Direction : Read the passage carefully andanswer the questions :The term ‘discipline’ has different connotationsin different situations. In its most exactedsense, it means self discipline, a process bywhich an individual regulates and manageshis own behavior patterns to fit in with his ownaims and purposes on the needs andrequirements of others. Discipline, in thissense, involves the development of charactereducation. In a narrow sense, involves thedevelopment of character education. In anarrow sense, it means punishment, as in thecase of someone being ‘disciplined’.When teachers talk about matters relating todiscipline, they refer to the problem ofmaintaining classroom order and of the largerconcept of maintaining classroom order andof the larger concept of classroommanagement. The problems of classroommanagement are intimately linked to the largerconcerns of teaching styles, motivation, interest, strategies for ensuring success, theeffect of group forces and the incorporationof mental hygiene principles into dailyclassroom practice. However, many educatorsand administrators have not accepted theexistence of the problem of managing theclassroom or they have related the problemsto poor teachers and their teaching. Whenproblems of management erupt the adviceand guidance given to teachers will be to“establish rapport”, “make learning interesting”or “manifest warmth, friendlinessunderstanding and patience for students.”These may be desirable attributes to developbut in themselves they will not help inmanaging the classroom. Other practical stepshave to be taken to manage the classroom.Teachers must follow a developmentapproach to discipline and use those approvedpractices found to be successful by goodmanagers. Since the goals of classroomdiscipline and education are the same, mainly,to help pupils become self directing, the olderconcepts of discipline stressing the use ofpupils energy to control themselves ordivorced from educational goals.
