Flu Clinics
Stowhealth is planning its flu campaign and we would like you to make the most of this opportunity if you are one of our eligible patients. If
you are not eligible there will be competitively priced private flu vaccinations available. To see if you are eligible please visit our
website www.stowhealth.com
Influenza is an unpleasant viral illness that cannot be treated with antibiotics. The vaccination really does make a difference and the more of us within the community who are vaccinated, the less likely we are to be troubled by the unpleasant symptoms associated with this illness. If you catch influenza you can expect to feel really unwell for 5-7 days with several weeks of fatigue. Severe complications are rare,
but they still do occur.
The vaccines are very safe and the Stowhealth Team would strongly encourage you to come to our walk-in clinics on Saturday 5 October, Saturday 19 October and Saturday 9 November (no appointment is
required). These clinics will run from 8.30 am to 12.30 pm.
All children aged 2 and 3 are now eligible, but will require an appointment, as will children aged between 6 months and 13 years
old who are in the “At Risk” group.
Please telephone 01449 776000 to make an appointment.
Further details can be found on our website: www.stowhealth.com

From Rectory Bungalow: October
The good summer we all enjoyed disappeared into a seasonal autumn almost overnight and I received my first Christmas communication from an ever hopeful charity on 5 September. As I write Macmillan have enjoyed one successful Coffee Morning at Finborough raising over £320, others will follow at Greenacres, Harleston after the Primary School’s Harvest Service and in Buxhall Village Hall. We are a generous nation who live in a green, pleasant and kindly land. Out of our plenty and thankfulness flows a concern for others not so fortunate. Some concentrate overmuch on their own treasure as if it will give them happiness and contentment. Conventional wisdom shows that it does not – but leads to a closing of
minds and narrowness of life in many cases.
Arising from this the five Harvest Festivals will probably see greater attendance and certainly more interest than Easter. It seems clear by his words and actions that Pope Francis is refocusing the Christian message for this generation through his actions. ‘By their fruits shall you know them’ says Jesus in Matthew 7.16 and he was concerned with faith and action. It is undoubtedly true that many see action rather than fine and complex words and theories more attractive and understandable –hence possibly greater interest in Harvest Festival than Easter. Too early really to mention Easter but that does actually reveal how a generous God sent Jesus his son to show what ultimate generosity really is. Easter is the root of our faith – but Harvest Festival seems to celebrate the outworking of it
for many.
We will all be sharing something of our Harvest offerings with others and the Food Bank collection mentioned last month is having an excellent start in the villages. This is a rich time – God loves a cheerful giver – it is good
for you!
Churchyards On behalf of all the residents of all our villages I would like to thank those who work so hard to maintain the churchyards on a voluntary basis. Some are kept very neatly in the traditional way – others differently with greater emphasis on wildlife and some like Onehouse nicely in between. More volunteers are always sought and if you can help, however little, please
phone David on 01449 737991.

Buxhall Women’s Institute
Members turned up to the August Meeting expecting to hear about 'The Life and Times of the Cooking Canon'. It was with great disappointment that due to unforeseen circumstances the 'Cooking Canon' was nowhere to be seen. We were sorry
that this didn't take place but realise that things happen in life that are unavoidable and so we were lucky at short notice to get a speaker to come and talk to us about a subject that whether we like it or not, can affect any of us at any time...Alzheimer's. Although this could be thought of as a bit of a harrowing subject, our speaker injected appropriate humour into the talk. Susan Vincent, the Campaigner for Suffolk, briefly spoke about her mum who suffered with Alzheimer's and pointed out that at the time of her mother being diagnosed with this condition she wasn't aware of any support group and never having dealt with it before, was not sure how to handle her mum's progression of the disease (a poignant note perhaps - Susan's mother was herself a WI member of the Stowupland branch and she felt her mother would be 'tickled pink' if she could see her daughter giving a talk at a WI meeting). Our speaker Susan went on to inform us of the communities that had successfully started up 'Dementia Friends' in their area - a group of volunteers that in some way or other were offering a small part of their time to dementia sufferers. As always, with such a serious topic, there were times of humour with all of us seeing the funny side of scenarios that were put before us. The talk ended on a very positive note with treatment advancing all the time, life can be made a lot easier
for sufferer and carer alike if early diagnosis is sought.
On a lighter note, several of our members will be strolling along the front at Southwold this weekend. Our annual trip is upon us - as always combined with a play in Southwold's Theatre. This year's title is 'Dick Barton - Secret of the Pharaoh's Tomb' - if other years are anything to
go by, there will be plenty of laughs in store for all.
Our August Meeting concluded with thanks to the speaker for stepping in at such short notice, singing of 'The Queen' and farewell till the next meeting which will be the third Wednesday of the month at Buxhall Village Hall, 7 for 7.30 pm. Ladies! feel free to pop in and see what we
are all about.

Great Finborough and District Garden Club
This summer must rank as one of the best for some years, but, and as gardeners there always has to be a” but”, not enough rain has fallen to stop the daily watering to prevent those vulnerable specimens drying out. Also the time has come to start the autumn tidy up of the beds,
feed those specimens remaining and to plan the spring bulb displays.
The September meeting was a bit unusual, for the first time in Garden Club history the speaker failed to turn up so we had a cup of tea and decided what to do. With typical Garden Club resourcefulness two members came forward and offered to step in so we had two talks. The first, “Water Gardens of the Kashmer”, describing some of his adven-tures in India and the fascinating gardens on islands created on lakes which provided both homes and garden produce for the occupants. The second, “My Life with Flowers”, describing her ambition as a child at school to become a florist and the amazing things she had done and
people she had met as proprietor of florist shops in and around London.
I’m sure all Members would like to join me in extending our real appreciation and thanks to Vicki and Ken for stepping in and providing
two such interesting and entertaining talks.
Bird seed sales have continued to flourish and we have sold almost 14 ton of seed in the last year. We do make a small profit and this is used to support local causes. We have made donations to the Parish Council towards the cost of spring bulb planting, refurbishment of the Parish Marquee and the provision of the Communal Shed on the allotment site, St Andrew’s Church to cover the hire cost of their brown bins, the Allotment Association for materials to install their new onsite water tap, fit out the new shed and fill in the ditch to provide the new footpath, the WI for their proposed bulb planting scheme in Buxhall, and finally, a new wall mounted projector screen for Pettiward hall. So thank you all for
your support.
Our next meeting will be on 10 October at the usual time of 7.30 pm in the Upper Room of the Pettiward Hall and will see the return of Ben Potterton from Blacksmith’s Cottage Nursery, who will be speaking on the subject of ‘Chickens!!’ If previous visits by Ben are any guide it will
be an entertaining and informative visit not to be missed.
Finally, if you are interested in joining the garden club or would like to join us for any event you will be very welcome. Membership is only £12.50 per household per year or £2.00 for an individual session. For further information contact either John Davey on 674401 or [email protected] or Judith Cameron on 672978 or

WILD BIRD SEED
The next order will be placed on 11 October and will be available for collection from Abbey Farm Cottage, Finborough by Wednesday 16 October. If you would like to place an order please let me have your requirements with a cheque to “Great Finborough Garden Club”; it is also essential I have your telephone number so that you can be advised when the seed is ready for collection. Orders may be posted or dropped off at Abbey Farm Cottage, IP14 3AU, or, if more convenient, to 1 Valley Lane or 8 High Road and must be
received by Thursday 10 October. The next seed order will be in December.
As you are aware, I buy so much seed that I can trade at wholesale prices which have dropped, so 60% of the seeds offered this month are “cheeper”. Now you don’t hear of that very often nowadays do you?! We also have three new seeds available, WBM High Energy, WBM Robin & Songbird (which is a ground feed mix) and Fancy Poultry Mix. If you would like more information
about these please phone 674401. Thank you, John Davey

Cycle thefts Police are urging Suffolk's cyclists to secure their bike at all times after a
spate of pedal cycle thefts across the county.
Don’t leave bikes unlocked if you leave them unattended – even in your own garden. Police recommend using a heavy duty bike lock, similar to a D-lock, and locking your bike to an immovable object - a proper bike rack,
ground anchor or robust street furniture.
In the UK a bicycle is stolen approximately every minute of the day, perhaps worsened due to the increasing popularity of expensive models,
which in turn can be sold far too easily via online auctions.
In many of the cycle thefts reported to the police the owner was unable to give any details of the cycle's make or frame / serial number. If you own a cycle be sure to register your bicycles frame number along with any pictures you have on Immobilise at www.immobilise.com, the world's largest FREE register of possession ownership details supported by all UK Police forces, the Greater London Authority, and the Mobile Phone Industry. This site also has more tips on cycle security and how to find frame
numbers.
Supermarket carpark distraction thefts Police are warning shoppers to be vigilant following two incidents in supermarket car parks where shoppers were distracted and their bank cards stolen. On Saturday 31st August two women followed a shopper from the cigarette kiosk of a supermarket in Ipswich. When they reached the car park one of them handed the victim a £10 note which they claimed she had dropped. The victim handed back the note saying it didn’t belong to her and walked away. A short time later she realised that a bank card had been stolen. A similar incident was then reported just before 12.30pm
Saturday at Felixstowe Road, Ipswich.
Please be aware of who is around you at busy supermarket checkouts, cover the pad when inputting your pin number and secure your card, purse or wallet before moving away from the till. If you are at all suspicious of someone standing near to the checkout area alert a member of staff and if someone distracts you as you return to your vehicle ask them to wait until you have finished putting your items away and locked your car. The first suspect is described as southern European in appearance, 20-30-years-old, 5ft 5” tall, average build with dark curly shoulder length hair, the second woman is described as white, with blonde hair, taller than the first and was wearing gold coloured trousers. If you have any information about these incidents or recognise the description of the two women please contact
Suffolk Police on 101 reference IW/13/3314.

ministrator, England & Wales)

Publication advertising scam Suffolk Police are warning businesses and members of the public to be aware of a scam currently operating in the county. Police have been informed that business owners have been telephoned by individuals claiming to be working on behalf of Suffolk Police and offering advertising
space in a publication about safety for young people.
Suffolk Police would like to confirm that they do not sell advertising space or request donations in this manner. Anyone purporting to be calling for this purpose is not genuine and members of the public receiving such calls should hang up immediately. If you are approached details can be forwarded online to www.actionfraud.police.uk or by phone to
03001232040.
Doorstep chainsaw sellers hit Suffolk A warning from Trading Standards and the Police has been issued after several reports of traders selling chainsaws door to door in Suffolk. Door-step callers may claim that their items are genuine and safe, but officers are warning residents not to part with their money, as the products may not have had any safety checks performed on them or come with any
instruction manuals or advice.
Anyone who has been offered goods door to door is advised to consider
the following:
Who are you buying from? Do they have paperwork? Are they
legitimate?
Think twice before you buy and if you are made to feel under
pressure to make a purchase, have the confidence to say no.
Talk to someone you trust for a second opinion.
If you spend more than £35 with a trader on the doorstep, you have seven days in which to cancel. The trader should give a notice detailing these rights. If no such cancellation notice is given then an offence may have
been committed.
Officers are currently trying to track down the original source of some of the chainsaws being sold, and are warning potential consumers to stick to trusted suppliers and known outlets. If residents have any concerns about products they have purchased on their doorstep, advice is on hand from Citizens Advice Consumer Service on 08454 040506. Vital information can then be passed on to Trading Standards to help stop rogue traders and
work towards creating a Rogue Free Suffolk.

It was really pleasing to see almost a full coach on our final outing of the year. We had picked up around the villages and finished up with a day trip to Southwold. On an excellent day weather-wise, it was a pleasure to walk around, eat and sit in the sun at one of Suffolk’s best seaside towns. It was also nice to see Katie Ellis with us again as she works so hard on these outings. It is always difficult to find something different to do or go, so if you have any ideas out there please let Katie or Keith
know.
Our October meeting is Bring, Buy and Bingo on Thursday 3 October at 2.00 pm in Buxhall Village Hall. This is the only fund-raising event we have during the year so please support it if you can. Two more meetings and it will be our Christmas lunch, doesn’t time fly by when you’re enjoy-
ing yourselves?

Alert
On a number of occasions since mid September livestock have been let out from fields in Buxhall. Different farmers have been targeted, sheep and cattle. Sheep at Cockerels Hall were found in Rattlesden and cattle from Mill Road caused extensive damage to neighbouring gardens. This is clearly a deliberate act as gates have been left wide open and fencing cut. Please be vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police
immediately.

Cedarwood Veterinary Practice
Vets urge owners to check vaccine records and announce amnesty
to protect dogs after two cases of deadly disease
Vets at Cedarwood Veterinary Practice are raising awareness of the importance of pet vaccination for dogs following two separate cases of suspected Parvovirus which resulted, in one case, in the death of a local unvaccinated puppy and in the other, the death of an unvaccinated bitch and half of her unvaccinated litter. Cases have also been reported in the last month in Great Yarmouth & Felixstowe, the latter resulting in the cancellation of the Landguard Dog Day (according to EADT Friday,
September 6, 2013).
All dog owners are being urged to check their dogs’ vaccination programme is fully up to date. If they are unsure, they should contact their veterinary practice for advice. To help owners who may have fallen behind with their dog’s immunisation, Cedarwood have announced a vaccine amnesty for October, allowing them to restart at a very
favourable rate – full details are available by telephoning 01449 676966.
Vet Ross Kelly from the Practice explains, “Parvovirus can easily be spread either via dog faeces, direct dog to dog contact, or even brought into the household on shoes. When it affects unprotected dogs, young or old, it can be particularly unpleasant with continual severe vomiting and bloody diarrhoea and in many cases, despite the best veterinary care, the dog cannot be saved.” Ross continues, “ The distress to the dog, their owners and their vets is obvious.” Parvovirus appeared in the 1970s and killed a large number of dogs due to the lack of an available vaccine. However, since the development of vaccines, there are fewer outbreaks of the disease. The best way to avoid such diseases is for owners to have their dogs vaccinated against Parvo and the other key diseases and then to keep them up to date with regular booster vaccinations. Ross confirms, “The message needs to get through to all owners, as unfortunately there are still a large number of dogs which have never been vaccinated or whose vaccinations have lapsed and this is why the outbreaks occur.” He continues, “It is not just Parvo, we are one of the first practices in the country to have recently introduced the latest vaccine against Leptospirosis (better known as Weil’s Disease), another disease which is life threatening for dogs and also humans. It is spread by contact with rats’ urine, whether directly, or more likely when dogs play in or drink water in streams or ponds. Vaccination is only part of the preventive health picture, if dogs are missing vaccination boosters they are also losing out on the opportunity for general health checks. As vets we are trained to help sick and injured animals but preventive care has to be the best care and regular vaccinations and health checks are by far the best way an owner can actively help their dog’s long term health.”
concludes Ross.

It was a lovely sunny day for our Produce Show held on 31 August, and it was equally lovely inside the Village Hall, where 51 adult entrants had produced between them a superb collection of vegetables, fruit, flowers, floral art, preserves, cookery, wine, crafts and photography. There was also a welcome increase in the children’s section. Overall, the quality of produce in all sections was excellent. The cookery judge was particularly
pleased with the quantity and quality of the cookery over last year.
The warm weather must have encouraged people, many of them strangers, to give us a visit. There were the usual sideshows, and the W.I. were kept on their toes serving tea and cakes. All the sideshows, except the tombola and £1 in-the-bucket, raised more than last year. A total profit of £496.17 was made. This included a record £123.17 raised
by the entertaining auction of produce and cakes.
We would like to thank all those who helped in any way: those who made all the preparations for the show; those who entered their produce; those who gave it for auction; sponsors, including the ploughman’s lunches for the judges, stewards and helpers; the W.I. for refreshments; bake makers for the Win-a-bake; those who gave raffle and tombola prizes; those who helped on the sideshows; those who spent their money, and last but not least, all
those who helped clear up afterwards!
Thank you.

News from your councillor – John Matthissen
A Stowmarket Cycle Map has just been published, and is available from the Library, Town Council, rail station, Tourist information, Hillside Community
Centre and Barton’s Bikes.
The final stage of appointing staff to new posts has been thrown into turmoil by a sudden management decision to “pause” the interviews and appoint-ments and there are 70 vacancies unfilled. All managers have been asked to review how business critical each vacancy is, but we have made clear that big gaps need filling urgently. Staff morale has been hit hard by this
situation.
The Mid Suffolk Executive approved the Chilton Leys Development Brief for public consultation, which will be for 6 weeks. I have created a conveniently short link to the document - http://tinyurl.com/Chilton-Leys We have
been warned that Taylor Wimpey may submit their phase 1 application be-
fore the Brief has been adopted.
The Brief excludes all of the Chilton Fields sports land owned by MSDC, and the Executive has confirmed this. This does not protect the fields for all
time, but the cost/benefit figures indicate against development.

Lorry Watch Scheme Lorry Watch is an initiative run by Suffolk Trading Standards which empowers residents to prevent goods vehicles from breaching weight
restrictions in their community.
The Lorry Watch scheme is intended to prevent environmental damage to some of Suffolk’s most delicate settlements and to empower
residents to stop the damage HGVs can cause to their communities.
If you feel your parish is blighted by illegal or inappropriate movement of goods vehicles then consider becoming a Lorry watch Co-ordinator
or Observer.

Buxhall & Shelland Church Fête – The Results
The final figures are now available and we are delighted to announce that the Fête held this year on Saturday 3 August made £5,658.34, just short of £1,000 up on last year. All this money has been allocated to St Mary’s and King Charles the Martyr church
funds.
In addition, we sold twice as many tickets as last year for the evening Hog Roast & Barn Dance. With costs covered by generous sponsorship, and by donations of food and cooking skills, the
evening event also made a significant profit of £1,015.95.
Many, many thanks to all for your support!

An Italian influence inspires the menu this year:
Antipasti with foccocia, followed by a choice of delicious dishes. You can choose from salmon, pork with beans and olives, vegetable cannelloni, or chicken with pesto – all served with salad leaves and crusty bread. We thought an ‘intercourse’ drop of limoncello would go down well next and then lots of scrumptious Italian desserts to choose from, all followed by tea or coffee with some
biscotti.
You can buy your tickets individually or for a whole table of 8. Ring Irene to reserve your tickets 01449 616865 or e-mail

joy ourselves, so book early to avoid being disappointed!

Hello everyone…
I am pleased to say that no crimes have been reported in the village
over the last month.
General information… Horsewatch: Occasionally Suffolk police receive reports from horse owners that their horses’ manes/ tails have been cut or plaits woven in. People consider these to be markers for theft but this has never been substantiated. However this thought causes concern for horse owners. If the marking is a sign of possible theft then we would have an increase in horse thefts but this is not the case. This does not mean horse owners should drop their guard. Always remain vigilant and continue to report any unusual activity concerning your horse, reporting the matter to the police and your local Horsewatch. It would be useful to take photographs of the cut hair (or plaits) with the horse in full
profile showing its mane or tail when discovered.
Sky card scam: Police are advising home owners to be aware of a cold callers scam involving refunds on Sky cards. Home owners are told their Sky card is due to expire soon with an overpayment on their account which needs to be refunded. Bank details are requested in order to issue the refund. No refunds are received and Sky has confirmed that they would never contact a customer asking for these
details.
