Three new ranges from Hertex Fabrics
Be totally amazed. Amazed 3 an appropriate name for an
amazing collection of the most scrumptious jacquard fabrics sourced
from top international mills. Hertex Fabrics is proud to add this exciting
fabric to its collection. Most of the designs, such as the graceful
paisley Euphoric and the Fendi type labyrinth pattern, are cut-pile
velvets. Kino and Ikat are high-end flat wovens that co-ordinate and
complement the velvets by colour and mood. Gina is available in three
cutting edge colour combinations in a traditional design, woven with
top quality acrylic chenille and lustrous viscose yarns. Simplicity, as
the name suggests, is a simple, colourful vertical cut-pile velvet stripe
while Stupendous is the modern, large scale floral in bright
colourways. Combined with Abstracto this quality collection has a
distinctly modern edge.
Afro Slick: so much more than meets the eye. It is much more than a book of faux leathers. Afro Slick
incorporates everything that is exciting about the new poly-vinyl and poly-urethane revolution that has struck the
furnishing industry. Animal skins, a fly-boy and bomber jacket scuffed leather-look, metallics, tooled and printed
plethers, as well as patents with gold and silver prints and inlays. Smooth brings you a range of wild colours with a
hi-tech new look all of its own. Add to this some realistic hard-wearing fauxs in the traditional furnishing shades from
off-white to chocolate and black and you have a collection covering every possible angle for upholstery use.
In search of Nobility: With the introduction of the Nobility
Collection, Hertex ensures that you will be noticed. The Nobility
Collection forms part of the faBELLA range and consists of plains and
semi plains. The emphasis of this collection is on the natural look,
which never dates and effortlessly fits into any décor scheme. True to
the faBELLA range, the Nobility Collection contains Italian flair and
design, offering a wide variety of natural and plain fabrics.

The Nobility Collection contains something for every designer and consists of the following fabrics: Aswan, a fabric
mimics luxury and comfort. It consists of a cotton, viscose and linen combination. The soft suede handle
emphasises opulence and comfort. Nobu is a textile that has a similar composition as Aswan and also contains silk
for extra allure and coir that imitates a chunky Bedouin appearance. Neon is a bright and colourful material that
consists of an array of stunning colours and Sami, a herringbone cloth, with subtle but spectacularly well-balanced
colour combinations.
The above collections are now available from Hertex Fabrics, a leading South African supplier of fabrics to the
furnishing and design industry □

Albert Carpets Introduces Practical Alternative to Laminate Flooring
Albert Carpets has introduced a new vinyl product
called Grandeco, a unique, stylish, modern and
practical alternative to laminate flooring, which is
available in a wide range of colours, textures and styles.
Grandeco is a trendy, functional and affordable floor-covering, is
hardwearing and adds character and style to any room. Especially
suited to bathrooms and kitchens, Grandeco is impervious to water
spills and will not lift and if one plank should be damaged, it can be
lifted and replaced with a new one. Floors take more stress and strain
than any other surface, yet we still expect them to endure the thrills
and spills and general wear and tear of life and come out looking as
good as new. With this product you have the best of both worlds with
all the pros of wood and laminate: a hard wearing low maintenance
floor-covering, without the concerns of water damage and bad
acoustics.

Aqua Creations Makeover of Nhow Hotel
Aqua Creations have taken on the challenge of redressing and lighting up the prestigious hotel lobby of the Nhow
Hotel in Milan, transforming it with bold new pieces by Ayala Serfaty.
Shasta Table Hand-sculpted out of clay, the Shasta table exhibits
a simple and minimalistic aesthetic. With its organic
shape, smooth contours and clean lines, this ceramic
table doubles as a side coffee table as well as a
sculptural element. Designed by Ayala Serfaty, the
Shasta table was created in collaboration with
ceramic artist Marcelle Klein.
Gladis Lounge Chair The Gladis Lounge chair is hand-made from a
variety of high-end fabrics provided by several
textile manufacturers in different price ranges,
among them Creation Baumann. The fabric is
upholstered over ergonomically shaped
polyurethane foam, designed for optimal comfort.
Set on a swiveling ten-wheeled base allowing
natural movement and positioning, the Gladis
lounge chair radiates an ethereal quality
enhanced by its hand-stitched details, thus
providing a ripple effect, reminiscent of the fluid
forms found in nature.
Ears Stool Created from a solid metal cushioned tripod
frame, the Ears stool is an updated version of
Aqua Creations 1998 Isa stool which was
custom-designed for New Yorks hip Kerquelen
shoe store.

Ears Stool cont. The first of a ground-breaking series of three-
dimensional hand-crafted felt upholstered pieces,
the Ears stool proposes innumerable options for
custom design using multi-layered felt. Offering a
dramatic reprieve from a sea of upholstery, the
hand-crafted felt will naturally give rise to limited
edition series and one-of-a-kind creations.
Designed by Ayala Serfaty, the Ears stool was
created in collaboration with textile artist Irit
Dulman.
Apaya Floor Lamp Exemplifying Ayala Serfatys warm and organic style, the statuesque
Apaya floor lamp rises to a height of 180 cm and is made from hand-
crafted mohair and angora felt mixed with pure silk, dressed over a
clear cylinder. Being the first of its kind, the Apaya floor lamp will set
the tone for a new hand-crafted felt sculptural lighting collection by
Aqua Creations. Naturally pressed and applied in an undulate form,
the particular handcraft presupposes limited edition series and one-of-
a-kind creations. Designed by Ayala Serfaty, the handcrafted Apaya
floor lamp was made in collaboration with textile artist Irit Dulman.

Full Steam Ahead with the Gautrain
Rhodesfield Station
NThe stations are designed by different architects who
will all imprint their unique personalities on these
environments, but this theme will be as prevalent as
the different lines that so typifies the London
Underground, giving the Gautrain a clear and
recognisable system identity,O Steer explains.
Even though the design ethos is based on such a
traditional notion, the platform and concourse
structures will be contemporary in overall feel, making
sure that they remain relevant and appealing well into
the future.
Glass is a major consideration in the design of the
stations, in order to make the most of the abundant
light that the province enjoys. The Sandton station
descends over 50 metres into the earth and a large
glass canopy over the escalator well draws light from
the east and south, deep into the lower levels, as
inspired by a similar station in Paris. NThe other
stations are mostly quite simple buildings, but all of
them are designed according to green principles, key
among which is the maximisation of natural light and
making every opportunity for natural ventilationO he
continues.
Continued on page 12
Apart from electricity, or the lack thereof, one of the
hottest topics in architecture and design circles is the
Gautrain. Glass South Africa>s SmartGlass
newsletter, spoke to Tom Steer of Gautrain Architects
Joint Venture (GAJV), the Johannesburg firm
responsible for overseeing the architectural ethos in all
the train stations designs, in a project that is costing
around R4million per hour to build.
NWhen deciding on the architectural theme for the
stations, we considered the Gautrain as a network for
the province and we looked at other networks in South
Africa for inspiration. In rural KwaZulu Natal, aerial
photographs revealed pathways between communities,
with no single community being the hub 3 clusters of
acacia trees are the shady havens where people meet
to socialise, barter and communicate. Because the
Gautrain stations will be meeting points, and places of
connection for the people of Gauteng, weve used the
Acacia tree and its umbrella shape as an influence
throughout.O
Sandton Station
iid insight e-newsletter page 12 www.iidprofessions.com
Full Steam Ahead with the Gautrain (cont)
NWorking with Bombela has taught us so much. The
consortium insists on international standards and
procedures, and the skills and disciplines that the
South African contractors have learned on this project
will stand us in good stead in the future. While there
have been some specialist skills and products that
weve had to import, the project has placed a very
strong focus on local content and products. Even
where there are products that are available abroad
that may be more efficient, there are local
counterparts that do the job just as well, and that cost
less 3 so weve used them.O
In spite of frequently negative sentiment in the
marketplace, Steer is proud of the integrity hes
experienced on the project. NIts not going to be long
before people begin to understand the hugely positive
impact that the Gautrain is going to have on our lives,
and by 2011 when its finished, its going to be an
essential part of Gautengs infrastructure 3 were going
to wonder what we ever did without it!O he concludes □

Green Building Conference and Exhibition 2009
For the second year Dulux Trade is proud to be one
of the main sponsors of the Green Building
Conference 2009. The event will be hosted at the
Sandton Convention Centre, Jo'burg, on the 7 and 8
July 2009.
All major construction projects should be commissioned
as 'green buildings' and those that are not will face
severe criticism and a potentially reduced future value,
as pressure mounts from investors, property owners,
blue chip tenants (public and private), and the
professional team. The reason for this pressure is that
buildings have a massive and extended impact on the
environment and all stakeholders are beginning to
understand the magnitude of the opportunity lost when
project owners and managers fail to embrace the
principles of green building.
The Green Building Conference and Exhibition is
geared towards the professional team and seeks to
provide valuable and applicable insights from a select
group of local and international speakers. Dulux Trade
is committed to deliver products and services that will
meet the requirements of 'green buildings' in South
Africa. Last year, Dulux Trade successfully launched
the Environmental Wash System and Light & Space.

latest innovations! For more information, visit
