A study from McMaster University enrolled two groups of women on a 12-week resistance training programme – half of the group were given sugary energy drinks immediately after their workout and again an hour later, while the other half were given fat-free milk at the same times. The milk group lost more weight and gained more lean muscle. Stu Phillips, who led the study, says, “We expected the gains in muscle mass to be greater, but the fat loss surprised us.

Ignite Fitness and Wellness, says, “The calf muscle can become shortened due to a variety of reasons – in your case, the dislocation of your knee. The medical term is shortened gastrocnemius and it occurs due to the tightening of the muscle.

“The best treatment is to stretch the calf muscle by regularly doing wall lunges and toe pulls. Try to spend five or ten minutes stretching every morning before you get on with your day.

Self-confessed material girl Tori Leckieswopped her Jimmy Choos for runningshoes and discovered a different side toherself. She tells Louisa Wilkins her !ory.

M arketing manager ToriLeckie, 34, thoughtshe was destined for

a future of gliteratti, handbagsand the high life. However,waking up to her uniquesporting abilities has changedher lifestyle dramatically.

Before... “I was a typical20-something intent on a lifeof partying.

“Although I had been sportywhen I was younger, it all fellby the wayside when I went toboarding school at the age of13. It wasn’t cool to be sporty,but it was cool to get intotrouble. So, I became a bit ofa rebel. My friend and I usedto pretend to go running, butwould take a change of clothesin our backpacks and headinto town.

“At university I did thebare minimum, shoppingand partying on my father’s‘emergency’ credit card.”

It all changed when... “I hitmy mid-20s. I had finisheduniversity and life suddenlyfelt very precious. My next bigbirthday was 30 and it felt likemy 20s had been and gone.

“I started thinking aboutwho I am and what I wantedout of life. From the age of 11,my father and I had regularlygone mountain climbing.When I thought about mylife, I realised that mountain

climbing was more than justa hobby for me. I thought,‘I love climbing. I thrive onit!’ So I decided to dedicatemyself more to my climbingthan to my social life.”

As a result... “I started runningas training for mountainclimbing. Running is addictive,it’s a real high. I find I haveall my best ideas when I amrunning – I often think I shouldtake a dictaphone!

“My lifestyle changed asI started opting for earlynights in over a night outwith friends. You can’t go outpartying if you want to getup when it is still dark andrun for two hours. Eventuallycertain friends stopped callingas I kept saying ‘No’ to socialplans. But they were not thetrue friends anyway.

“In early 2008 I moved toDubai and joined a runningclub. Within six months I hadrun my first half marathon.”

Since then... “Running hasbecome a sport for me in it’sown right. In September lastyear, I went to Jordan to runa half marathon. The daybefore the race, I decided thatI would run the full 42kmmarathon. I hadn’t trained forit and my maximum beforethen had been 27km. I did itand won! I was buzzing, andkept thinking, ‘What next?’

“In January I climbedAconagua in Argentina... nearly7,000m high with minus 40degree winds. A week later Iran the Dubai marathon in justover three and a half hours,chatting all the way. I thought,‘Maybe I have a bit of a talentfor this.’

“Since then, I have run twoultra marathons – in Februarya 75km run, and in April Icame first in the 50km DeadSea Ultra in Jordan.”

Moving forward fromhere... “I don’t miss the partylifestyle I’ve given up. I havefound my true passion in life.

“I’m now much moredown-to-earth. I mix withpeople from all walks oflife and do lots of charitywork. Sport makes youvery grounded, which isparticularly importantin today’s society, whereeveryone is so status madand materialistic.

“I used to be like that, too– I used to be a spoilt littleprincess. But it doesn’t matterwhat car you drive on therunning track. You are all inshorts, T-shirts and trainers.It makes it a level playing field,where you can develop greatfriendships with like-mindedsporty people and achieve yourpersonal goals.” A
