Toowong Village Fashion Advisor, Kellie Alderman, reveals her style tips, tricks and trends for mums

wanting a wardrobe revamp.

1. What is your favourite fashion piece in your wardrobe?I have a great lightweight trench coat that I wear all winter with jeans, leggings and dresses. It’s great for day and night. I also have a big collection of scarves from warm cashmere to soft silks that can change the look and feel of an outfit in an instant.

2. What key pieces should every woman have in her wardrobe?Great shape wear, jeans that suit her body shape, a lightweight trench coat, flat black boots, a well-cut blazer, a stretch pencil skirt, the perfect little black dress, some statement jewels and at least one thing from this season that brings everything up to the minute (this season I’m adding a heeled ankle boot and some statement trousers).

3. How should women incorporate current trends into their everyday outfits?I like to start with colour. Pick a new-season colour that you know will suit your skin tone and hair colour and start by adding a scarf, shoe, bag or piece of jewellery in that colour that you can work back with existing items in your wardrobe. As you get a bit older you develop better instincts about what works for you. Just

because there is a military-inspired trend, you know that camouflage pants and studded-t-shirts are not going to fit in with your lifestyle, but a nice pair of khaki leggings or jeans might be just the thing to make last year’s black blazer feel new this season. It’s about finding a way into the trend that suits you.

4. How has your mum influenced your style?My mum liked well-cut basics and was a big believer in buying the best quality you could afford, which is something I also believe. My grandmother was a bowerbird and had a big collection of handbags, costume jewellery, shoes and coats. I’m lucky enough to still have many of these precious things. My style has fallen somewhere in between the two.

5. If you could raid anyone’s closet who would it be?If I could time travel, Elizabeth Taylor. The jewels! The dresses! I love the sophistication and glamour of that era. Today, Nicole Richie for the cool boho vibe, Gwyneth Paltrow for chic simplicity and Charlotte Casiraghi for that regal, preppy look she does so well. Also Governor-General Quentin Bryce, to store for when I’m older. She is a lesson in how to dress for any woman over 60.

lEmon mEringUE piE200ml lemon juice 4 lemons, zested 200g caster sugar 4 large eggs 4 egg yolks 180g unsalted butter 1 blind baked tart shell 180g caster sugar 3 egg whites

METHODCombine lemon juice, zest, sugar, eggs, yolks and half the butter in a saucepan placed over a medium heat. Whisk constantly until the curd thickens and starts to bubble. Cook for a further minute.

Remove from the heat and whisk in remaining butter. Cover and cool to room temperature. Spoon the cold curd into the tart shell and place in the fridge.

To prepare meringue, place the 180g of sugar into a 200°C oven for 5 minutes. Meanwhile whisk egg whites until they are frothy then stream in the hot sugar. Whisk until cold and a firm, shiny meringue has formed - about 15 minutes.

Spoon meringue onto the lemon curd using the spoon to create a pattern. Bake at 150°C for 6 minutes then chill before serving.

who or what inspireD your love of cooking?

I’d love to say it was on bended knee at my mum’s side shelling peas. However, the inspiration came when I had already been cooking for 5 years and moved to France for work. Their commitment to utilising only that which is available locally, and cooking it as simply as possible, has been how I have cooked for almost 20 years now.

what’s your favourite quick anD easy Meal for winter?

An Irish stew prepared using lamb neck. The hands on cooking time is no more than 15 minutes. The lamb does need to simmer for a few hours until it’s tender, though. Have it with a handmade loaf of soda bread (5 minutes to make!) and a pint of stout and I am a happy cook.

if you haD to choose one Dish to eat at every Meal for the rest of your life, what woulD it be?

It would be pasta. I love its versatility and ability to partner with delicate and robust flavours alike.

what’s the best thing you’ve ever cookeD for your MuM?

One time (and one time only) I caught a brown trout on the Arney River in County Fermanagh. I was so proud; I held the tiny, wee fish aloft, turned to face my brothers in jubilation, lost my balance and

fell backwards into the river. undaunted,

I held onto the poor fish and ran

through the town, soaking wet and screaming, to show my family what I had caught.

I baked it in foil to feed the

family. What I didn’t see was the quizzical

look on my mother’s face on how I expected it

to feed all six of us.

what aDvice woulD you give to kitchen beginners who want to create an iMpressive Meal?

Don’t try to do what restaurants do. They have a large brigade of chefs and a full time washer-upperer! A perfectly roasted piece of meat or fish with a few simple salads down the table will impress much more than some tricky concoction. You are meant to enjoy yourself too!

Whether you tackle this on your own or make it a family experience, this Lemon Meringue Pie is worth the wait.
