EMPOWERMENT BEGINS WITH ACCESSA first of its kind by any university in Singapore, the SMU Access initiative guarantees that every financially needy incoming Singaporean students will receive a financial aid package equal to the student’s full tuition fees. This will effectively make the entire university education tuition-free for eligible students.

SMU Access is seed-funded by a generous endowed gift of $8 million from the Quantedge Foundation, a local charity which aims to deliver impactful solutions to social issues and challenges in Singapore.

The inaugural batch of 19 Quantedge Foundation Scholars received their scholarships in AY2017/18 and about 20 freshmen will benefit from the Quantedge Foundation Scholarship in subsequent academic years.

CREATING A PATHWAY TO ETHICAL LEADERSHIPA member of SMU’s founding Board of Trustees, Mr Kuok Khoon Ean’s endowed donation of $5 million will provide support for both the SMU International Scholarships and the SMU Pathfinders Programme.

The SMU International Scholarships will encourage a balanced outlook in both academic excellence and community service from aspiring undergraduates joining us from the emerging economies of South and South-east Asia.

The SMU Pathfinders Programme is reflective of Mr Kuok’s vision of a new generation of leaders — resilient, tenacious and imbued with moral values. This programme is anchored on the principles of SMU Lifelessons, and acts as a four-year leadership, discovery and cultivation platform that deals with individual values, purpose and principles to shape moral and ethical leadership for the future.

A CULTURE OF PAYING IT FORWARDMr Kuok Khoon Hong, Chairman and CEO of Wilmar International Ltd, has increased the value of the KKH and Wilmar Scholarships with an additional $3 million gift that will benefit as many as 16 financially disadvantaged students every year in perpetuity. Since inception, 67 students have benefitted from these scholarships, enabling them to embark on an educational journey that is enriching and impactful.

Mr Kuok’s steadfast support to SMU began in 2008 with the establish-ment of the KKH Applied Research Fund. As one of our top five donors, Mr Kuok’s gifts have also opened doors to opportunities in the emerging markets. The Wilmar Overseas Internship provides exposure for our students to experience working in a culturally diverse environment across Asia and Africa; while the Wilmar Community Service Projects have helped foster the spirit of giving back with our students undertaking 14 community service projects in various parts of China since 2011.

In addition, Mr Kuok had seed funded the Lee Kuan Yew Global Business Plan Competition, which is organised by our Institute of Innovation and Entrepreneurship biennially. The International Trading Institute at SMU is also a beneficiary of Mr Kuok’s generosity, with Wilmar as an industry partner.

EDUCATION AS A SOCIAL MULTIPLIERARA Asset Management Ltd (‘ARA’) and Lim Hoon Foundation (‘LHF’) have made a joint additional endowed donation of $1 million to SMU, boosting the current endowment to $4 million. This effectively increases the number of bond free scholarships from 8 to 12 students every year in perpetuity.

Established in 2009, the ARA-LHF Scholarship has benefitted a total of 28 SMU students, of which 18 have graduated and are actively engaged in community and industry. Expressing his gratitude, SMU President Prof Arnoud De Meyer reinforced the significance of such gifts, saying, “This gift further strengthens SMU’s ability to produce graduates with the breadth and depth of knowledge, who are articulate, ethically and socially responsible and capable of helping solve real world problems.”

GIFTS THAT GIVE BACKAs an organization with its own mission in education, the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation (Singapore) aspires to imbue education with love and gratitude. Since 2014, Tzu Chi has been providing financial assistance through bursaries to our undergraduates. Their support has benefitted 21 SMU students this year. Tzu Chi reviews every application and ensures that the foundation provides not only financial help, but also emotional and moral support for the students and families.

A key aspect of this partnership is that beneficiaries get to give back through volunteering their time with Tzu Chi; this commitment makes the beneficiaries aware of the impact they can make to the community, fosters character building and cultivates the desire to make a positive difference to other people.

CHAMPIONING SOCIAL MOBILITYThe Yangzheng Foundation has a long history of fostering, developing and improving education in Singapore, and has been championing social mobility by widening access to education.

Since 2010, the Yangzheng Foundation Bursary has been supporting financially needy students and the Foundation has generously pledged an additional support of $500,000 to top up the Foundation’s existing bursary with SMU.

A DRIVING PASSION FOR EDUCATIONWith a firm belief in creating equal opportunities for the less privileged and a passion for education, Mr Karsono Kwee, entrepreneur and founder of Eurokars, has gifted $250,000 to SMU. As of 2017, the gift has formed the basis for the Eurokars Group Endowed Scholarship and will benefit 1 scholar annually in perpetuity.

INVESTING IN FEMALE ENTREPRENEURSHIPThe Dr Doreen Tan Endowed Entrepreneurship Scholarship was set up to inspire and support female students who have displayed entrepreneurial spirit. A successful entrepreneur, Dr Tan wants this scholarship to reinforce women’s ability to lead in business circles, and the need for women to adopt leadership roles in society and industry. The $250,000 gift paves the way for female undergraduates to pursue entrepreneurship, creating opportunities for women, and diversity in our society.

ENCOURAGING OVERSEAS EXPOSUREThrough an endowed contribution of $400,000, the Singapore International Chamber of Commerce (SICC) has further strengthened its International Exchange Scholarship, creating new opportunities for undergraduate students to experience a semester of study per academic year at an overseas university. The contribution moves SMU closer to its goal of ensuring 100% of its students benefit from an overseas experience, widening the impact of global exposure and creating exciting new experiences for the University.

A CULTURE OF ALUMNI GENEROSITYAlvin Poh and fellow SMU alumni made two significant gifts of $250,000 each that will be going to endow the support of scholarships for financially needy students.

Alvin Poh graduated from the School of Information Systems in 2010 and is the Chief Executive Officer of Vodien Internet Solutions Pte Ltd. He believes firmly that education is the foundation for sustainable, wide-spread social impact. SMU has been a place of great personal growth for Alvin, and gave him the ability to develop as a person. Through this scholarship, Alvin hopes to enable more students to experience the opportunities that SMU can provide, and to inspire philanthropy and encourage more social responsibility.

A VIBRANT LEARNING ENVIRONMENTMore than just cutting-edge educational and research facilities, the SMU campus is alive with culture. The campus grounds are increasingly marked with art pieces that reflect the creativity, imagination and expressive nature of our people and programmes.

The “97.5° Arc x 8” by Bernar Venet sculpture employs mathematical manipulation of industrial materials to explore the unique interconnected-ness between nature, humanity and the universe.

Craig Martin’s sculpture, “Bright Ideas”, transforms the way we perceive everyday objects and acts as a catalyst for self-reflection, inspiring our community to reframe issues and interrogate the way they think about the issues and environments around us in different ways.

These two sculptures are generously donated by Dato’ Kho Hui Meng.

TANGIBLE AND MULTI-FACETED IMPACT TO INDUSTRY The $3 million endowed gift by Mapletree Investments, together with 1:1 government matching, has created a $6 million fund, allowing SMU to create a unique and innovative real estate programme — the Mapletree Real Estate Programme.

This multi-faceted partnership is a sector first and will catalyse the development of research insights whilst supporting SMU as we nurture talent in a rapidly growing real estate investment sector.

This gift and partnership will allow SMU to establish the following: a Mapletree Professorship in Real Estate; Mapletree Awards for talented students; Mapletree Real Estate Business Study Trip Grant that supports overseas field trips and enhances students’ experiential learning; and Mapletree Speaker Events to engage the industry and the broader community in real estate-related topics.

REGIONAL IMPACT TO ENHANCE INTERNATIONAL RELEVANCEAs one of the building blocks for Vision 2025, new International Advisory Councils have or are being set up in Myanmar, Philippines, Vietnam, China, Thailand and Indonesia. These Councils will help to establish, strengthen and deepen SMU’s collaboration and engagement with the government, academic, business communities and overseas alumni in these key South-east Asian countries and China.

These Councils create important pathways for SMU to engage with the region, to learn from and develop new knowledge for industries and communities and to further establish our position as an internationally-recognised, premier education institute in Singapore.

YOUNG LEADERS FOR A BETTER FUTUREFocusing on societal issues, social identity and the environment, the Singapore Summit Young Societal Leaders Programme was developed and launched in 2017.

This summit will ensure that corporate leaders have an opportunity to engage with and hear from Singapore’s bright young leaders on the roles they see themselves playing in shaping the future of society. It creates important multigenerational conversations on the global societal issues that matter and establishes a network for our future leaders.

Made possible by Temasek Foundation Connects through the S Rajaratnam Endowment and SMU’s Institute for Societal Leadership, this initiative injects new perspectives into the Singapore Summit, by including societal perspectives to currently discussed areas such as business, economic, finance, and geopolitical issues.

By encouraging our youth to consider and contemplate the roles of responsible leadership in society, we strengthen our communities and renew hope in our future.

REVITALISING THE RETAIL SCENE IN SINGAPORE AND BEYONDSMU’s launch of the Retail Centre of Excellence will focus on generating and disseminating actionable knowledge for retailers in Singapore, Asia and beyond. A joint initiative between SMU, SPRING and Economic Development Board, this timely initiative seeks to enhance the capabilities of both brick and mortar and online retailers through tools, solutions, insights and partnerships — to advance Singapore as an Asia Pacific Retail Hub.

The Retail Centre of Excellence is dedicated to tackling industry challenges and helping retailers raise both productivity and innovation levels through close collaboration with industry partners. Helmed by SMU Professor of Marketing, Kapil R. Tuli, the Centre’s ties with the retail industry are highlighted through its group of founding members — the first being DFS Ventures. The other members include Microsoft, Harvey Norman, IKEA, Popular Holdings, Decathlon and Tiffany and Co.

LAW AND THE RISE OF ECOMMERCEAs part of a partnership with Dentons Rodyk and Denton LLP, SMU has established an important forum for thought leaders to share and discuss ideas and views that directly impact on Asia’s legal, business, cultural and economic landscape. The 2017 inaugural Dentons Rodyk Dialogue focused on the rapid growth of eCommerce and the legal implications that will be a part of defining this growth for the future.

The Dialogue brought leading authorities together to discuss, debate and challenge current thinking on the rise of eCommerce, including Dr. Janil Puthucheary, Senior Minister of State, Ministry of Commu-nications and Information & Ministry of Education, Mr Philip Jeyaretnam SC, Regional CEO, Dentons Rodyk, Mr Maximilian Bittner, CEO, Lazada Group, and Mr Gilbert Leong, Senior Partner, Intellectual Property and Technology, Dentons Rodyk.

THE FUTURE OF LAWForward-looking partners such as international law firm Osborne Clarke are working with SMU to discuss, debate and address important issues including the impact, effects and considerations that technology such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and the internet of things will have on the field of Law.

The SMU School of Law, through the Centre for Cross-Border Commercial Law in Asia, together with Osborne Clarke, hosted the inaugural Future of Law Conference in October 2017. The conference provided thought-provoking insights and perspectives through speeches and a panel discussion with leading thinkers, such as — Mr Simon Beswick, International CEO of Osborne Clarke; Mr Ng How Yue, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Law; Prof Ian Kerr, University of Ottawa; Ms Jacqueline Poh, Chief Executive, Govtech, Singapore; and Asst Prof Eliza Mik, and SMU School of Law.

IN HONOUR OF THE LATE VETERAN CRIMINAL LAWYER, SUBHAS ANANDANThe Subhas Anandan Legacy Fund was announced in November 2017 with over $120,000 raised in honour of the late Subhas Anandan, a well-respected veteran criminal lawyer. The majority of this fund will go towards the SMU Criminal Law Club, allowing it to pursue and organise meaningful events on criminal justice related issues including the Criminal Justice Conference. The remainder of the fund will be allocated towards the SMU Law Outreach Club for the pursuit of meaningful community outreach projects.

In addition, the money raised also acts as a bursary valued at $5,000, which will support needy students beginning 2018.

INSTILLING A SENSE OF SOCIAL JUSTICELaunching SMU’s Pro Bono Centre’s new premise was made all the more significant through a $300,000 gift by the RHT Rajan Menon Foundation, which will support the activities of the Centre over the course of the next 5 years. Headed by SMU Associate Prof Rathna N Koman, the SMU Pro Bono Centre has been instrumental in inculcating a Pro Bono culture in SMU, and in sensitising students to issues around social justice.

Collectively this gift provides more than just financial support, but also real-world opportunities to help the underprivileged and unrepresented group of individuals benefit greatly from the Centre’s activities.

PASSION AND ACCESS TO TECHNOLOGY FOR THE FUTUREProject HeartCode is an innovative and engaging platform founded by Ellipsis (SMU Information Systems Society) in collaboration with SMU Devera. Made possible by the generous support of the Lee Foundation and Mr Ng Kai Wa, this project allows for underprivileged youths to be given an equal opportunity to learn about programming and computer science concepts.

Piloted with 17 beneficiary youths from Bukit Panjang Government High, Project HeartCode aims to teach youths fundamental programming skills and ignite an interest in the growing technological field.

Volunteers form the backbone of the project — acting as both teachers and mentors to underprivileged students. These young SMU volunteers are cultivating interests and skillsets that will be instrumental to creating a Smart Nation; but more than that, they are reinforcing the importance of giving back to society and creating meaningful impact for the future.

Throughout Project HeartCode, I have received more than I could give. From my fellow mentors and mentees, I have learnt about tenacity, determination, creativity and much more.
