Area Deaths and Funerals Ida Mae Chasteen

"Mrs. Ida Mae Chasteen, 72, Rt. 3, Berea, died Sunday, August 19, at the Corbin Baptist Hospital.

She was a housewife and native of Garrard County and was a member of the Pentecos-tal Holiness Church.

Survivors are: her husband, Mr. John R. Chasteen of Rt. 3, Berea; three sons, Elmer and John Jr. of Rt. 3. Berea, and Paul Chasteen of West Virginia; two daughters, Dorthy Chas-teen and Bertha Ellen Chasteen, both of Rt. 3, Berea; six brot-hers, Jesse Pingleton, Roy Ping-leton, James Plngletoii- and George Pingleton, all of Berea, and Jack and Dewey Pingleton of Paint Lick; eight grandchild-ren and nine great grandchild-ren.

Funeral services were held

Tuesday, August 21 at the Dula and Scudder Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. A.F. At wood. Burial was in the Cartersville Cemetery.

Bill Cox Mr. Bill Cox, 58, of Mt.

Vernon, died suddenly Monday, August 27, of an apparent heart attack, at his home.

He was bornon May 12,1921 in Rockcastle County, the son of the late Ed and Annie Coffey Cox, and was a veteran of World Ware Two.

Survivors are: his wife, Mrs. Joyce Denney Cox of Mt. Vernon; three sons, Billy Ray, Charles Edward, and Brian Keith Cox all at home; two

slaughters, Cheryl Lynne Cox at home and Mrs. Ann Robinson of Germany; one brother, Albert Cox of Brodhead; three sisters.

Mrs. Daisy Holman of Bed-head, Mrs. Irene Dusenburg, and Mrs. Dordthy Chambers both of Indianapolis, Ind.; four grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, Aug. 29 at the Cox Funeral Home Chapel by Rev. Harvey Pensol. Burial was in the Piney Grove Cemetery.

Geo. Albert Dooley Mr. George Albert Dooley,

79, of Rt. 4, Mt. Vernon, died Friday, August 24, at the Rock-castle County Hospital.

He was bom in Rockcastle County on February 3, 1900, the son of the late Frank and Elorence Phillips Dooley and was a retired farmer.

He is survived by: his wife, Mrs. Jerline Dooley of Mt. Vernon; four sons, James Doo-ley of Pine Hill, Gieorge, Travis and Johnny Dooley, all of Mt. Vernon; three daughters, Inrs.

Com Silage Harvesting Time

The time to harvest com silage is near. The key to qual-ity silage will be determined by the stagfof maturity and moist-ure content at harvest. Silage . cut and stored right will mean more milk in the bulk tank this fall and winter.

Start chopping com when the kernels are mature-well dented and after a black layer has formed between the kernel and the cob. Watch the leaves; the best silage is made when the leaves are brown about one-half wa<- up the stalk. Good silage should contain about 65% moist-ure. If too wer, citff Silage wilf" usually seep from the silo and if too dry. packing and good fer-mentation can be a problem. Additionally, dry or wet silage may not be consumed as readily as normaLsilage.

Silage should be chopped at 1/8 to 3/8 in. length. This allows for good packing and for proper fermentation in the silo. Silage

^ can be stored in any structure which keeps out air and water, including bunkers, uprights, trenches, stacks, or plastic bags.

The four most important steps in making good silage are:

auoilahle. Evecgjeeh^ , are good plants to use but (hey ' must be selected carefully and correcetly located. There are several different kinds of ever-greens and they have different -prices. A person should not be misled into buying cheap plants, because in all probabil-ity they are not very good. A

few of the better kinds are always much better looking than many of the cheap ones. There Is nothing that makes a home look worse than to have evergreens that are not good looking.

Remember-it is possible to have a good planting of mixed plants-part evergreen and part deciduous or flowering shrubs. Also, there are the evergreens that have broad leaves just like the shrubs, and they can be mixed with the other plants. Each home should be studied to make sure of getting plants suited to it.
