"Seneca Falls" Quick Change Lathes are macle inthree sizes, rating 12", I4't aud 16" swing. The design-ing ancl perfecting of these new lathes covers a lougperiod of exhaustive experimental preparation, carefulstucly and rigid test of valious special and unique features.

Quick change gears have 48 combinations instantlyavailable. Reverse deviee in headstock convenientlyoperated frorn apron, controls lead-screw, cross and longi-tudinal feeds. Automatic stop for carriage in either direc-tion, when actuated by friction or screw feeds. Auto-matic safety device in apron prevents engaging opposingfeeds. Cone has 4 steps,of large diameters, for wide belt; back gears and twofolward speecls from countershaft give 16 spindle speeds.The cone is finished inside and outside, perfectly balanced,is locked to head-gear by push-pin and may be secureclot' t'eleased instantly, without using wrench.

Tailstock-Curved, off-set pattern, rnassive, with longbearing on becl and base, is clarnped to bed by bolts ex-tencling to the top in convenient position for wrench.Has side adjustment for turning taper. The spindle is oflarge diameter with long movement.

Carriage-Is wide and heavy, has fulllength, solidbearings on V ways, is securely gibbed front ancl rear, anew (patented) bincling device, for securing plain andcornpound rests to cross slide, facilitates adjustments anclchanging rests, and by ornitting the usual slots for binderbolts, the closs slicle is not weakened. The cross slide isgraduatecl 180 degrees fol acljusting compound rest. "T"slots are plovicled for clarnping wolk to carriage.

for taper attachrnent, which can be affixed at any time.The cross-feecl sclew has collar graduated to read inthousandths of an inch. The collar can be readily setto any position and rnay also be used in connection withthe Microrneter Cross-Feecl Stop. (See next paragraph).

Micrometer Cross-Feed Stop-(Patentecl). Is adevice, which gives a positive stop for hand feed, capableof cutting a given clepth to a certainty. It has a micro-meter acljustment with graduations reading .00025 inch.The graduations are about 3/32 inch apart and minuteadjustments are easily rnade.

1'his stop is invaluable for all kinds of outside and in-side worh; it saves time because it eliminates guessing atthe clepth of cut; it saves making several trial cuts to ob-tain a desired dirnension; it saves stopping lathe toealiper work; it insures uniformity in making duplicatepalts. The depth of cut cannot be variecl by crowdingthe tool. The stop is positive and may be usecl iu con-nection with taper attachment.

bility of engaging opposing feeds; one feed automaticallydisengages when another is thrown in. Wlien cuttingscrews the feed gearing is disengagecl and the longitu-dinal hand wheel does not revolve as the carriage travels.

Powerful friction cross ancl longitudinal feeds arethrown in and out of contact by single hand knob onapron which operates a double friction clutch (pateuted)in connection with worm gear; turn knob to right forlongitudinal feed and to left for cross-feed. The wormgear is actuated by worm on lead-scr:ew, which is splinecland acts as feed rod, without any wear on threadsexcept when actually cutting screws. An oil pocket anddrip pan provides constant and positive lubricationfor worm and worm gear. The split nut for lead-screwis accurately fitted to guides and firrnly held by gib straps.

Cross and longitudinal feeds and lead-scr.ew are re-versed by lever mounted on sicle of apron; this works inconnection with automatic stop for. longitudinal feed andlead-screw, when feeding either to right or left. (Seefollowing paragraphs.)

Reversing Device-(Patented), for carriage is oper-ated by lever mounted on sicle of apron, which controlsthe travel of carriage and cross slide, when feeding ineither direction, ol throws the feecl gearing entirely outof contact. This reversing clevice also controls thelead-screw. The mechanism consists of a set of spurgears and clutch in headstock operated through lever.connected by reversing rocl to hand lever on apron.

This clevice is very convenient and greatly recluces thetime required to turn out a piece of work in a standardengine lathe and cloes away with reverse belt on counter-shaft, thereby permitting two folwald speecls of counter'-shaft.

Automatic Carriage Stop-(Patented), operates

either right or left and may be used when cutting screws

as well as for longitudinal feed. Easily set and adjusted,

and will be found invaluable when working to a shoulder

or rnaking duplicate parts. It is very accurate and willstop the carriage in the same place every time.

Lead-Screw-Is made from special high carbon lead-

screw steel, is . cut on special lathe with master screw,

which is frequently tested to insure accuracy.

Bed-Is extremely broad, deep ancl heavy, thoroughly

braced by cross webs and is correctly proportionecl

throughout. The ends are cut-under to shorten leg ltase

ancl increase stability.

Detached Parts-Each lathe is furnishecl with plain

and compound rests, center rest, follower rest, large ancl

The Gealecl-Head Single Pulley Dlive Lathe, thloughits plonpt, direct, convenient action, offers lalge oppor'-tunity for increasecl efficiency and production; spincllespeed changes are under quick, easy contlol of three con-veniently locatecl hancl levers operating five positiveclutches, engaging at low speeds, and one powerful fric-tion clutch on spindle for high speeds.

The mechanisrn is enclosed in a box type of heaclstock,lll geals ale accurately cut frorn steel blanks, r'un quietlyaucl rnake llo rrore noise than a, cone driven lathe. Anoil purnp is used for forcecl feed oiling systern and insuresaurple lubrication at all tirnes when pulley is in motion.

This geared head can be easily changecl to a directconnectecl rnotol ch'ive (see pages 20-21) by changingthe drive pulley, which is geared up for motor, andrnounting rnotor on the top, which is planed so thatruotor rnay be mounted at any tirne. All regular attach-rnents except relieving attachrnent can be usecl with thegearecl heacl lathe.

direct connected Motor Drive for 12", 14" ancl L6"Seneca Falls Quick Change Lathes. It is adaptable to allvarying conditions of different users. The equiprnent in-cludes our Geared Heaclstoch, (see pages 18-19), havingeight mechanical changes of spindle speeds in geometricalprogression.

The motol is mounted on top of headstock ancl is con-nected to drive shaft pulley by wicle belt which rnay be al-ways kept at proper tension by easily adjusted belt tiglit-euer. By this method sufficient power may be trans-rnitted to drive lathe to the full capacity that work or toolwill endure, and will prevent damage to both lathe andrnotor that is sometimes chargeable to less flexible gearor chain clrive connections.

Any make of motor for clirect or altelnating current,either constant or valiable speed, rnay be used. With a

constant speed motor, preferably running between 1100and 1200 R.P.M., eight spindle speeds are available, ifmore spindle speeds are desired, variable speed rnotorrnay be used to good advantage. A reversible motor isnot required for thread cutting, etc., as carriage reversemechanism is operated by hand lever on apron.

of relief, fi'om 0 to I inch, the arnount is indicatecl by

graduations on adjusting knob.

The driving mechanism is attached to the bed in front

of headstock and receives power frorn the head-gear.

The number of strokes per revolution of wolk is regu-

latecl by change geals. A set of gezlls is fulnished giving

22 variatiorn, inclutling nll rrurnbels fi'orn 2 to 16 and

cven nurnbels fi'om 18 to 30.

This relieving attachment may be used in connection

with the taper attachment ancl micrometer cross-feecl

stop, also with powel closs and longitudinal feeds, but

cannot be usecl with gealed head. Special cams may be

usecl for turning elliptical ancl other irregular shapes.

The attachment is so easily and quickly disconnectecl,

that it cloes not interfere with the regular operation of

tlie lathe; the tool slide is removed by loosening bincling

screw and pulling out splined shaft flom driving mechan-

ism, and throwing the driving geal out of contact with

head-gear.

Headstock. Web pattern, hollow spindle made from60-65 carbon crucible steel, accurately ground to size,revolving in ample hand-scraped ring-oiling bearings,nose is threaded part way only to facilitate changingchucks and face plates without damaging threads andto insure perfect fit.

All spindles have large hole suitable for draw-inchuck. Cone is finished inside and outside, perfectlybalanced for high speeds, is locked to head-gear by im-proved push-pin and may be secured or released in-stantly without using wrench, all gears are fully guarded.

l'hese lathes have self-oiling ancl clust-pioof bearings,combination screw and lever motion, convenient lockinglevers on hand-rest and tailstock (attached and alwaysin place, no wrench required) and other valuable fea-tures. This description also covers 10" Seneca FallsWood-Turning Lathe (see cut on page 56) except thatWood-Turning Lathe has screw feed only for tail spindle.

They are finishecl in a thorough manner, all cylindricalsulfaces ale grouncl and sliclirrg surfaces hand-scraped.

Headstock. Web pattern, strong and solid. Hol-low spindle made from 60-65 carbon crucible steel, anclaccurately ground, runs in large reliable ring-oiling anddust-proof hand-scraped bearings. The cone-pulley hasfour steps, is turned true inside and outside, and is inpelfect balance for high speeds.

Tailstock. Curved or cut-undel patteln, spindle hasimproved loclcing device, and combination screw andlcver feeds. To change from screw to lever motion onlynecessary to give knurled collar a quarter turn, releas-ing spinclle sleeve and bring hand-lever (always at-tached) to place. The tailstock has long bearing onways ancl is firmly lockecl to bed by a convenient lever,(attached ancl always in place, no wrench required).

Bed is bloacl, deep and being thoroughly bracecl bycross webs is very stiff and ligid. Front way is flat anclback way is V-shape (same as inside ways on our screw-cutting engine lathes). A convenient shelf is securedto back of bed fol reception of tools, etc.

Countershaft has self-oiling and self-aligning shaftbearings, four step cone ancl tight and loose pulleys self-closing oil cup on loose pulley (can furnish patent fric-tion clutch pulleys in place of tight and loose pulleys atan aclditional price, when clesired). Improvecl l eltshifter operatecl by pull cord, this feature is not shownin cut on page 51.

Foot-Power. Our patentecl foot-motion proclucesgreater power with less fatigue than any other kincl inuse; it consists of double treadles with walking motion.The treadles are adjustable and work alternately, beingconnected at opposite encls of driving wheel shaft, pro-ducing strong, positive and continuous pov/er. Can bestartecl or stoppecl instantly ancl rnay be opelated withboth feet, (sitting), or one foot, (stancling), as desired.
