Social
When envisioning the city of the future, I find these areas to be the most important to evaluate.
UrbanizationThe world population in cities are facing a dramatic increase. According to united nations, today 50% of the world population lives in cities, and by 2050 70% of world the population will live in cities.
The world population in cities are facing a dramatic increase. This will strain available resources and might cause negative externalities
Architecture
VerticalAs urbanization is increasing, I envision the city of the future with many skyscrapers. To reduce urban sprawl and include all socio-economic levels, the cities will grow vertical.
Greener
Green TechnologySkyscrapers and houses will incorporate more green technology, as an eco-friendly environment has gone from ideal to a necessity.
TransportationPublic transport will be improved and more efficient. I imagine the large cities to build huge parking spaces outside central, where people can park their cars. From there, eclectic buses, monorails and other transit systems will take them around the city. This is to reduce individual transportation and concentration of cars.
ResourcesA shift from fossil fuels like oil, gas and coal to a more renewable source of energy will allow cities to be more sustainable.
Sustainable resources to be used in the future cities:
• Wind energy• Solar energy• Wave energy• Hydropower• Tidal energy
EnvironmentBecause technology is the new future, I believe there will be less pollution. There will also be other smaller measures to improve the environment in urban areas, such as:
Recycling of all waste will be a requirement
Grey water re-use becomes mandatory
SocialDiversity
Advances in transportation and communication will promote more travel and migration. Cities will be more
diverse and inclusive
Racism Because of increased diversity, I believe racism will decrease. High migration will lead to multicultural
identities.
CrimeTraditional crime will be almost eliminated due to
increased number of surveillance cameras. But a new problem will occur; cyber crime.
Conclusion
To envision the city of the future is not easy. This presentation provides a picture of how I personally envision the city of the future by including the most important areas of how a city is likely to develop.
Cities are different, and their future are not the same. All in all, I believe technology will grow rapidly, and the importance of technology will be bigger than ever. To some cities it may be finding ways to relieve pollution or congestion - using sensors and data analysis. For others, it is more about finding ways to make cities greener - with bike-sharing schemes or more parks.
