    Zoe Sameth is a bilingual (Spanish/English) educator,

    trainer, speaker and consultant working with students of

    all ages to raise well-being and culvate more awareness,

    connecon, resilience and joy. Through these expanded

    capacies, individuals and organizaons are able to navi-

    gate challenges and achieve their desired results with

    more ease and sasfacon. Zoe has a Master’s degree in

    Experienal Educaon and over thirty years’ experience in

    the eld. She has provided support to many Head Start

    and Early Head Start programs naonally and throughout

    California. Zoe came to her work in part through her expe-

    riences living in Sri Lanka in 1983, where she was rst ex-

    posed to mindfulness pracces, and where she was also

    caught in the beginning of the Sri Lankan civil war. Her

    experiences in Sri Lanka led Zoe to adapt and teach a di-

    versity of powerful and easily accessible techniques and

    strategies for managing trauma and stress. In addion to

    her work locally and naonally, in 2011 Zoe returned to

    Asia, where she taught these skills to sex-tracked wom-

    en and their children, and to girls at risk in India and Ne-

    pal. Zoe’s “Deep Relaxaon” and “Calm Your Mind, Li

    Your Spirit” audio programs are available in English and

    Spanish and are used by adults, youth and children

    al informaon. KEYNOTE TOPIC: Mindfulness and Self -

    Care: Key developmental building blocks Mindfulness – a

    special way of paying aenon – is being used with great

    success in the elds of educaon and health. Mindful-

    ness develops the capacity for self -regulaon, aenon

    and awareness, which creates opmal condions for

    teaching and learning. This presentaon also explores

    how the way in which we take care of ourselves aects

    not only our own wellbeing, but the well-being of those

    around us including the children and families we serve.

    Keynote aendees will learn, experience and reect on

    mulple mindfulness and self -care pracces and ideas to

    help adults and children develop greater focus, balance,

    and well-being. They will leave with tools and techniques

    that can be applied immediately!

    Colleen A. Kra, MD, is a graduate of the rst Head Start

    class in 1965. She went on to receive her undergraduate

    degree at Virginia Tech and her M.D. from Virginia Com-

    monwealth University. She completed her residency in

    Pediatrics at Virginia Commonwealth University. Dr. Kra

    is currently the medical director for Health Network byCincinna Children’s (HNCC). HNCC is a community-based

    network of providers in and outside of the Cincinna Chil-

    dren’s family whose mission is to improve the system of

    healthcare for kids in the Cincinna community. Dr. Kra

    is the co-author of the book Managing Chronic Health

    Condions in Child Care and Schools. She has been ac-

    vely involved in pediatric engagement in school and

    child care for children with special health care needs. She

    serves on the Naonal Medical Home Project Advisory

    Commiee at the American Academy of Pediatrics. She is

    a content expert for Text4Baby and chairs the Naonal

    Health in Head Start Advisory Commiee. KEYNOTE TOP-

    IC: Developmental Science and Building Health in Head

    Start The science of early brain development oers

    greater understanding into how poverty, food/housing

    insecurity, and poor social-emoonal buering of adver-

    sity aect the development of our children in Head

    Start. This presentaon will discuss aspects of early

    brain development, toxic stress, acvies to support the

    developing brain, and the importance of parent/

    caregiver support. Head Start is a strategy to improvehealth and brain development, and those aending the

    session will understand how Head Start can help pre-

    vent the intergeneraonal transfer of health disparies.
