Councilmembers need to be paid

When City of Dallas voters go to the polls, they can make a difference in a number of ways. There’s one way that activists Dr. Juanita Wallace, Erik Wilson and Pastor Richie Butler feel is important for the continued growth and development of the city.

The three gathered recently to talk with the media about a proposition that would give additional compensation to City Council members, actually doubling their current salaries.

Proposition No. 8 reads:

Increasing Compensation for the Mayor and Councilmembers. Shall Chapter III, Section 4(a) of the Dallas City Charter be amended to increase compensation for councilmembers to $60,000, effective upon the swearing in of city council members in June 2015, and for the mayor to $80,000, effective upon the swearing in as mayor of an individual who did not hold the office of mayor on November 4, 2014?

A YES vote, says Dr. Wallace, is important because serving is a “full-time job” and deserves adequate compensation. “We can’t continue to expect people to serve when based on the time they are putting in, they’re barely making minimum wage.”

“It is a full-time job,” said Mr. Wilson, who is seeking a seat on the Dallas CIty Council in the upcoming Spring election. When people who want to serve have to take a second job in order to take care of their families, the time they have to serve is diminished, he continued.

Meanwhile, Pastor Butler talked about how the city can grow, groom leaders for service and build bridges instead of barriers. “We have to start grooming future leaders, preparing them to serve,” said the pastor. “We have to build a pipeline of leaders. We have to identify and prepare young men and women.”

Those elected leaders should be paid, he agreed with Mr. Wilson and Dr. Wallace, saying “It’s the right thing to do.”

Unfortunately there are obstacles to overcome. The ballot is long, the language on some of the propositions is ambiguous, and voter turnout is always lower in the midterm elections.

Folks just don’t seem to realize how important the midterm elections are. Sure the votes are needed in the presidential election, and the elections are more exciting but every election is important.

Your vote in the midterm election can cancel out your vote in the presidential election. Sure you may have felt as though you did something profound by casting your vote for America’s first Black President. You wanted to do something historic, only to go home and never go near a polling booth again. That’s not the way. It can’t be.

In a recent interview, President Barack Obama stressed the significance of voters going to the polls so that he “and Michelle can continue doing the work” that is needed. He’s right. At this point in his presidency, people begin referring to the president as “lame duck.” An overwhelming show of support at the polls could make for a very exciting “lame duck period.”

Just like these activists are stressing the importance of voting for elected officials to be compensated, there are critics who are not in favor of pay for “community servants.”

Some look at the positions as volunteer and not worthy of compensation. Sadly you also have folks who don’t want to see anyone “get ahead” financially. It was also pointed out that some think if elected officials are compensated, they won’t steal or do something dishonest. Well, history has shown us that even folks with money steal and just because you have money does not mean you won’t do unethical things.

To expect people to work without compensation is an unrealistic and inhumane way of thinking; like slavery!

Many people don’t know that elected officials are constantly deluged by calls, letters, and texts asking for assistance. Folks don’t even know the job descriptions, they just know the person is an elected official. Translation: When I need something you are supposed to help me.

The sad commentary is that so few contribute to campaign funds and so few vote, but let them need help, they have no problem asking!

If you have doubts about supporting Proposition 8, ask a City Council member if you can shadow them for a week. Keep a log. Do the math. If they are not earning a wage for their service, elected officials have to go out and make a living some way, or you’ll end up with a lot of wealthy people who may not have the level of sensitivity that their constituents deserve. It’s your call. Dr. Wallace, Mr. Wilson and Rev. Butler understand this issue. They want intelligent, compassionate, well-prepared people to help make this world a better place and they want them to be adequately compensated. Don’t you?

A Place Beyond Despair:From the journal of a survivor

A strength without measure, to giving up you say never!

A spirit and drive, to challenge this robber of lives;

An unyielding will to do more than simply survive,

This fight that touches so many lives.

Here’s to the families and friends who share love without end.

To the care givers and all the inspirers of hope, to those who run and walk in a race to cure, one of lifes bitter slopes.

For the tears and fears, for the loved ones we’ve lost, inside our years,

Those cherished moments we hold so dear, with precious memories, so lasting and clear.

For those days when you had to endure yet another procedure or test, for the nights you tossed and turned as sleep found

little rest.

Here’s to you, for your belief and your courage to say, although this journey is an uphill fight,

You have the faith, determination, the will, and the might; to

forge ahead,

Never giving up, on the celebration of life.

For the sunsets to come, for

the laughter your heart has yet to

see, for the joy in the midst of euphoria,

when we all bask in the deliverance of being,

cancer free.

CDC Fact Sheet:

Tightened Guidance for U.S. Healthcare

Workers on Personal Protective

Equipment for Ebola The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is tightening previous infection control guidance for healthcare workers caring for patients with Ebola, to ensure there is no ambiguity. The guidance focuses on specific personal protective equipment (PPE) health care workers should use and offers detailed step by step instructions for how to put the equipment on and take it off safely. Recent experience from safely treating patients with Ebola at Emory University Hospital, Nebraska Medical Center and National Institutes of Health Clinical Center are reflected in the guidance. The enhanced guidance is centered on three principles:All healthcare workers undergo rigorous training and are practiced and competent with PPE, including taking it on and off in a systemic mannerNo skin exposure when PPE is wornAll workers are supervised by a trained monitor who watches each worker taking PPE on and off. All patients treated at Emory University Hospital, Nebraska Medical Center and the NIH Clinical Center have followed the three principles. None of the workers at these facilities have contracted the illness. Principle #1: Rigorous and repeated training Focusing only on PPE gives a false sense of security of safe care and worker safety. Training is a critical aspect of ensuring infection control. Facilities need to ensure all healthcare providers practice numerous times to make sure they understand how to appropriately use the equipment, especially in the step by step donning and doffing of PPE. CDC and partners will ramp up training offerings for healthcare personnel across the country to reiterate all the aspects of safe care recommendations. Principle #2: No skin exposure when PPE is worn Given the intensive and invasive care that US hospitals provide for Ebola patients, the tightened guidelines are more directive in recommending no skin exposure when PPE is worn. CDC is recommending all of the same PPE included in the August 1, 2014 guidance, with the addition of coveralls and single-use, disposable hoods. Goggles are no longer recommended as they may not provide complete skin coverage in comparison to a single use disposable full face shield. Additionally, goggles are not disposable, may fog after extended use, and

healthcare workers may be tempted to manipulate them with contaminated gloved hands. PPE recommended for U.S. healthcare workers caring for patients with Ebola includes:Double glovesBoot covers that are waterproof and go to at least mid-calf or leg coversSingle use fluid resistant or imperable gown that extends to at least mid-calf or coverall without intergraded hood.Respirators, including either N95 respirators or powered air purifying respirator (PAPR)Single-use, full-face shield that is disposableSurgical hoods to ensure complete coverage of the head and neckApron that is waterproof and covers the torso to the level of the mid-calf should be used if Ebola patients have vomiting or diarrhea The guidance describes different options for combining PPE to allow a facility to select PPE for their protocols based on availability, healthcare personnel familiarity, comfort and preference while continuing to provide a standardized, high level of protection for healthcare personnel.

The guidance includes having:

Two specific, recommended PPE options for facilities to choose from. Both options provide equivalent protection if worn, donned and doffed correctly.Designated areas for putting on and taking off PPE. Facilities should ensure that space and lay-out allows for clear separation between clean and potentially contaminated areasTrained observer to monitor PPE use and safe removalStep-by-step PPE removal instructions that include:Disinfecting visibly contaminated PPE using an EPA-registered disinfectant wipe prior to taking off equipmentDisinfection of gloved hands using either an EPA-registered disinfectant wipe or alcohol-based hand rub between steps of taking off PPE. Principle #3: Trained monitor CDC is recommending a trained monitor actively observe and supervise each worker taking PPE on and off. This is to ensure each worker follows the step by step processes, especially to disinfect visibly contaminated PPE. The trained monitor can spot any missteps in real-time and immediately address. PPE is Only One Aspect of Infection Control It is critical to focus on other prevention activities to halt the spread of Ebola in healthcare settings, including:· Prompt screening and triage of potential patients· Designated site managers to ensure proper implementation of precautions· Limiting personnel in the isolation room· Effective environmental cleaning Think Ebola and Care Carefully The CDC reminds health care workers to “Think Ebola” and to “Care Carefully.” Health care workers

should take a detailed travel and exposure history with patients who exhibit fever, severe headache, muscle pain, weakness, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain, unexplained hemorrhage.

If the patient is under investigation for Ebola, health care workers should activate the hospital preparedness plan for Ebola, isolate the patient in a separate room with a private bathroom, and to ensure standardized protocols are in place for PPE use and disposal. Health care workers should not have physical contact with the patient without putting on appropriate PPE. CDC’s Guidance for U.S. Healthcare Settings is Similar to MSF’s (Doctors Without Borders) GuidanceBoth CDC’s and MSF’s guidance focuses on:

• Protecting skin and mucous membranes from all exposures to blood and body fluids during patient care

• Meticulous, systematic strategy for putting on and taking off PPE to avoid contamination and to ensure correct usage of PPE

• Use of oversight and observers to ensure processes are followed

• Disinfection of PPE prior to taking off: CDC recommends disinfecting visibly contaminated PPE using an EPA-registered disinfectant wipe prior to taking off equipment. Additionally, CDC recommends disinfection of gloved hands using either an EPA-registered disinfectant wipe or alcohol-based hand rub between steps of taking off PPE. Due to differences in the U.S. healthcare system and West African healthcare settings, MSF’s guidance recommends spraying as a method for PPE disinfection rather than disinfectant wipes.

Five Pillars of Safety CDC reminds all employers and healthcare workers that PPE is only one aspect of infection control and providing safe care to patients with Ebola.

Other aspects include five pillars of safety:

• Facility leadership has responsibility to provide resources and support for implementation of effective prevention precautions. Management should maintain a culture of worker safety in which appropriate PPE is available and correctly maintained, and workers are provided with appropriate training.

• Designated on-site Ebola site manager responsible for oversight of implementing precautions for healthcare personnel and patient safety in the healthcare facility.

• Clear, standardized procedures where facilities choose one of two options and have a back-up plan in case supplies are not available.

• Trained healthcare personnel: facilities need to ensure all healthcare providers practice numerous times to make sure they understand how to appropriately use the equipment.

• Oversight of practices are critical to ensuring that implementation protocols are done accurately, and any error in putting on or taking off PPE is identified in real-time, corrected and addressed, in case potential exposure occurred.

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Unlike any other time in American history, it is important for all eligible citizens to exercise their right to vote on November 4th. Recently, there has been significant dialogue regarding which party will control the House and the Senate in Washington. These conversations highlight a very real point…this election is critical to the future of minorities, and middle-class Americans. Voter engagement is crucial.

In minority communities, there is a common misconception that voter turnout is only important during presidential elections. Consequently, adhering to this school of thought could result in more than a decade of financial and political oppression. It is not enough to see massive voter turnout in 2016, the same level of voter turnout must occur on November 4th.

Since the election of President Barack Obama, America’s first African-American president, the Republican Party has become the “Obstructionist” Party. During the current Congress, the GOP has done everything in its power to ensure the ineffective operation of our federal government. For example, in

2013 the Republican Party caused a government shutdown.

Now, with the help of the U.S. Supreme Court, the Obstructionist Party has shifted its efforts to implementing new voter ID laws and unconstitutional “poll taxes” that block the votes of approximately 600,000 eligible voters in Texas. The new Texas voter ID law lists state drivers licenses, voter identification certificates, state ID cards, concealed gun permits, military ID’s, citizenship certificates, and passports as the only forms of permissible voter identification. Student ID cards, issued by the state’s colleges and universities, and other forms of government

identification, including a voter registration card, are not acceptable forms of ID under the law.

The ability to utilize concealed gun licenses, as a form of acceptable voter identification highlights the reality that these new laws were created to favor a specific demographic, while disenfranchising others. Why would a state deliberately violate the civil rights of millions of its residents? Research shows that if African-Americans and Latinos successfully turned

out to vote, many so-called red states would become blue.

A Congress controlled by Democrats would guarantee a minimum wage of $10.10 an hour. This would occur during the first 100 days of a new Congress. Additionally, increased access to early childhood education would become a reality, and the Equal Pay Act, which ensures that women earn the

same wages as their male counterparts, would go into effect. But none of these vital changes will occur without proper voter education, and participation. To be prepared for the November 4th election, I encourage all voters to prepare themselves by visiting www.sos.state.tx.us to confirm their registration status. Voters can also visit www.votetexasgov to learn

their correct polling places, and know their rights.

Do not allow yourself to be denied your right to vote based on technicalities. Educate yourself and vote on November 4th to strengthen our democracy.

IVAN “PUDGE” RODRIGUEZ

featured guest at Crohn’s & Colitis

Foundation of America’s dinner

The North Texas Chapter of the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America (CCFA) will host its third annual fundraising dinner on Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at the Belo Mansion in Dallas, featuring special guest Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez, Texas Rangers’ Hall of Famer and 14-time All Star standout catcher.

Evan Grant with The Dallas Morning News will join “Pudge” Rodriguez on stage to lead a personal discussion with the baseball Hall of Famer, who earned an all-time record 13 Rawlings Gold Gloves for his defensive work behind the plate, including 10 in a row from 1992-2001 while throwing out nearly 42% of runners attempting to steal in his career. Ivan is now the Special Assistant to the General Manager for the Texas Rangers.

Known collectively as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis affects 1 in 200 people. They are painful, medically incurable diseases that attack the digestive system. Many patients require numerous hospitalizations and surgery. Most people diagnosed with an IBD begin to develop symptoms between the ages of 15 and 35; however the incidence is rapidly increasing in children.

This year, CCFA North Texas will be honoring three individuals for their dedication and commitment to furthering CCFA’s mission. Gary Morchower, M.D.

will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award for his pioneering work in starting the CCFA North Texas Chapter thirty-five years ago. Dr. Morchower has continued to be a strong leader in the Dallas medical community, as the founding pediatric gastroenterologist in Dallas as well as a highly acclaimed, caring general pediatrician.

Annette Cox will be presented with CCFA’s Volunteer of the Year Award for her devoted efforts through CCFA’s Team Challenge, half-marathon endurance training program, as a back to back VIP and Top 5 Fundraiser in the Country, raising over $25,000.

Annette serves on CCFA North Texas’ Leadership Board and will be participating in her third half marathon this December in Dallas. Annette’s motivation and devotion to CCFA’s mission is driven by her eleven-year-old son Gavin who is living with Crohn’s disease.

Seventeen-year-old Tariq Washington-Walker of Duncanville will be presented with CCFA’s Rising Star Award for his perseverance and courageous battle with Crohn’s disease. Tariq has been battling Crohn’s since age 11 and has undergone ileostomy surgery.

This summer, he attended one of CCFA’s support services, Camp Oasis, a co-ed residential camp program that enriches the lives of children with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis by providing them with a safe and supportive camp community. Being part of a peer group that shares the same experiences fosters motivation, provides encouragement and delivers positive reinforcement for youth learning to cope with their disease and gain self-esteem.

Funds raised from the thrid annual dinner will support CCFA’s mission-critical research, education, and support programs. To learn more about the event and purchase tickets, visit http://online.ccfa.org/thirdannualdinner or call 972-386-0607.

Although to the casual listener Malcolm X may have lacked the statuesque splendor of a Martin Luther King, his plainspoken prophecies and preachments were in many cases well received.

On April 3, 1964, just four years and one day before the assassination of Dr. King, Malcolm traveled to the Corey United Methodist Church in Cleveland Ohio and delivered a speech that will never be forgotten.

“The Ballot or the Bullet” is a classic speech; so much so that it is ranked seventh among the top 100 speeches delivered in America during the 20th century by 137 leading scholars who reviewed significant speeches.

And while his words have reached “antique” status, the words and wisdom that Malcolm imparted was as pressing and poignant today in the state of Texas and to this nation as it ever was before. Here in Texas, from the gubernatorial race to the local races for dogcatcher, what Malcolm reiterated about the power of the ballot will make all the difference in how we spend the next 20 to 50 years.

In fact, here are three quotes lifted right out of this marvelous missive and sagacious sermon that I would lift for your attention and review.

1. It's time for us to submerge our differences and realize that it is best for us to first see that we have the same problem, a common problem —

a problem that will make you catch hell whether you're a Baptist, or a Methodist, or a Muslim, or a nationalist.

Whether you're educated or illiterate, whether you live on the boulevard or in the alley, you're going to catch hell just like I am.

2. What does this mean? It means that when white people are evenly divided, and Black people have a bloc of votes of their own, it is left up to them to determine who's going to sit in the White House and who's going to be in the dog house.

3. Don’t be throwing out any ballots. A ballot is like a bullet. You don’t throw your ballots until you see a target, and if that target is not within your reach, keep your ballot in your pocket.

As always in Dallas County, African-Americans have a chance to leverage the final decisions and choices at the polling place. Additionally, very heavy turnouts in urban areas across the state are the only chance that Wendy Davis or any Democrat running for a statewide office, has toward claiming those posts.

The Republicans have held rule and reign in the state of Texas for the last 20 years and although there is in arguably some good economic news for millionaires, the state fails and lags behind so many others in the important areas of healthcare, education, and most importantly, opportunity.

Malcolm X was right and we should heed his call to action. Call your parents, your family, your friends, and yes even your enemies and tell them that they need to get out and vote.  And by the way, when we take Malcolm's words and apply them to our present

demographics, we are duty bound to implore Hispanics and poor White people to vote with us.  It’s in their personal best interests.

In 2014, 50 years after the Ballot or the Bullet speech, we should adapt Malcolm’s motive,

mission, and mindset. By now, because you are an intelligent crowd, you are wondering now what Malcolm X said about the bullet. Don’t worry about it. It doesn’t

concern you, because there is no reason to choose the bullet if you have never fully used the ballot…Just VOTE!!!

50 Years Later…The Ballot or the Bullet?

So I must admit,  I'm a little embarrassed to say this, but I

have never read a Zane book!

So the thought of actually going to a stage play and seeing the latest book, "The Other Side of the Pillow," unveiled on stage, yeah I was pretty intrigued.

I've heard her books can be racy, over-sexualized and downright nasty!

But this play reminded me of why I'm proud to be..a single, smart, confident, educated Black woman.

It starts off with the sexy actress Patrice Fisher conducting a monologue on why she is a bitter, single woman.

And I can relate, she went especially hard on the men, calling them out for wanting to sleep around with numerous women and even referred to them as  sharing a community of [fill in the blank].

The star of the show, the very handsome Christian Keyes, who often goes shirtless [Thank you Jesus] enters into the play as the man who is not trying to

be the typical man whore and player, but instead, someone trying to fall in love and be in a monogamous relationship.

I won't spoil the story line, but I can tell you there are some feel good moments, racy conversations and thought provoking points in the play where you will evaluate your own life.

Frenchie Davis, as you remember from American Idol, plays Fisher’s best friend and bellows out a tune that will have you clapping.

Original Miami Basketball Wives reality star Jennifer

Williams has made the transition from Reality TV to theatre, playing the

supporting role overcoming her own obstacles.

With less than two months of prep time, well-

known TBAAL founder Curtis King directed and put together a great play that will have single women everywhere trying to find a good man so they can be on the other side of the pillow!ZANE’s THE OTHER SIDE OF THE PILLOW hit bookstores on August 5,

2014 and now it's

making its World premiere at The Black Academy of Arts and Letters (TBAAL) in a one-week run with eight (8) performances, Tuesday through Sunday, October 21-26, 2014.

Jesus Who? Jesus Why?mystify many of my so called and

some real friends, when it comes to my recognized newest super hero. If you allow yourself to view Christianity as some kind of sanitized version of European colonialism, then it is no wonder that many regard this version of religion as a cop-out when compared to more ancient religions of the world; particularly those with African origin.

However, when you do due diligence and study, it becomes clear how the religion of Christ has been manipulated down through the ages for political and economic purposes. Man still kills in the name of his or her God, whatever that name might be.

Religious conflict is still the single biggest reason people die at the hands of their fellow man. Really check out the Middle East, Lebanon, Pakistan, and India. Look at the so called ‘hot spots’ around the globe and I’ll bet you find religious persecution of some type at the center of the conflict.

But, before I go too far down this road, allow me to put forward the life of Christ as one, which I am in awe of and one which has caught and held not only my attention, but all of my respect, admiration, praise and worship.

As I’ve said, to whomever will listen, Jesus was and forever will be a bad man. Folks, you can say whatever

you want to but He was indeed a man’s man.

As a matter of fact, what wasn’t

Jesus? He was a revolutionary. He was probably a socialist given his predisposition to feed the hungry and take care of the poor. He was definitely anti establishment. I don’t know anyone more against the status quo than Christ. He was outspoken, shameless, selfless, compassionate, passionate, an equal opportunity employer self-confident and self-aware.

Can you name a more committed individual to his beliefs? This guy was a blessing to anyone who would listen, a teacher, a provider, a source of strength and of course an obedient son respectful of His elders and, I suppose, in so many ways, larger than life. I am not trying to portray Jesus as something or someone whom He wasn’t.

I’m just trying to give you a perspective on why He is my Lord and Savior. God, or Godliness aside, this

man I’ve come to admire so much for what He stood for, and certainly what He said He came to die for. Me. I mean come on. Who wouldn’t want to lead men on a path of resistance to eliminate their persecution for what they believe in? Who wouldn’t want to change the hearts and minds of people to be more accepting of mankind’s differences in order to accept their similarities within the human race?

But more than anything else, who among us wouldn’t want to change the face of the world by bringing it a concept of love so strong that even death cannot weaken it; but by death strengthen it for all time?

I’m telling you, the more I see Jesus, the more I see in human terms

why those who can, continue to undermine, distort and dilute the reality of the man.

To Him, neither wealth, nor class, nor birthright distinguished one in the great scheme of things. Preferential treatment is not accorded one based on circumstance. The measure of any man comes in terms of love, prayer, faith, service and acceptance of God as God. I keep telling y’all, Jesus was a bad boy. But if you don’t know Him for yourself, firsthand, I’m afraid you’ll fall prey to the version given you by those who have their best interest at heart and not yours. That includes priests and pastors, kings and presidents, CEOs, capitalists and communists; anyone who would keep you down so they might stay up. I could go on forever but that is not my intent today.

Jesus is forever, not me. I’m just here for the moment trying to give you the basis for making the most out of the opportunity of this platform. Jesus came to be blessing. I’m just trying to follow His lead.

May God bless and keep you always.

One of the largest Greek-lettered International sororities Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. is a nonprofit community-based organization. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority was organized over 94years ago on the campus of Howard University in Washington, D.C. and its members are primarily African American.

For almost 100 years, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. has made significant contributions to more than 600 communities in the United States, West Africa, Germany and the Caribbean through volunteer work and outreach services. More specifically, the members are involved in the granting of scholarships, youth development projects, child care development centers, as well as women's health issues.

Founded January 16, 1920, Zeta began as an idea conceived by five coeds at Howard University in Washington D.C.: Arizona Cleaver, Myrtle Tyler, Viola Tyler, Fannie Pettie and Pearl Neal. These five women, also known as our Five Pearls, dared to depart from the traditional coalitions for black women and sought to establish a new organization predicated on the precepts of Scholarship, Service, Sisterly Love and Finer Womanhood. It was the ideal of the Founders that the Sorority would reach college women in all parts of the country who were sorority minded and desired to follow the founding principles of the organization. Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc.

Since its inception, the Sorority has chronicled a number of firsts. Zeta Phi Beta was the first Greek-letter organization to charter a chapter in

Africa (1948); to form adult and youth auxiliary groups; to centralize its operations in a national headquarters; and to be constitutionally bound to a fraternity, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Incorporated.

Zeta's national and local programs include endowment of its National Educational Foundation, community outreach services and support of multiple affiliate organizations. Zeta chapters and auxiliary groups have given untotaled hours of voluntary service to educate the public, assist youth, provide scholarships, support organized charities and promote legislation for social and civic change.

A nonprofit organization, Zeta Phi Beta is incorporated in Washington, D.C. and in the state of Illinois. The dues and gifts of its members support the Sorority.

Kappa Zeta Chapter of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. was organized at the home of Helen Wilson Johnson in

December of 1931, with approximately 12 additional members. Like other Zeta chapters, Kappa Zeta holds high the sorority’s ideals of Service, Scholarship, Sisterly Love, and Finer Womanhood. Kappa Zeta chapter has provided Zeta Phi Beta Sorority with two of its oldest and most long standing traditions Blue Revue and “Woman of the Year" (1946 -1948). Today, "Woman of the Year" observances are included in most Finer Womanhood celebrations throughout Zetadom.

Since 1971, Zeta Phi Beta has enjoyed a partnership with the March of Dimes in an effort to encourage women to seek prenatal care within the first trimester of pregnancy, thereby increasing the prevention of birth defects and infant mortality. Known as the Stork's Nest Program, this collaboration encourages participation and healthy behaviors during the pregnancy through two components - incentives and education. The Dallas

Stork's Nest is operated by Kappa Zeta Chapter through its 501c3 Charitable Arm, Stork's Nest Charity Fund of Dallas (SNCFD). Through this Charitable Arm, donations of new and used infant and maternity items are accepted as well as contributions of layette items, baby beds, high chairs, car seats, strollers, play pens, and/or anything an expectant mother may need for herself or her baby.

Like the national body Kappa Zeta Chapter is honored to have formed many wonderful community-based partnerships over the past 83 years. Whether administering our Z-HOPE program or giving financial assistance through our Education Foundation, we do so with the understanding that service to the community is our greatest legacy. Over 83 years strong, Kappa Zeta chapter continues to strive to live up to the sorority’s founding precepts. As members of a community-conscious, action.

The United Nations Association of the USA (UNA-USA) and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), Inc. have embarked on a new partnership with the aim of creating global citizens and fostering new audiences to better support the United Nations.

The partnership, set to last until mid-2016, will engage a new generation of “ambassadors” in the vital work of the UN, through globally focused workshops and activities, including Model UN simulations.

As part of the partnership, UNA-USA has provided 10 Alpha Kappa Alpha regional representatives with training, tools, and resources to empower more than 900 local chapters of the sorority

to bring UN-centered educational programming to local high schools and communities.

Alpha Kappa Alpha members will now have the resources needed to organize classroom Model UN simulations, conduct community outreach activities, and celebrate UN milestones including UN Day.

These activities will create new constituencies in support of the UN while educating them on the global impact of the UN’s transformative work.

“Our chapters are excited to be able to implement the UNA/USA Global Classrooms Project to prepare today’s youth for an increasingly global and complex society,” said

Dorothy Buckhanan Wilson, International President of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. “Through this initiative, AKA members will work with high school students in partnership with the UNA-USA staff to expand understanding of the United Nations’ mission and focus.”

“We’re thrilled to be partnering with AKA,” said UNA-USA Executive Director Chris Whatley. “The Model UN experience is instrumental in creating global citizens and college- and career-ready kids. This partnership will bring Model UN to communities that have previously not had the opportunity to engage in this kind of hands on experience.”

"Our people have made the mistake of confusing the methods with the objectives. As long as we agree on objectives, we should never fall out with each other just because we believe in different methods, or tactics, or strategy. The South Dallas Cultural Center (SDCC) has just announced BLACK PAIN/BLACK POWER – a season of provocative theater for 2014/2015. Theater lovers will be captivated by “Speed Killed My Cousin”, a searing story of a female Iraq vet who is struggling with the aftermath of her post-war life and her family ghosts.

Playwright Linda Parris Bailey captures all the angst and pain of PTSD in this theatrical presentation on 10/30 - 11/1. The second production will take a trip back to the 1960s Civil Rights Era in Mississippi with Jonathan Norton’s newest play, "Mississippi Goddam” which chronicles the atmosphere during the days leading up to Medgar Evers assassination on 2/19 - 3/8.

The season ends with two tragedies that occurred in Natchez MS and Chicago Il. in two different eras but both in places where Black nightspots became Black death traps. Cristal Chanelle Truscott’s “The Burnin” uses music to take us into the world of dirty politics & the complexities of race, gender and community during times of survival on 4/9 - 4/11. “We are very excited about this upcoming season. The running theme in each piece is conscious and fluent with painful circumstances and powerful sustainability. Unfortunately some of the painful issues are still relevant today. We expect to have invigorating dialogue after each presentation to not only discuss issues but also identify solutions for the progression of the community we serve,” says Vicki Meek, manager of the SDCC.

Dear Alma,

Three years after my divorce I met a really nice man. I am 34 years old, financially secure with no children.

So far we make each other happy and get along really well. We both pay for things when we go out. I own my stuff, condo and car, and so does he. When we go out, never dutch, one or the other picks up the tab and it’s never been a problem.

Here is my issue: He invited me to go with him to meet his family. Then he said the other night, “When are you going to get your ticket? Let me know so I can make sure we’re on the same flight.”

I was appalled that he wants me to pay my own way. I think that’s totally wrong. What do you think?

V.B., Shreveport, La.

Dear VBWhat? He wants you to pay your

way. Girl, can you hear that chirping

chickadee, “cheap-cheap-cheap-cheap!!” LOL!! All I can say is, you’ve got an extremely fugal brother on your hands. To the left, to the left, I hear you and I totally agree. On the other hand, my sane

mind, to the right, to the right, is tugging at me saying, “If he has a serious savings account and meticulously maintains his finances, that might be a good thing for you.”

I mean, really; he’s not asking you to go in half on his root canal. It’s a trip.

Maybe he sees it as a vacation (you know how men are). Which I’m sure you do not (you know how

women can be). Seriously, tho, going to visit your companion’s family is not a vacation, and you need to clarify. Unless you decide to have a straight-up conversation with him,

I’d say give him the benefit of the doubt.

I don’t think there’s any intent of wrongdoing here. Since you guys share the cost most of the time anyway, and since it bothers you, make this a teachable moment in your new relationship and explain it to him.

Let him know that visiting his family is like buying a special gift. And you’d rather not have to go in the store and get it yourself.

Ask him to cover the cost of the flights and you volunteer to cover the hotel. If you’re staying with family, you can cover food and entertainment expenses.

Don’t be mad; if things work out between you two, you’ll be glad he’s frugal, especially during your retirement years.

In this economy, a man that resists unnecessary spending and prefers to save his coins is a keeper.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness

Month By Vicki Hallum, RN, CBCNBreast Cancer Nurse Navigator, Methodist Charlton Medical Center Being diagnosed

with breast cancer can be a scary and unfamiliar path. Fortunately, patients at Methodist Charlton Medical Center in Dallas have Nurse Navigator Vicki Hallum, RN, CBCN to help guide them through the challenges. Vicki says it’s her job as nurse navigator to walk through the experience with the patient, providing education and emotional support along the way.

With almost 20 years of nursing experience, including oncology, radiation oncology, chemotherapy, research, and stem cell/bone marrow transplants, Vicki feels she is uniquely qualified to communicate and discuss all the issues surrounding cancer with both compassion and wisdom.

Vicki suggests that a cancer patient asks the following questions of the doctor they are considering choosing.

1. Are you a specialist in my type of cancer? How many cases like mine have you treated in the last year? Some oncologists specialize in specific carcinomas such as breast, sarcomas, and blood cancers such as lymphoma and leukemia. Doctors generally have better success treating a condition if they have a lot of experience with it. You’ll need to know if the physician is a specialist in your specific type of cancer.

2. Are you board certified and how many years have you been in practice? Board certification and experience ensure the physician is a specialist in his or her field of expertise.

3. Which hospital(s) are you associated with and do you have admitting privileges? Does the hospital have an oncology floor? Research the hospital to learn the specialty services offered. A hospital with an oncology floor is paramount to a patient who is being treated for cancer in the event you need to be hospitalized and need support services or administration of chemotherapy agents. A designated oncology floor will employ nurses specialized in oncology nursing. You also want to know if the physician is allowed to admit patients to the hospital and if the hospital is nearby.

4. What other specialist will be on my team and involved in making decisions in my care? Treating cancer is a multidisciplinary approach that usually involves a medical oncologist, radiation oncologist, surgeons specializing in cancer surgical treatments, specialized oncology nurses, and other ancillary specialist when needed.

5. Do you have a nurse navigator on your team? Nurse navigators are specialized nurses, usually for specific oncological cancers, who eliminate barriers to health care for the patient. They also offer specialized oncology support such as educational materials, facilitate support groups, and offer other supportive services specific to the patient’s needs.

6. Are you involved in clinical trials? Clinical trials can offer a cancer patient access to new therapies only available in the trial stage. Equally important is that clinical trials offer new breakthroughs in cancer research that would not be successful without patient enrollment.

7. How can you be reached after hours? Is there always someone on call? Having a physician who is available after hours is vital to the patient’s well being and safety, especially after a surgery and during chemotherapy sessions. An oncological emergency needs to be treated immediately and is

sometimes a matter of life and death. The after-hours physician can assess the acuity of the patient’s needs, and if necessary, direct the patient to the ED and call in medical orders for intervention which can save valuable time and lives.

8. Do you offer treatment at your site or do I have to travel somewhere else? Most cancer centers offer chemotherapy infusion services and radiation therapy services at the center where you visit your physician. This ensures continuity in patient care, immediate access to the physician if needed, specialized nurses performing the services and geographic convenience to the patient.

Political analysts, both mainstream and Black news

media and intellectuals around the country have given their

grade evaluation on President Barack Obama’s first 100

days in office, marked on April 30. Here’s how several

people from the local front graded the new president.

Congresswoman EddieBernice Johnson

Grade:A“I am deeply impressed with the progress that

President Barack Obama has made during the first 100days of his administration. Already we are seeingevidence of the administration’s plan to dig our countryout of recession and develop long-term, sustainable pros-perity. President Obama has made two trips abroad, proving to us and to the world that he intends to

repair our frayed alliances and restore ourinternational leadership.

Finally, the Obama adminis-tration’s code of ethicshas broughtmuch-neededtransparency andaccountability to theWhite House.

President Obamais delivering on thechange that hepromised.”

Senator Kay

Bailey HutchisonGrade: C

“In just 100 days, we’ve seen an alarming accel-

eration of policies that will take America down the

wrong track. The administration has proposed

trillions of dollars in new spending, which will

result in higher taxes on Americans, while sharply

raising our indebtedness to foreign creditors. On the national security front, I am

very concerned aboutthe President’s intention toclose Guantanamo without aworkable plan to relocatedetainees. It is mysincere hope that, movingforward,

theadminis-

tration willadopt the productive,

responsible approach to ournation’s challenges thatAmericansdeserve.”(The office of John Cornyn of

PROPOSITIONS

1 AND 2

Dallas is abuzz at theelection issues beforethem on May 9 whencitizens are asked tovote on the controver-sial ConventionCenter Hotel that isbeing backed byMayor

Leppert. But what doesvoting “no” and voting“yes” mean?It is important to

remember that thepropositions are toamend the Dallas CityCharter which, amongother things, gives thecity the power to acquireproperty for any publicpurpose. The propositionsare worded to prohibit thecity from acting on thesebefore stated powers. Therefore, if a citizen wouldlike the city to maintainthose powers, they are tovote NO and vice versa.
