wood Day and the Warner Bros Studios tour—which is our
personal favourite article; being HUGE Harry Potter fans!

troduction of our very own puzzle page; also remember to

planet! Hope you enjoy!
Editor & Director (Megan & Eloise)
Introduction: On Friday 13th 2012 Megan Isherwood, Billy George
Standage and myself went to the Warner Brother studios to check
out the newest and in my opinion, the most brilliant attraction this
year, the one all muggles have been waiting for: The Making of
Harry Potter! Warning this article includes spoilers!
Megan being run over by the
night bus.
Billy and George in the
Weasley’s Ford Anglia
car.
The muggles (non-magical people) being
crushed, the Ministry of Magic statue.
When we first entered we watched a film including
the comments from the cast and crew about the films,
books and how it had become so famous, but after
the film was when the real magic started to happen;
the cinema screen rose up to reveal the entry to the
great hall. We went through the most beloved sets
from the films such as Dumbledore’s office, Hagrid’s
hut, the Weasley’s dining room and many other bril-
liant sets that made the movies so great. We also saw
the very detailed costumes of all the characters in-
cluding Harry’s invisibility cloak and the make-up
and hair really showed how much detail they put into
the looks of the muggles, witches, wizards and crea-
tures.
We took as many
pictures as we possi-
bly could and spent
as much time as we
could taking pictures
on the famous night
bus as possible.
Overall, this attrac-
tion was an amazing
experience for the
whole family and we
would recommend it
to anyone, even if
you’re not keen on
the movies, as this
experience is fun,
uplifting and interest-
ing to be a part of.

do it again next year”

On the 23rd of may the famous comic book writer and author Tony Lee came to Hall Mead
school to talk to the year 7’s. It was an exciting and inspirational talk about how he became the
amazing writer he is today. At the start of the talk Tony explained to all the year 7’s that when he
was aged 10 he hated reading. He detested English lessons and writing. He never read a book and
enjoyed it until he was about 10, when an author came into his school and told him the wonders of
reading and writing. He started reading comics and as time went on Tony challenged himself and
stated to read more ambitious books such as Lord of the Rings. I spoke to a couple of the lucky
year 7’s after hearing the New York's times number 1 writer . They said “Tony was very funny”
and has “inspired us to read more”.
By Jessica Hickey
Tony Lee has written various novels including “Dodge and Twist” a sequel to the famous Charles
Dickens novel “Oliver Twist”. He is also famous by writing graphic novels such as: Doctor Who,
X-men and Sherlock Holmes. After his 30 minutes of talking about his struggle of writing and
becoming an author he then involved the kids by doing an activity. He picked 4 people from the
audience and made them act out a certain story Tony made up on the spot. Not only were the chil-
dren in hysterics but found the whole experience rather entertaining. After the hilarious story about
a super hero and sidekick saving a princess from an evil villain, he settled the pupils down by tell-
ing them a scary story. The story started off with an old lady who loved playing puzzles, one day
the old woman had a knock on her door and as she looked down there was a whit box. The lady
opened up the box and there laid a new jigsaw puzzle, so naturally the women started the puzzle
and realized the puzzle was a picture of her doing a puzzle. Then to our horror half way through
the story Tony screamed and made the whole room jump!!
Overall Tony really made a difference to these young people’s thoughts on English, reading and
writing. He truly is an amazing writer and author and deserves being the New York Times bestsel-
ler author. If you feel interested in any of Tony’s work we recommend : Doctor Who, Star ship
Troopers, Sherlock Holmes and Danger Academy. Log onto his website for more details...
Dwane Johnson ‘The Rock’ was
born on the 2nd of may 1972 and his
grandfather was Pete Maivia; former
wrestler and his father Rocky John-
son was also a pro wrestler. So it
was in the Rocks blood to wrestle.
He played in the Canadian football
league for a few years too. In 1996
he made his WWE debut competing
in Madison Square Gardens and a
few years later he won the intercon-
tinental title. He has won the WWE
and world heavyweight title
throughout his career. However, he
came back 7 years after being gone
for 7 years to host Wrestle mania.
He’s very inspirational and has
achieved so much. He also has acted
in a number of films for adults and
children. He has played a vast
amount of roles but is famous for
his big muscles, high eyebrow and
‘hard’ persona.

Now, Portal 2, this is just simply a great game! The storyline is the
second best thing about it! It follows on from Portal 1 with you ‘Chell’
waking up in Aperture Laboratories and you meeting this blue eyed
core called ‘Wheatly’, he tries to help you escape but to do that you
have to go through the room where the main robot GlaDOS is de-
stroyed. She is evil and you accidently wake her up and she starts to
give you tests to do with the Portal Gun. Later on, Wheatly becomes
evil and takes over GlaDOS’s body, at the end, *SPOILER ALLERT*
you send Wheatly to space and put GlaDOS in her body.
The gameplay is the best thing about the game! You have this
‘Portal Gun’ which shoots portals. There are two portals, an
orange one and a blue one. Once you shoot both portals, you
can walk through one and come out the other, you use that to
solve puzzles and tests.
There is not much extra stuff, there is a co-op mode where
you and a friend can play as robots to solve tests together,
and there is a new make your own levels DLC that came out
on the 8th of May!
Storyline: 9/10
Gameplay: 10/10
Extra stuff: 7/10
Other APPS.... Talking tom cat is a very popular app that has got millions of downloads. All you have to do is say something into the microphone and it repeats it in a funny voice. You can also record what you say and upload it to face book, YouTube or twitter. Overall I think that this app is very good, enter-taining and funny. I would rate it a 9.4/10 By Jamie
Overall Rating: 8/10
Storyline: 6/10
The storyline is alright, but I think it isn’t as good as
some other stories. The storyline is basically, you play
as this character that you make and you are a rookie at
racing. You join the Modnation Racers championship
and try to win the grand prize of $100,000. You are
coached by a retired cart racer who won the champi-
onship a few years in the past.
Gameplay: 8/10
The gameplay is pretty good. You can do lots of
stunts when you are racing and go over ramps, you
can get power ups and shoot missiles or create force
fields to distract the other drivers. The main reason I
gave this an 8/10 is because it is a bit too much like
MarioKart with all the power ups and tracks.
Extra stuff: 9/10
This is a good game to everyone who likes crea-
tive games. If you like littlebigplanet and racing
games, you will love this. You can create your
own tracks, racers and cars with simple tools and
share them with your friends!

Yet again teachers have come to us with countless amount of students who have exceeded them-
selves! Good work everyone!
Congratulations to Ryan Saunders! He has made a super human effort and has moved from an E
grade to a B grade since taking his Year 11 English mock! Keep up the good work!
A massive well done to Tilly Jones and Alice Coleman for their fantastic castle which netted them
first place prize of a £20 Lakeside Gift Voucher. The castle exceeded itself with its creative de-
fence system and its great use of natural resources.
Ms Wooton would like to recommend a number of people:
Elle Andreo for working consistently hard in German and always having a positive attitude.
George Heath has worked very well this year and always has a positive attitude.
Max Dean for all of his hard work and always ready to participate in class.
Nathan Merry has also worked very well this year.
Kieran Riddell has been working consistently hard in French.
James Davis for coming to every lesson with a positive attitude.
Keep it up!
Mrs Sharma would like to say a massive well done to Thomas Livesey, Jessica Hickey, Megan
Wood, Sam Brotherston and Daniel Pollock. These students amaze her every week! They work
extremely hard and produce some brilliant work. Well done guys!
Stephanie Tomlinson of 9WP achieved the first Level 8 that I have EVER given in Citizenship for her essay on
whether cannabis should be legalised. She must have spent hours on it and wrote pages of excellent, well argued
analysis.
She was followed by other students who also achieved level 8: Katie Jones of 9CJ, Megan Da-
vies of 9TP and Katharine Moss of 9TP. AMAZING...

Review;
This film promises to entertain and doesn’t fail. I was pleasantly surprised! I enjoyed
this film because I am not a comic book fan at all. The basic plot is them being as-
sembled after a energy source is stolen from a CIA weapons facility that could help
the villain take over the world. The film is packed with humour and enough action to
keep you happy. Why I didn’t rate it 10/10 is it loses pace in the middle but it does
make up for it in the awesome ending.

Amazon Kindle Review Ease Of Use
I'm going to start with the first thing you notice on a device, its ease of use because, if you can't
use it, you won't use it. The Kindle has 14 buttons: Home, back, keyboard, options, up, down, left,
right, select, next page (X2), previous page (X2) and power. Now to some this may seem confus-
ing but trust me, it is very easy to understand with all buttons (except power) labelled, you can't go
wrong. This gives a very good user experience that anyone can get to grips with very quickly, I
wrote all of this 5 minutes after getting the Kindle, that's how easy it is to understand. The other
good thing is that it only has 1 connection port in it, for the power/USB into computer which
means no confusion when trying to plug it into various machines.
Display
This is the second most important thing, if you can't see anything, you won't be able to read any-
thing and this is lovely to look at, it looks just like paper and the E-ink looks really nice as you
switch from page to page it has a nice inverse effect that turns blank and then comes onto the next
page, all in under a second. Whilst reading it shows how far through the book you are at the bot-
tom which is always nice to see how much you have read. The one problem I have with it that
really annoys me is that it seems like it is constantly off and though that is good because it is effec-
tively off, this really annoys me but it is something you will get over if you give it time and it's a
matter of getting used to the machine.
Features
Yes, believe it or not it is more than just a book reader. You can view images on the device and
you can also surf the web! The internet browser is experimental and therefore I was not allowed to
try it but the 1 flaw I see, without even having to try it is that to press letters, you need to navigate
to them using the arrows so it can take some time to type in a web page. You can archive books
and images, create a collection, go to the Kindle store, enable Wi-Fi or search through your books
from the homepage all of which can be done in a book but you can also: Change font size, view
book description, add a bookmark, make a note and highlight certain parts for future use.
Battery Life
This thing lasts up to a month and can be charged in three hours which, no matter how you look at
it, is pretty amazing. This is because unless you are changing pages it is, in effect, off. The E-ink
stays in place so there no need to use electricity.
Overall
This is an amazing device that doesn't take ages to charge yet once charged lasts for ages, is very
easy on the eye to read as it is very much like paper, very easy to use, customisable and cheap at
£89 , so it definitely worth it for anyone wanting to try an e-book reader so take a look!
Look out for our very own set of Kindles at Hall Mead’s library!
They can be used by anyone during lesson time, so be on your best
behaviour to be in with a chance to check them out!
Mrs Ward had kindly funded nine new Kindles for the Library, making a total of fourteen!! Thank you!

The Student voice
Here’s what’s on our student government’s agenda at the moment: We’re currently in discussion with the Senior Management Team about the best ways to help fairly distribute the 150 Olympic tickets that have been allocated to Hall Mead School. We are always taking suggestions from the whole student body, so please don’t hesitate to contact any member of student voice. We’re currently also trying to increase the profile of our student gov-ernment through the Logo Competition – the winner which will be de-cided on Tuesday May 22! There is a great prize for our winner. Furthermore, we are calling for volunteers to assist Hall Mead’s Olympic Garden party on Saturday 30th June – we need students to help marshal events, organise cars, do guided tours of the Academy and various other small jobs. Student Voice is also trying to streamline and help boost awareness for all the various charities Hall Mead students support. We have started a new Charity Committee open to all students to help link forms together and get the ideas flowing on the best ways to raise money for our charities. Finally , we hope to become involved with the Havering Youth Coun-cil to give Hall Mead students a bigger voice in Havering. Wow...that’s a lot of stuff! So readers...please help out and do what you can to support STUDENT VOICE
Book Reveiws
By Sam Crow and Eloise Standage
In this part of the paper, Eloise and I will be writing book reviews. A lot of these books will be available
in the library. Keep on reading!
Gone
By Michael Grant
School bus Sam is a hero. At least he is until everyone over the age of 15 disappears. And then the chil-
dren start developing strange powers... Can Sam hold Perdido Beach together?
Gone is a brilliant book. It is the first in the “Gone” series. It features a fantastic array of characters in-
cluding the treacherous Caine, heroic Sam, intelligent Astrid and evil Drake. There are a lot of different
powers included as well such as superspeed, invisibility, telekinesis and heat beams. I would highly rec-
ommend this book. I absolutely loved it!
The Hunger Games
By Suzanne Collins
Katniss lives in District 12. She has to hunt to keep her family alive. Then she volunteers for the Hunger Games and her life
changes forever...
This book was AMAZING! The writing is impeccable and the characters are fabulous. You can really connect with Katniss
and her emotions. All the different characters have such different personalities like drunken Haymitch, caring Peeta and
extravagant Effie. The whole series is amazing! This book could be aimed at boys as there is a lot of violence in it but girls
will like it too as there is also a love story included! The Hunger Games is also a great
movie which has recently come out! Read this book!
The movie “The Hunger Games” is in cinemas now!
Water for Elephants
Sara Gruen:
I watched this film not long ago with my friends last year and enjoyed the film so much that I wanted to read the book as
well, this book is definitely a must read for anyone who loves action, romance and animals.
This book is basically the story about a guy called Jacob Jankowski a veterinary student becomes homeless when his parents
are killed; he abandons his studies to join a travelling circus.
I really liked the way different chapters changed from different points in time, when the main character is ninety or ninety in
a care home and then when he is a young student on the run. The romance between Jacob and the other main character
Marlena, a married woman with an abusive husband gradually builds up during the novel, not just the relation between
Jacob and Marlena, but also the connection with Jacob and the elephant Rosie is the main reason why I love this book, a
great read.
Carrie
Stephen King:
The author Stephen King is well known for his psychological thriller and horror books, this is one of my all-time favourite
books and would suggest this book to anyone who loves disasters and horror.
Carrie White is a girl with a special power of telekinesis, but when you have an unstable Christian mum
that thinks you’re cursed by the devil this power can haunt your life. Carrie is picked on for having a
deluded mother, her bad sense of clothing and the way she appears to everyone, but when she finally has
her first period and her hormones pick in Carrie can turn into something way out of this world.
I liked Carrie’s character the most because throughout the whole book Carrie’s expectations of becom-
ing normal grows and grows, Carrie does earn some respect from other characters in the book, but ends
in a massive climax at the end of the novel, this book great to read if you like disaster and prefer shorter
books.
Dear Agony Aunts
I am having trouble fitting into my form. Some-
thing has happened over the last few weeks and
I don’t seem to have any friends. They leave
me out in form time and I am forced to be alone
during lesson. They make up lots of rumours
and mean things about me, which I don’t think
they realised how much it hurts me. I don’t
know what to do. I don’t want it to go any fur-
ther, but I don’t want my
form to hate me more than
they already do.
Dear Nervous Pupil,
There is a group of people
called Cyber Mentors who
can help you when you are
getting bullied. every Fri-
day, the Cyber mentors meet and allow you to
come and tell them anything you would like to
know. What you should do is tell someone the
problems you are having and not bottle it up
inside. You need to stop your form, before they
hurt someone else.
Agony Aunt
Dear Agony Aunt,
I’ve had this problem for almost 2 years now,
and it’s really starting to get me down. You see,
I like this boy; but he’s really popular and I’m
not. I don’t know why I like him. I don’t want
to like him. I get angry when I see him flirting
with other girls but I don’t know why. Why do
I even have feelings for him?
Anonymous yr9
Dear Anonymous yr9
All girls have boy trouble at some stage in
their life and boys go through the same thing.
It is part of growing up and it is not unnatural
to like someone. You say whenever you see
him with other girls you get jealous, try not to
get jealous he is probably just being a typical
teenage boy. He probably doesn’t know that
you like him so if you want to go out with him
just tell him how you feel. The worst thing is
that he could say is no. It’s good to take risks
in your life.
Agony Aunt
P.S This is the same for boys too!
Dear agony aunt,
I am having problems with a pupil in my
form. At first our friendship was fine then I
heard that she has been spreading rumours
about me. I keep on asking her to stop but
she denies all of it I don’t want to lose her as
a friend I’ve known her since we where lit-
tle. Can you please help? I don't know what
to do.
Anonymous
Dear anonymous pupil,
This sounds very complicated try to speak to
her about it and tell her your feelings and you
don't have to be best friends you could just get
along. If she carries on then go see your form
tutor and tell her you don't like the things she
has been saying about you behind your back.
Hope this helps

For the last couple of weeks Year 8s have been going to the Museum of London Docklands in preparation
for their History assessments. As a Year 8 myself, I have been to the Docklands and found it a little boring.
Although the talk by the museum curator was quite interesting (I never knew that people used to paint their
teeth black!), walking around the slavery exhibition was a little boring and some of the information was
hard to find. However a lot of us had fun on the coach and at lunch, and overall it was quite a good trip.
3 Stars!

Good luck to everyone who will be taking part in the event . Paige Beaumont and Katie Nicholles: These two girls have just recently left the school. Also they took the team the team to the national badminton finals last year.” They will be missed very much for their loy-alty, dedication to the sport and they do have a good sense of humour! Jamie
Yr 8 Trip to Museum of London Docklands
ART TRIP REVIEW
The year 7s went to an art trip last week to TATE BRITAIN.
They had a fantastic time as the weather was great and even the
teacher's were caught sunbathing on the grass after lunch.
The trip entailed a lovely trip through London, a short walk
through the gallery and a period of time in the Picasso lounge.
This part was truly fantastic as we got to draw some of Pi-
casso’s weird cubic style paintings. Later we had time to let off
some energy outside and a very long trip back to Upminster!
Overall a great trip 4 stars
Thank you Mrs Davidson and the Art department for arranging
this.
