Aloha käkou!

The beginning of another school year is a

great time for reflecting on the impact

Kamehameha Schools is having in our

community.

Four years into Kamehameha’s 2000-

2015 Strategic Plan, and new students, new programs and

new stories about what KS is doing to expand its impact

beyond our preschool and K-12 campuses abound.

I Mua’s cover story on charter schools is a good

example. It focuses on the 12 startup charter schools KS

supports through the Ho‘olako Like program and the two

conversion charter schools through the Ho‘okako‘o

Corporation.

Kamehameha contributes $1 for every $4 that the

state of Hawai‘i allocates for each student in these

14 schools.

This contribution helps these charter schools meet

their educational and community objectives and it fulfills

KS’ goal of reaching more Hawaiians.

Another feature in this issue looks at KS efforts on

Kaua‘i, where our Extension Education Division is serving

more Hawaiian students through our Kamehameha

Scholars and Enrichment Ho‘olauna programs. These

initiatives are expanding, and reaching ever more

Hawaiian students throughout the state.

Let’s not forget that we have expanded our campus

programs as well. This school year will see our Maui and

Hawai‘i campuses grow to grade 11, with each campus

enrolling 976 students. This expansion allows more

children from other areas of the state to have the oppor-

tunity to attend Kapälama.

Next year, these neighbor island campuses will serve

1,120 students in grades K-12.

Finally, I am so proud of the fact that six of the charter

schools we are supporting are headed by Kamehameha

graduates, who have stepped into challenging leadership

roles with a deep sense of dedication, kuleana and pono.

I know they are strong community role models for the

students in their care, as they build leaders for the future.

Through our campus and extension programs, KS is

indeed making a difference in our community by improv-

ing the well-being of the Hawaiian people, and I think

Pauahi would be very pleased.

Kamehameha files responsebrief in Doe v. KamehamehaSchools caseIn May, Kamehameha Schoolsfiled its legal brief respondingto the appeal in the Doe v.Kamehameha Schools case nowbefore the U.S. Ninth CircuitCourt of Appeals.

Kamehameha was sued infederal district court in June2003 by an anonymous plaintiff– John Doe – who, as a non-Hawaiian, was denied admis-sion to Kamehameha Schoolsunder its Native Hawaiianpreference policy.

In November 2003, federaldistrict court judge Alan Kayruled that Kamehameha’sadmissions policy giving pref-erence to Native Hawaiianapplicants is legal. Doe hasappealed Kay’s decision to theU.S. Ninth Circuit Court, whichis based in San Francisco, Calif.

Kamehameha has not yetreceived word on the date orlocation of the appeal hearing.

“We have assembled a verystrong and highly motivatedteam of legal experts from bothHawai‘i and the mainland,” saidKamehameha chief executiveofficer Dee Jay Mailer.

“They have done excellentwork on our behalf, and like us,they are extremely committedto winning this case because itthreatens the very heart ofKamehameha’s mission and Ke Ali‘i Bernice Pauahi’s wishesthrough her will.”

Kamehameha will vigor-ously defend its admissionspreference policy on the follow-ing points:

• Kamehameha Schools admis-sions preference policy helpsremedy past injusticessuffered by Hawaiians.

• The policy of preference isessential to fulfillingKamehameha Schools’mission.

• Using the resources of PrincessPauahi’s estate, KamehamehaSchools has been a leader ineducating Hawaiians andpreserving the indigenousHawaiian culture.

• Kamehameha Schools usesprivate resources to provide aquality education to Hawaiianchildren.

Ho‘olauna Moloka‘i debutsIn June, Kamehameha’sExtension Education Divisionunveiled Ho‘olauna Moloka‘i, a week-long, place-basedlearning session modeled afterExplorations which featuresstudies in Hawaiian history,culture and language.

The program was housedat the Moloka‘i Ranch Kaupöäcampsite on the western end of

the island, with 23 non-KSsixth-graders taking part in theinaugural session. Studentexcursions included trips to theLanikäula kukui grove, Püko‘o,Kamehameha Schools’Kalama‘ula site (also known asKeawenui), Ho‘olehua to HanaKüpono Farms, Mo‘omomi,Hale o Lono and Kä‘ana.

In Mo‘omomi, studentsobserved a set of carved bootprints called Kälai Nä Wäwae(carved footprints). The mo‘olelo(story) of Kälai Nä Wäwaereveals that the boot prints –which depict heels that werenot familiar to the küpuna ofMoloka‘i – were carved insandstone 200 years prior tothe arrival of Capt. James Cook.

It was said a prophetessnamed Ku‘una carved the bootprints and predicted that a day would come when theküpuna would see these printson their shores – and when thatday came, Hawaiians wouldlose everything most preciousto them.

Imua TV moves to KHNL News 8In July, Kamehameha Schoolschose local NBC affiliate KHNLNews 8, and its sister stationK5, to televise its monthlytelevision program Imua TV.

“We’re excited about themove because it allows KS toshare our messages with amuch larger audience,” said KS Communications DirectorMarsha Bolson.

KHNL will air the primarybroadcast at 8:30 p.m. on thefirst Tuesday of every month,except in November 2004 andFebruary and May 2005 whenthe show will be aired on K5.

Mission Camp serves Kalaupapa communityIn March, Maui Campus kahuKalani Wong ’74 led a delega-tion of seven Kamehamehastudents from the Maui andKapälama campuses toKalaupapa, Moloka‘i for aservant leadership lesson incommunity service.

The five-day KS-MauiMission Camp saw studentsperform a number of service

projects for the remote commu-nity, including the cleaning andweeding of the area aroundSiloama church, built in 1871shortly after the first leprosypatients were banished to theregion.

“The mission camp gavestudents the opportunity toreach beyond their comfortzones to learn about the historyand culture of this place, and toserve and learn from its people,”Wong said.

Kamehameha joins QLT insupport of repeal of citycondominium condemnationordinanceIn September, KamehamehaSchools joined with the QueenLili‘uokalani Trust to supportBill 53, a measure aimed atrepealing the city’s mandatoryleasehold conversion ordinanceknown as Chapter 38.

QLT is spearheading therepeal effort because of thethreat to their valuable land-holdings that provide a majorsource of their operatingincome in support of orphanedand indigent Hawaiian keiki.

Kamehameha is support-ing the repeal effort as it contin-ues to fight the city’s appeal ofthe Kahala Beach Apartmentscase.

In March, Circuit Courtjudge Eden Elizabeth Hifo dis-missed a Chapter 38 attemptby Kahala Beach lessees tocondemn the Kamehamehaland beneath that property. Thejudge granted Kamehamehaÿsmotion for summary judgmentbecause KS challenged thequalification of many of thelessees who applied with thecity for condemnation.

As a result, the city’srequirement of at least 25qualified applicants from theKahala Beach Apartments wasnot met and the condemnationattempt was terminated.

The Kahala BeachApartments is one of twomulti-family projects on O‘ahuthat KS has purposely chosennot to sell.

“Kamehameha opposesthe forced sale of our land,”said KS chief executive officerDee Jay Mailer. “Not only does this violate our rights as a property owner, but it alsowould force us to part with agift Pauahi left to benefit herpeople.”

Kamehameha opposesChapter 38 on the followingkey points:

• Chapter 38 has cost Honolulutaxpayers millions of dollars– several attempts to forceconversion have been dis-missed by the courts – andhas benefited very few people.

• Several lessees have tried toabuse the law, which alsocosts taxpayers money, sincelandowners who fight thesebattles and win are reim-bursed for their defense costs.

• Chapter 38 does not serve thegeneral good of the commu-nity. Taking care of our eldersand keiki does.

• The leasehold condominiumlandscape has changed dra-matically since Chapter 38was enacted in 1991. All ofHawai‘i’s large private land-owners who had developedproperty in leasehold haveopted to voluntarily sell theirresidential properties so thereis no concentration of owner-ship in the residential lease-hold market.

‘Ike Pono Hawai‘i programtravels to CaliforniaIn May, Kamehameha’s ‘IkePono Hawaiÿi travelingresource program helped toextend the institution’s reachbeyond Hawaiÿi’s shores to thestate of California.

A team of Hawaiiancultural resource specialistsmet with Kamehameha alumni,community and school groupsin San Francisco, Los Angelesand San Diego. More than 120adults and nearly 150 childrenattended the presentations,learning more about Hawaiianculture and viewing artifactson display.

ÿIke Pono Hawaiÿi is aprogram within the HawaiianStudies Institute. Established in 1978, HSI serves as aresource center, providingcultural learning opportunitiesand educational services toKamehameha and the largerHawaiian community.

HSI is one of eight depart-ments in the KamehamehaSchools Extension EducationDivision.

Stender replaces KaheleKukea ’63, who has retiredafter a 33-year KS career.

Stender, who had been theschool’s vice principal, is a St.Louis graduate who carries amaster’s in educational admini-stration from the University ofColorado. He is a former high

school social studies and per-forming arts department headat Kamehameha.

Ronelle “Ronnie” KaanapuKopp ’75 has been selected totake Stender’s place as the ele-mentary school vice principal.

Kopp’s teaching careerspans 25 years, including 18years as a kindergarten andfourth-grade instructor atKamehameha. She is a graduateof the University of the Pacificand holds a master of artsdegree in teaching and learningfrom Nova SoutheasternUniversity.

Hawai‘i Campus Ho‘ike Hawai‘i Campus high school students take the floor during “He ‘Ali‘iKu Makani (Steadfast in the Wind), the school’s first-ever ho‘ike heldin May. The entire high school student body played a role in theevent, which featured drama, hula and choral singing to tell a mo‘olelosignificant to the district of Puna. A crowd of 1,800 attended the ho‘ike,held in the new Koai‘a Gymnasium.

Polynesian Voyaging Society andKamehameha Schools offernavigation-teaching resourcesIn March, a KamehamehaSchools and PolynesianVoyaging Society workshopoffered more than 20 teachersfrom across the state a chanceto educate themselves on howbest to teach Polynesian naviga-tion to their students.

The “Polynesian VoyagingSociety Teacher Workshop”featured two guest speakers –Kamehameha Schools Board ofTrustees chairman and masternavigator Nainoa Thompsonand Kapälama Campus MiddleSchool science teacher BarbaraMayer.

“Barbara shared verycreative ideas on how to teachnavigation in really fun ways,and Nainoa had everyonesitting on the edge of theirseats when he spoke about hissailing experiences,” saidKamehameha Schools assistant

archivist Candace Lee.Kamehameha teachers

were joined by colleagues fromother private institutions andboth traditional and charterstate Department of Educationschools. The teachers attendedthe workshop to learn aboutresources available through thePVS Archives, which is housedat the Midkiff Learning Centeron the Kapälama Campus.

The Kamehameha SchoolsArchives is the repository forhistorical documents, papers,memorabilia and artifacts fromthe Polynesian VoyagingSociety.

The PVS Archives offers anumber of resources teacherscan utilize to teach the art andscience of Polynesian naviga-tion and traditions to theirstudents.

activities, participants wererequired to write lesson plansfrom the research they conduct-ed. Those lesson plans areavailable on the Web site.

Literacy Enhancement hosts firstconference on Moloka‘iIn March, Molokaÿi educatorswere invited to attend a literacyconference hosted by the KSExtension Education Division’sLiteracy Enhancement depart-ment with support fromKamehameha staff at theMoloka‘i Regional ResourceCenter.

The conference was thefirst event of its kind on theisland, where more than half ofthe students at all five of itspublic schools are of Hawaiianancestry.

Workshop sessions cover-ed reading topics aligned withthe Hawaiÿi Content andPerformance Standards. As afollow up, a day-long in-servicesession was conducted atKaunakakai Elementary Schoolin July.

K-12 teachers from fourisland schools attended theconference, which was giventhe theme “Mohala Ke Kukui”or unfolding of the kukui.

“We wanted to offer areading conference on Moloka‘i,for Moloka‘i,” said LiteracyEnhancement director AnnaSumida. “We had a total of 25K-12 teachers, and evaluationswere very positive withrequests for more training inthe future.”

Discussions are currentlyunderway with Moloka‘iprincipals regarding a 2005conference.

Peter Simmons named LADHawai‘i regional operationsdirector In July, Kamehameha’s LandAssets Division director NeilHannahs ’69 announced thepromotion of Peter Simmons toregional operations director forHawai‘i island.

Simmons replaces longtimeKS staff member Bob Lindsey’66, who retired in June.

As regional operationsdirector, Simmons will beresponsible for the well-beingof Kamehameha’s conservationand agricultural lands onHawai‘i, which includes enrich-ing opportunities for culturalexpression, educational use ofthe lands, economic growth,ecosystem health and commu-nity development.

Simmons has servedKamehameha for 13 years as asenior land manager after com-ing to the institution fromMcCandless Ranch.

Over the course of histenure, he has managedagribusiness, forestry, pastureand conservation profit centersthat take in some 225,000 acres,or more than half the lands inthe Land Assets Division.

“Peter knows our lands,staff, policies, issues andcommunities,” Hannahs said.“He has earned the respect ofpeople both inside and outsidethe Kamehameha ‘ohanathrough his leadership, com-mitment to mission, competentservice and tremendous workethic.”

Kapalama Easter cross tradition resurrected

In March, the Kamehameha tradition of raising an Easter

cross returned to the Kapälama Campus, thanks to the

efforts of campus Kahu Kordell Kekoa ’80.

“We celebrate Christmas with a lot of different

activities, but we werenÿt doing anything for Easter,” Kekoa

said. “I wanted to get Easter into the minds of our students.”

The Kamehameha cross, 22 feet high by 14 feet wide,

was originally constructed by metal shop students in the

1930s. Each Easter, Kamehameha students would raise the

cross atop Punchbowl as a community service.

The tradition continued until the mid 1990s, when it

was discontinued.

Center from March 29 to April

13. Kahu intends to raise the

cross every year to celebrate

Easter.

“Itÿs been a goal of mine to

get Easter back onto campus,”

Kekoa said. “This cross is a nice

tie to Kamehameha’s past,

Warren Hitz named MauiCampus high school principalKamehameha Schools-Mauiheadmaster Dr. RodChamberlain has announcedthe selection of Dr. Warren Hitzas the new high school princi-pal. Hitz replaces MitchellKalauli ’58, who resigned dueto health reasons.

Hitz brings more than 32 years of experience as ateacher and administrator atPennsylvania’s Milton HersheySchool, the largest residentialpre-K through 12 school in thenation. Hitz was the seniordirector for applied andintegrated learning at MiltonHershey.

“Warren has an impressivetrack record leading the devel-opment and implementation ofhigh school career academies,and has contributed at thenational level in research relatedto applied and experientiallearning,” Chamberlain said.

“Warren can connect visionwith practical details – an impor-tant issue as we complete thelaunch of our career academiesover the next two years.”

The Festival Companies chosento redevelop Royal HawaiianShopping CenterIn May, Kamehameha Schoolsannounced the selection of TheFestival Companies to assist theinstitution in the $55 millionrevitalization of the RoyalHawaiian Shopping Center.

Festival is a full-serviceshopping center developer,property manager and advisoryservices firm based in LosAngeles, Calif. They wereselected because of their arrayof shopping center services and their ability to develop avision to transform and restorea Hawaiian sense of place tothe center.

“Festival’s proposalshowed great sensitivity andunderstanding of this historicaland culturally important asset.We believe that Festival willassist KS in its mission toappropriately steward thisasset and restore the center toits former prominence inWaikïkï,” said KS director ofinvestments Susan Todani.

“We were impressed withthe progress and new ideasdeveloped by Festival sincethis project was approved inFebruary, and we look forwardto working with them as theredevelopment project unfoldsover the next two years,” saidKirk Belsbey, KS vice presidentfor endowment.

Fronting the RoyalHawaiian Hotel and theSheraton Waikïkï, the RoyalHawaiian Shopping Centerconsists of 290,000 square feetof retail and restaurant spacealong a three-block stretch onWaikïkï’s famed KaläkauaAvenue.

This will be the first majorrenovation of the 24-year-oldcenter.

“We view this as a wonder-ful opportunity to restore thecenter as a landmark destina-tion in Waikïkï by combining arich cultural experience withthe best of shopping, diningand entertainment for bothresidents and visitors to enjoy,”said Rosalind Schurgin, princi-pal of The Festival Companies.

“Festival is inspired byKamehameha Schools’ dedica-tion in expressing its culturalheritage and instilling Pauahi’slegacy into the core fabric of theredevelopment. We will carrythe torch of the KS mission.”

Kamehameha Schools rethinking school-year calendar

Another school year has begun, and many Kamehameha Schools

parents have already received a calendar listing important dates

from their child’s school office.

These calendars contain the most current school informa-

tion, and over the years have superseded the information

contained in the Kamehameha Schools four-color calendar

annually printed and distributed by the KS Community Relations

and Communications Division.

As a result, KS is not printing a four-color school calendar

(Aug.–July) this year, but is considering other options. We’ll keep

you posted on future developments.

What do Kamehameha Schools seniors planto do once they graduate?

Results from a recent survey byKamehameha’s Policy Analysis & SystemEvaluation (PASE) department show that KS graduates have many options – with anoverwhelming majority choosing to pursuehigher education.

Each year, Kapälama Campus seniorscomplete a Kamehameha Schools SeniorSurvey before graduation. The survey helpsKamehameha gather information about post-graduation plans, academic preparation andstudent satisfaction.

The findings in this article are based on436 surveys from the class of 2004, and arevery similar to trends documented in recentyears.

Highlights of the survey are listed below.

Post-Graduation Plans• Overall, 97 percent of KS graduates plan

to enter a post-secondary educationalinstitution immediately after graduation.The national rate of college enrollment is 62 percent.

• A total of 78 percent of KS graduates planto start at a four-year college or university.1

Hawai‘i or the U.S. Continent?• Overall, about 55 percent of college-bound

graduates plan to go to school on the U.S.continent; 43 percent plan to stay in Hawai‘i.

• Students bound for a four-year college oruniversity are more likely to relocate to thecontinent, while students who plan toattend a two-year college or technicalschool are more likely to remain in Hawai‘i.

Top Picks• The most common college choice is the

University of Hawai‘i at Mänoa (17 percent).

• Other top picks in Hawai‘i include LeewardCommunity College, Kapi‘olani CommunityCollege and the University Hawai‘i at Hilo.

• Popular choices for out-of-state schoolsinclude the University of Nevada at LasVegas, Loyola Marymount University andOregon State University.

• Fourteen students applied to Ivy Leagueschools (such as Harvard, Princeton, Yale,or Columbia). Eleven applicants wereaccepted to these elite institutions, and onechose to attend.

Intended Majors• Students from the class of 2004 indicated

106 different intended majors.

• Nursing and elementary education are themost popular college majors.

• About 25 percent of students had not decid-ed on a major at the time of the survey.

Degree Aspirations• At the time of graduation, 88 percent of the

class of 2004 aspired to obtain a bachelor’sdegree.

• About 41 percent aspire to go on to obtaina graduate degree.

Academic Achievement and CollegeChoices• On average, students bound for a four-year

institution have higher academicachievement than that of students boundfor a two-year college or technical school.

• Graduates who plan to attend a four-yearcollege or university on the U.S. continenthave a mean grade point average of 3.30

• On a scale of 1 (lowest) to 10 (highest), theaverage satisfaction rate is 8.7.

• Most graduates (97 percent) rate theirsatisfaction levels as a 6 or above.

The impressive aspirations of Kamehamehagraduates is indicative of the benefits ofproviding a supportive environment like thatat Kamehameha Schools – one thatencourages exceptional achievement for itsstudents.

This solid foundation provides aspringboard for future generations of familiesand communities through the service and lifechoices of our graduates that contribute togreater Hawaiian well-being.

Health, Wellness and FamilyEducation teams with HanaCommunity Health Center topilot diabetes education programKamehameha’s Health, Wellnessand Family Education depart-ment recently worked with theHäna Community HealthCenter and local practitioners tocreate a holistic diabetes educa-tion program titled “Kü Koÿolau‘o Mauli Ola.”

Thirty participants enrolledin the pilot session, which ranfrom January through June 2004.

“This program was design-ed to give participants andsupporting family members asolid foundation of culturalfoods, practices and values tobe incorporated into healthylifestyles for both diseasemanagement and prevention,”said program coordinatorSharon Soong Odom ’76 ofHealth, Wellness and FamilyEducation.

“The Native Hawaiiancommunity has the highest rateof diabetes in the state, and thiswas a holistic type programtargeted to Native Hawaiiandiabetics with support fromtheir family members.”

Other project collaboratorsincluded the Hawai‘i chapter ofthe American DiabetesAssociation and the Universityof Hawai‘i School of MedicineDepartment of Native HawaiianHealth Export Project.

Weekly meetings includedhands-on lessons on mealpreparation, group exercise,culturally based educationalsessions and partner lomilomi.

Participants reported anincrease in physical activity,lowered blood sugar levels,more regular visits to theirdoctor, frequent use of lomilomito reduce stress and improvedawareness of nutritional labelswhen food shopping.

Continuing a proud tradition in publishing

Award-winning titles from Kamehameha Schools PressKamehameha Schools Press, the publishing arm of Kamehameha Schools, traces its roots to the schools’

very beginning. In the schools’ early years students learned printing as a craft, producing newspapers and

manuals. The first book identified as a Kamehameha Schools Press publication, Ancient HawaiianCivilization, was published in 1933. In-house printing ended in the 1970s when Kamehameha’s curriculum

shifted from vocational to college preparatory.

Kamehameha Schools Press now issues reference books on Hawaiian history, adult- and student-level

biographies of key figures in Hawaiian history, collections of Hawaiian folklore and curriculum materials

for the teaching of Hawaiian history and studies at various grade levels. One of the press’ efforts is

publishing in Hawaiian language, including historical materials and the issuing of biographical and other

titles in modern Hawaiian translations, supporting and leading in the contemporary revitalization of

Hawaiian as a living spoken language.

Kamehameha Schools is extending its reach by

assisting state Department of Education charter schools with

high populations of Hawaiian students

Out of the 180,000 students who are enrolled in public schools

statewide, roughly 50,000 are of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian

ancestry. As a group, these Hawaiian students’ standardized test scores

and graduation rates are the lowest in the state.

In recent years, some communities, educators, parents and private

organizations have turned to charter schools – semi-autonomous public

schools under contract with the state Board of Education – as an

alternative to traditional public schools.

Currently, there are 27 charter schools in Hawai‘i, with

Kamehameha Schools providing funds and other services to 14 of

them – 12 start-up charter schools and two conversion charter schools.

Although the state allocates school funding based on a per pupil

amount ($5,355 in 2003-04) to both traditional and charter schools,

charter schools face additional challenges in securing sufficient

financial, administrative and facilities support.

To assist these selected charter schools in fulfilling their mission of

providing Hawaiian children a quality education, Kamehameha Schools

is contributing a minimum of $1 for every $4 that the state allocates to

each charter school pupil.

Ho‘olako Like program helpingstart-up charter schoolsAll 12 of the start-up charter schools supported byKamehameha are Hawaiian-focused, emphasiz-ing Hawaiian culture, language, values, practicesand traditions.

Five of them are Hawaiian immersionschools that conduct lessons solely in Hawaiian. In2003-04, they enrolled nearly 900 students, 93percent of them of Hawaiian ancestry.

Collectively, these schools comprise Ho‘olakoLike (to enrich together), a Kamehameha Schoolsinitiative designed to expand services to moreHawaiians, help build capacity in communities todevelop and maintain their own programs andsupport the perpetuation of ‘Ike Hawai‘i (allthings Hawaiian).

“The three Kamehameha campuses can onlyserve a limited number of students,” saidSharlene Chun-Lum ’68, who serves as coordina-tor of Ho‘olako Like. “It makes sense for KS toassist charter schools in order to meet our strate-gic plan goals of reaching more Hawaiians andimproving their well-being.”

To qualify for the Ho‘olako Like program, acharter school must demonstrate certain factors:serve student populations with high percentagesof Hawaiian ancestry; commit to perpetuating‘Ike Hawai‘i; provide quality instruction; evaluateand assess student growth; and involve students’families in educational and community activities.

Each school sets benchmarks such as: meetingHawai‘i Content and Performance Standards;increasing students’ standardized test scores;

increasing daily school attendance; improvingrates of high school completion; and increasingthe number of students pursuing post-higheducation and training.

In addition to per-pupil funds, KS also provides Ho‘olako Like schools with other servicessuch as assistance with curriculum, programevaluation, professional staff development,accreditation and consultation on other fundingresources.

“We want charter schools to succeed, so weadvocate on their behalf with the Department ofEducation and other organizations that have aninterest in helping them,” Chun-Lum said. “Wealso offer them training in administrative functionsto help strengthen their communication, leader-ship and fiscal skills.”

Ke Kula ‘o Nawahıokalani‘opu‘u Ikiinvolved with several partnersKe Kula ‘o Näwahïokalani‘opu‘u Iki LaboratoryPublic Charter School is housed in the formerHenry ‘Opukaha‘ia Elementary School facilities inKea‘au on the island of Hawai‘i on a lush, 10-acreparcel owned by ‘Aha Punana Leo, Inc., one ofNäwahï’s educational partners.

The grounds include a two-acre laboratoryfarm where older students raise pigs and cropslike ‘awa, kukui, banana, kalo, hala, wiliwili, andflowers.

The KS funds enabled Näwahï to hiresummer and regular school teachers, purchaseadditional classroom supplies and provide tuitionassistance to students.

Other support came in the form ofKamehameha staff member Liana Iaea Honda’77, a resource teacher in the Extension EducationDivision’s Literacy Enhancement department,who provided professional development andcurriculum assistance to the school, and helpedparents to understand the value of promotingliteracy in their families.

Kanani DeSa, a librarian at KamehamehaSchools-Hawai‘i, provided library resources andconsultation on planning and networking to helpcreate a library collection.

Kanu o ka ‘Aina adapting tofacilities challengesKanu o ka ‘Aina was the first start-up charter thatKamehameha assisted with funding, beginning inApril 2003.

Its main campus is temporarily located atthe Lalamilo Experimental Station in Waimea onthe island of Hawai‘i. With 150 K-12 students andnot enough classroom space to accommodateeveryone, facilities are one of their biggestchallenges.

As a result, much of their learning takesplace outdoors at sites such as the Kawaihae BoatHarbor and Pu‘umoho, a Department ofHawaiian Home Lands property.

As a start-up school, Näwahï is fortunate tohave appropriate facilities. Many other Ho‘olakoLike schools make do with temporary or cobbledtogether accommodations wherever they can findthem because the state does not provide funds forschool sites or buildings for start-ups.

Hawaiian protocol is observed in varyingdegrees at all Ho‘olako Like schools. At Näwahï,the entire student body and staff turns out towelcome visitors with chant and pule.

A tour of the school revealed orderly class-rooms, polite, eager pupils, friendly and patientstaff and typical school activities: a timed physicaleducation fitness run; hula practice; libraryresearch; a botany lesson using Hawaiian plants;and a course counseling session for students.

All conducted in the Hawaiian language.“We focus on the revitalization of Hawaiian

language and culture, and families interested inestablishing Hawaiian as their primary language,”said Kauanoe Kamanä ’69, Näwahï’s director.

“Another of our partners is Ka Haka ‘Ula oKe‘elikolani, the Hawaiian language college at theUniversity of Hawai‘i at Hilo. Its KahuawaiolaIndigenous Teacher Education program hasprovided us student teachers, and coordinatedexchanges between our students and staff andother indigenous people from around the world.

“We are very thankful to have receivedsupport from Kamehameha Schools. It affords ussome flexibility,” Kamana added. “As a KSgraduate, I think Pauahi would have wantedKamehameha to reach beyond its own campuses.”

Curriculum is project-driven – learningmath, science and report-writing by studyingnearby river, ocean and mountain ecosystems,and taking samples of plants, water andorganisms to analyze in class.

Or, it could be creating a power point pre-sentation on the rich history of communities likeKawaihae through document research and inter-views with küpuna.

“Students taught through project-basedlearning utilizing the environment, the communityand the latest in multimedia technology becomeas comfortable working at the computer as in thetaro patch,” said Ku Kahakalau, Kanu’s director.

In the 2003-04 school year, Kanu was able topurchase – with funds received from KS – asophisticated reading program that utilizes musicand computer activities.

The Waterford Reading Program results arevery promising.

Student evaluations showed that 84 percentof kindergarten through grade two children wereat grade-level reading, with 87 percent of studentsin grades three and four at grade level in readingand writing – significant improvements over theprevious school years.

“The Waterford program is definitely effec-tive, even with very low-performing students,”said Kahakalau.

Kanu has the distinction of having one of thehighest rates – about 94 percent – of studentattendance of all public schools statewide.

This summer, Hälau Ku Mana moved into itsdream site, the old Paradise Park location inMänoa, with the help of the property owner andthe Hawai‘i Cultural Preservation Council.

There, they will have much more space andthere will be a short walk to Lyon Arboretum,where students go weekly to study botany andwork on the restoration of a lo‘i to raise kalo onthe banks of ‘Aihualama Stream.

There’s much to do: remove debris such asrocks and ginger, clear paths, build steps into theslope leading to the river and rebuild the terracewalls. Then, dam the stream water above the lo‘i,and divert the dam water to ‘auwai (ditches) thatflow into the taro patch.

Different mala (gardens) are also planned,where pua and other hula plants and Hawaiianmedicinal herbs will be grown.

“We don’t want charter schools to just havea reputation for chanting, dancing hula andgetting dirty in the lo‘i,” said Hälau Ku Manadirector Keola Nakanishi ’92. “Academicstandards are important, and we spend as muchtime on math, language, social studies and artforms as we do in the lo‘i.”

Charter schools indeed servingHawaiian studentsOn the 2004 Hawai‘i State Assessment, studentsin Hawai‘i charter schools scored higher thanstudents in regular public schools, except foreighth-grade students. The tests were givenstatewide in grades 3, 5, 8 and 10.

Similarly, parents turn out in the high 90percents for ‘ohana gatherings, which includeparent conferences and other school functions,and many volunteer at the school or participate infund-raising efforts. One parent logged 840 hoursof service.

Halau Ku Mana moves into dream location For the past three years Hälau Ku Mana (strive forthe life force) operated out of two main locationsin Mänoa, O‘ahu.

The first was the Kamakakuokalani Centerfor Hawaiian Studies at the University of Hawai‘iat Mänoa where students had access to itsHawaiian collections resource room and the PapaLo‘i Kanewai, a native plant refuge.

The secondary location was the AthertonYMCA on University Avenue which providedclassroom, office and multi-purpose spaces.

Additional learning sites utilized regularlyincluded He‘eia fishpond – a KamehamehaSchools ‘Äina Ulu program site – MaunalahaValley, Lyon Arboretum, Kualoa, where thesailing canoe Kanehunamoku was often housed,and the Makali‘i, a voyaging canoe that allowedstudents to experience sailing and acquirenavigational skills.

On the Stanford Achievement Test, morecharter school students registered “above average”than the statewide percentage in regular publicschools at all grade levels.

Working with the charter schools for twoyears now, Chun-Lum has seen and heard of manypromising results in these schools.

“Charter schools face huge challenges on adaily basis – from dealing with some studentswho transfer to their schools unable to read at allor who have histories at their former schools ashabitual truants, to having to navigate a maze ofregulations and requirements when seeking state,federal and private funding resources.

coordinator of the Kaua‘i Regional Resource Center, offering

island residents the latest information and assistance with

Aana-Nakahara, along with office coordinator Kuulei

Bender Ho ’72, holds informational meetings and workshops on

most everything Kamehameha offers to the Kaua‘i community –

including preschool to post-high financial aid; admission to the

Kapälama Campus and to the two Kamehameha preschools

located on the island; summer Enrichment programs; and even

helping families register with the Ho‘oulu Hawaiian Data

Center.

“Our job is about knowing our community and helping our

Kaua‘i families take advantage of the educational opportunities

that Kamehameha offers,” Aana-Nakahara said. “We’re always

trying to discover ways of helping at least one more student or

one more family benefit from Pauahi’s legacy.”

As the person responsible for interviewing Kaua‘i applicants

to grades 7-12 at Kapälama, consider that Aana-Nakahara has

dealt with practically every Kaua‘i family that has applied a child

to Kamehameha Schools for nearly the past two decades.

Clearly, she is the face of Kamehameha on Kaua‘i.

And with Kamehameha’s strategic goal of extending its

reach to more Hawaiian learners, Aana-Nakahara’s job is getting

Ho‘olauna program debuts on Kaua‘i

This summer, Kamehameha’s ExtensionEducation Division (EED) unveiled Ho‘olaunaKaua‘i, a week-long boarding experience modeledafter the popular Explorations program and opento non-KS sixth-graders residing on Kaua‘i.

Forty-three Kaua‘i students attended a springbreak pilot program and another 35 childrenattended two summer sessions housed at theAloha Beach Resort in Wailua. The place-basedlearning program featured daily educationalexcursions coupled with morning and eveningclasses on Hawaiian culture, language, valuesand history.

Student outings included trips to theHanapëpë Salt Ponds, the National TropicalBotanical Gardens, Köke‘e State Park, Pa ‘Ula‘ula(Russian Fort), the ahupua‘a of Waipä to studywith the Waipä Foundation and to historical heiauin the Wailua area.

The experience culminated with a Fridayevening hö‘ike where students performed newlylearned island oli, mele and hula before family andfriends.

“The parents we’ve talked with thoughtHo‘olauna Kaua‘i was just wonderful. But it’s anew program, and we’re still trying to get theword out and find ways to increase studentnumbers,” Aana-Nakahara said.

Kapälama Campus dormitory advisor MaileAndrade, a 30-year Kaua‘i resident, served as thecoordinator for Ho‘olauna Kaua‘i. Andrade saidshe’s sold on the benefits of place-based learning.

“For Hawaiian people, these places areimportant for who they are and where they comefrom,” she said. “As these students start to under-stand about these places, the hope is they will takesome ownership in that, and become interested incaring for and taking pride in this land.”

Andrade said she was pleased to see theprogram come to Kaua‘i.

“Sometimes, as a Kaua‘i person, I think wefeel like we’re being left out, since the other islandshave Kamehameha campuses and we don’t,” shesaid. “But we tell our kids that if you go to any

one of our programs, you are a Kamehamehastudent for that week, and you are sharing in apart of Princess Pauahi’s legacy.

“So programs like this one are very impor-tant for this island. It’s great that KamehamehaSchools can help these kids to remember whothey are as Hawaiians and why that’s important.”

Kamehameha Scholars BeginsSecond Year on Kaua‘i

Another new EED initiative is to helping meet theneed of serving more Hawaiian youth on theGarden Isle. The program is called KamehamehaScholars, and in its initial year 2003, incomingseventh-graders primarily from Hawai‘i’s publicschools were invited from Kauaÿi, West Hawaiÿi,and Leeward Oÿahu, regions known to have ahigh population of Native Hawaiians.

Participants are randomly selected from thepool of applicants to the Kapälama Campus andare invited to Kamehameha Scholars with theunderstanding that commitment on their part andthe part of their parents or guardians is demonstra-ted during the six years of the program, or fromgrade seven through 12.

The program follows the child while he orshe attends his or her regular school with an arrayof offerings, including: group and individualacademic and career counseling; mentoringservices; service learning activities; Hawaiiancultural enhancement experiences; career-buildingand life skills workshops; post-secondaryplanning activities; and technology trainingopportunities.

Most of the newly selected KamehamehaScholars spend a week boarding on the KapälamaCampus for a New Scholar Orientation SummerProgram, experiencing a variety of ventures,including team building activities, visitingKamehameha ‘Äina Ulu program sites, touringthe Bernice Pauahi Bishop Heritage Center, learn-ing about navigation at the Hawaiÿi MaritimeMuseum, and taking part in Hawaiian culturalactivities.

“The overall goal of this program is to extendKamehameha Schools’ reach and Pauahi’s legacy,”said Kamehameha Scholars director Norma Kop.“To accomplish this, our focus is to increase theeducational success of our children.”

Kop said the scholars are part of theKamehameha ÿohana, and are valued as students.“In that respect, they are part of our institution,and we encourage them to consider the ways inwhich Hawaiian values can be used in dailyliving and in helping them chart their path tobecome increasingly successful.”

Parents Help.”The workshop offered families of incoming

seventh-grade students an introduction toKamehameha Middle School and provided anopportunity to meet Kapälama Campus counselorsand dormitory advisors. Workshop sessionscovered topics such as boarding, adolescence,learning and reading strategies, time managementand note-taking.

“I think what we accomplished was to helpmake the parents feel more trusting about sendingtheir kids away, and they enjoyed having a chanceto meet the people who are going to be workingwith their kids,” Aana-Nakahara said.

Families appreciative ofKamehameha efforts

Kaua‘i resident Leland Kahawai ’82 attended boththe Ho‘olauna Kaua‘i Hö‘ike and the summertransition project workshop. His son Jordan hasbeen accepted to Kapälama and started seventhgrade this fall.

“I was so impressed with this Ho‘olaunaprogram. The kids participated in a lot of activitiesand I’m amazed at how much they can learn inone week,” Kahawai said. “I really like the factthat more Kamehameha programs are comingover to Kaua‘i. We’ve been sending Jordan toExplorations and Computer Camp, but to have thekids learning about their own island is just great.”

Kahawai was a fan of the new orientationworkshop as well.

“That was really good,” he said. “We got tomeet the dorm advisors, the principal and thecounselors and they really gave us a lot of goodinformation. It makes me a little more comfortableknowing what my son is going to be doing, andwe really got a firsthand look at what’s going tobe involved.”

“We never thought weÿd be on Kaua‘isending Jordan to Kamehameha,” added Leland’swife Susan. “But I also think itÿs wonderful thatKamehameha is trying to reach the children whomay not be attending their campuses. ThisHo‘olauna program is a great way to do just that, and I’m glad we were able to take advantageof it.”

Of the 105 Kamehameha Scholars in theinaugural class, 17 hailed from Kauaÿi. In its sec-ond year, 16 additional scholars from the islandjoined the program.

Kamehameha Scholars has so much poten-tial, in fact, that two more regions have beenadded to the second cohort – Windward O‘ahuand Honolulu – with a target goal of recruiting200 students this year from the five regions.

“One thing Kamehameha Schools should bevery proud of is the fact this program is respond-

ing to the element ofdepth and long-termcommitment for eachHawaiian child.Kamehameha Scholarsis a six-year program,”Kop added.

“When parentshear our trustees talk-ing about the class of2009 Kamehameha

Scholars, and we’re singing ÿSons of Hawaiÿi,’ ourschool song – some parents and guardians getemotional, and I think it’s because they really feel that we’re demonstrating a commitment totheir children.”

More Kapalama slots opening forKaua‘i students

The opening of Kamehameha Schools campuseson Hawai‘i and Maui has had a beneficial effecton Kaua‘i students who apply to the KapälamaCampus.

“Since Kapälama is not bringing in studentsfrom Maui or East Hawai‘i, that has allowed formore Kaua‘i kids to have an opportunity to attendKapälama,” Aana-Nakahara said.

“For this school year, we brought in 23 newseventh-grade students and 24 new ninth-gradestudents, where before we’d bring in eight forseventh grade and maybe three or four for ninthgrade. More Kaua‘i students are now beingaccepted to Kapälama than ever before.”

Of the 56 Kaua‘i children who applied toseventh grade at Kapälama, 23 were accepted and 22 were offered a chance to become aKamehameha Scholar – meaning that 45 of the 56 children who applied were offered some typeof service from Kamehameha Schools.

On March 19, 2004 more than

150 people gathered at the Waimea Brewing

Company restaurant in Kirkland, Wash., to

experience a live broadcast of the 82nd Annual

Kamehameha Schools Song Contest.

The pilot test broadcast used VOIP

technology, or video over Internet protocol, which

allowed the televised image from KHON-2 in

Honolulu to ride in real time across the Internet

through a Verizon DSL line and into a computer

which projected a digital image onto a screen.

The project offered a glimpse at how

Kamehameha Schools can use technology to offer

Hawaiian educational and cultural video

programming worldwide via the Internet.

By all accounts, the evening was a smashing success, with kudosextended to web development manager Bruce Lum ’65 andcommunity relations manager Dawn Farm Ramsey ’71 ofKamehameha’s Community Relations and Communications Group;Henry Meyer, director of the KS Distance Learning Department;data communications professional Wayne Wong ’69of Seattle; and Kamehameha Schools Alumni AssociationNorthwest Region president Stan Dahlin ’61 and treasurer DanKaopuiki ’50.

“The important thing is we were all there as one Kamehamehafamily who, as graduates, parents of graduates, or as extended‘ohana, we reached back in time and remembered past performanceswhen we or our children took center stage and sang our traditionalHawaiian songs,” said KS Alumni Relations director Gerry VintaJohansen ’60, who coordinated the event and helped bring a specialHawai‘i flavor to Kirkland.

Also in attendance that evening was Renee Mailer McDonald’96, who shares her thoughts on the event for the benefit of theKamehameha Schools ‘ohana.

Broadcasting more than just Song Contest

A live Kamehameha Schools SongContest broadcast to NorthwestRegion alumni reminds viewers of thebeauty of the Hawaiian culture

When I walked into the WaimeaBrewing Company, I wasn’t surewhat to expect – or how moved I

would be – by sitting with my fellowKamehameha Schools alumni and re-living SongContest thousands of miles away on a Fridaynight in Kirkland, Wash.

I sat there with my husband Matt – who hasnever been to Hawai‘i – and my aunty CherieMailer, who is a Punahou graduate, and we allhad a great time regardless of our connection toSong Contest or Kamehameha Schools.

My aunty said she was reminded of justhow special Hawaiian music is, how beautifulthe Hawaiian culture is and how much it meantto her to be included in the night even thoughshe was a Punahou graduate.

(She also was thankful that the event washeld at WBC, where they served real Hawaiianfood. Me too!)

At the end of the night, my husband toldme that he finally understood why I had such astrong feeling for my school and my home ofHawai’i.

Matt said that watching these Kamehamehakids sing made him feel like he too wanted ourfuture kids to go to a school that was so rich inculture and so committed to instilling a sense of honor, pride and respect in the student body,their families and in essence an entirecommunity.

It meant a lot to me that he was touched byour culture even though he’s never been able towitness it firsthand.

I had a similar reaction as my aunt andhusband, but I felt something more – it was alonging and a thirst for more Hawaiian culture.I’ve been away from the islands for so long thatI’ve forgotten how good it feels to be in a roomfull of Hawaiians – whether or not it’s in yourblood.

The music, the food, the storytelling, thesmell of plumeria and tuberose and the feeling of

hundreds of hugs was overwhelming andreminded me of just how important it was forme to stay connected to my people.

The night was more than Song Contest – itwas a rebirth of my connection to my home, anda call to all Hawaiians to join together to keepour culture alive and well.

I truly appreciate the efforts of the alumniwho gave their time and effort to make this nighta reality for so many of us Hawaiians away fromhome. More importantly, I thank them for open-ing up the night to people who aren’t necessarily“Hawaiian” – like my husband and aunty.

I was born into theculture, and thanks toKamehameha I was able toembrace and learn more aboutmy culture than I’d everdreamed. But to see the joyand understanding on some-one’s face – someone who hasnever been to Hawai‘i –watching Song Contest andgenuinely becoming interestedin the Hawaiian culture reallyoverwhelmed me.

To see WBC patrons whosnuck in to see the show just by chance and hear themcomment on how beautiful thechildren sang made my ownheart sing.

My teacher back atKamehameha, kumu JayKauka ’76, used to say that the most effective way to keep our culture alive was to shareit, and he was exactly right.

On this Friday night,through the efforts of the cur-rent Kamehameha students, the Kamehameha alumni‘ohana and participants new to the Kamehameha“experience,” we did just that –and I can’t wait to see where we go from here.

With a theme of “E Pili Pa‘a Käkou – Binding Together,” the 15th

Annual Kamehameha Schools Alumni Week Celebration was held

June 6-13 on the Kapälama Campus.

More than 4,000 graduates attended at least one of the week’s

nearly 20 activities, with 260 alumni choosing

to enjoy the event from the comfort of the

Kapälama dormitories.

Graduates with class years ending in “4s”

and “9s” took in some new activities this year,

such as the Hospitality Dinner for Boarders,

a Genealogy Workshop, Campus Bus Tour,

a “BBQ, Bingo and KS Trivia” luncheon and

Water Aerobics.

Highlights of the week included the

culminating Alumni Lü’au, put on by the class of 1975 and attended

by a full house of 1,300 hungry members of the KS ‘ohana, and the

always special Talent Night.

“This year’s Talent Night entries were exceptional, with takeoffs

from Broadway, the movie “Birds of Paradise” and a nostalgic look at

the 1940s and 1950s,” said Alumni Relations director Gerry Vinta

Johansen ’60. “Alumni Week 2004 was the success that it was because

of the many helping hands that made it possible. The pieces of the

puzzle came together to create the final result – a picture perfect

landscape of events.”

Next year’s Alumni Week, featuring class years ending in “5s”

and “0s,” is slated for June 5-12, 2005.

“It will be a time to reconnect with classmates, our alma mater

and others in the Kamehameha family,” Johansen said. “A time to add

another chapter in our album of memories where mälama, lökahi and

the spirit of aloha for each other flows freely.”

In his senior year, they elected him the student body president of theKamehameha Schools for Boys.

A half century later, look backover Bob Worthington’s professionalcareer – and it’s easy to see what anexcellent choice those Kamehamehastudents made so many years ago.

Worthington retired fromKamehameha Schools in January of 2003, leavingbehind an indelible mark on the history of theinstitution.

Hired in 1974 as the director of boarding, in1978 he was promoted to director of campusfinancial aid (K-12 programs) and from 1989 untilhis retirement served as director of financial aidand scholarships.

During Worthington’s tenure, Kamehameha’sfinancial aid program grew tremendously in bothresources and services.

In 1989, Kamehameha made more than 3,500financial aid awards totaling more than $3 millionto learners mostly involved with Kamehamehapreschool through grade 12 and summer schoolprograms.

By 2001, Worthington’s department wasadministering more than 15,500 annual awardstotaling more than $25.4 million – a growth ofmore than 700 percent in monies awarded andmore than 335 percent in recipient impact.

Add in the years (1978-1989) Worthingtonoversaw the distribution of campus financial aid,and the overall totals are staggering – more than

150,000 awards totaling morethan $200 million given outduring his years atKamehameha.

“When we started out, we were just Kamehamehafinancial aid, but we ended upbeing a clearinghouse of varioustypes of financial aid,”Worthington said.

Those various types of aidincluded collaborations withentities like the East WestCenter and Alu Like, commu-

nity endowments set up by people like formerKamehameha principal Gladys Brandt and otherprivate scholarships, and federal scholarshipstargeted at Hawaiian students seeking highereducation and studying in health fields.

Funds were also recruited from otherHawaiian agencies like the Office of HawaiianAffairs and the Department of Hawaiian HomeLands.

“The program made a tremendous differencewithin the Native Hawaiian community,”Worthington said. “It gave more people access tohigher education, helping them become success-ful in contemporary society and providing a morepositive identity about being Hawaiian.”

Claire Pruet ’60 worked alongsideWorthington for more than 20 years, serving ashis primary associate as coordinator of financialaid and data systems. The two formed animpressive team, and Pruet continues to seek hisguidance on a national level – she’s now retired

In 1990, Worthington wasofficially designated asKamehameha’s protocol officer.

“When I became president in1988, we were just beginning toreconnect with our cousins in theSouth Pacific, and Bob was a verykey person for Kamehameha inmaking that reconnection,” saidKapälama Campus headmasterand Kamehameha Schoolspresident Dr. Michael Chun ’61.

“Bob was our charge d’affaire,or the lead person who would setup everything for our delegation,”Chun said. “I was our titularhead, and I’d speak and representus, but Bob was the real head of the delegation,”Chun recalled with a chuckle.

Chun said Kamehameha gained as muchfrom hosting these South Pacific groups oncampus as from traveling to the far away islands.

“What we saw were our cousins in the SouthPacific more in touch with their culture than ourKamehameha students were, than I was, than weas Hawaiians had been. We met people who hada foot solidly in each of their cultures, and Ithought that’s where we need to somehow get to,because most of our students have both feet inthe Western culture.

“Those exchanges were important for theschool, because they helped educate our kids andthey helped educate our leadership. And I canstill remember, that every once in a while, we’dhear the sound of drums beating on campus,coming from down the street at Bob Worthington’shouse – at 2 o’clock in the morning!”

Chun expressed respect for Worthington as aperson and as a coworker.

“Bob’s command and support of the infor-mation and services provided by Kamehamehagave credibility to the work we were doing,”Pruet said. “He served Kamehameha and thecommunity in a special way.”

Pruet said that as a leader, Worthington wasa keen and compassionate decision-maker.

“In the midst of running a program that islabor intensive, you’re dealing with individualcases. Bob dealt with appeals, and rendered manyfair decisions. When the audits came, we alwayspassed with flying colors.

“We did our best to meet the legacy of theprincess – and at the same time, we were notgoing to let the community down.”

Worthington’s contributions to Kamehamehainvolved much more than running a boomingfinancial aid department.

After marrying a Cook Islands resident hemet while working as a communication relationsofficer at the East West Center in the 1960s,Worthington ran a business in the Cook Islandsfor several years before coming to work forKamehameha, becoming a familiar face togovernment officials on the South Pacific island.

Worthington’s diplomatic skills wouldeventually lead the U.S. Department of State toname him the Cook Islands Honorary Counsel in1985, a position he still holds.

Using his government connections,Worthington led Kamehameha Schools delegationsacross the South Pacific, attending events like thePacific Arts Festival in Australia in 1988 and theCook Islands in 1993, the 1990 Waitangi TreatyCommemoration in New Zealand and the 1992Taputapuatea Marae ceremonies in Raiatea,French Polynesia. Other stops included trips toWestern Samoa, Japan, Rapa Nui and Tahiti.

“Because of Bob’s knowledge and relation-ships with other Polynesian people and theirgovernments, he became Kamehameha’s liaison/ambassador to the South Pacific,” explainedKapälama Campus high school principal TonyRamos ’58, who spent many years asWorthington’s neighbor residing on theKapälama Campus.

Ramos said Worthington was a master ofcultural and diplomatic protocol. “It was throughhis effort and persistent diligence that studentexchange programs began with a Maori school inNew Zealand and with schools in the CookIslands, American Samoa and Tahiti. Thoseprograms really enhanced the awareness andunderstanding of our students and faculty of thepride and richness of other Polynesian nationsand their cultures.”

As a two-yearstaff member and theeditor-in-chief, suchattention to your worktakes your breath away.

Each succeedingissue received moreattention than the former, and I am proud toannounce that we completely sold out – therewere no extra copies available anywhere – ourApril Fool’s issue, which was a comedic hit.

What a journalist’s dream! While the Valentine’s Day center spread was

risky, it was something I had to do. The decisioncame from my gut instinct… and I had to climbout of the “box” and listen to it.

After all, one of Kamehameha’s greatestattributes is its support for students in helpingthem cultivate confidence in themselves. Withassistance from teachers like Jim Slagel, AbrahamMokunui ’82, Elizabeth Truesdell and SenoraOsserman, the school’s atmosphere is conduciveto opening discussion and sharing opinions.

Listening to gut instinct is not about breakingthe rules – it’s not even about rules. Some peoplego through life trying to silence their inner voicethat is screaming at them to do somethingdifferent, which more often than not, defiesconventional behavior.

Kamehameha Schools motivated me to pumpup the volume of my inner voice and build thecourage to listen to it. So far, I have listened to all of my gut instincts, and consequently, I haveno regrets.

It doesn’t matter whether or not my decisionswere successful in the eyes of others. What mattersis that I jumped out of the “box” and was braveenough to listen to my heart.

Despite the school uniforms, the rules, andthe specifications, Kamehameha Schools still allowsits students the freedom to find who they are.

Thank you, Kamehameha, for granting me aclean record with no regrets.

No‘u Revilla, daughter of 2003-04 Association of Teachersand Parents (ATP) president Debbie Revilla, will bestudying journalism this fall at New York University.

I never would have thoughtthat having nothing of something would be agood thing. But I was wrong.

As I look back on graduation, I realize that Ihave no regrets…and it couldn’t feel sweeter.

Of course, there were many things that couldpossibly take the form of a regret.

For instance, in our Valentine’s Day 2004issue of Ka Mö‘ï, the center spread – a new elementthat I spearheaded this year as the editor-in-chief– featured a baseball diamond graphic with astory headlined “The Dating Game.”

The article offered advice and counseling ongoing from “first base to home plate” with side-bars offering points of view from the girls’ andboys’ teams as well as what students should lookfor in a Valentine.

At the time, Kamehameha Schools hadalready been put into the limelight with thestudent video scandal, so my “flagrant display of sex” was accosted as inappropriate.

Regret? Absolutely not. As a staff reporter during my junior year at

Kamehameha, I learned just how little interestthe student body had in reading Ka Mö‘ï. I wouldwalk through the building halls and peek intoclassrooms to see how well our issues were doing,only to see them being discarded after a glance atthe front page.

As editor-in-chief, my main objective was tochange student appreciation for their newspaper.Not only did I want my classmates to look at theheadlines and browse the captions, but I alsowanted them to want to read Ka Mö‘ï.

Progressively, student readership increasedas we generated more and more issues. Upondistributing the Valentine’s Day issue, studentinterest was peaking, and the “Dating Game”center spread received a remarkable response.

That day, when I walked through the halls, I saw people devouring Ka Mö‘ï with attention –and handing me compli-ments on the newspaper!While stuffing their bagswith copies so they couldshow their parents, peoplewere telling their friends,

“You’ve got to see the new

a Bronze Star for valor, and aBronze Star for meritorious service.David taught at the University ofHawai‘i from 1973-1976 and was an executive assistant to Sen.Daniel Inouye from 1976-1990. Hehas served as a trustee with QueenLili‘uokalani Trust since 1978.

On the occasion of his 80thbirthday, the Hawai‘i Senate andHouse of Representatives present-ed certificates of resolution honor-ing Louis K. “Buzzy” Agard Jr. ’42for his “tireless work over the pastsix decades for causes of the NativeHawaiian people.” Louis wasrecognized for helping to protectand preserve the land rights of theHawaiian community; for hisprolific writing on Hawaiianissues, including Native Hawaiians– Their Concerns and Status, andPolitics, Hawai‘i Sandalwood Treesand Hope; and for ongoing serviceto organizations such as theCouncil of Hawaiian Organizations,where he is vice president, and theNative Hawaiian Advisory Counciland the Hawaiian EnvironmentalAlliance – where he is treasurer for both organizations. “UncleBuzzy” is also a former member ofthe Lili‘uokalani Childrenÿs CenterAdvisory Council, the Congress of the Hawaiian People, the AlohaAssociation, the Hawaiian HomesCommission and is a formerpresident of the Hawai‘i FishingBoat Association as well. Andthough he may be 80 now, Louis is still employed at the Office ofHawaiian Affairs, where he hasserved in a variety of capacities fornearly eight years.

1930sFormer Kamehameha SchoolsIndustrial Education departmenthead Walter Tuck Chang ’39 writesthat he is slowly recovering from astroke he endured five years ago.Under Chang’s guidance,Kamehameha Schools was the firsthigh school in Hawai‘i to offerAutoCAD training in its curricu-lum, and Walter’s 1984 seniorarchitectural drafting class drewthe original plans for the KapälamaCampus’ $3.5 million IndustrialEducation complex. Chang, whowas selected one of the 2,000Outstanding Intellectuals of the21st Century by the InternationalBiographical Centre in January2004, said that quite simply“Kamehameha Schools has beenmy life.” Kamehameha Schoolspresident and Kapälama Campusheadmaster Dr. Michael Chunsaid, “Because of Walter’s visionthen, our students now have accessto the very best in design technol-ogy, and Kamehameha owes Waltera huge mahalo for his leadership.”Chang spent 26 years on theKapälama Campus.

1940sMembers of the Class of 1941gathered at the Kapälama Campusin April to welcome David MerrittPeters as an honorary member oftheir class. David graduated fromthe United States Military Academyin 1946 with a degree in engineer-ing. He remained in the Army until 1973 after service in WorldWar II, Korea and Vietnam. He hasreceived many military decorationsincluding the Silver Star for actionin Vietnam, four Legions of Merit,

trees on their 6,700 acres of land.They’ve planted pines, RockyMountain juniper, Eastern red cedar,plum caragena, sumac…”you nameit, we’ve probably planted it,” saysRobert. After graduating fromKamehameha, Ilona attended TexasState College for Women where shemajored in art education. Most ofher working career was spent as astockbroker while also raising fivechildren and assisting her husbandin his many pursuits. One of themain goals of Ilona and Robert hasbeen to create a haven for all formsof wildlife and to plant a forest onthe prairie on their little section ofearth. They have done just that.Ilona and Robert recently celebrated59 years of marriage.

1970sIn July, more than 20 classmateshelped Sgt. Maj. Curt Lam Ho ’70celebrate his retirement from theU.S. Army after 30 years of service.The graduates joined a crowd offamily, friends and militarycomrades at the 5-acre Kahalu‘uresidence of Curt’s aunt and uncle,enjoying lots of ‘ono Hawaiian foodand music. Curt entered the Armyin August 1974, and by 1981, hadcompleted the military intelligenceanalyst course and was assigned tothe 8th Infantry Division inMannheim, West Germany. Hereturned to Fort Benning, Georgiain 1983 as an MI instructor. Curt’smilitary education also includedstudies in long-range reconnais-sance, intensive Spanish languagetraining and leadership develop-ment. Curt’s subsequent dutystations and deployments includedstops in Korea, Saudi Arabia, Iraq,Kuwait, Panama, New York andended in Hawai‘i with his lastposition as senior enlisted advisor,Joint Intelligence Center Pacific. In retirement, Curt says he’ll havemore time to help out with his classof 1970 activities, at least until his

wife, Air Force Master Sgt. DanetteMarie Robbins Lam Ho, retires inDecember of this year. Curt hastwo sons, Jason and Jonathan, anda 2-year-old grandson, Jeziah.

In April, Kirk Durante ’70and wife Phyllis Campbell ’73traveled to Washington, D.C. toreceive Booz Allen Hamilton’s(BAH) most prestigious honor, the Values in Practice (VIP) award.Besides receiving a cash award,Kirk and Phyllis enjoyed a freevacation cruise to Alaska thissummer. As BAH’s senior defenseanalyst, Kirk next travels toDjibouti, Africa to transition a $1.4 million project he was justawarded. Kirk retired from the U.S.Army in early 2002, and in April ofthat year joined BAH-Hawai‘i tooversee change management andstrategic communications work forvarious military clients… CraigFong ’70 sends aloha from Singaporewhere he has been living with histwo daughters, Alexandria andXenia since 1992; except for twoyears living in Bangkok, Thailandfrom May 2000 – May 2002. Thetime in Thailand passed veryquickly when he worked for theRoyal Orchid Sheraton Hotel astheir director of sales and market-ing. In May 2002, Craig joinedMeritus Hotels & Resorts as itscorporate director of sales andmarketing, a Singapore-based hotelmanagement company that ownsand manages deluxe city and resorthotels throughout Asia. He reports

Three members of KS ’96were sworn in and admitted to theHawai‘i State Bar in November2003. They were Kanoe Kane,Kimberly Iopa and Shaundra Liu,all recent graduates of the WilliamS. Richardson School of Law at theUniversity of Hawai‘i at Mänoa.

A former choir member of theHonolulu Boy Choir is now itschoral director. Kaimi Pelekai ’96has been the choir’s director since1999 and says that being in thechoir is much more than just sing-ing. Kaimi interjects a sense ofpride in the boys as they developself confidence, self esteem, andteam building while they rehearseand perform. Kaimi says that hefinds “real joy” working with theboy choir and that it’s exciting to

see the boys grow. Kaimi worksfull-time as a firefighter with theHonolulu Fire Department.

KS ’97 is currently workingwith KS ’96 to plan a joint fund-raiser in the fall, possibly a nightout at Oceans Nightclub or asimilar venue, with ‘ono grinds and great music. 2000sLaua‘e Damien Gouveia ’02 wasrecently selected to participate inthe International Mission onMedicine in South Africa from Mayto June 2004. Laua‘e joined 80 othercollege and university studentsfrom throughout the United Statesinterested in medical careers for aculturally enriching experiencedesigned to add to each participant’spersonal knowledge, as well asacademic and pre-professionalprofiles. Laua‘e experienced dia-logues with members of the Zulunation and explored medicinalcustoms and traditions of healingwithin their community, in additionto examining the efforts being madeto stop the spread of HIV/AIDS.He also met with Doctors WithoutBorders, discovering firsthand thevital role of international non-governmental organizations inproviding worldwide medical relief.Laua‘e is a student at CreightonUniversity in Omaha, Neb.

Cathryn Masuda ’02 complet-ed her second year of studies at theUniversity of Southern California,where she is a member of an all-female a capella group called the“Sirens.” In April, the club hostedthe fourth annual Absolute ACapella competition. The competi-tion was the last concert of the yearfor the Sirens. One of the songsperformed, “Sway” by Bic Runga,featured Cathryn as soloist. Cathrynis a psychology major at USC.

Hawai‘i Junior Miss 2004 EmiManuia ’04 earned a $5,000 scholar-ship by winning the fitness categoryin preliminary competition at the2004 America’s Junior Miss Pageant,held in Mobile, Ala., in June.Shannon Essenpreis – Miss Texas –was selected the 2004 America’sJunior Miss.

of Human Services is currently recruiting foster and

adoptive parents to care for Hawai‘i’s keiki.

In 2003, there were more than 5,000 children in

the foster care system; approximately 43 percent, or

1,621 children, were of Hawaiian or part Hawaiian

ancestry. There is a drastic shortage of families to

care for these children.

The PRIDE Program’s purpose is to recruit

families to be licensed to foster or adopt in the state

of Hawai‘i, train the families to be prepared to care

for children who have been exposed to an array of

challenges and assess the capability of the family’s

commitment to the process of loving and healing

children who have experienced loss, grief and pain.

“Bob is a very intelligent person who under-stands issues quite well – he’s just a good thinker,”Chun said. “He has another quality – and maybe it’sold school – but he has a humility about himself.When he disagreed with you, he understood thetimeliness of sharing a concern and making a point.

“He wasn’t a ÿyes’ man, he’d make his pointand he could get intense in a debate. But in hisdemeanor I always felt that he was a gentleman, andI always appreciated that.”

“While a lot of what Bob did put him in thelimelight, most of what he did was behind thescenes,” Ramos added. “I have not known him toever seek recognition for hisaccomplishments. Hedeserves the highest praiseand recognition for thesuccessful outcomes of hisprograms, and from thepeople he has helped andpromoted.”

Worthington said hislow-key style was a mainreason for his success.

“It’s amazing what anindividual can accomplish ifhe or she doesn’t worry about who gets the credit,”he said. “To me, the bottom line is that the programyou’re working for should speak for itself. But I thinkmy greatest accomplishment was providing a servantrelationship to my staff, the students and to themission of Pauahi.

“And no matter where someone works, I thinkyou should always exhibit and practice integrity inspite of the pressures and woes that one may gothrough. It’s so important to stay with principles likeintegrity and trust.”

“Bob took on his job with his body, mind andspirit,” Pruet said. “He worked very hard with thosegovernments to clear the path for our students. Itwasn’t easy, but he had the government experienceand he had the skills.

“Bob has a romance with the Pacific, and he hasthe vision and the magnitude of a Pacific Islander,”Pruett said. “There’s so much respect and aloha forBob out there. He exemplified a real leader withhumility. He was so ha‘aha‘a – it was real with him.

“He was the kind of leader you wanted runningyour department. He was direct and aggressive, andnot afraid of anything. It wasn’t dictatorial or domi-neering, he just provided a real strong direction.

Martha Poepoe Hohu

Former Kamehameha Schools music teacherand 1925 graduate Martha Poepoe Hohudied June 12 at the age of 97.

A composer, arranger, conductor, singerand organist, Hohu served for 67 years aschoir director at Kaumakapili Church, andalso directed choral groups in Hana, Maui, in Kalaupapa, Moloka‘i, and at HawaiianElectric Co. and the Honolulu PoliceDepartment.

She was best known for her work incompiling United Church of Christ Hawaiianhymnals.

Hohu also spent 25 years working as aguide at the Bishop Museum and served 18years as a docent at Washington Palace. Shewas also a Hawaiian language, history and‘ukulele instructor.

In 1993, she received a Nä HöküHanohano award for lifetime achievementfrom the Hawaiian Academy of RecordingArts and was earlier honored with a Hawai‘iAloha Award from the Hawai‘i MusicFoundation.

In 1998, Kamehameha Schools present-ed Hohu with its highest honor – the Orderof Ke Ali‘i Pauahi medal.

“Mama grew up in the church, and shewas a true Christian and a true teacher,” saidHohu’s daughter Leila Hohu Kiaha ’44.“She lived a full life.”

Mr. Lorch established a marching band thatperformed at football, basketball and baseball gamesplaying contemporary selections like “Hogan’s Heroes,”“Oye Como Va,” “Hawai’i Five-0” and “SweetCaroline.”

Marching routines at football game halftimesincluded creating a human train while playing“Locomotion” (Come on baby, do the Locomotion...) or a human clock face with cheerleaders representingthe hands of the clock during a rousing version of“Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”

Meanwhile, the “Hawaiian War Chant” and“Aloha ‘Oe March” were standard parade selections.

As there was no orchestra director then, Mr. Lorchtook on the orchestra as well. He also oversaw the windensemble, which was part of the concert band, and thestage band or jazz band. And the Hawaiian ensemblewas an integral part of any band concert with perfor-mances of hula kahiko and ‘auana.

Each entity of the band felt Mr. Lorch’s hand uponthem at one time or another. No matter whatinstrument, or what level of experience, studentsalways knew that Mr. Lorchbelieved in them. He reallybelieved that his ownpersonal commitment toexcellence would bring out the best in everyonearound him.

He arranged musicwith solos that highlighteda bandsman’s talent, andspent countless hoursdiagramming every move-ment of a halftime show, aswell as arranging the entireprogram of music. Overtime, he arranged 150 piecesof music for the differentbands – some of which arestill being played by theKamehameha middle andhigh school bands.

Remembering... the Leader of the BandBand director David Lorch (Jan. 15, 1930 –April 28, 2004) taught much more than musicto members of the Kamehameha Schools band

On the field at Camp Kokokahi, with a bull horn inone hand, and a whistle in the other, his voice wouldboom: “Step, kick, step, kick… point those toes!”

When members of the 1966-1976 KamehamehaSchools band remember the late David Myron Lorch,those words are the first thing they remember.

But let’s go back, before his days atKamehameha… Mr. Lorch was born in Grand Rapids,Mich., and carried a master’s degree in education. Hismusical career began on a cigar box cello, followed bya plastic tonette, which led him to his school band.

His choice of band instrument was a clarinet, andat age 13 he was invited to join a professional 12-piecedance band, where he added the saxophone to hisrepertoire. From then on, music was his passion – a passion that eventually led him to Hawai‘i andKamehameha Schools.

He started his time at Kamehameha making homevisits to try and recruit students into the band. Initially,there were only 14 kids signed up for band – in theelementary, intermediate and high schools combined.

Over the next 10 years, he grew the band from 14members to an outfit that was 160 strong. And underhis tutelage, the band developed in variety and talent.

and later worked at Honoka‘a, Waiakea and St. Josephhigh schools.

In March, a reunion was held to honor this specialman who touched so many Kamehameha Schoolsstudents. For most of the more than 100 attendees, ithad been 25 years or more since they had seen Mr.Lorch.

Gathering at Kapono’s in the Aloha Tower MarketPlace in March, it was like stepping back in time as thefeelings of love, respect, and ‘ohana were rekindled.There was no way of knowing at that time that formost it would be their last time spent with Mr. Lorch.

Kahu Wendell Davis ’71 told the crowd, “Thething I remember most is marching band and UncleDave telling us to point those toes. And we would kindof look at each other and shrug. We were athletes, andit was just not macho to point our toes! But, we did.”

Herbert Almeida ’73 emceed the reunion andquoted lyrics from the Dan Fogelburg song “Leader ofthe Band.” Earle Kealoha ’75 shared that “ I didn’tknow what an impact he had on me until years later. Inever appreciated it at the time.”

Another band member, Albert Ka‘ai ’72, sharedhis memories of lessons learned not only in music, butof what it meant to be a man. Professional musicianand Kapälama Campus music teacher Alan Akaka ’74credited his love of arranging music to Mr. Lorch’sencouragement and unswerving belief in him.

Although unable to attend the reunion, Rev.Wendell “Skip” Wright ’70 e-mailed some of histhoughts: “I have not seen him in years, yet his touchin and on my life is as fresh as the day I first walkedinto the band room as a freshman in September 1966 –asking if I could be a part of the band. I will neverforget the warmth of that smile that greeted me andhow he simply said, ‘Welcome aboard!’ ’’

Steven Kahili ’76 wrote “Head’s up and keepthose toes pointed!” while Michael Crabbe ’75, speak-ing on the phone with Mr. Lorch, reminisced aboutband camps, with skits and toad races, marchingroutines, and the songs…so very many songs.

Although David Myron Lorch has left this earthlylife, his music and legacy go on and that is reflected inthe number of his students who became band directorsthemselves. They include Aaron Mahi ’71, Dawn LopezCone ’73 and Gerald Carrell ’77 to just name a few.

The selection criteria is quite simple and reflects David’s passion to teach

music: he wished that the scholarships be given to graduating seniors

who are members of the band or orchestra planning on continuing on

to college, seeking a degree in the music field.
