PUBLISHED FOR THE KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS `OHANA PHOTO BY BRUCE LUM O n August 2, Kamehameha Schools – the rest of Hawai`i and the nation – learned that a three-judge panel from the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals had ruled, 2 to 1, that Kamehameha’s policy of giving preference in admissions to applicants of Hawaiian ancestry was illegal. Kamehameha’s leaders immediately responded that they would pursue all legal avenues to defend the Schools’ policy. “This fight is far from over,” declared Board of Trustees Chair Diane Plotts. “This case raises unique questions of unsettled law, and we believe the panel’s ruling is wrong. Two judges ruled against our policy, but the Chief Judge of the panel dissented. There are currently 24 active judges on the 9th Circuit Court, and there is a very good chance a different panel will agree with Judge Susan Graber and support our right to offer preference to Native Hawaiians. For that reason, we will immediately request a hearing before a larger panel of the 9th Circuit Court.” To this end, Kamehameha filed a petition for rehearing en banc with the Court on August 23. While the 9th Circuit Appeal process is underway, the panel ruling is automatically “stayed,” which means that Kamehameha Schools’ preference policy remains in place. “Our current admissions and our current students will not be immediately affected by the court’s ruling. If our petition for rehear- ing before the Ninth Circuit is unsuccessful, we will appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, and ask the court to order an extended stay of the ruling until the appeal process is completed,” said CEO Dee Jay Mailer. In its ruling, the panel acknowledged that Kamehameha Schools’ policy serves a remedial purpose, but Judges Jay Bybee and Robert Beezer opined that the policy is not justified because it effectively excludes all non- Hawaiians. In her dissent, Judge Graber wrote that the many statutes enacted by Congress to provide exclusive remedial preferences for Native Hawaiians demonstrate that “Congress clearly meant to allow the private education of Native Hawaiian children at the Kamehameha Schools.” “Losing our policy would be a serious setback for us, because it would take away the most direct route we have to provide educational resources to restore and rebuild the Hawaiian people. It is our kuleana as trustees to protect our policy and we are absolutely committed to that,” said Plotts. “It is also our kuleana to fulfill our educational mission,” added Mailer. “As we fight in the courts, we will continue to educate Hawaiian students through our campus programs. We will continue to extend our reach to our Hawaiian communities, as mandated by our Strategic Plan. We will examine and evaluate how every educational initiative fits with our mission, to make sure that we are serving as many Hawaiian children as we possibly can. And we will continue to work toward the goals established in our Strategic Plan, to foster understanding and widespread practice of all things Hawaiian in order to further strengthen the Hawaiian culture.” Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals strikes down 117-year-old policy Petition for Rehearing – Current Status A petition for rehearing asks for an “en banc” review before a panel of 11-15 judges. Those who may have seen a large white truck with very explicit, larger-than-life anti-abortion graphics around Honolulu, and noticed the

Kamehameha Schools “I Mua” logo decals centered on the panels of both the driver’s and passenger’s doors, should be aware that KamehamehaSchools is NOT affiliated with this motorized advertising campaign.

The trucks are the brainchild and property of the Center for Bio-EthicalReform (CBR), a privately funded, nonprofit educational corporation head-quartered in Lake Forest, Calif. The trucks are part of CBR’s “ReproductiveChoice Campaign” to “awaken the nation to the horrible injustice ofabortion.”

Kamehameha Schools has contacted CBR’s headquarters to expressconcern that the placement of Kamehameha Schools’ logo decals on theirtruck’s doors has generated confusion in the community about our affiliationwith the campaign.

The Ninth Circuit Court’s adverse ruling on

Tuesday, August 2, reminded all of us of how

precious the gift from our princess is for our

people. As we continue our fight to appeal

this decision, our spirit and determination

have grown stronger each day, along with our

unwavering commitment to provide

educational opportunities for Hawaiian children in perpetuity.

The entire leadership at Kamehameha Schools has been

heartened by the groundswell of support from Hawaiians and

non-Hawaiians alike. Whenever we have stood for our right to

serve our people, we have stood with the entire State of Hawai`i,

with our `ohana on the continent and around the world.

Together, we have prayed, marched, held signs and written

letters, sharing our story with tens of thousands.

Truly, such a mammoth display of support could only

In July, Kamehameha Schoolsmarked the start of its $84 mil-lion Royal Hawaiian Shopping

Center renovation project – thefirst significant upgrade to thecenter in its 26-year history.

The single largest real estateinvestment in Kamehameha’sportfolio, the shopping centerconsists of 290,000 square feetlocated along a three-block stretchon Waikïkïÿs Kaläkaua Avenue.

“Our goal is to preserve thisimportant land legacy and create aplace where we can bring our`ohana to share the rich history ofWaikïkï, said Susan Todani, direc-tor of investments forKamehameha Schools. “We alsoplan to use the center as a venuefor Kamehameha to share itseducational and cultural programswith the community.”

The center sits on the groundsof Helumoa, a former residence ofKamehameha the Great and later aplace of retreat for Hawaiian ali`i,including Bernice Pauahi Bishop.Helumoa was once the center ofgovernment for O`ahu, and waslush with a grove of 10,000 niu(coconut) trees planted by ChiefKakuhihewa in the 16th century.

Kamehameha will be assistedby Los Angeles shopping centerdeveloper The Festival Companiesin the renovation project, with thehistoric Royal Grove recreated asthe heart of the redevelopment.

The goal is to incorporate

ho`okipa, or Hawaiian hospitality,in the main architectural andoperational themes, and bring ablend of new lifestyle stores andrestaurants that will appeal to bothvisitors and residents alike.

Renovations will create aninviting, pedestrian-friendly envi-ronment, with new entry portals,more windows and open-air länaiallowing better access to shopsand more open and invitingspaces. Also included are newescalators, elevators, sidewalksand landscaping.

An original multi-dimension-al show will light up the fourthfloor Aloha Showroom once moreunder the guidance of one ofHawai`i’s most experienced pro-ducers, Roy Tokujo in conjunctionof Realisations (USA) 2000 fromMontreal. The show will focus onthe history of Waikïkï done in thestyle of Mauiÿs award winning`Ualena.

“It’s critical that we findopportunities to enhance our com-mercial assets so that our endow-ment can continue to support oureducational programs and campus-es,” said Kamehameha’s vicepresident for endowment KirkBelsby. “The revitalization of theRoyal Hawaiian Shopping Centeris a great example of how we cantake an existing asset and improveits earning potential while stayingtrue to our Hawaiian values andto our mission.”

Kamehameha students on World Champion ballclubThree Kapälama Campus student-athletes played key roles in lead-ing the O`ahu All-Stars to the 2005Cal Ripken World Series baseballtitle in August. Hawai`i defeatedtwo-time defending world cham-pion Mexico in the title game 1-0.

Team members included JoeYokoi ’12, Kash Kalohelani ’10 andKewby “Ikaika” Meyer ’11.

Meyer struck out the side inthe final inning to earn the savefor Hawai`i in the world titlegame. He was selected to theUnited States All-World Seriesteam as a first baseman and alsonamed the United States’ mostoutstanding player.

Kalohelani was selected toUnited States All-Defensive team.He was Hawai`i’s starting catcher.

Kash Kalohelani, Ikaika Meyer and Joe Yokoidisplay their world championship team trophy.

The Cal Ripken World Seriesis comprised of 15 teams of 11-and 12-year-olds from across theworld.

Another Hawai`i team from`Ewa Beach, in the same agedivision as the Ripken champions,took the world title in LittleLeague baseball.

Kamehameha’s Extension Education Division’s Community Learning

Center at Nanakuli has relocated from the Pacific Shopping Mall at

Nanakuli to the former site of Nanaikapono Elementary School along

Farrington Highway.

Blessing ceremonies were held in August at the new location, which

will also house EED’s Literacy Enhancement department. The site, featuring

a gym, individual classrooms, and a larger learning center, offers much

more potential for educational programs and services targeted at the

Leeward community, said EED dean Dr. Juvenna Chang ’60.

Through collaborations with other service providers and educators in

the community, the center offers educational opportunities in technology,

leadership, literacy, career development and training and Hawaiian cultural

activities.

Applications for Kamehameha programs and services may also be

obtained at the center. For more information, contact the Community

In September,KamehamehaCEO Dee JayMailerannounced theappointment ofChris J. Pating asthe new vicepresident of strategic planning andimplementation. Pating willoversee the Office of StrategicPlanning and the Policy Analysis& System Evaluation department.

Pating is tasked with manag-ing the implementation of theKamehameha Schools EducationStrategic Plan and also directingKamehameha’s long-range strate-gic planning efforts.

“Chris has a wealth of expe-rience in strategic planning, havingassisted several education organi-zations in developing and imple-menting strategic initiatives,processes and systems,” Mailersaid.

Pating is no stranger to

Kamehameha Schools, havingworked with the organization onseveral projects over the past years,most recently with EducationGroup executives in developingthe Education Strategic Plan.

“Throughout all of his work,Chris is known for his soundknowledge of educational systems,clear thinking and planning,excellent facilitations skills, and theability to accomplish significantamounts of work by working wellwith others,” Mailer added.

Prior to joining Kamehameha,Pating headed Arthur Andersen’sNational K12 Education ConsultingPractice and their Global EducationIndustry Team. Upon the acquisi-tion of Arthur Andersen byBearingPoint, Pating served assenior executive and educationlead for the Western Region beforeleaving to start Pating Company, aconsulting firm that specialized inserving large public and privateeducation enterprises.

2006; Ing was reappointed in 2002for a term expiring June 30, 2007;Lau was reappointed in 2003 for aterm expiring June 30, 2008;Kihune was reappointed in 2004for a term expiring June 30, 2009.

Plotts, Ing and Lau each havethe right to seek one additionalfive-year term after their currentterms expire. Kihune’s term willend in 2009 and Thompson’s in2010.

Thompson is a regent emeri-tus of the University of Hawai`iBoard of Regents and is on theAdvisory Council of the OceanPolicy Institute. He is a 1972 grad-uate of Punahou School and carriesa bachelor’s in ocean science fromthe University of Hawai`i.

Nainoa is the son of Myron“Pinky” Thompson, who servedas a Kamehameha Schools trusteefrom 1974-1994.

In July, Hawai`i’sProbate Courtapproved thereappointment of trustee NainoaThompson toanother term asa KamehamehaSchools trustee.

Thompson, the well-knownmaster navigator with thePolynesian Voyaging Society, wasoriginally appointed to a five-year term on Jan. 1, 2001. Hisnew term will run from Jan. 1,2006 to June 30, 2010.

“Kamehameha Schools ischanging, and with change thereare vast opportunities,”Thompson said. “I am honored toserve and be a part of that changewhich will shape the lives ofHawaiians today and Hawaiiansyet unborn. We must measureour decisions of today against thequality of the lives of ourchildren’s keiki.”

In 2000, Hawai`i’s ProbateCourt instituted a new procedurefor appointing KamehamehaSchools trustees after four of thefive Hawai`i Supreme Courtjustices declined to continue toappoint the trustees.

To avoid having the termsof all trustees expire at the sametime, initial terms were staggeredas follows: trustee Diane Plotts,one year; trustee J. Douglas Ing,two years; trustee Constance Lau,three years; trustee RobertKihune, four years; andThompson, five years.

Nae`ole-Wong has a bache-lor’s in Hawaiian studies from theUniversity of Hawai`i as well as a pair of UH-Mänoa master’sdegrees: one in curriculum andinstruction and the other in educa-tional administration.

John Colson has been namedthe new Hawai`i Campus middleschool (grades 6-8) principal.

Colson brings to Kamehameha25 years of experience at Hawai`iPreparatory Academy, a highlyregarded K-12 boarding and dayschool in Kamuela, Hawai`i. Colsonwas the HPA headmaster for 12years, and over the course of histerm also served the school as princi-pal, dean of students, athleticdirector, dorm parent, counselor,coach and teacher.

The Financial Aid andScholarship Services department iscommitted to providing financialassistance to students who demon-strate financial need. During the2004 fiscal year, KamehamehaSchools awarded more than $20million in financial aid andscholarships to 7,746 recipients.

Meet Scottina RuisScottina Ruis is an MBA student at the University ofHawai`i at Manoa. She is a 2005 recipient of theMatsuo Takabuki & Goldman Sachs Scholarship andalso a recipient of the Native Hawaiian Chamber ofCommerce Scholarship.

Scottina, a single mother of two, said she feels thatan MBA will best prepare her for the future and complement hersocial work background to best benefit the Hawaiian community.

“I’d like to learn more about the business world so that I canincorporate this learning into programs that help our people moveforward,” she said.

W ith nearly $160,000 in college and other scholarshipsawarded to more than 100 recipients for school year 2005-

06, Ke Aliÿi Pauahi Foundation, a nonprofit support organizationto Kamehameha Schools, has increased its educational reach intothe Hawaiian community.

“The pool of qualified applicants this year was impressive,”said Steve Reelitz ’73, KAPF’s donor relations manager. “We had a54 percent increase in applications this year. We made it a priority toget the word out about the scholarships we offer – and it paid offwith 592 applications received, compared to 384 from last year.

“This is our golden opportunity to extend our reach beyondKamehameha Schools and offer support for educationalopportunities deep into our island communities.”

Hawaiians have progressed in thelast decade.

“Ka Huaka`i’s predecessorsresulted in millions of dollarscoming into the state to supportprograms that serve NativeHawaiians,” said Lilinoe Andrews,manager of Pauahi Publications,publisher of Ka Huaka`i. “ManyHawaiian families have benefited,with the groundwork for suchprograms laid by the 1983 and1993 assessments.”

Ka Huaka`i is a 450-pagereport that pulls together datafrom more than two dozen sources,including state Department ofHealth and Department ofEducation statistics, and federalsources like the U.S. CensusBureau. The report characterizesNative Hawaiian well-being infive distinct but overlapping areas:social and cultural; material andeconomic; physical; emotional;and educational.

“Lately, there has been a lotof discussion about NativeHawaiian well-being and some

Thompson, who would goon to work as a KamehamehaSchools trustee for 20 years (1974-1994), believed that NativeHawaiians suffered challengessimilar to those of other indige-nous peoples in the United States,and proposed that the Hawaiianpeople suffered from a collectivedepression as a result of the lossof culture, self-sufficiency andself-concept.

Thompson knew that usingdata to document this loss was an important step in advancingNative Hawaiian well-being.

“We owe much to MyronThompson’s foresight,” said Dr.Shawn Kana`iaupuni ’83, directorof the Policy Analysis & SystemEvaluation (PASE) department.“He realized that we neededresearch and data to tell our storyto policymakers and educators.”

Through Thompson’s commitment to garner national-level support, the first NativeHawaiian Education AssessmentProject was authorized by Congressand funded and produced byKamehameha Schools.

That first assessment in 1983eventually led to federal NativeHawaiian legislation like theNative Hawaiian Health Care Actand the Native HawaiianEducation Act.

Kamehameha Schools pub-lished an update to that originalreport in 1993. Ka Huaka`i (thejourney) now follows as the thirdchapter which details how Native

people even argue that mostNative Hawaiians share a similarsocioeconomic status as do othergroups in our state and nation,”Kana`iaupuni said. “It’s simplynot true, and the purpose of KaHuaka`i is to bring the issues intofocus and show the need forbuilding a stronger base of NativeHawaiian learners.”

A new aspect of the presentreport is that it takes a strengths-based approach that recognizesthe assets – as well as thechallenges – of Native Hawaiiancommunities to provide a morebalanced understanding of well-being.

“From a Native Hawaiianresearch perspective, our hope isto energize positive change know-ing that we as a people have manyassets to build on, which is whythis book does more than just iden-tify problems,” Kana`iaupuni said.

Overall, the report showsthat educational outcomes forNative Hawaiian learners havenot improved much in the last 10 years. Ka Huaka`i gives someclues for changing that by exam-ining the building blocks thatexist within communities and bydiscussing promising directions inNative Hawaiian education.

Kana`iaupuni said she andthe PASE team are proud to be apart of the continuing journeybegun by Myron Thompson.

As a Kamehamehagraduate serving in Iraqwith the United States

Army, I am greatly saddened anddisturbed by the recent federalappeals court ruling pertaining tothe admissions policy of theKamehameha Schools.

Our beloved Princess BernicePauahi Bishop desired that herpeople become good and industri-ous citizens. Many of us choose todo so in the service of our nation,and through our efforts we haveserved all the people of Hawai`iand the United States.

Because of her gift, I havetaught and mentored hundreds ofHawaiians and non-Hawaiians inthe United States Army. All ofthem knew I was Hawaiian, knewthat I was a Kamehameha gradu-ate and benefited from the visionof Pauahi.

The reason I ended my Armyretirement and deployed to Iraqwas to be with those soldiers.

We do not get much newshere. We are constantly on guardagainst the terrorists who wouldseek to end our lives, as we freethe people of Iraq. It is a 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week strugglein a hostile environment andunder extreme weather conditions.

We have lost many men andwomen here, many of them friendsand family and some of them,graduates of the KamehamehaSchools.

It is an appalling feeling thatnumbs you when you lose a friendin combat. We have all experiencedit here, but nothing prepared usfor the shocking news from the9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appealsruling.

The report traveled quicklythough our informal network ofmore than 50 graduates inSouthwest Asia. I remembergetting the e-mails and visits. Allof us felt betrayed and saddened.We questioned why, as we fightfor the freedom of so many, ourown people are denied the benefitsof an education from a privatepersonal gift of our last ali`i.

This was inconceivable to allof us. Many of us became extreme-ly angry and lost our focus on our

combat mission here, which putus in extreme danger.

We felt the same emotionswe did when Sgt. Frank Tia`i waskilled outside the gate here inBalad last month. Anger, sadness,revenge and rage pummeled oursenses.

With the spirit and disciplineof a Kamehameha education and

our beloved Princess Pauahi, weregained control. We talked, andprayed for our people.

Gradually we overcame thenegative emotions and vowed tostrive to do what is pono, to contin-ue to be good and industriouscitizens and to return to Hawai`ialive and ready to once againdemonstrate that the gift of aKamehameha education benefitsall the people of the world.

The legacy of theKamehameha Schools is being feltin Iraq, Afghanistan and every-where else Kamehameha graduateslive and travel. It also continueskeeping a native people’s hope forthe future alive.

My prayers and thoughts arewith all of you back in Hawai`i, asI and other graduates continue toserve our nation. I pray that thecourt system of the United Stateswill see the error of its judgmentand understand that our desire isto allow the Kamehameha Schoolsto continue to produce good andindustrious Hawaiian citizens,which benefits everyone.

A Letter from IraqHawaiian soldier fights for the United States and Kamehameha Schools

W e, the Kamehameha alumni and soldiers currentlyserving in Iraq, are greatly saddened and disturbedby the recent Federal Appeals Court ruling pertain-

ing to the admissions policy of the Kamehameha Schools. As volunteer citizen soldiers, we joined the military with

the desire to protect and serve our state and country – a valueinstilled by the Kamehameha Schools and galvanized throughits former JROTC program. Now, at a time when the needs ofKamehameha Schools are at its greatest, we are here in Iraqcorrecting injustices and unable to help with our own injusticesat home.

We are distraught that we cannot be there to participate in the cultural and social battles to come or to help heal theemotional wounds that this crisis is inflicting on the very soulof Hawaiians. However, it lifts our spirits to know thatHawaiian people from different backgrounds and political viewsare rallying for this cause. As your thoughts and prayers are herewith us in Iraq, so are ours with you at home.

We would like to thank all the people of Hawai`i, bothHawaiian and non-Hawaiian, who support the Kamehamehaschools. Thank you for understanding what Kamehamehameans to us. More than just a school, it is a legacy that contin-ues to produce Hawaiian leaders for all the people of Hawai`i.

Mahalo a nui loa to Governor Linda Lingle for her immedi-ate public support of an issue that is so important to Hawaiians.On that sunny day in Aloha Stadium where she bid us farewellso many months ago, Linda Lingle promised to us that shewould take care of our families while we were gone. Thousands of Hawaiians and non-Hawaiians gatherednationwide to protest the Doe v. Kamehameha Schools ruling

A fter the Ninth CircuitCourt’s ruling in August,Kamehameha Schools

`ohana, its alumni associationregions, and many other support-ive Hawaiian organzations,gathered in locations worldwideto protest the court’s majorityopinion that Kamehameha’spreference policy was illegal.

Red-clad people came out in droves with signs and flags.They prayed, chanted, lit candlesand peacefully demonstrated theirdetermination to overturn theninth court’s ruling.

Gatherings were held onKaua`i, O`ahu, Maui, Moloka`i,Lana`i and Hawai`i islands, and inNorthern and SouthernCalifornia, Pacific Northwest,South Central, Midwest and EastCoast regions as well as in Iraq.

It’s objective is clear: to increasethe capability and well-being ofNative Hawaiian people by

creating long-term intergener-ational change via education.

That’s the mantra behind the recently completed EducationStrategic Plan, an outgrowth of theKamehameha Schools StrategicPlan 2000-2015. Initial discussionssurrounding the education planbegan among Kamehamehaleadership in July 2004, withtrustees approving the plan in thesummer of 2005.

The Education Strategic Plandirects more of Pauahi’s legacy tochildren in predominantlyHawaiian communities, with anemphasis on programs for younglearners from 0 to 8 years old.

The goal of the educationplan is to increase the number ofchildren served by Kamehamehaby nearly 150 percent – from theroughly 22,400 the institutioncurrently assists to 55,400 by 2015.

Charlene Hoe, Kamehameha’sinterim head of CommunityOutreach Education, described theEducation Strategic Plan asarticulating an integrated strategicfocus to enhance and sustainpositive educational outcomes forgreater numbers of NativeHawaiian children. In essence, it’sthe educational road mapKamehameha will follow for thenext 10 years.

“Our original strategic planset a vision that we wanted to seein 2015,” Hoe said. “That plan

collectively agreeing to target thatprenatal to 8-year-old learner.”

Studies have shown that 80percent of a child’s brain develop-ment takes place in the first 8 yearsof life, making early childhoodeducation critical to long-termeducational success.

“Zero to 8 is the period that’sdefined as early childhood devel-opment, and that’s the time when achild’s brain is building founda-tional capacity to optimize itslearning fluidity,” Hoe said.

“The child is setting thefoundation for its entire life. So themore we can do early, the better thechild will be prepared for lifelonglearning. And in concentrating inthis area, we’re not looking at thechild in isolation – we’re going tobe working with the entire family.”

Hoe said while the education

provided a very clear directive forKamehameha Schools: that weneeded to do much more than justour campus-based activities.”

Three key priorities define theEducation Strategic Plan’s overallapproach.

• Prenatal to 8 Years of Age FocusA majority of KamehamehaSchools’ programs and serviceswill target the 0-8 age group,including caregiver training andsupport; support for preschoolage children; and supportingkindergarten through grade 3students in public schools.

• Sustaining EducationalMomentum in Later YearsAlthough Kamehameha’semphasis will be on ages 0-8,additional programs and serviceswill support the child duringcritical transition periods,building on achievements madeduring the 0-8 age range. Thisincludes supporting grade 4through 16 students in publicschools and also in the post-highfinancial aid arena.

• Innovate and Optimize forEfficiency and EffectivenessKamehameha will align andintegrate its resources and priori-tize its activities to meet theobjectives of its education plan,continuing its tradition ofoutstanding campus basedprograms while incorporatinginnovative instructional andcurricular models. Kamehamehawill also focus on communitypartnerships and exploring waysof providing more community-based educational opportunities.

“The fact that the plan isconnecting all of our educationalstrategies is a very importantelement,” Hoe said. “Not only arewe connecting them, but we’redoing it in such a way that we are

1950sAnthony Ramos ’58 was honoredby classmates at the Hale KoaHotel on May 29. Class represen-tative Aileen Parilla Magno ’58coordinated the event. “Tony”retired as the Kapälama Campushigh school principal in July aftera 43-year career withKamehameha Schools, including28 years as principal.

1960s Henry Lau ’64 retired from theHonolulu Police Department inNovember 2004 after 39 years ofdedicated service. Henry joinedHPD on in January 1966 andretired as an assistant chief. Heheaded the Investigative Bureau,managing five commands: theCriminal Investigative Division,Narcotics/Vice Division, JuvenileServices Division, SpecializedServices Division and ScientificInvestigative Section.

Dr. Edward Kame`enui ’66was named the nation’s first com-missioner for special educationresearch in May. Kame`enui, aninternational authority on learningproblems and special education,will lead the National Center forSpecial Education Research, anewly established office with theInstitute of Education Science. IES is the research, evaluation andstatistical arm of the U.S.Department of Education.Kame`enui spent the last 17 yearsas a faculty member at theUniversity of Oregon, from whichhe holds both a master’s anddoctorate in special education.

Sherry Cordeiro Evans ’68went from the warm, balmybreezes of Hawai`i to the cold,freezing climate of Alaska where

she works with other Hawaiiansand native people there perpetu-ating the Hawaiian culture. She isthe director of Hawaiian studiesfor Nä Keiki o Hawai`i Civic Club,sits on the mayor of Anchorage’sMinority Hire Task Force, chairs a minority education concernscommittee, and is a disc jockey for public radio KNBA’s “IslandStyle” program. She works part-time for an air charter servicewhich allows her frequent trips toHawai`i.

Charles Holt ’68 is a five-starchef at Katmai Wilderness Lodgein Alaska. His homegrown, islandstyle of cooking and sense ofhumor sets the tone for the lodge’swelcoming atmosphere.

1970sCyndy Hennessey-Aylett ’74 is aproject manager for HonoluluMayor Mufi Hannemann. Cyndyis responsible for implementationof recommendations made by themayor’s review team.

1980sBeau Springer ’80 was recentlyelected onto the Hawai`iAssociation of Realtors Board ofDirectors and is now vice presidentfor the Kona Board of Realtors.

Pamai Tomczyk Cano ’84 isthe assistant director of humanresources for the Grand HyattKaua`i Hotel in Po`ipü. Previously,Pamai served as employmentmanager, corporate training man-ager and employee relationsadministrator.

lst Lt. Victor Talamao ’86became the 154th Communicationflight commander for the Hawai`iAir National Guard in ceremoniesheld at Hickam Air Force Base inMay. Capt. Clifton Heen ’86 is the154th Maintenance Operationsflight commander.

1990sKristina Lowe ’91 works as asenior product marketing manag-er for Experion in Irvine, Calif.She has a BA in public relations/communications from BYU-Provo.

Lisa Farias ’92 earned a master of science degree incounseling psychology fromChaminade University in May.Lisa earned her bachelorÿs degreefrom the University of Hawai`i atHilo in 1997.

Kurstan Olaso ’94 wasrecently named to the all-tournament team at the 2005 U.S.Volleyball Championships inColorado. He and wife Jolynn livein Chandler, Ariz., where theycoach several girls and boysteams, one of which won its statetournament competition twoyears in a row.

Julia Lowe ’94 is a teacher at Hau`ula Elementary on O`ahu.She has a BA in Hawaiian studiesfrom BYU-Hawai`i and lives inLäi`e with her daughter Niva, age 8.

Kalei Scoggins ’02 is asenior at Loyola MarymountUniversity in Los Angeles, Calif.Kalei is on track to become thefirst female graduate from theuniversity’s Athletic TrainingEducation Program, whichprepares students for a career inathletic training. LMU entered theworld of sports medicine whenthe program began in the fall of2003. Kalei is featured in theschool’s Spring 2005 issue ofVistas magazine, in an articletitled “Healing Top Competitors.”

No`u Revilla ’04 is a studentat New York University inManhattan. She recently spenttwo summer months as an internwith jDesign, LLC, producers of“Imua TV.” No`u wrote andproduced stories, and assistedjDesign owner Jeff DePonte ’73on non-Kamehameha productionjobs as well. She credited Jeff,

editor Paul Goto and writer ElisaYadao as being her mentors. “Iblossomed as a producer, trainedon the best software and cultivatedmy writing,” No`u wrote. “Myinternship took me beyond themechanics of a television showand introduced me to the possi-bility that I can make a differencewith my words and vision.”
