Germanfest News!

A big Thank You to all the volunteers, the contributors, and the people who attended the 17

th

Annual Germanfest on June 2. We had a wonderful meal, good music, and great socializing. The Germanfest has become better than ever, attracting people from as far away as Topeka, and Overland Park. The Church was beautifully decorated and the Mass was wonderful. It is always rewarding to celebrate our heritage. Many of our parishioners worked tirelessly to provide you with a delicious meal and a great time. There are too many to list here, but they deserve our special thanks. Congratulations to our Germanfest Queen, Diana Charron; our Wine Princess, Jennifer Walker; and our Germanfest Pop Princess, Samantha Elmer. All did a great job! Betty and Duane Olberding, Germanfest Co-Chairs

In today’s Gospel passage, Jesus says that the Kingdom of God is like the mustard seed, which is tiny when it is planted but becomes a large shrub, so that the birds of the air can rest in its shade. The Fathers of the Church saw this as a symbol of the Church, growing from a small beginning to embrace the whole world with the nations of the earth resting under its protection. We who are Catholic have a duty to bring the faith to others that they may come to Christ in the Church. Our RCIA program begins Wednesday August 29

th at 7:00 PM in

Kinzler Hall. If you know of anyone who is interested in the faith, please invite them to come. They can call the Parish Office or contact Deacon Tim or Deacon Dean for more information.

The Immaculate Conception Altar Society is taking nominations for a new board of officers. All ladies of the parish are asked to call Joan Ponder, 913-651-2536 with names for nomination. Join us at our meeting on

Tuesday, June 26, as we elect a new board. New board will take over at the July 24 meeting.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Congratulations to our three new Parish Council members who were elected in last weekend’s Parish Council elections: Mandy Marshall, Colleen Rogers, and Mike Simonis. They will be serving a three year term on our Immaculate Conception—St. Joseph Parish Council beginning this coming September. I would also like to thank John Alexander and Van Nine for allowing their names to be put on the ballot after being nominated to serve on the Parish Council. Finally, many thanks to our three out-going Parish Council members, Mark Brown, Michelle Miller, and Jerry Overbey, who recently completed their three year term on the Parish Council. Our Parish Council usually meets on the second Tuesday night of the month at 7:00 PM in the Cook Room from September through May. Feel free to communicate any of your concerns or questions to any member of the Parish Council. Our 2018 Germanfest Committee met in Kinzler Hall this past Monday evening, June 11, to review every aspect of our June 2 Germanfest. Profits for this year’s Germanfest currently stand at $7,626.40 with some Silent Auction items yet to be picked up and paid for at the Parish Office. Although the number of patrons attending the event was down from last year, our profits for the parish are still the third highest ever in the past 17 years. Once again “danke schoen” to Betty & Duane Olberding for their dedicated labors in chairing the Germanfest! Fr. Tom Schrader, who has returned to Leavenworth following his four month sabbatical program at the Oblate School of Theology in San Antonio, Texas, has received word of his new assignment effective July 1. He has been named the new Associate Director of the Carmelite Society of the Little Flower in Darien, Illinois. The Little Flower Society is the financial development organization for our Carmelite Province of the Most Pure Heart of Mary. Darien is the site of our Provincial Headquarters, as well as Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Parish, the National Shrine of St. Therese, the Carmelite Spiritual Center, and the Titus Brandsma Priory for retired Carmelites. We will be hosting two farewell receptions for Fr. Tom next weekend. Coffee and rolls will be served in Kinzler Hall immediately after the 8:00 AM Mass at St. Joseph Church next Sunday, June 24. Also, immediately following the 10:30 AM Mass next Sunday, a light luncheon will be served in Miege Hall at Immaculate Conception Church. Both will be opportunities for our parishioners to wish Fr. Tom a fond farewell. Finally, I would like to wish all the fathers of our parish a Happy Fathers’ Day! Our weekend Masses will give all of us an opportunity to remember our own fathers, living or deceased, in our prayers. Certainly there is no time in history where the importance of the fathers of our families is more critical than in our present age.

God bless you always! Fr. David
