APRIL 2018 VOLUME 21 ISSUE 2 MOHAWK VALLEY CHAPTER NEWS & NOTES RETIRED PUBLIC EMPLOYEES ASSOCIATION, INC. IN LOVING MEMORY DIANE LANGE 1938-2018 Diane was born September 22, 1938 in Utica, NY, the daughter of Joseph and Helen (Dombrowski) Gaspa. She was a graduate of Utica Free Academy. On May 3, 1958 she married Paul D. Lange, a union of 59 years. They had three children and seven grandchildren, who were all the love of her life. Diane was initially employed by Utica Catholic Academy as an assistant gym teacher and synchronized swimming coach. In 1977 she was hired as Director of Health, Recreation, and Swimming at the Utica YWCA, which is where I first met her. I would bring our children from Crane Hill, Marcy Psychiatric Center, to the YWCA for their winter swimming program. Whether lifeguarding or just assisting, she was always there for me. She enrolled in the Recreation Program at Mohawk Valley Community College and once again our paths crossed when she took a course I was teaching in the Program. Diane was an honors student and graduated with a degree in Recreation Leadership. Diane finalized her working career with the Oneida County Office of the Aging. She volun- teered for Health Friends CNY, helping the elderly obtain the medications they needed; the Stanley Theater and Herkimer Home. In addition to her hours of volunteering, she enjoyed family activities such as camping (only with a tent), backpacking, sailing, cross-country skiing, antiquing, mountain climbing, traveling and playing cards. In addition to being a local artist, Diane enjoyed arts, crafts, running the Boilermaker, gar- dening, and Sudoku. You name it and she was willing to give it a try. Once again our paths crossed when she became a member of the Mohawk Valley Chapter’s Steering Committee as Secretary, then Assistant Secretary and finally Nominating Chair and Co-Coordinator of “Make a Difference Day” with Treasurer MaryAnn Zogby. Diane was not only loved by her family but by her friends and fellow associates as well. We enjoyed her enthusiasm and dedication. She will truly be missed. TINA FAHRINGER, CHAPTER CHAIR DIANE LANGE

THE TATTOO TRADITION The term "tattoo" derives from the cries of the 17TH & 18TH century Low Country

innkeepers in Scotland, who, as the fifes and drums of the local regiment signaled a

return to quarters would cry, “Doe den tap toe!” (meaning “turn off the taps”!)

The sound of the "taps" caused the innkeepers customers to depart and return to

their barracks. The word "tattoo" evolved over time and refers to what developed as a

ceremonial performance of military music by massed bands today.

The Virginia International Tattoo incorporates groups from around the world

including acrobats, choral groups and precision military drill teams.

“Make a Difference Day” is that special day, always on the 4TH Sat-urday in October, when volunteers around the world roll up their sleeves to help others. Through the combined efforts of our former Nominating Chair and friend, the late DIANE LANGE and Treasurer MARYANN ZOGBY, we are in our 5TH year of this special event. It was through Diane’s affiliation with our local YWCA that she had suggested “Hall House” as this year’s recipient. Specific needs are toiletries for women and children, new socks,

underwear and pajamas for children up to age 15. Monetary donations will be accepted in memory of Diane. All donations can be made at our next three Membership Meetings. Monetary donations may also be sent to:
