facebook.com/IHMatlanta @IHMatl Dear friends in the Lord, As I write this on Tuesday, I am attending the Assembly of Bishops and Priests of the ecclesiastical Province of Atlanta, which includes the states of Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. These Assemblies have been going on for more than 30 years, but the dynamics have changed as the Catholic Church in the South has experienced a dramatic transformation over those years. When I was ordained in 1984, I became Atlanta’s 72nd priest. We were a small presbyterate, but we were by far the largest of the five dioceses in the three states. These Provincial Assemblies were conceived in those days pri- marily to offer us continuing professional education; but we valued them even more for the opportunity to meet one another, pray, dine and laugh together, and encourage one another in our ministry to a Catholic Church that represented only about 3% of the population in our states. By contrast, the four priests ordained for Atlanta this year joined a presbyterate that now numbers 290; and each of the dioceses in our province now has its own substantial continuing education program for priests, who serve a Catholic community that comprises nearly 30% of the population. But these Assem- blies remain an important opportunity for us to nurture friendships and support one another in our vocation and ministries. The lecturer at this year’s Assembly is Father Thomas Rosica, C.S.B., the CEO of Canada’s Salt and Light Catholic Media. A media attach for the Synods of Bishops of 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2015, Father Rosica has worked closely with St. John Paul II, Benedict XVI and now Francis, and he is able to reflect on their respective ministries with tremendous insight. Thank you for your prayers for your bishops and priests, during this year’s Assembly and always. Dear friends in the Lord,

As I write this on Tuesday, I am attending the Assembly of Bishops

and Priests of the ecclesiastical Province of Atlanta, which includes the states of

Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. These Assemblies have been

going on for more than 30 years, but the dynamics have changed as the Catholic

Church in the South has experienced a dramatic transformation over those

years.

When I was ordained in 1984, I became Atlanta’s 72nd priest. We

were a small presbyterate, but we were by far the largest of the five dioceses in

the three states. These Provincial Assemblies were conceived in those days pri-

marily to offer us continuing professional education; but we valued them even

more for the opportunity to meet one another, pray, dine and laugh together,

and encourage one another in our ministry to a Catholic Church that represented

only about 3% of the population in our states.

By contrast, the four priests ordained for Atlanta this year joined a

presbyterate that now numbers 290; and each of the dioceses in our province

now has its own substantial continuing education program for priests, who serve a

Catholic community that comprises nearly 30% of the population. But these Assem-

blies remain an important opportunity for us to nurture friendships and support one

another in our vocation and ministries.

The lecturer at this year’s Assembly is Father Thomas Rosica, C.S.B., the

CEO of Canada’s Salt and Light Catholic Media. A media attache for the Synods of

Bishops of 2008, 2012, 2014 and 2015, Father Rosica has worked closely with St.

John Paul II, Benedict XVI and now Francis, and he is able to reflect on their

respective ministries with tremendous insight.

Thank you for your prayers for your bishops and priests, during this year’s

Assembly and always.

Your brother in Christ’s word and work,

The Parish Office will be closed for Labor Day on Monday, September 5.

To assist in recovery efforts after domestic disasters, like the flood in Louisiana and wildfires in California, please contact Catholic Charities USA at 1-800-919-9338. For international disasters, like the recent earthquake in Italy, please contact Catholic Relief Services at 1-877-435-7277.

NEW YOUTH MINISTRY! NEW SUNDAY NIGHT MASS MUSIC!

NEW SPANISH MASS SCHEDULE!

Life Teen (for our high school students) and The EDGE (for our middle school

students) are coming to IHM this fall! This enhancement of our Youth Ministry

programs, the result of Monsignor Al’s consultation with teens, parents, the Parish

Pastoral Council and our catechetical staff, will begin on Sunday, September 11,

when our Faith Formation programs kick off.

Life Teen and The EDGE (together with a session of GIFT classes for elementary age

children) will take place following the Sunday 5:00 p.m. Mass. A musical team of

adults and teens has been rehearsing since the beginning of this month and will pro-

vide beautiful liturgical music for this Mass in a more contemporary style, beginning

in September.

In order to create space and time for this Youth Ministry enhancement, the Spanish

Mass that has been celebrated Sunday night at 7:00 will move to Saturday evening at

6:00 p.m., beginning on Labor Day weekend, September 3-4.

SING A NEW SONG TO THE LORD! FOR HE HAS DONE WONDERFUL DEEDS!

ous small jobs around your house, you could

obtain some help by hiring a Safe

Environment approved volunteer from the St.

Vincent de Paul IHM Conference to help you

with your work.

Simply make a donation to the St. Vincent de

Paul IHM Conference in the amount of $25.00

for every hour the volunteer spends on your

job. This is a win, win, win situation: we help

you, you help the St. Vincent de Paul IHM

Conference, and the St. Vincent de Paul helps

the many people in need. So if you need

some assistance with small jobs around the

house, call 770-986-4996 and ask for Dirk.

Dates To Remember

Eligible students will receive their First Holy Communion at regular Mass times on

the weekends of April 29-30 and May 6-7, 2017.

As part of their preparation to receive the Eucharist, students will make their first

confessions at special penance services on November 7 and November 14, 6:30 p.m.

Parents of First Communion candidates should plan to attend an important meeting

in the main church on October 3 at 6:30 p.m. This includes parents of IHM School

students. Please submit the sacramental enrollment form (see below) prior to the

meeting.

Students who are eligible to receive the sacraments of Confirmation or First Holy Communion during the 2016-2017 school year may now enroll for sacramental preparation online at http://www.ihmatlanta.org/sacramental-enrollment. Hard copies are also available in the parish office. Enrollment for sacramental prepara-tion will remain open through September. Please note that this is a separate form intended only for sacramental preparation. Families who wish to enroll students in our regular Faith Formation programs (G.I.F.T., The Edge, and Life Teen) should use the Faith Formation enrollment form (http://ihmatlanta.org/faith-formation-enrollment). Students who will be participating in both programs—for instance, 10th-graders who will attend the weekly Life Teen sessions and the special Confirmation prep sessions—should submit both forms.

The Liturgy of the Word for Children offers children, ages 4-7, the opportunity to hear God’s Word in an accessible and engaging format. They listen to the scrip-tures, say the Creed, and offer their prayers in language appropriate to their age level. We offer the Children’s Liturgy at 9:00 Mass throughout the school year. Note: Due to a shortage of volunteer leaders, for the time being we will not be offering the Children’s Liturgy at 11:30 Mass.

Faithful Citizenship A new series of adult programs will begin along with our other faith formation clas-

ses on September 11. We will meet in the IHM School Library at two different times

on Sundays: 10:15-11:15 a.m. or 6:15-7:30 p.m. No registration is necessary. Please

plan to join us at whichever session is most convenient for you.

Our subject for the first few weeks will be Faithful Citizenship. Members of the IHM

Social Justice Committee will help guide us through the recently updated teachings

of the U.S. Catholic Bishops on this timely subject.

este otoño en IHM. Las consultas que ha llevado a cabo Monseñor Al con
