TradiPonally,IhaveusedaGarminGPS(Zumo550)formymotorcyclenavigaPon.Ithasworkedwellformethepast8years.MostmotorcyclistsIknowwhouseaGPSalsouseadedicatedGarminorTomTomdevice.DuringarecentIAMCGPSClinic(March26,2016)putonbyRonSchinnerer,Ihadan“ahamoment”whenDavidO’Nealdiscussedtheuseofsmartadvices(phonesandtablets)asadedicatedGPSdevice,andhereviewedsomeoftheso[wareappsavailableforthis.

Ithenspentthenext11daysridingwithDavidandtwootherclubmembersonanapproximate3,400mileridetoandfromdoingtheArizonaBDRandpartsoftheUtahBDR.David’sGPSsystem,consisPngofaniPadMiniwithanexternalBlueTooth/GPSdevicetobringGPStotheiPadMiniandaselffabricatedtabletholderwireddirectlytohisbikebaFery,workedverywelltheenPretrip.

InthelastmonthIhavefoundatreasure-troveofinformaPononsmartphoneand

iPadMiniinfabricatedholderbehindDavid’sKTM950windscreen. tabletappsformotorcyclists.Whileitis impracPcaltoreviewalltheseappsinthisarPcle,IwillgiveanoverviewofthistopicandreferspecificallytoafewofwhatIconsiderthemostpromisingandhelpfulapps.PleaseseetheselectedreferencesattheendofthisarPcleforamorecompletelisPngandreviewoftheappsavailable.

FirstofallitisfairtoaskwhyuseyoursmartphoneortabletasaGPSinsteadofadedicatedcommercialGPSunitandwhataretheprosandcons?GarminandTomTommaketheonlymotorcyclespecificGPSs(GarminZumoseriesandTomTomRider),andtheyarepricey-anywherefrom$500.00to$900.00each.[1-2]Eventhehandhelddevicescommonlyusedbymotorcyclists(GarminGPSMAP64andMontanaseries)runbetween$250.00and$600.00each.[3]Themapsanddockingdevicesaresoldseparate.AsdedicatedGPSs,theseunitsworkwellallowingyoutocreateroutesandwaypointsonthedeviceandinBaseCamp(thelaptop/desktopso[wareprogramforGarmin)andtotransferroutes,waypointsandtrackstoandfromthedevice.TheupperendGarminZumosandTomTomRiderallowturn-by-turnaudionavigaPonprompts,weatherandtrafficalerts,wirelessinterfacewithyoursmartphoneandinterfacewithyourmusicifyouhaveaBlueToothhelmetintercom.Thehandhelddevicesaremuchmorelimited.

IfyouaregoingtouseasmartphoneortabletasyourmotorcycleGPS,itisbeFertohaveadedicatedunitratherthanusingyourcurrentsmartphone.AnoldermodelsmartphoneortabletthatwillfuncPonfineasadedicatedGPScostsfrom$50.00to$100.00fromeBayorAmazon.AtabletwithcellularfuncPonhasabuilt-inGPSsoyouwillnotneedtoconnectanexternalBlueToothGPSdevicetoit.AnseparateexternalBlueToothGPSdevicesellsfor$60.00to$100.00.WhenusedasadedicatedGPS,youdonotneedtohavecellularserviceonthesmartphoneortablet;youonlyneedaccesstoitsinternalGPSthatworkswithoutWiFi,cellularconnecPonoraccruinganychargesforitsuse.


ThescreenonasmartphoneisaslargeorlargerthanthoseoftheupperendGarminandTomTomGPSs.AsmarttabletscreenisseveralPmeslarger.ThesmartphoneandtabletscreensarealsobrighterandeasiertoreadthantheGarminandTomTomGPSscreens,andtheyalloutperformthehandheldGarminGPSdeviceswiththeexcepPonoftheMontanathathassimilarscreensizeandbrightnesstoanoldermodeliPhone.

Thesmartphoneortabletwillneedtobesecuredtothemotorcyclehandlebarorcockpitbehindthewindscreen Poweredprotec=ve mountforiPhone.

(preferablyinaruggedprotecPveandwaterproofcase)andconnectedtoaUSBpowersourcetobepoweredallthePme.TheinternalbaFerylifeforsmartphonesandtablets isinsufficientwithoutaconstantpowersource.[4-6]

Onedrawbackofthesmartphonesandtabletsisthat glovesdonotworkonatouchscreen.Therearesome specializedmotorcycleglovesforthispurpose,butan

Ramsecuresmarttabletmount. alternaPveforanyexisPnggloveistouseAnygloveor NanoPpstreatmentthatworkswellonleatherand

GalileoOfflineMaps-GalileoOfflineMapsisamapbrowsingappyoucanuseoffline.Itmakeslifeeasier,whentravelingwithoutanyInternetconnecPon,becauseyoucanusepreviouslysavedofflinemapsonyourmobileiOSdevice.Detailedandeasy-to-useofflinevectormapsbasedonOpenStreetMapdataareavailabletodownloadwithintheapp.[9-10]Galileodoesn’tofferanyrouPngorturnbyturndirecPons.ItdoesofferyoutheabilitytorecordyourGPStracksforanother$1.99InApppurchase.Thiscouldcomeinhandyifyouaregeotaggingandneedthe

tracktosyncwithyourgeotaggingso[ware.Basically,thisisahandyappthatletsyoucachemapsandusethemoffline.

OsmAndOfflineMobileMaps&NavigaCon-OsmAndworkstotallyoffline(noroamingchargeswhenyouareabroad)butalsohasa(fast)onlineopPon.Itgivesturn-by-turnvoiceguidanceandannouncestrafficwarningslikestopsigns,pedestriancrosswalks,orwhenyouareexceedingthespeedlimit.ItgivesopPonallaneguidance,streetnamedisplay,andesPmatedPmeofarrival,anditsupportsintermediatepointsonyouriPnerary.ItalsosupportsautomaPcre-rouPngwheneveryoudeviatefromtheroute.Youcansearchforplacesbyaddress,bytype

“Holdupasec’,”IyellthroughmyhelmetforthethirdPme.MyGPSunitkeepslockingup.Ihavetostop,unscrewthebackandpullthebaFeriestogetitworkingagain.

Thatwasacoupleyearsago,thelastPmeIusedapurpose-builtGPSunit.I’msureyou’venoPcedthesamethingIdidwhenIwenttoreplaceit:thespeed,displayqualityandcostofastandardmobiledevice(AndroidoriOS)isnowvastlybeFerthantheruggedizedGPSunitsweusedtocarry.WherebeforeIhadagrainytwoinchscreenthatwascumbersometonavigate,InowseemytrailopPonsonasharpandfluidseveninchscreen.

SosoldwasIontheobvioussuperiorityofthenewtechnologythatI’verecentlyjoinedthecompanythatcreatestheso[wareI’dbeenusing,GaiaGPS.SomeofyouprobablysawmypostaboutitinourFacebookgroup.Withthatbackground,IhopeIcanofferPpstoevaluateyourexisPngphoneortabletasyouradventureGPSdevice.

WILLITWORKWITHOUTACELLSIGNAL?

Yes.GaiaandothernavigaPonappsusetheGPSchipinsidemosteverymobiledevice.YoucanputyourphoneintoairplanemodeifyouwishtosavebaFery.TheGoogletabletIusehasnocellularconnecPvitybutsPlltracksGPSjustfineinIdaho’sbackcountry.


WHATABOUTRAINANDWRECKS?

IhavehadafewgoodtumblesonmyKTMsincemounPngthetablet.Onlyoncediditgoflying(Ithinkabranchcaughtthemount)andeventhenitwasfine.Andrainiseasilydealtwith.ThesemoderngadgetsarealreadysealedpreFywell.Theycantakesomeincidentalsplashes.ButifIseeraincomingIslipitintoanalmostpurpose-fitZiplocandpopitbackintotheholder.Ifyou’resoinclined,youcouldinsteadgetoneofthemanyruggedcasesavailableformobiledevices.

WHYNOTJUSTUSEGOOGLEMAPSORSIMILARONMYPHONE?

Areyouintherightclub?Google’smapsdon’thavedirttrails.GoogleEarthcanbehandyforrouteresearchbutontheride,you’rebeFerservedwithmapsthatshowtrails,oldroadsandelevaPonlines,withaerialviewsasanopPon.Gaiahasmanymapstochoosefrom.YoucanreviewthemwhileyourdeviceisonlinethentouchabuFontodownloadanyyouwantforofflineuseonyourride.IwasontheridgeaboveFiddlerFlatonceandrealizedIdidn’thaveamapIwanted.Iwasabletogetjustenoughsignaltodownloadthemap.ItwaspreFyneattodothat.Hereareafewmapexamples:

UsingasmallcomputerasyourGPSunitbringsmanyadvantages.PhotosyoutakewithinGaiaandothermapappsareautomaPcallygeocoded,whichistosay,placedonyourmap.Andthosephotos,alongwithtracksand


waypointsyourecord,areopPonallyuploadedtotheGaiawebsiteasabackupormeansofsharingwithothers—yourchoice.

MakingtheMostoftheTimeIHad-My2015ChallengeAdventurebyJimJorgensen

Lastyear’schallengeendedupbeingabitofawhirlwindforme.Myridingseasonbeganmuchdifferentlythanitended.MyGoalwastohitGoldlevelwhichIhadnotachievedyet.IhadplannedallyeartoridetheIdahoBackCountryDiscoveryRouteandpickupanumberofchallengesitesalongtheway.IspentthewinterandspringmePculouslyplanningmyroute,mappingouttheIBDRwithwhereIwouldstopeachday,whatdetoursIwouldhavetomaketopickupchallengesitesandwhatchallengesitesIwouldcatchonthewaytothebeginningoftherouteandonmyroutehome.WiththerouteIhadplannedandthePmeoffworkIhadsetaside,IwaslookingforwardtoanamazingadventurefullofplacesthatIhadneverbeenandseveralchallengesitecheck-ins.

Unfortunately,duetoaverybusysummer,IwasnotabletotakethePmeoffworkunPltheendofAugust.IwatcheddisappoinPnglyasforestfirea[erforestfirebeganinnorthernIdaho.IwatchedthefirescloselytoseeifitwaspossibletosPllridemydesiredroute,buta[erwatchingtheMagruderCorridorandtheLoloMotorwaybeingshutdownandnearlytheenPrenorthernhalfoftheIBDRclosed,IcametotherealizaPonthattheIdahoBackCountryDiscoveryRoutewasnotgoingtohappenformein2015.

Nowwhat?ItisnowNearlySeptemberandIhaveonly5challengesitesundermybelt.TheonlychallengesitesthatIhadpickedupatthispointweretheeasyonesthatIcouldgettofrommyhouseonaSaturdaya[ernoon.MygoalofGoldseemednearlyoutofreach.

IsatinmyofficestaringatanIdahomapthatIhaveonthewall.ItisoneofthemapsIuseforplanning,anditwascoveredwithliFlesPckynotesaFachedtothechallengesitesIwasplanningtovisitonmytrip.IrealizedthatifIwasgoingtoachievemygoalofgold,IhadtocompletelyrethinkhowIwasgoingtoaccomplishit.IbeganpuwngsPckynotesuponallofthechallengesitelocaPonsonthemap.LaborDaywasinaweek.IhadathreedayweekendthatIneededtomakethemostof.

WiththefiresgoingonupnorthIturnedmyaFenPoneast.Slowlybutsurelyaroutestartedtocometogether.Ihadthreedaystohitasmanychallengesitesaspossible,andIwasgoingtodojustthat.Ialwayssetmygoalshighandmakeadjustmentsalongtheway.TherouteIputtogetherconsistedof25sites.Lookingatthemapitseemeddoable,butvisiPng25IdahocounPesinthreedaysonmySuzukiDR650seemedaliFleaggressive;whynotgiveitatry?

IconPnuedplanningforthenextfewdaysandbeganpuwngmygearandequipmenttogether.ThisyearwouldbealiFledifferentthanthepreviousyear.In2014IrodeaSuzukiDR350,whichIsoonlearnedwasnotthebestonthehighway.Itwasagreatbike.ItdideverythingIaskedofitandwasperfectforthe2014challengethatinvolvedsometoughroutestolakesandfirelook-outs.ThisyearIwouldberidingmynew-to-meSuzukiDR650.LookingattherouteIplanned,IknewIwouldbegratefulforthebiggerbikevisiPng25counPesinthreedays—Iwasgoingtobetearingupawholelotofblack-top.


OtherequipmentthisyearthatIdidnothavethepreviousyearwasaGarmin62sGPS,aRAMMountformyphone,panniers,beFerridinggearandahelmetwithBluetoothcommunicaPon.ThankstoDanDriscoll,whowaskindenoughtocoachmeonrouteplanning,IwasabletoplanmyrouteinGarminBasecampanddownloadittomyGPS.ThissoonprovedtobeabigPmesaveronthetripbecauseIdidnothavetostopandpulloutamapateveryintersecPon.AsanexperimentandjusttokeepthingsinteresPng,IexperimentedwithaGPSappformysmartphonecalledLocusPro.IdownloadedmyrouteintothephoneappsothatalongthewayIcoulddoaside-by-sidecomparisonoftheappvs.theGarmin62sGPS.

Day1:MytripstartedoffearlySaturdaymorning.Itwasrainyandcold.Ipulledintomyfirstchallengesite,PickleBuFeinCanyonCounty,wetandfreezing.BythePmeIgottomysecondsite,theOwyheeCountyCourthouseinMurphy,Iwasnearcallingitoffandtryingagainanotherday;butthiswasa3dayweekend,andthosedon’tcomearoundveryo[enforme.ThedayconPnuedtobeabitmiserable.Ile[Fairfield,andthewindbegantoblow.MyridetoHaileyIdahowasspentleaningmybikeatanangleintothewind,butIdiligentlyworkedmywayfromsitetosite,passingplaceslikeCratersoftheMoonandArco,Idaho,eventuallyendingupinIdahoFallsforthenightvisiPngatotalof9sitesfortheday.Ihadplannedoncamping,buta[ersuchacold,miserableday,IdecidedahotelroomsoundedmuchbeFer.ThankgoodnessforPriceline!

Day2:MyplanwastomakeittoacoupleofchallengesitesonmywaytoDuboisandarriveinDuboisabout9:00sothatIcouldaFendchurch.WhileaFendingchurchthere,IwasaskedaboutwhereIwasgoingandwhatIwasdoing.IwastoldbylocalsthatIabsolutelyhadtoridethe“RedRoad”toSt.Anthony.ThathadnotbeenthedirecPonIwasheaded;butIwasthere,andIdidnotwanttomissanopportunity.TheRedRoadendedupbeingawonderfulridethroughbeauPfulcountry.ItookmerightpasttheSt.AnthonySandDunes,andIendedupinSt.AntonyattheCourthouse,oneofthechallengesites.

Therestofday2tookmetoseveralotheramazingchallengesitesandthroughsomebeauPfulcountryincludingtheTetonDamDisastersite,TetonCountywithawonderfulviewoftheTetons,BearLake,PalisadeReservoir,andmanyothers.IendedupstayingthatnightatmySistershouseinLewistonUtah,complePngthedaywith8sitesvisited.Itwasanamazingday.

Day3:MythirddayofthetripstartedearlyandtookmetothetownofMallad,Idaho.Mywife’sfamilyhasmuchhistoryinthistown.Backinthedayhergrandfather,KeithBudge,hadahoneyfactorythereandwasveryprominentinthecommunity.Itookafewhourstheretovisittheoldhoneyfactorysiteandthegravesofhergrandparents,andIwasabletotakeseveralpicturesthatmywifeandherfamilyaswellasourchildrenenjoyed.

FromMalladImademywaytoAmericanFalls.IdidnotwanttotakefreewaysoIrodebackroads,andthisdriveendedupbeingoneofmyfavoritesofthetrip.IheadedwestoutofMalladonHwy38andturnednorthonArbonValleyRoad.ThiswasagreatdrivethroughsomeIdahocountrythatIhadneverbeforevisited.FromAmericanFallsIzigzaggedmywaythroughseveralothercounPespickingupchallengesitesalongtheway.Toavoidthefreewayworkingmywayhome,IroadoldHwy30toKingHill,connectedwithHwy71throughBruneau,andmademywaybacktogoodoldMiddletonIdaho.Thedayendedlate,butIgotto9moresites!

AfewthingsIlearnedalongtheway:

1.WhetheritisaGarminorasmartphoneApp,aGPSisanincredibletoolthatsavedmeatonofPmeonthistrip.WiththeexcepPonofittryingtosendmedownaroadthatwasmoreofatwotrackthroughafarmer’sfield,ittookmeeverywhereIneededtogo.Init’sdefensethough,itwasaroad,justnotoneIthoughtIshouldtake.

2.IneedabeFerwindscreenifIamevergoingtodothismuchroadagain.BythePmeIgothomethebuffePngfromthewindhadmecompletelyexhausted.

3.TheSuzukiDR650isaverycapablebike.Iamveryhappywithmypurchase.SofarithasdoneeverythingIhaveaskedofit.

4.Waterproofgearisawesome.

5.Heatedgripsaremyfavoritefarkle.


Overallthetripwasamazing.IwasPred,sore,chilled,windblownandcompletelyfilledwithhappinessandsaPsfacPon.AlthoughitwasnotthetripIhadplannedforallyear,itendedupbeingagreattripfullofwonderfulexperiencesandmemories.IexceededmygoalbyvisiPng26sitesthatweekendgoingformnothingtothegoldawardinthreedays.Whatanadventure!
