Toby Holman
With the advent of blogging… young people are just as likely to seek feedback from their peers and strangers as they are their parents and teachers.
‘Their Space’ Education for a Digital Age
Where has ICT come from?
• Used rarely in the classroom
• Used often at home

Has education been slow to take up?
Finding the facts
Why ICT in education?
• Although somewhat late on the take up, education is now an industry at the forefront of development
• Obvious use / potential
• Less obvious uses / potential
The past 10 years…
• The speed of computers has risen
• The cost of computers has fallen
• The skills of users has increased
• Increased access
The next 10 years…
• The speed of computers will continue to rise
• The cost of computers is likely to settle
• The skills of users will continue to rise
• Portability
• Increased access
• Moving from ‘taught’ to ‘investigative’
Suppliers (teachers)
• Important that teachers know and appreciate how students use ICT today
• The big shift in the next few years will be the shift from
TEACHER TO PUPIL

The SLT challenge
• ICT use can become like the SAS
• It is important therefore to:
– seek clear goals for ICT
– ask for clarification
– measure the impact
– manage effective use across the school
– support and advise
– be aware of Government legislation
The SLT challenge II
• Should we embrace pupils PLN?
• If so, how? (when many of the sites are blocked)
• What stops us opening these sites up?
TASK
The SLT challenge III
• The role of ICT (and importance thereof) will continue to rise
• SLT must keep abreast of key developments
• The school need to address the needs of the user
Consumer technology
Technology will infiltrate every aspect of our lives – the mobile phone will become a gateway to global communications, and link seamlessly to the web and every screen in homes and offices. Supermarkets will restock your internet-connected fridge automatically. Expect a pervasive sense of being watched – probably not by government, but by big corporations.
Matt Warman, DT technology editor
Internet
There are now three times more mobile phone subscribers than internet users. In the decade ahead, mobile and web will collide to fulfil the promise of technology: helping people help themselves. The open exchange of information will lead to a more informed, engaged, and more empathetic global citizenry.
