The Code for Sustainable Homes, BREEAM, BRE Green Guide & BES 6001

Natural Resources• We operate some of the most energy efficient factories in Europe with

proven energy reduction year-on-year.

• On average our products contain 12% re-cycled secondary or waste

material, extending the use of valuable clay resources.

• Water, a key commodity in brickmaking, is recovered and re-cycled

wherever possible. Over 40% of all water used is recovered water.

• All process waste up to the kiln-firing stage is re-cycled.

• 13.6MW of electricity is generated from Landfill gas on our sites,

enough to power 17,000 homes.

• Raw materials are sourced responsibly, with full restoration of our clay

extraction sites, which are often used for the creation of local amenities.

The code for Sustainable Homes was introduced to create a step-change in sustainable

homes building practice.

Within the code, building materials and their environmental impact constitute one

of the design categories against which the sustainability of a house is measured.

BREEAM is an environmental assessment method by which new buildings are assessed

against set criteria providing an overall score. Materials for these assessments are

sourced through information obtained from BRE’s “Green Guide”. External wall

specifications, when assessed in conjunction with this guide, are given a points rating

from “A+” to “E”. All brick cladding specifications listed in the Green Guide achieve

the highest (A+) rating.

Being certified under BES 6001, using Ibstock products with a “Very Good” rating,

generates extra points to an assessment under the Code for Sustainable Homes.

The Environment• All our manufacturing units source their materials responsibly and are

certified to BES 6001.

• All our manufacturing units are independently verified and registered

with CICS to ISO 14001, the International Environmental Standard and

ISO 9001, the International Quality Standard.

• Our bricks, on average, travel only 62 miles reducing traffic congestion,

vehicle emissions and fuel usage.

• We undertake pro-active research in environmental technology which

has included fluorine reduction at our Leicester factory.

• We have on-going continuous improvement programmes at all our

factories with benchmarking of key performance improvement indicators.

• We are the first brickmaker to achieve ISO 50001, the new standard for

energy management.

Despite legal protection their numbers are

declining. Since Roman times they have made

their homes in traditional man-made buildings.

Project: St Mary’s School, Longbenton, Newcastle-upon-Tyne

Products: Elementix® Express Natural Cream & Leicester Multi Cream Stock

Simon Hatcher, who was the project architect at Parsons

Brinckerhoff, decided early in the project that brick would

form the majority of the external facades, with linear

fenestration and a very limited palette of colours and

materials to create a simple but imposing overall appearance.

Ibstock’s Elementix rainscreen cladding system was selected to clad the

main sports hall at the front of the building and the 6th form area at the

rear. The cost-effective aluminium frame system, clad with large format

brick tiles, provides a durable weatherproof finish that contrasts with the

traditional format brickwork. Elementix Express Natural Cream was chosen,

as the tile colour exactly matched the subtle cream finish of the Leicester

Multi Cream Stock used throughout the front and rear of the main

structure, creating an almost monochromatic colour scheme.

Lubna Chowdhary was commissioned to create artworks

that would bring an identity to the Orchard Park estate in

Cambridge and become an aid to orientation within it.

Lubna comments: “Three areas within the estate were re-landscaped

involving the creation of a range of glazed seating areas based on

seed forms, reflecting the connection with the original land-use

together with complementary paving and planting schemes. The seats,

positioned centrally within the open garden spaces, are larger scale and

more accommodating than conventional park benches with their curved

lines stimulating community interaction”.

Wanting to use a rainscreen cladding effect to create an

innovative and contemporary design, architects RPS chose

Fireborn large format clay blocks on Aston Brain Centre at

Aston University, Birmingham, to create the effect whilst

keeping within budget constraints.

Fireborn Natural Blue and Fireborn Natural Cream in 440 x 215mm units

were used. Because of the complexity of the project, Ibstock’s Contract

Management Service worked closely with both the architect and contractor

throughout the design and build process to ensure the products were

delivered efficiently and on time. The use of Fireborn has become increasingly

popular on public buildings due to its ability to create a modern contemporary

finish without compromising durability.

a definitive line in architecture

Oak Farm, located in the Liverpool suburb of Allerton, has

been further extended to add additional accommodation and

a study. Following many discussions between the Liverpool

Planning Authority and architects shedkm, the Linear Natural

Blue was chosen to provide a neutral backdrop to the local

sandstone used on the original farmhouse buildings.

Range extendedIbstock’s new Linear range now offers a much wider choice of individual products – giving architects

and specifiers even more options for creating striking and distinctive finishes for their buildings. The

new range brings together more than 100 individual products in lengths from 290mm up to 490mm

in 50mm and 65mm height options. Two new brick textures, Impression and Vestige have been

added, with specifiers having the flexibility to blend bricks from across the range. In addition to these

new extensions, it is now possible to create a bespoke Linear blend in either a range of different

products or sizes, enabling the architect to explore even more innovative and creative designs in this

contemporary product.

Glazed finishes

The new Ibstock Linear range now includes clay,

ceramic glazed, and stone finished products.

As you would expect, in traditional clay you can

choose from all of our fantastic brick finishes in

an expanded range of colours and textures.

Our new stone finish products from Forticrete®

come in 4 different finishes - Shot Blasted,

Splitface, Burnished Venezia™ and Polished

Florentine® and a wide range of colours,

providing a further 20+ options to choose from.

Glazed bricks are available in a further

4 finishes of Two Tone, Halo, Smooth

Glazed and Frosted Glazed. Almost any

RAL colour can be chosen.

BrickShield® Adhesive Mortar is then applied to the surface of the Rockwool® Façade Ultra. BrickShield® Natural Clay Brick Slips are laid onto the adhesive mortar, keeping to line and level for an even appearance.

BrickShield® Spacers can be used temporarily until the mortar sets.

BrickShield® Special-shaped Clay Brick Slips are available for corners and reveals.

The joints between the slips are finished with BrickShield® BrickPoint for a beautiful brick finish.

What is BrickShield®?Ideal for both new build applications and for upgrading the thermal performance

and appearance of old solid wall homes, BrickShield combines high-performance

Rockwool thermal insulation with an Ibstock brick finish in a single system.

Insulation boards are simply bonded and then mechanically fixed to the exterior

face of the wall using BrickShield Adhesive Mortar and BrickShield Insulating Wall

Anchors. The wall is then finished with Ibstock BrickShield Natural Clay Brick Slips

site bonded with BrickShield Adhesive Mortar. Once set, the wall is pointed with

BrickShield Brickpoint.

The installation process is quick and involves minimal disruption for the residents

who can remain in their homes throughout the work. Full contractor training and

support is available throughout the project. With ‘U’ values attainable in excess

of 0.25 Wm2k as well as a 60 year brick slip durability warranty, BrickShield is the

perfect upgrading solution.

For a perfect match virtually any brick within the Ibstock range can be used. In

addition, a range of traditional decorative dentil details, quoins and arches are

available for use with the BrickShield system to help capture the character of the

original architecture.

Hargood Close, a supported housing scheme of mixed

residential units in Colchester, is arranged around two

landscaped courtyards which were inspired by the several

19th Century almshouses found in this part of Essex.

Highly textured and beautifully crafted brickwork panels give rhythm,

scale and expression to the buildings. The panels feature a projecting

bond on some elevations, whilst on the upper level of the cloisters they

are formed of a perforated bond that provides a dappled light as well

as ventilation. Constanze Leibrock of architects Proctor & Matthews

comments: “The Parham Red Stock brick was chosen partly to reflect

the surrounding local context and partly due to its warm vibrant colour

which enhances the welcoming atmosphere of the development”.

Tudor Grange Academy is characterised by its architectural

geometry and by the articulation and relief of the brick

envelope, for which Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios utilised

Ibstock Coleridge Yellow Multi in a classic stretcher bond

to provide a ranged tone, colour and richness.

“The south eastern facade, a clear architectural statement prominently

positioned at the new principle entrance, rises through three storeys

and is intended as a structural reflection of the vision of the Academy.

Here, textured relief is created through the sculptural coursing of

brickwork, using an adapted Flemish bond. At first and second floor

level, headers project further through the horizontal to a maximum at

the angle to create dynamic shadowing and add drama to the wing”

Architects at Allford Hall Monaghan Morris were

looking to incorporate pattern and texture to provide

relief and interest on the brick facades.

Working closely with Ibstock, this was achieved, using Cheddar Brown bricks,

by introducing a cant brick every fourth brick in the horizontal coursing with

the cant stepping over one and a half bricks each vertical course. Special

shaped bricks were designed to form the base of the openings resulting in a

dappled pattern across the façade

The new Bluebell Views student accommodation

project at Warwick University is located in a sensitive

site on the edge of the campus. Each of the four

residential blocks, designed and constructed to a

BREEAM excellent standard, has four flats per level,

split into two wings, and linked by a glazed link bridge.

The concept was for these buildings to sit gracefully in the landscape, touching

the ground lightly. This is reflected in the external wall finish. The Himley Ash

Grey bricks, produced using local clay, allows the buildings and the ground to

be linked in a holistic way.

Staffordshire Slate Blue Smooth was the ideal choice of

brick to achieve the desired aesthetic and robust qualities

the architects were aiming for at Bideford College.

Steven Western of architects NPS Group, Exeter comments: “The subtle pattern

and bold tone of the blue bricks provide a striking contrast with the variety of

vibrant coloured rendered panels featured on the facades. The bricks also work

well as a backdrop to the hard and soft landscape, accentuating the natural hues

of foliage and flowers whilst providing a versatile and attractive match that is

able to compliment the ever changing shade and appearance of natural larch

cladding as it weathers in both wet and dry conditions.

The boldness of the brick surface has been tempered with the extensive use of

Special Shaped Bricks - a quick guide

At the core of the Caplock® system is a simple idea:

A specially designed two metre PVC-u extrusion is held in

place on each side by a course of bricks, leaving the upper

flanges proud of the wall.

After a bed of mortar is laid, special Caplock® capping or

coping bricks, incorporating an integral keyway, can then be

locked into place by simply bedding the unit onto the PVC-u

extrusion and mortar bed.

Its flanges firmly lock into position in the keyway, ensuring

both alignment and positive location.

The resulting capping or coping course forms a virtually

immovable mass and remains locked in place even in the

event of mortar problems.

The benefits of the Caplock® system are:

Plinth bricks have been used for many years in both commercial and domestic buildings. Illustrated

along with British Standard Specials are Ibstock’s own substantial range of specials with extra faces

and shapes to aid bonding. Included in this is our own through-the-wall plinth, (I.PL.15.1), which

removes the requirement for cut bricks to make up the wall thickness (see page 189).

Dimension A has been selected to be close to 215mm

(work size of standard brick) whilst giving whole or half

numbers of units in quadrants with convex face radii of

multiples of 225mm (co-ordinating size of standard brick)

The spiral brick is an Ibstock innovation to produce decorative columns and chimneys.

This unique design is a very simple shape which allows you to create complex spirals with just one standard special.

The spirals can follow a clockwise or anti-clockwise pattern or cross over, yet all are laid with a single, straight plumb line down the perpendicular joints.

Spiral BricksThe Ibstock Universal Joint range is an innovative way of forming returns and angles which has now become an established detail for variable angles through 180˚ making a decorative and practical solution to all designs.

The Universal Joint is available in two formats: Easyangle® and a two piece option. The two piece option gives a more pristine finish, whilst the one piece reduces complexity on site and is very cost effective. Both options are shown.

We also offer a unique Ibstock Universal Joint stop special, the ‘Elephants Foot’, which can be used to give both a functional and decorative appeal to corners.

A test method has been developed involving a 24

hour soak in water. A five hour boil test is used for

Engineering and DPC (damp proof course) bricks.

10 individual bricks are measured and the mean value for the size is calculated. The mean categories (T) under BS EN 771-1 for bricks with a nominal size of 215mm in length are:

Product Standards & CE MarkingThe harmonisation of the European market for building materials and the requirements of the Construction Products

Regulations affect all UK specifiers, users and manufacturers alike.

The national product standard for clay facing bricks is BS EN 771-1. By law products covered by a harmonised European standard such as this must carry CE Marking indicating they

conform to the standard and their performance has been declared. Product NOT covered by a harmonised European Standard must NOT carry CE Marking. Declarations of performance

(DoPs) and lists of products which must and must not be CE Marked can be found on Ibstock’s Declaration of Performance website www.ibstock-ce.com.
