The Boise Foothills rise up into the Boise Front, totaling a 5,000-foot rise from the valley floor. This natural backdrop for Idaho’s capital city and Statehouse provides identity, recreational access, a home for wildlife, and open spaces. “It is exciting to tell the story about Boise’s backyard,” says IdahoPTV producer Joan Cartan-Hansen. “The Foothills mean many things to many people but almost everyone agrees they are a treasure worth exploring and preserving. This OUTDOOR IDAHO episode just begins to tell the Foothills’ story.” The episode relates some of the area’s history of the past half-century, which includes devastating mud slides, interagency agreements, foothills development and the growth of recreational use. People who brought Hulls Gulch to the community’s attention and worked on Boise’s 2001 levy proposal point out the results when individuals, private businesses and governments work together. Today, with the help of the levy, there are 10,000 acres of public open space and 135 miles of trails for recreational use. On the foothills’ trails, OUTDOOR IDAHO’s cameras join people who mountain bike, run and walk, follow wildflower seasons, and just climb a hill to watch the moon rise. Others teach children about the outdoors, wildlife, recreational opportunities and more using the Boise Foothills as a classroom.

On June 7 host Marcia Franklin talks with Jac Venza, the founder of some of the most iconic arts programming on PBS, including GREAT PERFORMANCES. The 85-year-old Venza was in Moscow recently to speak at the University of Idaho’s College of Arts and Architecture’s Speaker Series. He and Franklin talk about his long career in public broadcasting, the potential effects of cuts in funding by the National Endowment for the Arts to traditional PBS arts programming, and the trends he’s following in the arts. Upon his retirement from WNET in 1997, where he was director of cultural and arts programs, Venza received PBS’ highest honor, the Ralph

Lowell Award. He is also the recipient of a personal Peabody Award and the primetime Emmys’ Governor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement. For her annual Good Summer Reading program on June 21, Franklin interviews authors Kim Barnes and Tim Cahill. In addition to discussing the themes of their work and styles of writing, the authors also recommend books for good summer reading, as do viewers. Barnes, a University of Idaho professor of English, is the author of five books. Cahill, a founding editor of Outside Magazine, is the author of 10 books, most of which are about adventure and travel. Also, DIALOGUE’s monthly Reporters’ Roundup airs June 28.Sponsors: Laura Moore Cunningham Foundation, Idaho Forest Products CommissionDdial

In her own words, Idaho’s Rosalie Sorrels describes herself as a storyteller, troubadour, songwriter and connector. In ROSALIE SORRELS: WAY OUT IN IDAHO (Friday, June 8, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT), she and some of her musician friends, including The Divas of Boise, perform in Hailey. Interviews with fellow musicians — Pete Seeger, Nanci Griffith, Terry Garthwaite and others — call her unique in both her singing style and storytelling technique that gives added depth to her songs.

KEVIN KIRK AND ONOMATOPOEIA IN CONCERT (Friday, June 22, at 10:00 p.m. MT/PT) includes a stage-full of Idaho performers from a variety of musical backgrounds with Kevin Kirk at the piano. The group, which comes together periodically, serves up an eclectic high-energy form of jazz that is “practically unboxable,” “rhythmically diverse” and “eminently listenable.” The film captures them in planning and conceiving the concert, rehearsal and during the performance.

Chris Isaak pays a personal tribute to the glory days of record producer Sam Phillips and Phillips’ Sun Studio in Memphis, Tennessee. The singer, songwriter, rock musician and actor musically recaptures the spirit of songs by his heroes, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison and others. The three-act program, taped in February on the AUSTIN CITY LIMITS soundstage, begins with some of Isaak’s own hits, moves on to the Sun Records

tribute, and then wraps up with a combination of both. Joining Isaak for “Trying to Get to You” and “Fujiyama Mama” is “The Queen of Rockabilly,” Wanda Jackson. Other songs include: “Somebody’s

Crying,” “Baby Did a Bad, Bad Thing,” “Ring of Fire,” “Crazy

Arms,” “Miss Pearl,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “Oh, Pretty Woman.”

The program includes the opportunity to pledge support

to Idaho Public Television and obtain tickets for Isaak’s July 20

performance in Eagle. The show also airs on

the PLUS Channel Saturday, June 9, at 8:00/7:00 and 11:30/10:30 p.m. MT/PT.

Two Performance Documentaries Fill Idaho performers Rosalie Sorrels and Kevin Kirk are spotlighted in two specials produced by Idaho Public Television, which are scheduled on Friday evenings in place of national arts show offerings.

This four-part BBC series offers a fresh look at the heroes, triumphs and the tragedies of space exploration and mankind’s quest to understand the universe. Blending restored footage with insightful interviews with the people who were there — including astronauts, family members and journalists — the shows follow the iconic moments of space exploration from the race to get the first man in space to the first steps on the moon. NASA’s triumphs are many, but death and disaster also are part of its legacy as the series reviews moments of both unprecedented achievement and utter tragedy. The series

unveils how, despite many setbacks, the U.S.

astronauts prove that the key element to

exploration is human resourcefulness, in space as well as on the ground. Born of the Cold War, NASA moves stridently from disastrous rocket tests to the successful conclusion of the Mercury and Gemini programs. The accelerated pace and daring of the Apollo program sees NASA master previously unimagined tasks in the attempt to achieve the incredible accomplishment of putting a man on the moon. From the ashes of tragedy on Apollo 1 emerges a determination that puts Apollo 8 into orbit around the moon ahead of schedule. Apollo 9 and 10 each break bold new ground and pave the way for something few dared to believe was possible as astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walk on the moon in July 1969

and return safely to Earth. But with repeated triumphs and new challenges come increasing risk. The suspense of Apollo 13’s famous near-disaster is only a triumphant prelude to darker moments ahead with the

tragedy of the shuttles Challenger and Columbia.

Law and Crime Dramas Air on Sunday Nights

Three main characters with a passion for justice — an 18th century lawyer, and two modern-day detectives — are showcased on Sunday evenings this month. Beginning June 3 at 8:00 p.m. MT/PT, IdahoPTV reprises the first two series of the historical legal drama GARROW’S LAW, which leads into a brand-new third series later this summer. Inspired by the life of pioneering barrister William Garrow, the episodes are based on actual legal cases from the late 18th century. GARROW’S LAW is set in the Old Bailey of Georgian London against a backdrop of corruption and social injustice. Each episode begins with the investigation of a case sourced from the Old Bailey archives — from rape and murder to high treason. Garrow and his associate John Southouse work to uncover the truth as they fight for justice. Andrew Buchan stars as Garrow with Alun Armstrong as Southouse and Lyndsey Marshall as Lady Sarah Hill. The June 3 show is followed by the premiere of VERA at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT. Hidden Depths is the first of four intermittent episodes that star Brenda Blethyn as hard-nosed Detective Inspector Vera Stanhope. Based on the works of crime author Ann Cleeves, VERA’s main character is obsessive about her work and driven by her own demons. If she’s lonely she doesn’t show it and faces the world with caustic wit, guile and courage. Aided by Sgt. Joe Ashworth (David Leon), her trusted and long-suffering colleague and surrogate son, Vera approaches every new case with unparalleled gusto and professionalism. The show also stars Wunmi Mosaku as Detective Constable Holly Lawson and Paul Ritter as forensic pathologist Billy Cartwright. In Hidden Depths, a couple arrives home from a night out in Newcastle to find their son murdered and placed in a bath covered with flowers. A second body is found in a pond, also covered with flowers. In the final three Sundays of June at 9:00 p.m. MT/PT Idaho Public Television rebroadcasts the MASTERPIECE MYSTERY! presentation of Zen, starring Rufus Sewell as suave Roman police detective Aurelio Zen. The series features a trio of cases based on the bestselling novels by British author Michael Dibdin.

CALIFORNIA STATE OF MIND looks at the late Edmund Gerald “Pat” Brown’s odyssey to build a “super state,” raising issues that transcend eras and geographic borders. As the Vietnam War shifts the nation’s consciousness, Brown is caught in the middle of the turbulent 1960s, with the free speech movement in Berkeley, race riots in Watts, and the United Farm Workers movement in the Central Valley. His battle against capital punishment unleashes an international uproar. Still, he enjoys considerable success as governor: Fair Housing Act, Fair Employment Act, Master Plan for Higher Education, highway expansion, and what historians have called the most significant public water project in world history. But it does not last as Hollywood actor and future president Ronald Reagan steps into California’s political arena and promises to sweep all that away. Reagan blames the civil unrest on Brown’s liberal politics, which effectively led to his defeat by Reagan in the 1966 gubernatorial election. Brown’s departure signals an end to an era of expansive liberal government and foreshadows a conservative movement that continues to this day. Those interviewed include former California governors Gray Davis, Pete Wilson and Arnold Schwarzenegger; California political leaders Dianne Feinstein, Nancy Pelosi and Willie Brown; and Jerry Brown, Pat Brown’s son and California’s current governor.

VICAR OF DIBLEY Finale Airs

The independent documentary series with the “point of view” kicks off its 25th season with My Reincarnation (June 21), the story of a Tibetan Buddhist teacher and scholar named Namkhai Norbu Rinpoche and his spiritual conflict with his Italian-born son, Yeshi, who wants to lead the normal life of a Westerner. My Reincarnation follows a long, gentle, sometimes amusing, yet intense struggle between father and son. The father feels enormous responsibility for keeping an ancient spiritual and cultural tradition alive in the face of a 50-year long “diaspora” that threatens Tibetan identity. Namkhai Norbu, along with the Tibetan Buddhist community, is convinced Yeshi is the reincarnation of his own master and destined to take up his father’s work. Yeshi, however, was raised in Italy and feels and looks more like an up-and-coming young businessman than anybody’s spiritual master. Granito: How to Nail a Dictator (June 28) is the season’s second show and tells the story of how a film, aiding a new generation of human rights activists, becomes a granito — a tiny grain of sand — that helps tip the scales of justice in Central America. In a stunning milestone for justice, a Guatemalan court recently charged former dictator Efraín Ríos Montt with genocide for his brutal war against the country’s Mayan people in the 1980s. Pamela Yates’ 1983 documentary, When the Mountains Tremble, provided key evidence for bringing the indictment. Sponsors: Boise Weekly, The Flicks

Science Trek

Enlivens Museum After Hours

On April 13 and 14, Idaho State University was host to 134 students from grades 3-5, who explored hands-on science projects at Science Trek 2012. This overnight adventure has been part of the spring ritual for children in eastern Idaho since 1989 when Idaho Public Television first teamed up with the Idaho Museum of Natural History for a science “slumber party.” Dr. Steven Shropshire started off the 2012 event with a bang — blowing up gas-filled balloons and demonstrating how to blow smoke-rings with a garbage can. Afterward the children split into 14 different smaller groups for deeper explorations of scientific themes like microbiology and robotics. The evening included pizza, a movie and finally bedding down for the night amongst the dinosaur bones and other fossils. Our thanks go out to Rebecca Thorne-Ferrel at the Idaho Museum of Natural History who has led the event for each of its 23 years and to the dozens of volunteers who share their whole night to make it possible.

He discovers that Kibworth goes through the worst famine in European history during the 14th century, and then how two-thirds of the people die in the Black Death. Wood discovers how the Industrial Revolution changed the village and its people forever. Then, he uncovers the secret history of a Victorian village more colorful than even Dickens could have imagined. From World War I battlefields to the bombing of the village in 1940, the series finally moves into the brave new world of “homes for heroes.” Intertwining the local and national narratives, this is a moving and informative picture of one local community through time.
