Under the guidance of Rev. Billy Brath, our Facilitator from LCEF (which offers the planning assistance), we held a meeting in early March with many key leaders to discuss hopes and aspirations for the near term. We look forward to inviting you all to share your own hopes for our ministry, but in the meantime please join with our Ministry Clarity Prayer Director, Deacon Wendy Krolides, in taking time to pray for the process and the outcome of effective and encouraging ministry following the pandemic. Over the next several months I will be sharing with you my heart for our mission as I review the elements of our Mission Statement, which is our primary guiding directive for our ministry. You probably are familiar that our mission, for both our church and school, is “to know, live and share the love of Christ.” We begin our review with the first part, “to know.” To know the love of Christ is our first and most personal priority. To “know the love of Christ” means to experience God’s love as a matter of personal faith and affirm that Christ “has redeemed me, a lost and condemned person, purchased and won me from all sins, from death, and from the power of the devil; not with gold or silver, but with His holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death” (Luther’s Small Catechism, 2nd Article). Our church is a community of people who have experienced the forgiveness of sins that Jesus gives freely (Ephesians 2:8) through His Word and the Sacraments. To have the forgiveness of sins means to also have the assurance of God’s strength for this life and the promise of life everlasting (John 10:10). Everything that we are as a church flows from this personal relationship with Jesus, which has been given by God our Father, won for us by Jesus’ death and resurrection, and is empowered in our lives, not by our strength but by the Holy Spirit (Matthew 28:18-19). Do you know the love of Christ? Our ministry connects thousands of people each year with God’s Word, and through His Word and the Sacraments people come to know the love of Christ or grow in their depth of knowledge of Christ’s love. May God help us to create and sustain programs and ministry plans that keep this a true priority. OneoftheunexpectedbenefitsofthispandemicyearhasbeenappreciatinggiftsfortheeyesinWestchester.Walkingfrequentlyinnewplaces,Ihavediscoveredsomuchnaturalaswellascreatedbeauty.ThissculpturegardenofJesustheGoodShepherdisnestledintheMaryknollcomplexinOssining.Maryknollprovidesaretirementcommunityandfinalresting
placeforCatholicmissionaries,anditwashitparticularlyhardbyCOVIDlastspring.Iwasstunnedtocountalmost20freshlyduggraves.Nevertheless,theirgroundsarefilledwithvariousfloweringplantsandtrees,intriguingreligiousworksofartfromaroundtheworld,andwindingpathsforcontemplativewalking.
TheGospelofJohnincludesanextendedmetaphorontheGoodShepherd,oneexcerptofwhichweheareveryyearontheFourthSundayafterEaster.Itisapopularandwell-knowntheme,butinourtextforthisyear,John10:11-18,Iwasstruckbytwoideasinparticular.ThefirstisthatJesusidentifiesHimselfasthe“Good”Shepherd.Thisisincontrasttothereligiousleaderswho,likeanearliergenerationdescribedinEzekiel34,weresupposedtotendtheflockbutmerelyactedasa“hiredhand”whocaresnothingforthesheep.Whiletheywouldrunawayinthefaceofdangerandabandonthesheep,JesusclaimedthesheepasHisveryownandwasthereforewillingtolaydownHislifeforthem.Ifyouhavebeeninapositionofleadership,youknowitisbothchallengingandrewardingtobeashepherd.AmIpreparedtodowhatisnecessarytobeagoodcaretaker?Aremydecisionsbestforthosedependingonme?ThegoodnewsisthatJesushasdonethehardestpartandisalwaystheretocarryusthroughthedifficultmoments.
Whatabouttheperspectiveofthesheep?ThefinalthingJesusaddsisthatHisflockislargerthanwhatiscurrentlyinthesheeppen.Israelhadbeentrainedtokeepitselfseparatedfromotherpeoplessoasnottobeledastraybytheirfalsereligions.Wecansimilarlygetcaughtupinboundariesandfearoftheunfamiliar,orsimplyforgetthatGodhasplansandpeoplewehadnoideaexisted.JesussignaledtoIsraelthatanyperceivedseparationwascomingtoanend.Therearemoresheepoutthere,andtheywilllistentoJesusandbelieveinHim.Oneflock,oneShepherd.WearecalledtobesheepwhostaytunedtothevoiceoftheGoodShepherd,andwhowelcomeeveryoneintothefold.
Whenyouconsiderthelifeofamissionary,youseeapersondedicatedtocaringfortheflock.Iwouldventuretoguessthattheretiredmissionariesseethemselvesbothasashepherd,aspiringtooffercarethewayJesusdoes,andasoneofthelittlesheepwhocandependontheGoodShepherd.Thereareplentyofwaystoliveourlivesinservicetothosearoundus.Whetherwehaveanactiveleadership(shepherding)roleorsimplyfindourselvesinthepasture,weknowthatwearelovedandsafe.TheLordismyshepherd,Ishallnotwant.

RecentlyIhavebeenmakingmywaythroughthebookofLamentations,whichisbelievedtohavebeenwrittenbyJeremiahtheprophet.Jeremiahwasalsoknownasthe“weepingprophet.”HewascalledbyGodtowarnbothIsraelandJudahoftheircomingdestructioninlightoftheiridolatrousways.Jeremiahmetmuchresistance,mistreatment,andabuse.
IntheendhewitnessedthewordsheprophesiedcometofruitionasJerusalemfellandwasdestroyedbeforehisveryeyes.ItisbelievedthathewroteLamentationsfromthislocation.
Jeremiahtellsuswhathewitnessed:hungerandsearchforfood,deadbodieslyinginthestreets,themockeryoftheBabyloniansastheylookedonthecitytheyhadtornapart,andapeopleutterlydejectedandworndown.Interestingly,inthethroesofsuchanexperience,JeremiahthenbeginstowriteaboutthesteadfastloveoftheLord.Infact,here’swhathewrites:“ButthisIcalltomind,andthereforeIhavehope:ThesteadfastloveoftheLordneverceases,Hismerciesnevercometoanend;theyareneweverymorning;greatisyourfaithfulness.”
Despitetheheartbreakinallthathewitnessed,Jeremiahwasabletoholddeartothisonetruth.HedidnotseektoexplainawaythepunishmentthathadcomeupontheIsraelitesfortheirunfaithfulness.Heknewthatitwasdeserving;hetriedtowarnthemandwasmetwithrejection.ButhealsoknewhowdeepGod’slovewasforhimandhispeople.Heknewthatsuchchastisement,howeverawfulitmayhavebeen,haditsplace.Godcananddoesusesuchthingsforourbetterment.Infact,itisofteninsuchdirecircumstancesthatourfaithgrows.AsweLutheransliketosay,weneedbothlawandgospelandwecan’thaveonewithouttheother.OrasJeremiahputsit,“FortheLordwillnotrejectforever.AlthoughHecausesgrief,HewillhavecompassionaccordingtotheabundanceofHissteadfastlove.”
