I Believe, Therefore I Am

We are living in a crisis of faith. Young

millennials prefer to be atheists; some

Christian denominations are disintegrating

while others are accommodating themselves

to the culture. Others want proof or nothing

at all and prefer to trust in science the

limited human intellect. In today's Gospel,

Thomas did not see the risen Christ and did

not believe. But the pattern goes back to

Adam and Eve who were told that they would surely die if

they eat from the tree of knowledge. They wanted proof

which resulted in sin, death and corruption which passed

on to the human race. It took 9 plagues and the death of his

first-born to convince pharaoh that Moses was sent from

God. Even Moses and those with him doubted God and

never entered the Promised Land.

God never wants us to believe without proof, or obey

without explanation. That's why He performs mighty works

through his holy ones, servants and prophets who are

weak men in order to prove His might. Yet, the apostles,

the people closest to Christ did not perceive Him. Peter did

not believe the words of the myrrh-bearing women and

ran to the empty tomb to see for himself. The disciples at

Emmaus did not recognize the risen Christ until the

breaking of the bread.

We experience with our senses and put our faith in them.

If we have no faith and refuse to believe except in the

material world, then it is difficult to trust in God with

closed eyes. As long as we believe that man is (cont. on pg. 3) (prod. na stor. 3)

the center of everything, we won't see God and the works

of His hand in the world. We become insensitive to Him

and His great love and ignore Him as if He never existed.

We want Him out of our schools, our daily lives; we don't

pray anymore and prefer other things such as entertainment

to church. We pursue petty things instead of first seeking

the Kingdom of God.

The Lord respects our freedom and is not offended by

our mistrust. He calls us like Thomas to; "Put your finger

here, and see my hands, and put out your hand and

place it in my side. Do not be unbelieving, but

believing." It is not a blind faith, but a belief that goes

from the mind to the heart and the cloud of witnesses that

shout into the world the Good News of our redemption in

Jesus Christ. We see what the world has become and that

it is easier to trust God than man. Man has failed us, God

does not fail us. God has always acted in our best interest,

even to sacrificing Himself for us.

Jesus said to Thomas; "Have you believed because you

have seen me? Blessed are those who have not seen yet

believe." Believe because we have seen the Lord through

the eyes of the Myrrh Bearing women. Believe because we

have entered the empty tomb with Peter. Believe because

we have touched his wounds with Thomas' hand. Believe

because we built our churches on graves of the Martyrs that

died proclaiming the Resurrection. Believe because we

have the Scriptures and His words give life. Believe for the

Resurrection is the only thing that matters. Rejoice in the

truth of the Resurrection as the greatest mystery in the

history of mankind and don't try to explain with limited

secular human knowledge. Believe that Christ is risen!

Indeed He is risen!
