The Subjunctive MoodThere are TWO ways to express the subjunctive (past and present)

El Presente

Yo dudo que los chiles sean picantes. I doubt that the chilles are hot.

El imperfecto

Yo dudaba que los chiles fueran picantes. I doubted that the chillies were hot.

WEIRDOThe imperfect subjunctive is also used in those cases in which the subjunctive is required but the verb of the main clause is in the past tense or conditional. It is important to know the expressions on your WEIRDO handout.

Wish, want, emotion, impersonal expression, recommendation, doubt, denial,and ojalá

The Past SubjunctiveThe past subjunctive is used in the same contexts and situations as the present subjunctive, exceptthat it generally describes actions, events, or conditionsthat have already happened.

Me sorprendió que Uds. no vinieran.

It surprised me that you didn’t come.

Mi padre dudaba que nosotros comiéramos toda la pizza.

My father doubted that we ate the whole pizza.

Past Subjunctive EndingsStart with the preterit tense “ellos,” form (-aron/

-ieron) and then drop the (-on): (FOR ALL THE FORMS)

Ellos comieron = comieron = comier-

Ellos hablaron =hablaron = hablar-

Ellos escribieron = escribieron = escribier-

Past Subjunctive EndingsOnce you have dropped the “ON” from the ellos preterit tense, then you can add the following endings:

AR ER/IR

Yo -a -a

Tú -as -as

Él/Ella/Ud. -a -a

Nosotros -amos -amos * accent mark is added to the last

vowel in the stem

Ellos/Ellas/Uds. -an -an

Past Subjunctive EndingsStart with the preterit tense “ellos,” form then drop (-on) and the imperfect subjunctive endings:

Form the past subjunctive by taking preterit tense (ellos) then drop (-on) and then adding the appropriate Imperfect subjunctive ending.

For example, let's conjugate: tener

We start with the preterit “ellos” form: tuvieron

We drop the ”-on" ending: tuvier-

We'll use the “yo" form for this example: tuviera

There are NO IRREGULAR VERBS other than whatever irregularities exist in the preterit form.

Examples with the Present Subjunctive

Present - Es importante que él venga

Future - Será importante que él venga.

Present perfect - He querido que él venga.

Command - Dígale que venga.

If the WEIRDO in the main clause is conjugated in these tenses, use the PAST subjunctive.

Preterit – Fue importante que él viniera. Imperfect – Era importante que él viniera.

Pluperfect – Había recomendado que él viniera.
