Step1.ConnecttheVideoCamera

CreateaNewProject

ToimportyourvideointoiMovie,youwillneedtohaveadigitalcamcorderwithrecorded

footage,a9-pinto4-pinFirewirecable,andaMacwithiMovie'09installed.

Plugthe4-pin(small)endofthecableintotheDVoutputonthecamcorderandthe9-pin

(large)endofthecableintotheFirewireportontheMaccomputer.

Project.Thiswillopentheprojectwindow.

Step4.Giveyournewprojectafilenameandchoosetheaspectratio.

Besuretoselecttheaspectratioofyourvideo.

toplaymode.

ThiswillallowiMovietocommunicatewithyourdigitalvideocamera,

andanewwindowwillpop-overtheiMovieinterface.

manuallycontrolwhatfootageisimported

andhavetheabilitytofast-forwardand

rewindthroughthefootage,selectManual.

4.Analyzeforstabilizationafterimport:Camerashakeisaproblemwhenshootingvideowithoutatripod.iMoviecananalyzeyourvideoandeliminatesomeofthisshakiness.iMoviecananalyzethevideowhenyou

importit(atime-consumingprocesswhenyou'rewaitingtoedityourvideo)oriMoviecananalyzetheclipsonly

whentheyareactuallyusedinaproject(lesstime-consuming,butitdoesinterrupttheeditingprocess).

Makeyourdecisionbeforeimporting.

5.ClickImportandletiMoviegotowork.

Step5.ImportVideo-Part4

Whenthevideosegmentisfinishedimporting,iMoviewillindicatetheprocessiscompletethat

anamountofvideowasimported.ClickOK.ThiswillmoveyoubacktothemainiMovie

windowandallowyoutobegineditingyournewevent.

Step6.AddVideoClipstotheProjectViewer

ClickononeoftheclipsintheEventViewerinthebottomhalf

oftheiMovieinterface.

Ayellowborderwillappearontheclip.

Ateachsideofthisbordertherearetwoverticalbars(1.).

Usethesebarstoselecttheexactfootageyouwanttouseinyourproject.Withthefootage

selected,dragtheselectedportionintotheProjectViewerbyclickinginsidetheyellowborder

anddraggingtheselectedportionuptotheProjectViewer.

Ifyouwantthewholeclip,stretchtheyellowbordertoboththeleftandrightsidesoftheclip.

Ifyouwantdifferentpartsofasingleclip,usetheyellowbarstoidentifyandthendrageachportionseparately.

Onceasectionofacliphasbeenused,anorangebarappearsnearthebottomoftheclip;

however,anyusedportionofaclipcanbeusedagainandagain.

Step7.ReorderClipsintheProjectViewer

Intheprojectvieweryoucangetthesame

yellowborderbyclickingonthevideoclips.

Organizeentireclipsbyselectingaclipand

thensimplydragginganddroppingtheclip

inthepositionyouwant.Youwillnoticea

verticalgreenlineinthepositiontheclip

willappear.Youcannotdropaclipontop

ofanotherclip.

1.OnequickwaytogetridofaportionofvideoistoselecttheclipintheProjectViewer,use

theyellowframetoselecttheparttodelete,thenclickEdit>DeleteSelection.Besureyou've

selectedthepartyouwanttodelete,notthepartyouwanttokeep.

Tosplitaclipusetheyellowborderandselecttheportionoftheclipyouwanttosplit.Goto

EditmenuandclickSplitClip.Splittingaclipallowsyoutoputatransitionbetweentwo

sectionsofthesameclip.Iftheyellowbordertouchestherightorleftendofaclip,theclip

willbesplitintotwoclips;ifitdoesnottouchoneofthetwoedges,itwillbesplitintothree.If

Edit>Splitwereappliedtotheexamplehere,itwouldbesplitintotwoseparateclips.

MakeAdjustmentstoIndividualClips

Onceallyourclipsaretrimmedandinthedesiredorder,

youcanmakeadjustmentstoindividualclips.Fromthetoolbar,youhavethefollowingthreechoices:

1.Addavoiceover(narration)totheselectedclip.

2.Cropaclip.(Thisisnotthesameastrimming.Trimmingcutstheendingandstarting

points.Croppingallowsyoutoselectonlyaportionofthevideoimageitself.)

3.ShowtheInspector.(Thisgivesyouaccesstovideoeffects,speedeffects,brightness,

contrast,andaudiocontrolsfortheclipsnativeaudio.)

Step8.AddaVoice-OvertoaClip.

Thefirsticonisthevoice-

overoption.

Clickthemicrophoneicon

fromthetoolsandthisbox

appears.

1.Chooseyourpreferred

microphonefromthedrop-

downlist.

2.Checktheinputlevelandadjustaccordingly.(Alwaysspeakintoamicrophonetotestit,

don'tblow!)

3.Adjustnoisereductionandturnonoroffvoiceenhancementasneeded.

4.Ifyouwanttheclip'snativeaudiotoplaywhileyourecord,checkthisbox;ifyoudonotwant

theclipsaudiotoplay,leavetheboxunchecked.

5.iMovietellsyoutoselectacliptobeginrecording.Youcanbeginrecordingatanyspotinany

clip;simplyclickatthepointintheclipyouwanttobeginrecording.Onceaclipisselected,a

count-downtimerwillcountdownfrom3andtherecordingwillbegin.NOTE:recordingwill

beginandcontinueacrossallfollowingclipsuntilstopped.Stoptherecordingbyclicking

anywhereintheProjectViewer.

Oncestopped,iMovieaddtheaudiototheclipautomatically.

Todeleteaclipandre-record,selecttheclip(it'sapurplebarundertheclips)andhitthedelete

key.

fromiPhotoforuseinyour

Intheexamplehere,theCroptoolisselected.Notethefinegreenborderaroundtheentire

clipwindow.Placeyourmouseoverthelowerleftcorner(2.)andthemouseturnsintoa"+".

Clickanddragthegreenborderto"crop"thevideoimage.(Note:thiswilllikelyresultin

reducedvideoquality.)Toseetheresultsofthecrop,clickthePlaybutton(3.).Shouldyou

need,thevideocanberotatedusingtherotationleftandrotationrightbuttons(4.).When

croppingiscomplete,clicktheDonebutton(5.).

Step10.TheInspector-ClipInspector

Thethirdiconistheinspector.Clickonthisbuttonanda

windowopenswhereavarietyofaudioandvideo

adjustments.Youcanadjustclipspeed,motion,colorand

volumecontrols.

Inthisexample,theCliptabisselected(1.)Theexample

showsthattheclipis19.4secondslong.

Youcanapplyfunvideoeffectssuchasagedfilm,cartoon,

vignette,andsci-fitotheclipusingtheVideoEffects

chooser(2.).Clickandthenselectfromthewindowthatappears.

Youcanspeedupacliporslowdownaclipbychanging

thespeedslider(3.)(turtle=slow;rabbit=fast).

Ifyouwanttheentirecliptoplayinreverse,checkthe

Reversebox(4.).

Step11.TheInspector-AudioInspector

Inthissample,theAudiotabisselected(1.).

Youcanchangetheentireclip'svolumelevelbymoving

thevolumeslider(2.).

Ducking(3.)reducesthevolumeofothertrackssothat

thisclip'saudioismoreprominent.Thisisusefulifyou

haveamusictrackrunningunderneathavideoclipand

wantthemusictobelowerthantheclip'saudio.

Fadein(4.)andFadeout(5.)giveyoucontroloverthe

clip'saudio.Withthesefades,youcancauseaclip'saudiotofadeinupto5secondsandfadeoutupto5seconds.

AddOtherMediatoYourProject

LocatedtotherightsideoftheiMovieinterfacearetheshow/hide

mediabuttons.Thereare5buttons;inorderfromlefttoright,the5

buttonsare:

1.MusicandSoundEffects

2.Photos

Step12.AddMusicandSoundEffects

Toaddaudiotrackstoyourproject,clickonthe

MusicandSoundEffectsbutton.Browsetothe

soundeffectoriTunesitemandsimplydragit

toyourproject.

Ifyoudroptheaudioonaclipataspecific

pointinyourvideo,theaudiowillplayfrom

thatpointforwardtotheendofyourmovieor

theendoftheaudio,whicheverisless.To

shortenanaudiocliptoaspecificlength,trimtheclipbyclickingtoselectisandthendragging

theendoftheclipbackwardstowhereyou'dliketheaudiotostop.

Intheimage,anaudiofilenamed"ambient"hasbeentrimmedtoplaythroughonlytwoclips.

Ifyoudroptheaudiointheprojectwindow,butnotonaspecificclip,theaudiowillpay

throughouttheentire

Double-clickingthegreenaudioclippresentsyouwiththeInspectorandmostofthesame

optionsavailableonthevideoinspectorareavailableontheaudioinspector.

Step13.AddStillDigitalPhotos

Sometimes,youwanttoaddastillphototoyourvideorather

thanlive-actiondigitalvideoclips.Addingphotosiseasyifyour

photosarestorediniPhoto.Locateandclicktheshow/hide

photobuttonandbrowseforthephotoyouwouldliketoplace

intheproject.DraganddropthephotointotheProjectViewer

windowatthepointinyourvideowherethephotoshould

appear.(Youcan'tdropitonaclip;ithastobedroppedatthe

startofthevideo,betweentwoclips,orattheendofthe

video.)

Oncethere,clickingthecliponceandchoosingthe"gearbox"iconinthelowerleftcorneroftheclipgivesyouoptionsformakingadjustmentstotheclip.

With"ClipAdjustments,"youcanadjustthelengthofthephotoclipand/oraddvideoeffects.

With"VideoAdjustments,"youcanmakechangestothebrightness,contrast,exposure,and

saturation.

With"Cropping,KenBurns,andRotation,"youcancropthephoto,addsomephotopanningor

zooming,orrotateaphotoifnecessary.SeeStep9.foradditionaldetails.Whenyou've

completedcropping,rotating,oradding/removingKenBurnseffect,click"Done"intheupper

rightcornerofthepreviewwindow.

Step14.AddTitles

Youcanaddtexttoyourvideoclipsquiteeasilywith

iMovie.Youhavetheoptionofhavingtextappear

onaplanorpatternedbackgroundorontopofclips

inyourvideo.

Clickontheshow/hideiconwiththeletterT(for

titles).Theselectionoftitleslideswillappearinthe

lower-rightareaoftheiMoviewindow.Selectthetitleyouwantanddragitintoyourprojecttimeline.

Ifyouplacethetitleatthestartofyourvideo,attheendofyourvideoorbetweenindividual

clips,thebackgroundwindowwillappear.Selectanappropriatebackground.

Ifyouplacethetitledirectlyontoyourclipsthenthetitlewillappeardirectlyoverthevideo.

Therearethreelocationsoneachclipatitlecanbedropped.Eachishighlightedinbluewhen

youdragatitleonaclip.Youcandropthetitlesothatitappearsonlyonthefirstthirdofthe

clip(onlythefirstthirdoftheclipishighlightedinblue),youcandropitsothatitappearonthe

entireclip(theentireclipishighlightedblue),oryoucandropitsothatitappearsonthelast

thirdoftheclip.

Inanycase,whenatitlehasbeendropped,itappearsasabluebaracrossthetopoftheclip.

Double-clickthebluetitlecliptoshowtheinspectorwhereyoucanadjustthetimeoftitleclip.

EditthetextofyourtitlesbyclickingintheappropriatespotinthePreviewwindowwhenatitle

isselected.

Sometitlechoicesallowyoutochangefont;someothersdonot.
