Expanding our reach is a central theme inKamehameha Schools’ StrategicImplementation Plan. Much of the work wewill do in coming years will be collaborative –within communities and standing facilities.

Yet, collaborative expansion will notdetract us from our existing programs, becauseour Strategic Implementation Plan mandates

us to maintain and strengthen our commitment to existingquality campus-based programs on our three campuses.

In this issue of I Mua, you will have an opportunity explorethe progress of Kamehameha’s expanding services on our MauiCampus; its new facilities, academic approaches, and you’ll meetMaui Headmaster Dr. Rodney Chamberlain.

Expanding earlier plans from K-8 to committing to full K-12 programs at our Maui and Hawaiÿi campuses came indirect response to stakeholder input – received during statewidecommunity meetings begun in 1999 – that sought increasedaccess to a quality K-12 education for Hawaiian children.

We are learning about additional benefits our quality K-12campus-based programs are bringing into the Kamehamehasystem:

First, in the long term, as our Maui and Hawaiÿi K-12campuses begin to increasingly accommodate their own regionalneeds, additional places will open up at Kapälama for studentsfrom Oÿahu, Kauaÿi, Molokaÿi and Länaÿi .

Second, just as we’d hoped, our new campuses arebecoming dynamic centers for our Maui and Hawaiÿi Hawaiiancommunities. Already true at Kapälama – where we hostnumerous KS affiliated group activities and classes throughoutthe year – both Maui and Hawaiÿi campuses are increasinglysignificant in the social, cultural and educational lives of ourneighbor island communities.

This is as it should be. And, with Kamehameha’s continued commitment to

serving more people of Hawaiian ancestry through qualityeducational programs on Maui, Hawaiÿi and at Kapälama – thisis as it will be.

Governor Signs Two LegislativeBills Important to KS Two legislative bills supportedby Kamehameha Schools havebeen signed into law by Gov.Ben Cayetano. Kamehamehawas instrumental in draftingand advocating passage of bothof the bills, which reflect goalscontained in KS’ Strategic

Implementation Plan.SB 2662 allows nonprofit

organizations to collaboratewith the Department ofEducation to manage publicschools, bringing to the tablenew educational expertise incurriculum development, edu-cational and cultural materials,equipment, professional devel-opment support and additionalfunding. The bill’s approvalmeans Kamehameha will nowmove forward with the stepsnecessary to support a nonprof-it entity that will participate inthis new concept.

SB 2283 codifies and addsthe definition of “school readi-ness” to Act 77, Session Laws of Hawaiÿi 1997, in an effort tocreate conditions that willenable children in Hawaiÿi tosucceed in kindergarten andsubsequent school experiences.The legislation calls for thedevelopment of policies andstrategies for measuring resultsand performance indicators ofschool readiness that willstrengthen Hawaiÿi’s earlychildhood system and buildcapacity for sustainability.

CEO McCubbin Testifies BeforeSenate CommitteeIn April, Kamehameha SchoolsChief Executive OfficerHamilton McCubbin testifiedbefore the Senate Committee onIndian Affairs on the earlyeducational/“school readiness”needs of Hawaiian children.

Dr. McCubbin’s testimony,part of a cooperative effort withthe New Beginnings Alliance,Pacific Resources for Educationand Learning (PREL), Kapu NäKeiki, Alu Like, QLCC andother agencies, was in supportof additional federalparticipation in Hawaiÿi’s earlyeducation efforts on behalf ofHawaiians. McCubbin testifiedto the importance of “school

KS Economics Class part ofNational SeriesIn December, KapälamaCampus high school economicsteacher Dee Meecham had aclass session taped as part of a video series by the NationalCouncil on Economic Educa-tion. The series is designed tohelp teachers learn effectivemethods for teaching eco-nomics. Producers sought outexperienced teachers aroundthe country, recorded their classsessions and briefly interviewedstudents and their teachers. Theseries is produced by PacificStreet Films.

KS Transitions from FederallyFunded ProgramsKamehameha Schools hassuccessfully transitioned fromits administrative role in fourfederally funded programsunder the Extension EducationDivision (EED).

Two programs providedscholarships to NativeHawaiians. The Native

Hawaiian Higher EducationScholarship Program hastransferred to the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa BusinessCollege while The NativeHawaiian Health Scholarshipprogram has transferred toPapa Ola Lökahi, a comprehen-sive health program funded bythe Department of Health andHuman Services.

Two other programs,funded by the federal Depart-ment of Education, are the Safeand Drug Free Program (SDFP)and Kamehameha TalentSearch (KTS).

Pacific Resources forEducation and Learning (PREL)was designated by the office ofGov. Ben Cayetano to completethe last year of the grant cyclefor the SDFP.

KTS continues to provideservices under KS funding tostudents in selected stateDepartment of Educationschools to prepare them forcollege and/or other post-highopportunities. The federalDepartment of Education isworking with the University ofHawaiÿi at Hilo to serve as thenew grantee for the remainingtwo-year program of work.

CEO Forms Advisory GroupKamehameha Schools CEOHamilton McCubbin hasformed a CEO Board ofAdvisors, made up of a crosssection of educational, civic,cultural and business leadersfrom Hawaiÿi and across thenation, to advise him on criticalissues, foster development andpartnerships and promoteKamehameha’s mission.

Dr. McCubbin solicitednominations to the board andsought advice from trustees,chief executives, KS staff andcommunity leaders. Boardmembers were selected basedon experience, skill sets, diver-sity of backgrounds, exemplaryleadership, community linkages,and commitment to KS’ purposeand to the Hawaiian people.

The board, which will meet quarterly, has already mettwice. The normal board mem-ber term is three years, but afew select members are slatedfor four years.

“We need to have a rangeof leaders sending out themessages of Kamehameha,”McCubbin said. “Given ourStrategic Implementation Plan,broad representation across thestate is critical.”

Skipping to the BeatThe Kamehameha Jump Rope for Heartdemonstration team displays its talents onKamamalu Playground on the KapalamaCampus. The team, under the supervision ofphysical education teacher Lynn Yuen, travelsacross the state encouraging other schools toparticipate in the fundraising activity for theAmerican Heart Association. Kamehameha elementary students at Kapälama, Maui andHawai‘i raised more than $74,000 for theassociation in February.

Remembering Sept. 11 – Kapalama Campus fifth-graders present a check for $6,552dollars to state Youth Coordinator Mariah Walmsley and Disaster Coordinator KennethKotada of the Red Cross. The students raised the money for the Sept. 11th fund by sellinghand-crafted pins.

Cheerleaders Finish Third inNation, First in StateThe Kamehameha Schoolsvarsity cheer team, coached byDolly Wong ’78 and assistantsMelissa Beimes ’93 andShannon Cosma ’94, finishedthird in the nation at theNational High School Cheer-leading Championships held atWalt Disney World in February.The Warriors competed in theSmall Varsity division whichincluded 58 squads fromaround the nation.

The Kamehameha squadalso won their division in theILH championships as well asthe first-ever state tournamenttitle in Hawaiÿi High SchoolAthletic Associationcompetition.

Children’s Chorus goesHollywoodThe beautiful voices of theKamehameha SchoolsChildren’s Chorus, directed byLynell Bright, will be featuredin the upcoming Disney movie“Lilo and Stitch.” The animatedchildrens’ film centers aroundLilo, an Elvis-loving Hawaiiangirl, who adopts a “dog” froman animal shelter. The dogturns out to be a hyperintelli-gent alien who has escapedfrom the scientists who createdhim on another planet.

The chorus performs “HeMele No Lilo,” and “HawaiianRollercoaster Ride.” Bright andthe chorus members will headto Los Angeles in June to attendthe movie’s premiere.

Avisit to the rolling hills of upcountry Maui is usually one of themost peaceful trips in all the islands. But if you’ve visited theKamehameha Schools Maui Campus in Pukalani lately, tran-

quility and serenity probably aren’t the first words that come to mind.These are bustling times at KS-Maui.Last summer, construction of a four-classroom building completed

the 18-acre elementary school, where presently 272 students in gradeskindergarten through eight are housed.

This summer, the campus middle school – five major buildingsspread over a 12-acre site – will be completed, just in time to welcome astudent body which will more than double in the fall to include 592students in K-9 classes.

Meanwhile, mass grading for the first 42 acres for the high schoolsite is already underway, with construction of the first buildings set tobegin this spring. By the fall of 2003, 832 K-10 students will call KS-

Maui home.The entire $223 million campus,

begun in 1999, is expected to becompleted by 2005, and carry a K-12enrollment of 1,120.

For Thoemmes, the pressure is on to deliver thefacilities on time, and ready for use by students eagerfor a Kamehameha education. Thoemmes said that, attimes, things can get a bit nerve racking.

“There are nights I wake up in a cold sweat becauseI think maybe I forgot something,” Thoemmes laughed.“But I’ve been involved in the architectural projectmanagement field for 14 years, and these projects (Mauiand Hawaiÿi campus construction) are by far the mostexciting projects that I’ve been involved with.

“There are many, many issues to be resolved, andthe best you can do is try to mitigate those issues downand stay on top of them and not let them slip throughthe cracks. We’ll be there, but it’s definitely a challenge.”

Chamberlain comes to Kamehameha with vastexperience in school construction and administration,having spent 22 years at Milton Hershey School inPennslyvania and most recently serving as head of schoolfor University Lake School in Wisconsin.

“What attracted me toKamehameha was the opportunity tobuild a campus,” he said. “That’s veryexciting and it’s a once in a lifetimeopportunity. And here’s an opportu-nity with the resources to do it right.

“Helping to shape a schoolculture to serve a group of people isvery appealing,” Chamberlain added.“All school cultures are somewhatfluid, but making changes is hard. Youget DNA built into your culture – thisis the way we’re going to do things –and the idea of shaping that culturebefore it has set is very exciting. Again,the idea is to do it right.”

“Dr. Chamberlain has been a realpleasure to work with,” Thoemmessaid. “He obviously has done this kindof work before. He’s a good commu-nicator, and he’s not afraid to makedecisions. That certainly makes ourjob a lot easier.”

“What I feel good about is we have really goodpeople here on Maui,” Chamberlain said. “So I’m moreof a coordinator than a lone ranger. I’m here to servepeople, help to raise the questions and bring the rightgroups of people together to work through the issues to try and create a consensus. I’m trying to listen topeople.”

One of the first things Chamberlain did as head-master was to convene an Identity Task Force, comprisedof students, teachers, staff members, parents and com-munity members, to look at four key questions: what theKS-Maui colors, mascot, school song and logo should be.

Not suprisingly, maintaining the traditions ofKamehameha Schools was the general consensus of thegroup, although allowing for some modifications, witha suggestion of possibly calling the school athletic teamsMaui Warriors instead of just Warriors, for example.

“In the long term, it’s essential for KS-Maui toestablish its own identity,” Chamberlain said. “Thereshould probably be a Maui song. We’re very fortunatethat on May Day, in addition to the traditionalKamehameha songs, our children sing a song written by Kaipo Hale ’68 (entitled “Maui Nui a Kama”) that’sabout Maui. I’m sure that our own traditions willemerge over time.”

“Dr. Chamberlain employs inclusive decisionmaking at every turn,” said KS-Maui K-8 PrincipalLeeAnn DeLima ’77. “And his experience and leader-ship are really going to be put to the test here. Withinthe next four months, our student population is going to increase 110 percent and we’re going to add asecondary program as well.”

DeLima said family involvement is one of the keybenefits of having Kamehameha campuses on neighborislands. “Having a campus here on Maui providesopportunities for families to be involved in day-to-dayschool and extracurricular activities that otherwise maybe limited for families of boarder students,” she said.

“The research is clear that when families areinvolved with their children’s school, children in turnare successful in the classroom. This is what we want:informed and active parents supporting studentsuccess.”

Kapälama and it was hard for me to send him away. I’d have a real hard time letting my daughter go.”

One of the innovations on Maui will be the use ofan “academy concept” for high school students. Fouracademy buildings will be constructed: science andnatural resources; information technology; business andleadership; and arts and communications.

“The academy approach represents the best of theeducational research,” Chamberlain said. “We chose ourfour based upon what we believe is reflective of Mauias well as transferable to the other islands or to themainland. The hope is that our students will leave herewith some idea of a career orientation.”

Students will do some initial exploration aboutpossible career choices in middle school and in grades 9 and 10. Then, as juniors, they will select an academytrack to follow.

Juniors and seniors will still have classes in English,math, science and social studies, but assignments,whether they be a science project, book report or historylesson, will revolve around the theme of the academy.

Chamberlain is all for this “integrated learning”concept. “Learning never happens in a bubble,” he said.“Learning never sticks when it’s just a theory or whenit’s in a concept. It has to have roots – it has to havesome application. This academy concept gives it that.”

The academy approach climaxes in a senior project,which is researched and presented by the student. “Thepower of that learning, where students have to create it,work out the details and then present what they’velearned, really moves education from being a passiveexperience to an active, engaged experience,”

Chamberlain said. “If we want to produce leaders, and Ithink we do at Kamehameha, we have to prepare peoplewho are active, engaged individuals who know how toframe that experience, reflect on it and then share it.”

“Academies are a new concept for KamehamehaSchools, so it’s a new concept for us too,” Thoemmessaid. “The leadership has identified the academy concept as the way they want to deliver education, andwe’ve actually tailored the facilities to parallel thateducation plan.”

KS-Maui’s middle school will include two 20,000sq. ft. classroom buildings, a specialty/dining facility,a music building and an administration building/learning center.

The first phase of the high school calls for two30,000 sq. ft. grade 9 and 10 classroom buildings, alibrary, cafeteria, gymnasium and facilities for athleticsand information technology.

The four academy buildings,along with an adminstration building,will follow in the next phase of highschool construction. A performing artscenter and chapel will complete thecampus in the last construction phase.

“These outer island campusesare completely wired for technologyand we’ve got adequate power to allthe buildings,” Thoemmes said.“From a facilities standpoint, thesetwo new campuses really respond toeducation in the 21st century.”

“Our marching orders now are toget this campus up and running,”Chamberlain said. “We have a lot ofpositions to fill and we’re going tobring in a whole lot of new people.My greatest challenge here will be to continue a sense ofÿohana while we grow very quickly. That’s a very hardissue. How does one create a sense that we are KS-Maui,and that we are a family?

“I know this is a journey. This school is going to behere a long time. If we do things the proper way, andcreate the right foundation, this campus will far outliveanything we can even imagine.”

A s director of the Office of Strategic Planning/Strategic

Planning Enhancement Group (OSP/SPEG), there is perhaps

no one at Kamehameha Schools who is more familiar with its

Strategic Plan than Charlene Hoe.

Formulated in response to community and stakeholder input

and adopted in October 2000, the plan is now in its second phase of

implementation.

Phase II of the Strategic Implementation Plan, unveiled in

October 2001, outlines the development of Kamehameha programs

and services and sets institutional goals for the next five years.

Hoe recently sat down with I Mua in an effort to help everyone

better understand why and how Kamehameha Schools is moving in

the direction it is.

I Mua: How does Phase II of the StrategicImplementation Plan differ from Phase I?

Hoe: First, let me say that the ultimate mandateof the Strategic Plan is for Kamehameha Schoolsto extend the reach of its programs and servicesto more of the Hawaiian population.

Essentially, the first phase was completed atthe executive level right after the adoption of theplan. We tried to help position the institution tobe able to deliver on the promise of the plan andto take advantage of any initiatives that werealready on our plate. The decision to go K-12 withour Hawaiÿi and Maui campuses; the expansionof our K-3 reading program, and the reinitiationof a collaboration with the state Department ofEducation (DOE) for summer school offerings areall examples of Phase I initiatives.

Phase II goes to that commitment to involvestakeholder input. Now that we have the foun-dation in place to move forward, Phase II detailsspecifically what we’re going to do in the nextfive years to try and achieve the goals in the plan.

I Mua: How did Kamehameha Schools make thedecision to reach out to more Native Hawaiians,and how is this goal in accordance with the willof Princess Bernice Pauahi Bishop?

Hoe: The will does say her trust will establish twoschools, one for boys and one for girls. Throughthe course of Kamehameha’s more than 100-yearhistory, the specific way that’s been addressed haschanged from time to time, to hopefully bettermeet the needs of the Hawaiian community.

In fact, in 1962 Kamehameha went to thecourts and received permission to expand ser-vices with programs like post-high scholarships,adult education and early childhood initiatives.

As we went through the strategic planningprocess, it became clear to us through the discus-sions with our community that the need was evengreater. And as we looked at Pauahi’s mandate tothe trust and the surrounding documents of herlife and times, and those of Charles Reed Bishopafter her, we felt Pauahi chose education as astrategy to improve the well-being of her people.More specifically, we felt that was what she wasasking in her will.

I Mua: Wouldn’t you agree that, while a verynoble goal, attempting to improve the well-beingof an entire people is a monumental task?

Hoe: I’m very excited by what we’re doing, butvery humbled as well. You’re right, this is a verydaunting task and clearly, we can’t do this byourselves. And working with others is always achallenge to do it in a way that honors all parties’strengths. I think we’ve cut out major work forourselves.

I Mua: How much of the work can KamehamehaSchools carry?

Hoe: Clearly, we are limited by our resources,whatever they are. Regardless of the level of ourendowment, we do not have the resources to do it ourselves – we don’t have the resources byourselves to meet the need.

Can we provide the same level of services toall Hawaiians in the community? There’s no waywe can do that. Can we somehow be involved inbringing resources to meet the educational needs,or at least help improve the environment forlearning for the Hawaiian community? Absolutelyyes – as long as we engage with others to do that,and to me, that engagement should involveanyone who shares our mission.

I Mua: And that includes collaborating with thestate Department of Education?

Hoe: That’s where most of the Hawaiian studentsin our state are in the K-12 age group. The hope isthat we can support the DOE efforts and help raisethe bar of education in the state of Hawai‘i, and bydoing so create a greater voice for improvement ofeducation – thereby affecting education across theboard. That’s the hope. And we’re not the onlyones who are out there trying to work on educa-tional reform and improvement, the charter schoolmovement is clearly another.

I Mua: What are the major themes of theStrategic Plan, and what kind of financialcommitment is Kamehameha Schools makingtoward those goals?

Hoe: There are seven strategic institutionalgoals, or directions, contained in this implemen-tation phase. Those areas are early childhood;quality K-12 education; career awareness andoptions; community capacity for education;learning environment; resource development tosupport reach; and ÿike Hawaiÿi (the study of allthings Hawaiian).

Each year, funds are earmarked for thisexpansion. For the 2002-2003 fiscal year, whichbegins in July, Kamehameha Schools has approximately $21 million available for Phase IIinitiatives.

I Mua: Earlier, you said the ultimate mandateof the plan was for Kamehameha to extend thereach of its programs and services. How wouldyou define “reach” in this instance?

Hoe: When we talk about expanded reach in ourimplementation plan, we are not talking aboutdoing exactly what Kamehameha has done inthe past – provide full-time K-12 educationalservices to a limited number of Hawaiians. We’retalking about finding ways to address theeducational needs of the Hawaiian communityusing many different approaches.

We have to do that. If we were just going tocontinue what we have been doing, we’ll only beable to expand to another 1,000 students andthat’s about it. Kamehameha funded and deliv-ered full-time programs is the most expensiveapproach. We can either expand just a very little,or find other ways to expand greatly. That’swhat we’ve opted to do.

I Mua: So when people hear that KamehamehaSchools is now going to “serve” or “touch”them, what exactly does that mean?

When we use terms like reach, serve or touch,we’re using those terms in their broadest inter-pretation or definition. Sometimes Kamehamehamay simply make material available to people sothat they can follow up on their own.

For example, we’ve found that ourHawaiian community on the continental UnitedStates is very interested in gaining more access to cultural material or material directly related to Hawaiÿi. Well, we can’t take Hawaiÿi to thecontinent, but we can use distance learningtechnology to make cultural material and classesavailable worldwide. Or, Kamehameha may helpenable other agencies to expand their servicesmore broadly into the Hawaiian community.

I Mua: So we’re actually talking about theworldwide Hawaiian community?

Hoe: We’re getting to the point where half of ourHawaiian community will live outside of thestate of Hawaiÿi (see graphic on page 15). Wedon’t want to forget about half of the Hawaiiancommunity, and we need to figure out ways tostay connected to that community – whether it’s by distance learning, networks establishedthrough our alumni association or by collabo-rating with other Hawaiian organizations.

I Mua: In extending its reach in the Hawaiiancommunity, will Kamehameha cut currentprograms and services?

Hoe: Top and foremost, above the sevendirections of the plan, is a mandate from thetrustees to maintain the excellence of currentprograms. You could say that’s the eighthdirection of the plan.

As we move forward, extending our reachshouldn’t deteriorate the excellence of our currentprograms. Ultimately, it is everyone’s responsi-bility across the institution – from trustees ondown – to ensure that it doesn’t, by looking atbudgets and making sure that each dollar isimportant to the delivery of excellence. And if itisn’t, then reallocating that dollar.

I Mua: How will the success of these newinitiatives be measured?

Hoe: Phase II of our plan contains benchmarks to measure against, and we have targets bothfinancially and in numbers served for all of theinitiatives.

In all of our new endeavors, we’re askingstaff to develop the benchmarks that they wantthat particular effort to be measured against. Andthen PASE (Kamehameha’s Policy Assessmentand Systems Evaluation department) is expectedto help evaluate the success of that ongoingeffort. Once we get feedback on the effectivenessof the project, we can determine whether toexpand, adjust or discontinue it.

I Mua: How will people be notified of aparticular program or project?

Hoe: Communication is going to be a majorissue, both internally and externally. We need tokeep everyone aware of what the needs are, andwhat we’re doing to address those needs, so thatpeople can see the relationship between the two.

Every department at KS is conscious of theneed for better communication, and we’re tryingto design better ways of communicating. Butonce these programs begin to roll out, likepreschool scholarships for instance, they will bepromoted in the various media.

I Mua: As your department has gone out intothe community, what has been the generalreaction to the plan?

Hoe: Actually, the feedback has been verypositive. People have been especially supportiveof the concept of extended reach. Each meetinghas been helpful in clarifying our own vision andidentifying issues that we may not have beenaware of.

We’ve had charitable foundations approachus and ask to join in some of the initiatives, and

that’s almost unheard of. And other communityorganizations have said “We’re already doingthis piece – can we work together on that piece?”

We want and need to maintain thoserelationships we built when we were doingstrategic planning. We’re really trying very hardto make that plan that we created together live.

awika Eskaran knew very early in life where destiny would lead him. As a

young boy, he would go to his grandmother’s house and look forward to visits with

his uncle, August Schrader ’66.

“He would bring home wooden carvings of women’s faces and heads, and I would

think they were just so amazing!” Eskaran said. “I’d sleep on my grandmother’s lauhala

mat floor, and I’d hold the carving in one hand and feel the surface of it with my other

hand – I remember the lips would look so alive to me.

“Then, I’d get up real early and go into her kitchen. I’d open the drawers, take the

cleaver and paring knifes, put them in my tackle box and make like I was going to the

beach to go fishing. But I would search the beach for driftwood, and then just start making

things. And I thought, one day, I’m going to be able to do carvings like the ones my uncle

brought home.”

Having learned his art from craftsmen throughout the Pacific, master

artist Kawika Eskaran ’74 completes his latest project, BYU-Hawai‘i’s

57-foot double-hulled teaching canoe, the Iosepa.

Today, Kawika Eskaran has done much, muchmore than create wooden sculptures of women’sfaces and heads.

As the Director of Special Projects for Ka Halau Nui A Hawaiÿi Loa – the JonathanNapela Center for Hawaiian Language andCultural Studies at BYU-Hawaiÿi, his latestundertaking may be his crowning achievement –serving as one of two master carvers, along withTuione Pulotu of Tonga, during the design andconstruction of the school’s 57-foot voyagingcanoe, the Iosepa.

Launched in November 2001 before hugecrowds in Läÿie, the Iosepa will eventually sail theHawaiian islands, teaching students navigation,wayfinding and Hawaiian cultural values.

After studying fine arts at BYU-Hawaiÿi,Eskaran garnered worldwide recognition duringhis 13-year career at the Polynesian CulturalCenter, where he earned the title of master carver.

Eskaran’s carvings are in the collections ofevery United States president since RonaldReagan, and he’s also presented pieces to thepremier of China, the king of Tonga, the presidentof Finland, and American congressmen andsenators, movie stars and corporate presidents.Even Adnan Kashoggi – at one time the richestman in the world – has an Eskaran piece in his artcollection.

In addition, Eskaran was contracted througha gallery in Soho, New York, to create 12-footcarvings that adorn entryways to Floridamansions; he’s carved story boards for a yachtowned by the Australian New Agency; and he’screated 8-foot tikis for hotels in Japan owned bythe Asahi Junken Corporation. He’s even createdprops used in IMAX movies and for the

television series BayWatch Hawaiÿi.Eskaran has a humble and laid-back person-

ality, but at the same time is extremely passionateabout his craft. In fact, he left a position as acommunity development coordinator for theQueen Liliÿuokalani Children’s Center specificallyfor the opportunity to build the canoe.

“One day I was down at Hukilau Beach,”Eskaran said, “when an assistant to Bill Wallace’66 (Wallace is the director of BYU-Hawaiÿi’sHawaiian studies program) told me they wereputting in for a grant to build a canoe for theprogram. He said if the grant materialized, wouldI want to help build the canoe?

“I told him that if you get the funding forthe canoe, I would quit any job I have – and Idon’t care what kind of money I’m making – I’llquit, just to come and help build the canoe. Allmy life, I’ve wanted to do that.”

Eskaran joined the BYU-Hawaiÿi staff inApril of 2001.

“The canoe is made of six dakua logs, whichresemble koa, each about 4.5 to 5 feet in diam-eter,” Eskaran said. “The logs were about 30 feetin length, because the barges in Fiji, where thelogs came from, could only accommodate 35-foot lengths.”

Eskaran said building the canoe was aunique educational experience for BYU-Hawaiÿistudents. “Every day, they’d be passing throughand we’d give them jobs to do. Some of them hadno idea what adzing out a canoe was like. Sowe’d sharpen the metal adze, teach them somebasic safety rules, and then let them go.

“I would have loved to have done it in theold style, with the koÿi and all that, but we had adeadline to meet. I think we took about a yearand a half off the time it would have taken tocomplete it by using the chain saw.”

“I’ve trained nearly 30 years in carving, and to be in this position now where I’mactually doing what I love to do and to see the work have meaning for so manypeople, that’s very special.”

a visitor showed up at the canoe building site.“Tuione and I wanted to construct curved

iako (the long bent beams that pass under the deckof the canoe and join one hull to the other) andwe had no experience in doing it,” Eskaran said.“Most of the voyaging canoes in Hawaiÿi havestraight iako, but one exception is the Höküleÿa,and that’s because Mr. Bowman created them.”

Just when the two carvers were about tobegin with a trial and error strategy, Bowman, whohad been invited to visit the canoe site in Läÿie bya friend who was supplying marine finishes forthe project, arrived on the North Shore.

“He spent hours working on drawings andthen went home to create a miniature version of the jigs he suggested we use,” Eskaran said of Bowman. “He invited us to his home so hecould share his jig design, showed us how toeffectively use plywood to make wood clamps for laminating, and he loaned us about 20 of hisown clamps made by his son for the building ofthe Hawaiÿi Loa.”

Through the experience of working withBowman, Eskaran said he’s often reminded of thesaying “I maikaÿi ke kalo, i ka oha,” meaning “thegoodness of the kalo is evidenced in the young itproduces.”

“I’ve come full circle with my KamehamehaSchools teacher, and at 94 years old, the masterhas become the teacher once again,” Eskaransaid. “I am so thankful for this wonderful man.He’s been so willing to assist us and every timehe returns to see our waÿa it’s like watching achild in a toy store, he’s so full of excitement andanticipation.”

Like a true artist, Eskaran said he realizesthat the canoe carries symbolic meaning as well.“Making this canoe for the Hawaiians has been avery special experience. We need things like thisto help instill pride within us. I’ve worked withat-risk teens, and so many of them have lost theirHawaiian identity. They’re into that Jawaiianmusic, and they’re almost acting like foreigners intheir own land.

“So, to create things like this canoe – youshould see the draw. We had an open house hereone night, and more than a thousand peoplecame. I’ve trained nearly 30 years in carving, andto be in this position now where I’m actuallydoing what I love to do and to see the work havemeaning for so many people, that’s very special.”

Although he’s studied under master carversfrom Hawaiÿi, Tonga, Samoa and the CookIslands, among others, Eskaran credits NewZealand’s Epanaia Christy with having a majorinfluence on him.

Eskaran had high praise for Pulotu, whoserved as headmaster for the canoe project. “He’s the most amazing guy with the chainsaw,”Eskaran said. “You just wouldn’t believe whathe’s able to do with the saw.

“I’m so fortunate that my entire life, I’ve been able to meet masters from all over thePacific and Europe. They’ve been 70, 80 or 90years old, and I’ve just been lucky enough tomeet them at the time when they wanted to teachto pass their knowledge on. And Tuione Pulotu is one of those people.”

It was during the construction of the Iosepathat Eskaran was reunited with his formerKamehameha Schools shop teacher of nearly 30 years ago, master woodworker WrightBowman ’28.

“Tuione and I met Mr. Bowman at our canoesite through divine intervention,” Eskaran said.“Every morning we would pule and ask forguidance and safety and that doors be opened onour behalf to ensure smooth sailing throughoutthe project.”

Sure enough, a day after Eskaran had search-ed the Internet for photos showing how toconfigure jigs for the laminating of wooden pieces,

Eskaran and Christy worked together at thePolynesian Cultural Center for 13 years, carvingeverything imaginable from human figures andtikis to helping to restore a New Zealand warcanoe, called a wakataua, originally made for KingGeorge V.

Much of their work is still displayed forvisitors today.

“When I was with the cultural center, peoplewould already call me a master carver, and Iwouldn’t accept that,” Eskaran said. “Thosepeople were unknowing. It’s only when those whoare within that part of the culture – who practiceit and know it – when those guys acknowledgeyou, then you know you’ve made it.”

Eskaran said patience and respect were themost important qualities he needed to learn fromthese master artists.

“Right away, you want to learn to do themost intricate things, and it’s just not done thatway. In fact, the Maoris are very culturally minded,they really guard the carving practices and whatit entails. To teach an outsider is not really known.So, for me to come in and learn from a truemaster like Christy, who learned from the last twograndmasters in New Zealand (Pine and JohnTaiapa), was quite an honor for me.”

For Eskaran, the significance of his life’s workcarries much meaning. “The meaning for me isdeep-rooted and it touches the deepest heart-strings when I talk about it. So much sacrifice hasbeen made in my life trying to attain the knowl-edge and technical skills that I now have.

“I sometimes look into my mind’s eye andsee all of the masters who have taught me and thebackgrounds that they have – it’s like a geneology,a whole line of master carvers. It’s like we’respanning ions of time, and I’m one of those links.Now, I look to teach, and I won’t hide anything.”

And though it’s been many years since he’s slept on his grandmother’s lauhala mat, it’sobvious that Eskaran’s love of wooden scupltureshas not faded.

“Some years ago, I realized that wood is aliving thing,” Eskaran said. “It has spirit. Whenyou mälama that, and shape and polish it, thegrain reveals itself, the colors come out – you endup creating something of excellence, and helpedthat object become something of value andpermanence. The beauty of it will be seen bygenerations, and I know that after I pass away,the piece will live on and on.”

T onnie Casey earns her livingstudying the plants and animals onKamehameha Schools lands.

Armed with a bachelor’s degree in animalscience from the University of Hawaiÿi and amaster’s in zoology and entomology fromColorado State, Casey is based on the island ofHawaiÿi and serves as Kamehameha’s onlywildlife biologist.

Casey designs and conducts research studiesto best manage threatened and endangeredspecies, assists in plans for the regeneration andrehabilitation of native forest, and coordinatesKamehameha’s wildlife program with state,federal and private agencies.

Her “office” includes Kamehameha’s exten-sive conservation and agriculturally designatedland holdings on the island, including roughly160,000 acres in the Kona area and another 34,000acres in the Volcano district. She also spends time on Kamehameha’s neighbor island conser-vation lands.

A fact that few may realize is that 46 percentof Kamehameha’s 366,000 acres of land holdingsin Hawaiÿi are zoned for conservation.

“My greatest challenge here is actuallygetting the work done,” Casey said. “Because wehave so many acres that need stewardship, thechallenge is finding the money and manpower toget the job done.”

Casey’s boss, Robert “Bob” Lindsey ’66,agrees. Lindsey is the regional director forKamehameha’s Land Assets Division on the islandof Hawaiÿi. “Our lands are so vast, so diverse andso spread out on all of the islands, that it reallytakes a ‘village’ to help us steward our conser-vation resources,” he said. “The issues are manyand the needs are great, be it helping speciesrecover or restoring habitats for birds and plants.

“But we’ve got an army of people who helpus, whether it’s our own educators likeKamehameha staff members Eli Nahulu ’55, Patty Ikeda, Tom Chun ’63 and Ron Kimball ’73,or organizations like the Waipa Foundation atLumahaÿi, the U.S. Army at Kawailoa or theEdith Kanakaole Foundation at Honohononui.”

Kamehameha Senior Land Manager PeterSimmons, also based on the Big Island, hadsimilar thoughts. “We have a bounty of conserva-tion partners, and we enjoy relationships andbenefit from the interest in conservation demon-strated on our lands by federal, state and countyorganizations, local communities and evenfamilies and individuals,” Simmons said.

“With this help, it is our kuleana to know,aloha, and malama these vast, varied and magnif-icent acres. The challenge is to dynamicallybalance and find compatibility among programsof biodiversity enhancement, economic produc-tivity, land based educational opportunities andenrichment of cultural use of our lands.”

Casey’s job involves managing alien species,like rats, pigs, sheep, goats, miconia and bananapoka, which degrade conservation lands, andconducting bird counts and plant surveys. Herpractical field work has included projects likeattaching radio collars to rats to track their move-ment patterns, aiding efforts to manage the ratpopulation.

“That’s what I’m out here doing, trying tosolve these types of environmental problems.Rats, which feed on bird eggs, and mosquitoes,which carry avian malaria, are just a hugeproblem,” she said.

Casey said a simple occurrence like sheepovergrazing an area can have devastating effects– leading to topsoil runoff during rainstorms,ruining wetlands and eventually choking offcoral reef systems.

“Sheep and goats eat tons and tons of forageevery day,” Casey said. “We’re losing lots ofplants – plants that could have great medicinalvalue – and plants that we don’t even know arethere.”

According to Casey, the protection of endan-gered plants and animals has immense value thatmay not be readily apparent to casual observers.

“From a biological standpoint, you’re talkingabout the web of life,” she said. “When you erad-icate plants or animals out of that web, you neverknow where that web is going to go or whatconnection it’s going to make. If just one smallthing is changed, you’ve changed the entire web.”

Casey credits former trustee Myron “Pinky”Thompson with helping Kamehameha to re-examine its policies on conservation andagricultural lands.

“There’s been a huge turnaround in theinterest in these lands,” Casey said. “We’re stilltrying to balance economy with conservation,and unfortunately, most conservation lands don’tdeal well with any economic use.

“It’s also a maintenance issue. How muchmaintenance do you actually do to keep a systemintact? And that system is always evolvingbecause you can’t stop evolution. But to see thatpeople are actually interested in what we’redoing up here, really makes my job worthwhile.”

With Kamehameha’s Strategic Plan objectiveto mälama i ka ÿäina: practice ethical, prudent andculturally appropriate stewardship of lands andresources, Casey is perhaps the schools’ biggestcheerleader when it comes to the new ÿÄina Uluinitiative to use Kamehameha lands to helpeducate students.

“ÿÄina Ulu is going to be a great program,”she said. “I’d really like to see outdoor educationcome to the frontline. There’s so many things wecan do with the kids – teach them about insects,

birds and plants, and they could also help withthings like the regeneration of plants or weedcontrol.

“Getting the kids out here is really a way tosave and help preserve the land. If we can get thestudents out here, then they can really see therelationship of the integrated parts of the whole –it’s all a linked system.”

Casey said her ultimate dream would be tocreate a “conservation camp,” for island students.“We could have students come up for a week at a time, hold classes up here and really get into it – just for them to come out and spend time inthe forest.”

Casey said another simple benefit of havingstudents work with her is that she can use thehelp. “We have so many acres that it’s justimpossible for me to do it all,” she said. “Wehave 65 miles of shoreline and miles and miles of streams that Kamehameha cares for.

“Island ecosystems are much more fragilethan continental systems, and if we don’t get outthere and see what’s going on, we can’t movethings in the right direction. There are just somany opportunities out here to create things thatwill be good for the students, good for the land,and good for Kamehameha Schools.”

F ollowing in the footsteps of such beloved former Kamehameha Schools medical directors as George Mills ’40 and Patrick

Walsh, Dr. Phillip Reyes ’74 is well into his firstyear as the school’s clinical director of medicalservices.

Hired in August of 2001, Reyes oversees astaff of 12 at the two medical facilities on theKapälama Campus – Hale Ola, located betweenthe upper and lower campuses, and theKalanimoku Dispensary, which is on theelementary school level.

Reyes’ staff includes six registered nurses,three medical assistants, a clinic coordinator and adriver. This group provides medical services toKS staff members and to the 3,200 students oncampus, including 550 boarding students ingrades 7-12.

And while he sees the occasional injured orsick employee, Reyes said his staff’s basic job is toprovide primary care to students, the majority ofwhom are seen at the 25-bed clinic Hale Ola.

“We’re not a hospital,” Reyes said. “We’remore like an observation unit, where we’ll holdstudents for a few days, especially if they havecolds or the flu. The boarding students live inreally close-knit quarters, and it’s not good forthem to be in the dormitories when they’re ill andcan pass it on to everybody else.

“If the students need more than that, likespecial medications or intravenous lines, thenwe’ll get them off to a community hospital. Ourprimary job is to take care of the students and get them back to class with a minimum loss ofclass time.”

Reyes said he’s serving more as an adminis-trator than full-time physician. “About a year ago, our division was reorganized,” he said. “My position has changed from that of a medicaldirector to a clinical director, and we’ve hired anurse practitioner who actually provides the day-to-day medical care for the students.”

Reyes credited Dr. Bernard Chun ’62 withhelping to reorganize Kamehameha’s medicalservices program and helping to stabilize thedepartment during the illness of the late Dr.Patrick Walsh.

At the request of classmate Rowena PeroffBlaisdell ’62 (Kamehameha’s director of programservices), Chun donated his time to the school asa consulting physician for more than nine months.

“Even though he’s a busy doctor with anactive practice, Dr. Chun stepped in to providethat guidance and assistance for the medicalstaff,” Reyes said. “He’s a great physician – really a very caring doctor. He’s actually just agreat person, and I know the staff up here reallyliked him.”

Nurse practitioner Diane Knight said Chunwas “a very good physician and administrator,”while office coordinator Charlene Handa waseven more direct – calling Chun “a godsend.”

“Well, there’s only one reason I volunteeredmy time,” Chun said. “And that was because ofthe students up here. It’s really all about the kids.”

Reyes remembers well his time atKamehameha Schools, and today’s studentswould do fine to emulate his path. “I developedmy interest in science and math when I was atKamehameha, and I always knew that was thedirection I wanted to go into.

“But as for becoming a doctor, I always hadthat thought ‘Can I make it?’ Especially for some-one coming from Molokaÿi – born and raised onHawaiian Homes land – medicine was a thought,but I still had that doubt that I had the qualifica-tions to get in to medical school.”

Reyes did not let that “doubt” get the best of him.

After earning a degree in zoology from theUniversity of Hawaiÿi, he participated in the ‘ImiHo‘öla (those who seek to heal) post baccalaureateprogram at the university, a two-year programmeant to prepare students from disadvantagedbackgrounds for a career in medicine.

He eventually earned his degree from theJohn Burns Medical School at UH in 1986. Reyesis the first UH medical school graduate fromMolokaÿi, and the first physician of NativeHawaiian ancestry from the island as well. Today,he is a part-time instructor at the medical school.

Reyes had some advice for thoseKamehameha students thinking of following himinto a career in medicine. “As far as we know,there’s a little more than 200 Native Hawaiianphysicians in the world. That’s a very smallnumber,” he said.

“It’s not an easy field. There are hugecommitments in both time and money. But it is arewarding field, and you’re always happy whenyou can make people better.”

A former co-medical director at MolokaÿiGeneral Hospital, Reyes says humbly that he’shad a “fortunate” career.

“After I graduated from medical school, I knew I was going to go back to Molokaÿi andserve the community that I came from. But as aphysician interested in Native Hawaiian healthcare, coming home to Kamehameha seemsnatural.

“I’ve been fortunate in my career that oppor-tunities have popped up that I’ve been able totake advantage of. But I will always do what’sbest for Kamehameha Schools. I do look at myself,though, as staying here a long time – as long asI’m the right person for the job. I’d really like to.”

Memories of 9/11 still haunting

Thank you for the “Letters From New York” piece in

the Winter 2002 Issue of I Mua. I’ve often wondered if

someone from the Kamehameha Schools ‘ohana was

near the World Trade Center or the Pentagon after the

attacks.

At the time, I was working as a tenant coordi-

nator for Cushman & Wakefield (a commercial real

estate corporation), which is located a few blocks from

the White House.

That morning was complete chaos. Because of

our building’s close proximity to the White House,

we too thought that we could be under attack. My

daughter attends preschool a few blocks from the

White House. Due to the heavy traffic, I walked the

six or seven blocks to get her just to have her with

me and make sure she was okay.

As we walked back to my building, I noticed that

the fear on people’s faces was so real and so raw. Some

were crying, some were trying to reach loved ones, and

some were just walking about aimlessly.

The sight at the Pentagon is something that I’ll

never forget. Seeing the endless plume of smoke

brought tears to my eyes. You can’t imagine the

devastation until you see it for yourself.

Every night on my way home, with daughter in

tow, I still get “chicken skin” whenever an airplane

flies overhead, to or from Reagan National Airport.

The sheer speed and enormity of the aircraft makes me

cringe.

I don’t think that will ever change.

In Memoriam

Myron B. Thompson Feb. 29, 1924 – Dec. 25, 2001

Myron “Pinky” Thompson, whopassed away on Christmas Day 2001,served as a trustee of KamehamehaSchools from 1974 until 1994.

Born in Honolulu, Thompsonheld an undergraduate degree fromColby College in Maine and a master’sdegree in social work from theUniversity of Hawaiÿi. In 1975, Mr. Thompson received an honorarydoctoral degree of law from ColbyCollege.

His professional expertise was in the area ofsocial work, and he headed the state Department ofSocial Services and Housing and the private charitableinstitution, Queen Liliÿuokalani Trust (now QueenLiliÿuokalani Children’s Center). Thompson was alsothe first chairman of the state Land Use Commission.He was very active in the community and heldmembership and board positions in numerous civicorganizations.

He expressed his deep commitment to Hawaiiancauses through his service as chairman of Papa OlaLokahi, an organization that implements programs toimprove the health of Native Hawaiians; his involve-ment with the federal commission for Native HawaiianCulture and Arts; and his membership on the board ofAlu Like, an organization dedicated to increasingemployment opportunities for Native Hawaiians.

Thompson was also president of the PolynesianVoyaging Society, where he and son Nainoa, now aKamehameha Schools trustee himself, helped rekindlethe pride of an entire people through the exploits ofthe voyaging canoe Hokuleÿa.

In addition, Thompson played a key role insecuring and administering federal funds for thebenefit of Native Hawaiians through his supportiveinvolvement in the enactment of the Native HawaiianHealth Act and the Native Hawaiian Education Act inCongress.

From advocating for programs aimed at helpingyoung families and teaching the elderly about goodnutrition, to assisting first-time entrepreneurs and pro-viding funds for college-bound Hawaiians, Thompsondemonstrated his personal and professional commit-ment to improving the well-being of Native Hawaiians.

“Pinky leaves an enduring legacy,” said NeilHannahs ’69, director of Kamehameha’s Land AssetsDivision and a longtime friend of the Thompson ÿohana.“Kamehameha will forever be changed by his leader-ship and our Hawaiian people will long benefit fromthe early education programs and outreach partner-ships he inspired. We remain committed to the voyagehe started, and will endeavor to complete the task.”

Planning for Alumni Week2002 continues with celebratingclasses of years ending in “2” and“7” taking the lead. The 50member alumni choral group, Nä Leo o Kamehameha no Hilo,led by Director Clarence Waipa,provided song and music for thespecial occasion. A holiday potluckfollowed the ceremonies.

Nä Leo Mele o Kamehamehano Hilo held a Dec. 20 Christmasconcert at the University of Hawaiÿiat Hilo. A sellout crowd of morethan 600 people attended theholiday event. The concert was one of several fundraisers for thealumni choral group. Moniesearned from these fundraisers areused to finance choral members’trips to mainland performances.The group rehearses everyThursday night at St. Joseph’s HighSchool in Hilo.

The East Hawaiÿi Region onceagain participated in the island’sFood Bank, Fill-a-Bag, Feed-a-Family food drive on March 10.The region provided a $300donation toward the printing of41,000 brown paper sacks that wereinserted into the Sunday newspapereditions of the Hawaiÿi TribuneHerald and West Hawai‘i Today. Lastyear, more than $52,000 and 82,000pounds of food were donated tofeed the hungry. Approximately 40percent of the recent Food Bankbeneficiaries on the island ofHawaiÿi are Native Hawaiians.

2001 has come and gone along withlaughter and tears and ups anddowns. It will forever be in ourmemories and we will build fromthere onwards. Our appreciationfor our country and our love,respect and gratitude for thePrincess Bernice Pauahi Bishop hasalso grown significantly with theestablishment of our Maui Campusand the activities of the school hereon Maui. We had an encouragingyear as Maui alumni helped withservice projects at the school, underthe able leadership of PuananiDoong Lindsey ’61, to our firstannual ÿAha‘aina led by JamesAarona ’65. Our first recognizedalumni from Maui were JohnRalston ’30 (now deceased) andJames “Kimo” Apana ’80. We sold

script again at the Maui CountyFair and earned $3,000 thanks tothe guidance of Marilyn Wong Hill’55 and husband, Bob. Our finalevent of the year honored PrincessBernice at our first Pauahi Sundayon Dec. 16; we thank FeadoraSequeira Alcomindras ’65 fororganizing a very special eventwhich introduced our region’schoir for the first time.

We look forward to aneven more exciting 2002, and hopeyou will all be able to participateand kökua in our meetings and

activities. Our membership isabout one out of every sevenalumni on Maui, so we have a longways to go to reach 100 percentparticipation. More importantly, weneed to keep our alumni together,to support our beloved alma mater,Kamehameha, to providescholarships each year, and to be avoice in the growth of education inour state.

were taught eurythmy – a rhythmical or graceful move-ment in harmony with the rhythm of the spoken word.Sounds like the hula, doesn’t it? Except that the accom-paniment was carefully selected poetry. I was nevercurious about how eurythmy got to Kamehameha untilI saw a class doing it in a university in Switzerlandsome years ago. “How do you suppose eurythmy got toHawaiÿi back in the 1930s?” I asked my host, an elder ofthe university staff. “That’s easy,” he replied. “Did youknow Grace Richards? She had a beautiful voice and shecame here from Hawaiÿi to study. I am confidant thatshe took eurythmy home with her.” We think she wasTrustee Theodore Richards’ sister.

Occasionally, the dance class would present adrama, primarily a Hawaiian legend revealed in dance.And we were encouraged to hear matinees of theHonolulu Symphony Orchestra at the Princess Theater.Admission was 25 cents. Piano, violin, cello, and voicelessons were free, and practice rooms were assigned inthe main building on campus. Monitors listened at thedoors, and it was advisable that you were practicingBach or Haydn rather than “Sweet Leilani.”

On Thursday evenings, the girls in the choirwalked in a group to the chapel across King Street topractice with the boys for Sunday’s services. It wasalways a rehearsal eagerly anticipated.

Senior Cottage was a wonderful learning time.Taking care of an infant for a week: feeding, bathing,doing the laundry, and taking the baby to the pediatri-cian was real training. Each of the functions of managinga home was directed by Louise Struve as each girl in thecottage rotated through all the functions. Rememberplanned nutritionally balanced meals within a budget?

And now and then, an old Ford jalopy with fouror five musicians from across the street would circle ourbuilding shortly after lights out. Sometimes they’dmanage two circles before the night watchman shooedthem out. But, oh how sweet, to hear them playingsoftly, “Goodnight Sweetheart.” Many hearts beat faster,but there was only one face with a knowing smile.

At the 70th reunion of the KS Class of 1931 in July of last year, a few eyes looked wistfully over the edge into Kalihi Valley. We were looking for the

trees we had planted so many years ago. How could anyof us who took part in those “Arbor Days” ever forgetthe promise of growth while trying to balance on thatsteep slope.

Sharing in the upkeep of the school wasprobably the major teaching method for building goodand industrious students. With tuition at $50, who couldcomplain? The jobs rotated about every six weeks. Therewere tables to be set, silver and napkins carefully placed(and much as I hated it, to this day I fold the dinnernapkins as I was taught), dishes to be washed in acommercial machine, potatoes and carrots to be peeled,linen to be ironed, the housemother’s room to bestraightened, the halls and public rooms to be swept and dusted, and yes, the main staircase, too. It descend-ed three floors landing on the first floor in two separatesymmetrically designed flights. Those stairs were sweptwith dustpan and brush. A modest sign on the wallabove the fifth step read “There are no elevators in thehouse of success.”

The housemother checked your thoroughness and meted out discipline. Taking a short cut from onefloor to another via the window and fire escape wassternly disapproved. Penalties consisted of having tolearn and recite a psalm to the housemother before youcould leave on Saturday morning. A reasonably activestudent could graduate with all the psalms committed to memory.

There was assembly every morning at eight for the whole school. We sang hymns, had morning prayers,heard announcements and sometimes had a brief littletalk by the faculty, Mr. Frank Midkiff – president of theschools, someone of local interest, or national fame. Atthe moment, I can only remember Helen Wills. It wasalso an opportunity to explore our talent for makingharmony.

There was the usual English, history, math, typing,history of the Pacific, Hawaiian from Papa Wise, whoencouraged us with Hershey bars, and there was oral

interpretation. This is notmeant to be a complete list.

Oral interpretation tookus into improvisation. We werechallenged one day to presenta skit involving four of us. Acountry store in Maui was theset, and the storekeeper wasignorant of pidgin andHawaiian. Jackie Rosario was ademanding customer wanting

a bar of “Brown Shope”. The unscripted exchange wasincredibly funny. The skit ended with one of thecharacters clutching her purchase and suggesting thatthe salesman “Charge in the book. When the book full,trow way.” We were delighted to be invited to clubs intown and to McKinley High School to do ourimprovisations.

We could not dance the hula, but in dance class, we
