While we are called to do our part in service and recruitment, we ultimately need to allow Gods love and power to work through us if our efforts are to be truly fruitful. That is why it is so important that everything we do begin with prayer – our meetings, social events, de- grees, service work, serving in an honor guard. Brother Knights: Thank you for entrusting me to serve as your State Deputy. As with all other positions in which I served the order, I only promise that I will do the best job that I am capable of. Despite all that I have learned through my 32 years as a Knight, there is always something new to learn about the order. While I have had many great mentors and I think I am as prepared as I can be for this position, I am quickly learning that there will be many challenges ahead. But I look forward to the experience of representing you and the Illinois State Council. Linda and I have met many friends during our journey and we look forward to meeting many more of you. At the District Deputy Organizational meeting in July, I introduced my theme, “Chosen To Go and Bear Fruit That Will Remain.” This comes from John 15:16, and it struck me when it was read at Mass a couple of years ago that this is exact-ly what we Knights are all about. We were chosen to spread the good news of Christ and the Knights of Columbus, and to perform charitable works that the world will remember and cherish. We were chosen to serve our parishes, com-munities, and our Brother Knights with a selfless vigor and determination to make the world a better place for now and tomorrow. Through our works, we also invite others to join our order and our crusade to make the world a better place for all. The new fraternal year provides us an opportunity to start fresh. I encourage all councils and their officers to look at their past performance and identify what might be done differently. Be honest with yourself and ask, “are we doing everything we can in the vision of Fr. McGivney?” I surmise that eve-ry council has room to improve, some more than others. Importantly, we must share our Order with others. Too many of our councils are happy and satisfied with the status quo. But things atrophy if we don't maintain them as time passes. If we don't change things with our bodies, our health suf-fers. If we don't maintain our home, it begins to fall apart. Such is the case with our councils. If we do the same thing year in and year out, it gets old and stale. If we don't find new, younger members and turn the leadership of the council over to them the council will wither and die. I challenge every council, officer, and member to appraise their current situation and seek ways to renew them-selves. For many of us, it's time to acknowledge that we've served well, but that it's time to pass the torch and watch the next generation lead us towards better days ahead. We might not like the new things they introduce, but our fathers and grandfathers weren't too keen on some of the “boss, neato, and far out” stuff we did either (you older guys will understand that last sentence)! Again, thank you for allowing me to serve as your State Deputy. I am proud to represent the great jurisdiction of Illinois and the Knights of Columbus. Fraternally

Dear Brother Knights and Families,

The new 2017-2018 Fraternal Year is fully under-way and our State Leadership has recently gathered in Springfield for the Mid-Summer DD/Organizational meeting to be enlightened, motivat-ed, and challenged for increasing membership, charities and program involvement. Our State Deputy Ted Stites’ motto for the coming year is “Chosen to Go and Bear Fruit that will Remain.” Recognizing that we are “chosen” in our work as Knights of Columbus to be involved and to accom-plish great tasks; what a wonderful way to begin each day by adding to our morning prayer “It’s a blest day to be a Knight of Columbus and to do great things in Your Name.”

All that we are called to be and all that we can ever hope to achieve depends on the Lord’s presence to us and His saving grace. As we open ourselves up more and more to that grace and presence, we will be amazed by what we are able to accomplish. But we must never forget, it is not us alone, but the Lord working through us that makes things happen.

As I write this letter, many in our State Family are preparing to travel to St. Louis for the Supreme Convention (August 1-3). These annual Supreme

gatherings of brother Knights and their families from all the Jurisdictions of our Order is always an uplifting and spirit-filled experience.

The Supreme program, “Building the Domestic Church – The Family Fully Alive” will continue this year with new programming ideas and materi-als that the councils can use and distribute. If your Council has not availed itself to this awesome pro-gram, you missed out this past year on some very special activities. But not all is lost, as you will have another opportunity to use the various materi-als to enhance your Council’s programming, chari-ties and membership growth. It is a wonderful family oriented program that exemplifies: “The family that prays and plays together, stays togeth-er.” If your Council has wisely used this program, you can begin again and expand on the activities and ideas with creative new planning. Then it will truly become "Fruit that Remains”.

Worthy Brothers All, I hope your summer is going well and your coun-cils are remaining active. At this time of the year please keep in mind, that in August you are re-quired to submit the Form 365, Service Program Personnel Report, as well as the semi-annual Coun-cil Audit, Form 1295. The Form 185 should have been already submitted with copies to the State of-fice and your D.D.; It is imperative that these forms be completed and submitted on time. Every council should have received their council’s copy of the Fraternal Leader Success Planner from the Supreme Office. I highly encourage every council to utilize this planner to its fullest potential. It is an effective tool to assist all councils to stay on course during the fraternal year and ensure success towards reaching your goals and ultimately Star Council. Do not summarily toss aside this publica-tion. Explore it, learn it, and use it! Another very useful resource of information and materials is the Supreme website, especially Offic-ers Online, which is available to certain council officers. On this website, you are able to review up-to-date information on your council, your mem-bership stats, reports, forms, and leadership publi-cations such as Knightline. Also, depending on your specific position in the order, you may have

access to the Officer Desk Reference, which pro-vides a wealth of information to help you direct your council and resolve certain issues that are common in the all councils Order wide. Additionally, the Officers Online offers a compre-hensive Fraternal Training Portal to help teach you to be a more effective leader for your members. As you can see, there are many resources available to help councils excel and succeed. Of course, never forget that your District Deputy and state officers are also there to assist you. Do not hesitate to ask for help. Thank you for entrusting me to be your State Sec-retary. If you have any questions, you may contact me at (815) 922-5773, or email at [email protected]. As I work a fulltime day job please keep mind that I will return you calls or emails as quickly as possi-ble so please when calling my phone leave a mes-sage. Vivat Jesus!

Worthy Brothers: Here we are at the end of summer and rushing head long onto fall. As the days grow shorter and the shadows grow longer it can mean only one thing—Yes it’s Tootsie Roll time! Illinois Knights of Co-lumbus Councils raise and give away a large amount of money each year. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are collected in those little yellow cans. Please remember that the monies collected are col-lected in the name of the Illinois State Council Charities Inc. This is the 501(c)3 arm of the Illinois State Council. Individual Councils are 501(c )8’s .The monies are not collected in the name of the individual councils. All monies collect-ed must be submitted to the State along with the ID form by November 1st. Any monies collected after this date must still be submitted and an amended form must accompany the funds. Remember by turning the funds into the State the donations are tax deductible. Each council receives 90% of their collected funds back for local dispersal. The 10% that is kept by the State is used for the Intellectual Disability Homes Program where ID approved organizations can re-

ceive a 0% home loan. Currently we have four loans in affect with a fifth loan under the approval process. Over the last twenty three years this next loan will become the sixty sixth home the Illinois Knights will have funded, with sixty one loans re-paid in full. ID funds are also used to help fund the Special Olympics. The next time you are in Bloomington-Normal stop by Special Olympics headquarters and see the great works that the Knights have done. They are located at 605 E Willow, Normal IL. As you stand on your street corner or next to a shopping center entrance take a long look at that little piece of chocolate candy you hold in your hand and think about the thousands of people it has helped! With all the good that it has done, it was truly- CHOSEN TO GO AND BEAR FRUIT THAT WILL REMAIN! Vivat Jesus,

State Treasurer

Worthy Grand Knights & District Deputies, Welcome to the Rockford (State Advocate) Files for 2017-2018. (Are any of you old enough to remember the Rockford Files with James Garner?). During the year I hope to send out general points of infor-mation that is relevant to most and at times, all Councils. These updates will include information on the Emblem of the Order and It’s Usage, Home Associations, Facebook & Social Media; and, our topic this month; the Safe Environment Pro-gram. The Safe Environment Program of the Knight of Columbus was put into effect several years ago. By now, Councils and District Deputies should be familiar with the program. On this episode, we deal with the case of the missing paper-work and how it can affect a Council’s Safe Environment Pro-gram & Status. As of August 15th, there were still a large number of Councils that have not submitted their Form 185 (Report of Officers) or their Form 365 (Service Program Per-sonnel Report). Why are these forms important? First, the Form 365 is required for a Council to attain STAR COUNCIL status. But, these forms are also important for the Knights of Columbus Safe Environment Program. Grand Knights and Council Youth Directors are required to take the Knights of Columbus Safe Environment program training. These forms provide the information for the Grand Knight and Council

Youth Director to the Supreme Council. Through these forms, the Supreme Council Safe Environment program can contact the Grand Knight and Council Youth Director to get them certified in the program. Without certification of the Grand Knight and Youth Director, a Council cannot conduct YOUTH programming which is a necessary component of STAR COUNCIL. Therefore, Diocesan Leadership, District Deputies and Grand Knights I ask that you please review your forms and make sure that you have submitted your Form 185 & 365. Chosen To Bear Fruit That Will Remain. The motto of our State Deputy. Seeds are being planted as we Ask new mem-bers to join us. As leaders of your Council or District, you have been “Chosen” to be the good Gardener and nurture new members by helping them to grow in the Knights of Colum-bus. Help them to get involved and be active, help them to “Bear Fruit.” If you do, then we will all see the “Fruit” of our labors grow and “Will Remain” as our Order continues to grow and serve our Church, Communities, Pro-Life, Families and Youth. Help a Catholic man today to reach his potential by “Choosing” him to Ask and join the Order.. Fraternally,

Brother Knights: Whoosh! Where does the time go? It only seems like yesterday that we were closing a chapter recog-nizing your achievements of the past fraternal year at the state convention. Fast forward, we are now midway through summer, starting a new chapter as we focus on the new fraternal year with new goals. Congratulations to all councils who achieved STAR council. Be sure to thank each member of your council for their contributions and hard work to make it happen. Before going any further, I want to take a moment and thank each of you for your support in electing me as your State Warden for the 2017-2018 fraternal year. I will do my best to be a voice of each of you and make decisions that will be in the best interest of the entire State Family that includes all of you. I look forward to a fantastic year and to meet some of you as I travel around the state. At our Summer DD meeting last month, I briefly addressed to our leadership team a few things that relate to our ceremonials in the Order. Today I want to address our admission degree. It is critical that the council membership director along with the Grand Knight incorporate into the council annual plan dates for admission degrees. We need to be

proactive instead of reactive in the recruiting pro-cess. Is your council one of those where your mem-bership is declining but nothing is being done to re-verse that trend. Let’s get out there and let the world know that we exist and have wonderful pro-grams to enrich their Christian fulfilment. While we do this, we must be ready with dates of our admis-sion degrees so we can share that with the prospects we converse with. As the Scout motto says, ‘be pre-pared’ and bring them in when their interest is high instead of weeks or even months later when many other people/organizations have filled that void and they are longer available or interested. How many of you know about the K of C applica-tion that is available to help you recruit on the spot? A great tool that can aide you in educating your prospects and getting their contact infor-mation. It’s free! So, download it and get recruiting to bring in new energy that your council so desper-ately needs. Till next time, take care and share the great works of our order with everyone you meet! Brother Knights, As we look back on the last fraternal year we can find much to be grateful. The Jurisdiction if Illinois is truly outstanding in the areas of Charitable Activities and council Program-ing. We are the envy of many throughout the Order. We have made some great strides, in the last few years, in demonstrating that the councils in Illinois can take that same expertise in Charities and Pro-gramming Activity and Membership in ensuring that each council and the order in general will have a bright future. The new fraternal year has begun with a renewed sense of enthusiasm. Our State Deputy Ted Stites and his team of Officers and Directors have an enthusiastic approach. Now is the time to dedicate our efforts to making our councils and Illinois successful for this Fraternal Year. If your council was not very successful in the membership Program planned, then it is now time to take a different approach and plan another membership program. Help from your District Deputy and Diocesan Chairman are readily available. You need only to ask and help will be forthcoming. Member-ship is a continuous activity that requires the effort of ALL the members of the council, even if it is simply provide a name of a Catholic Gentleman that can be a potential member. Each of us must make that commitment to our council that we will add new members this fraternal year. The time is NOW and the person that is needed is YOU. Vivat Jesus,

One First Degree, Per District, Per Month

Brother Knights, Worthy Grand Knights & District Deputies, Welcome to the new fraternal year! We should feel lucky that we have been given the opportunity this year to serve our fellow brother knights. I congratulate all of you for answering the call to serve our order in your leadership roles. It is obvious that all of you possess the leadership skills and dedication necessary to help your Council’s achieve, STAR COUNCIL status this fraternal year. In the words of our State Deputy as he states in his motto, you are “Chosen to Go And Bear Fruit That Will Remain”. Each and eve-ry one of you play an important part in our Orders mission. For the District Deputies, how appropriate since your role as District Deputy is to be a Friend, Mentor & Guide to the Grand Knights & Councils of your District. You are here to work in the fields of ILLINOIS. You are here to plant the seeds that will grow FRUIT, the future the order. This fruit must grow in abundance this year to help our order remain strong. The Membership Team is privileged and honored for having been selected by our State Deputy Theodore “Ted” Stites Jr. to serve you. Together with the State Officers, Diocesan Coordinators and their Associates and the General Agents and their Field Agents, we will be here to help you and to see that your Council & District meet their Membership goals and STAR COUNCIL. If you are willing put in the effort to suc-ceed, we are here to help. You just need to ask!

Just recently at the Supreme Convention Aug. 1-3, our Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson mentioned; “No other Catholic organization offers men what we do”. He goes further to say “We help a man to bolster his faith and strengthen his family though charity as part of a brotherhood of Catholic men”. We have done this for 135 years, and today we continue to do this in even greater ways”. The Illinois State Council has the best leaders in our order, YOU! Our order in Illinois needs all councils to embrace the idea of “One Member, Per Council, Per Month”. With this in mind, we can surpass our goal this year of 2,550 new members. By strengthening our councils, we can work to “Build the Domestic Church” within our families, our communities and ultimately our CHURCH.As we begin this year, please do not hesitate to ask for assistance from your Diocesan Leadership, Membership team or myself. Fraternally,

State Membership Director

The Membership Team would ask that your council always re-member that membership recruitment is a 365 Day Program. Re-gardless of the season, the field always needs to be tended! New member recruitment along with participation in Programming, Charities & Fraternal Benefits will guarantee your Council’s STAR COUNCIL status; and the best way to achieve STAR COUNCIL is hold at least One First Degree, Per District,

Brother Knights: I am privileged to be your General Programming Direc-tor this year. Thank you to State Deputy Ted Stites for entrusting this duty to me. I am looking forward to once again serving the state family as a selected state officer. By now you should have organized your Council’s plans for the upcoming fraternal year. Grand Knights, District Deputies and Council officers should have met and dis-cussed their plans for the year using the IL SP-7 as a planning tool for the upcoming year. Please remember that a copy of this form needs to be sent to the State Of-fice by Sept. 15. The Form can be found at www.illinisknights.org if you need a copy.

As we begin the new fraternal year we need remember that the programming is the spoke that drives the wheel that makes up our Council. Without effective program-ming, we have nothing to provide our members, and when there is nothing for our members we do not have a Council. So make sure you are planning effective pro-grams to engage your current members and appeal to those in your parish so they will want to join us.

You will hear a lot in the coming months about the pro-gram “Building the Domestic Church”. What was Father McGivney’s dream? His dream was to have a council in every parish. How do we accomplish that dream you ask? We accomplish this by getting our councils en-gaged in the “Building the Domestic Church” program that supreme has put together. The first and most im-portant thing that you need to do as a council when plan-ning out your fraternal years activities is to meet with the Pastor or Pastor’s associated with your Council. You need to reach out to them and ask the HOW OUR COUNCIL can help you Father. What can the Knights of Columbus do to help you build your parish, make it grow, and make it thrive. Working closely with our Par-ish Priests and engaging our Council in Parish activities, we can show the Parishioners that truly the Knights of Columbus are the Right arm of the Church and we are there to support our priests and our Parishes. If you have not yet scheduled a meeting with your priests, do it now, his support of the Council will only help his parish be stronger. More information on the “Building the Domes-tic Church” can be found at http://www.kofc.org/en/domestic-church/index.html.

Our Councils need to now start ordering and planning for the upcoming Soccer Challenge. The State finals are

scheduled for Saturday November 4, 2017 in Charleston, IL. Illinois was lucky to have 2 International winners this past year, and we look forward to a successful year again. Any questions on Soccer should be directed to Tom West. By the time this newsletter goes to press, the State Softball Tournament happened. It was the week-end of August 19 and 20th in Highland, IL. Coming up in September is the State Horse Shoe and Bags Tourna-ment. Chairman Jerome Rakers and his team in Trenton are working hard to make this a fun event. Details on this are on the State Website. Contact Jerome Rakers if you need additional information. It is also not too early to start ordering your Essay Contest Kits, and your Keep Christ in Christmas Poster Contest kits as well. School is starting soon, and these are great programs for us to use to engage the School Children in our areas.

The last thing I wish to address in this article is forms. Councils have been very good this year at submitting their forms, but we still have about 25% of our Councils that have yet to submit a form 365, this is the Service Program Report. I encourage you to check and make sure that your Council has submitted its report so the appropriate chairman can get the proper information on the program area that they are responsible for. We also want to encourage you to submit your monthly activities for Program of the month. The form for this is available on the State Website. Also, every Council should be recognizing a Family of the Month and Knight of the month. Each month, all submissions we receive for Pro-grams in each area, Family of the Month and Knight of the Month will all be reviewed and a winner will be se-lected each month and a certificate will be sent out. De-tails on this and the forms are also on the State Website. Use the website as a tool for the information you need, we are constantly working to update the information and try to be as current and correct as we can.

I would like to wish the Best of Luck to all councils this year and look forward to seeing about the programs you are participating in. Remember “Every Program Represents a Membership Recruitment Opportunity”

Brother Knights, Thank you for the privilege of letting me work with you as your new Charitable Activities Director. The sum-mer months are the perfect time to plan for success as we start the new fraternal year. One measure of the success of our councils is certainly the sharing of the members’ time, talents, and treasures in the many chari-table works of the Order, and of our Church and parishes. In the weeks and months ahead, we have many op-portunities to show that we are “Chosen to Go and Bear Fruit That Will Remain” by practicing the first princi-ple of our Order…Charity! We opened the new fraternal year with a spirited Organizational Meeting in Springfield. There we met the members of the State Charitable Activities Team and discussed how each council can be successful in meeting its charitable goals while using these opportunities to grow our councils. By showing Catholic gentlemen the good work we do, we make the Order attractive to eligible men and their families. By this time, our councils should be well into its preparations for the Intellectual Disabilities Drive. Dates, lo-cations, volunteers, and schedules are all important details which need our attention. Councils please remem-ber to make payments for candy orders, and ensure that you have up to date insurance for conducting the drive. Let’s make this year’s drive a special one as we help the people with special needs throughout the state of Illinois. Another featured charitable program this year is the Newman Apostolate Program supporting Catholic facili-ties at public colleges and universities throughout the state. In 2017, the Illinois Knights of Columbus cele-brate 100 years of support to our Newman Centers. In honor of this occasion, we are proud to announce our initiative focusing on increasing our Century Donors in the State of Illinois: “Centuries for the Century”. Our goal is to increase the number of Century Donors by 25%. Our State Newman goal is to increase funds re-ceived by 10%, so if we could raise $5 per member for 72,000 members in the state, we would raise an in-credible $360,000! I ask that you prayerfully consider a special donation to the Newman fund this fraternal year. The Vocations Raffle has kicked off at the State Organizational Meeting. Now is the time to order raffle tickets for your councils. For each $15 book, the council keeps $9 while $6 goes to support vocations and seminari-ans—the future of the Church! The drawing will be held at the December 1-3 DD Midyear meeting. Another ongoing featured charitable program will support our Pro-Life efforts with continuing focus on pro-grams such as ultrasound machine purchases and “baby showers”. Remember that it’s still important to “pass the can” at your council meetings and that the council makes regu-lar donations to the General Assistance Fund so that we can support the special needs of worthy individuals and organizations when needed. In closing, thank you my Brother Knights for all you do to promote the CHARITABLE works of the Order throughout the State of Illinois. As we practice the first principle of the Order, let us continue to do so with a smile on our faces, kindness in our hearts, and a renewed commitment to growth of our councils through the good that we do! Brother Knights: Welcome to a new year. There are many activities that we as Knights do in our councils for the good of the order. Sometimes it seems that the out-

standing work we do as Knights for our Church and community is our best-kept secret. That’s un-fortunate, because these works could attract quali-

fied men to join our Order and increase our ability to do good for others.

The charity that we do as Knights is a charity that evangelizes others. Honoring those who champion

many of the events we sponsor, emphasizes that charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism is im-portant, and inspires others to become champions

themselves.

Our activities demonstrate that we can be effective agents of change. Our councils have brother Knights and families that strive mightily and self-

lessly toward a goal that benefits many, rather than each other individually. As a team, we can accom-plish more. We add value to our council members

only when we value them.

There are many tools available for council recogni-tion such as Knight of the Month, and Family of

the Month for council members. Additionally, there are also three programs that will proclaim many of the good works of your councils. They

are:

1. Council Newsletter Award Contest

2. Council Activity Scrapbook Award Contest

3. Council Community Public Relations Award Con-test

I encourage every council to participate in these programs which can be found on the state website.

Also, I encourage councils to send articles and pic-tures of many of the events they do to me for pub-lication.

In Matthew 5:13, Jesus reminds us not to light our

lamps under a bushel basket. Let’s proclaim the good works of the order. We are chosen to go and bear fruit that will remain.

Vivat Jesus!

Garry Becky Daly

Public relations can be a very useful communications tool in letting people know what the Knights of Columbus is about and the good works that our members do. The Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus publishes a complete guide on Public Relations and Publicity for councils which can be found at: https://www.kofc.org/en/resources/service/council/publicity.pdf

Council Newsletter Award Contest Many councils in Illinois publish monthly or bimonthly newsletters, and a competition is held each year for the Council Newsletter Award, which is awarded at the annual state convention. Every council is encouraged to produce a newsletter, because it's a very good way of staying in touch with members, and encouraging less active members to become more involved. Entries in this category will include actions and activities that advance the awareness and positive image of the Knights of Columbus in the parish and the community at large. Newsletters will be judged by fellow Knights from the six dioceses in the state. A table will be provided at the state conven-tion, for placement of your council newsletters for the fraternal year. Entries, with their form, must be placed on the table by 12:00 Noon on the Saturday of the state convention weekend.

Council Activity Scrapbook Award Contest A council activity scrapbook is an opportunity to present your council’s programs and activities for the fraternal year. It showcases a council’s milestones and memories of its parish, community, events and many of the faithful surrounding the council. This includes, but is not limited to, how well the contents of the scrapbook reflect the five service program areas, the number of activities the council participated in during the year, continuity, and quality of contents. Scrapbooks will be judged by fellow Knights from the six dioceses in the state. A table will be provided at the state conven-tion, for placement of your council scrapbook for the fraternal year.

Entries with their form, must be placed on the table by 12:00 Noon on the Saturday of the state convention weekend.

Council Community Public Relations Award Contest Public relations is based on communicating a message to an audience. To build a truly effective public relations program, the council’s messages should be ongoing to strengthen the Order’s image and broaden its impact on society.

Following the guidelines in this site, you will be able to conduct effective and consistent publicity programs for your council. There are many rewards and benefits to a well-planned public relations program. For the Knights of Columbus, an effective program can:

• Create awareness in the community for our Order and its contributions.

• Build a positive image for the Knights of Columbus as a whole, and your council in particular.

• Create valuable exposure for the council and its activities.

• Communicate key messages to target audiences.

• Clear away misconceptions.

• Strengthen community support for the Knights of Columbus and its mission.

• Assist in recruiting new members.

Public relations is communications designed to create positive, widespread awareness of an organization, its role, programs and mission. A critical part of public relations is publicity. Successful publicity efforts result in editorial media exposure in the form of news or feature articles in newspapers and magazines, and references, announcements or interviews on radio and television stations. Publicity is a very effective way to inform the public about the many aspects of the Knights of Columbus in your community.

Entries, with their form, must be received no later than one week prior to the state convention weekend.
