcase.

Reading Detectives Flip-Flap Books
The following pages are the Flip-Flap Book printables that the students will complete for each story they read, for a longer chapter book, or to use during your Guided Reading groups to accompany your guided reading books. All of the printables are double-sided with the exception of Crack the Case for Cause and Effect and Events in the Investigation for sequencing the story. For best results, it is recommended that you print out each flip-flap book on your HOME printer first to make a Master Copy of each flip-flap book. First, print out the front cover of the printable. Then RE-FEED that page into your printer to print the lines on the back of it. They will align perfectly front to back. It may take you a few tries to figure out how your printer feeds the paper in to get it to print the correct way. However, once you figure this out, it will be smooth sailing. After you make a MASTER COPY of each flip-flap book, you can use your large copy machine to make double-sided copies of each flip-flap book for your students.

To make the briefcase, I use 2 sheets of 12 x 18 manila tag board. I fold the sheets in half and use a long-arm
stapler to staple on the center fold. You will have a 6 page briefcase to
adhere your Guided Reading Detective Flip-Flap books.
These are photos of a completed briefcase with all of the flip-flap books adhered to the inside pages. If you do not want to add the phonics matchbooks, you only have to add one 12 x 18 sheet
and one half sheet of manila tagboard to make the briefcase.

on the page so the tab sticks out. Then have the students fold back and forth like a fan.

What’s the Scene? This flip-flap book is double-sided. After it is copied, it must

Crack the Case
This flip-flap book is to work on Cause and Effect. This is a one-
sided flip-flap book. It needs to be folded like an accordion on the
dark black lines and the thin black lines between each cause/effect
relationship.

Events in the Investigation
This flip-flap book is to work on Sequencing the events in a story.
There are two versions of this flip-flap book. One flip-flap book has 6 flaps; first, next, then, after that, last, and
finally and the other flip-flap book has 4 flaps; first, next, then, and last. The pages must be cut out AROUND the
black borders and stapled on the left side.
