1.0 GENERAL:

1.1 Introduction

This method statement is given as a general guidance for conducting the works

and their sequence. However, during their execution, variations may be adopted to

suit unforeseen conditions, within the framework of the Specifications, and in

accordance with the Engineer’s directions.

1.2 Scope of Works

This method statement outlines the procedures for construction of Stone Columns

using Rammed Aggregate Pier to enhance the soil shear strength and bearing

capacity. By introducing the rammed pier will increase the composite strength and

stuffiness of the compressible soil. The piers exhibit a high angle of internal friction

that increase the shearing resistance to control the stability of the structure.

The Impact System uses vertical displacement Rammed Aggregate Piers (RAPs) to reinforce good to poor soils, including loose sands, silts, mixed soil layers, uncontrolled fill and soils below the ground water table.

Scope of the work for TMF comprises the following:

1.2.1 Execution of the stone columns as per the designed approved Drawings and as

per project particular Specifications and standards.

1.2.2 Conducting four number of Plate Load tests.

1.2.3 Conducting Single Zone Load Test.

Separate method statements for items 1.2.2 &1.2.3 will be submitted upon

identifying the test location by the Engineer

2.0 SITE PREPARATION:

2.1 Location and Protection of Existing Services

The underground or overhead services, if any in close proximity to the stone

columns locations with minimum distance of 5 m will be located and exposed by

hand excavation, and protected by Main Contractor Before commencing stone

column works, Main Contractor should ensure that, clear space minimum 5 m and

accesses are available for the movement of the Rammer rig / plant at all stone

columns locations.

2.2 Site Installation:

Site installations will be established in the allocated area. The allocated area will be

maintained in a dry neat and orderly condition.

2.3 Survey Works:

The provision of main grid lines & Bench marks at all stone columns location shall

be made by the Main Contractor

2.4 Rammed Aggregate Pier installation Sequence:

TMF will provide Main Contractor with a daily sequence for the stone column

installation sequence during the next day,

The installation will start from the inner column to the outer one, to ensure the whole

designated area compacted and the columns reach to the desired level, or the

ground reach to the refusal i.e. the ground is properly compacted for which the soil

bearing capacity, shear strength, and the settlement have been improved

2.5 Stone grading:

Well graded aggregate will be delivered to the site as per the design approved by

the Engineer.

3.0 Construction of The Rammed Aggregate Pier :

The unique installation process displaces soil during installation and utilizes vertical impact ramming energy to construct vertical displacement RAPs, which exhibit unsurpassed strength and stiffness. The installation procedure produces lateral compaction and pre-stressing and pre-straining of the surrounding matrix soil. RAP solutions are designed to provide total and differential settlement control and increase bearing support to meet project requirements.

The Impact System Method

3.1 The cavity is created to full designed depth by pushing a specially designed mandrel and tamper foot using a relatively large static force augmented by dynamic impact energy. Tamper nominal foot diameters as per the design piers diameters and design depth measured from the bench mark level or the ground refuse level , depending on design requirements. This method eliminates spoils as all penetrated soils are displaced laterally. The bottom flappers prevents soil from entering to the hollow stem pipe 3.2 After driving to design depth, the hollow mandrel serves as a conduit for the placement of aggregate. The aggregate is placed inside the mandrel and the mandrel is lifted, the bottom of the pier. The tamper foot is lifted approximately 1 meter and then driven back down 0.7 meter, forming a 0.3 meter thick compacted lift. The compaction is achieved through static force and dynamic impact energy from the hammer. The Impact hammer densifay the aggregate vertically and the foot forces aggregate laterally into cavity sidewalls. This results in excellent coupling with surrounding soils and reliable settlement control and superior strength and stiffness.

Following installation, vertical displacement RAPs support shallow foundations, The footing stresses are attracted to the stiff RAPs, resulting in engineered settlement control.

3.3 Advantage of the Rammed Aggregate Pier: Because the compaction process is vertical with horizontal displacement, the

reinforcement does not produce a “mudded zone”. Sidewall pre-stressing and pre-straining pre-mobilizes the lateral deflections that

occur as the pier bulges. Direct ramming action provides much higher friction angles that result in higher

strength and stiffness. The piers have a consistent diameter due to the regular construction sequence of

pulling and pushing.
