Course and Unit Handbook

Structure and content

The handbook is divided into three main sections:

(a) Undergraduate course details, page 1;

(b) Unit details (including departmental entries),page 123;

(c) Postgraduate course details, page 481.

The discipline clusters

The University’s courses have been grouped in fivediscipline clusters as follows:•Commerce and Law, page 1, 482•Education, page 25, 487•Health Science, page 37, 496•Humanities, Social Sciences & The Arts, page 45, 499•Science and Technology, page 80, 510

The courses

A full list of all coursework courses is given on theinside front cover.

Course details

These include such important information as the coursecode, the campus(es) where the course is taught, itsduration, details of admission requirements and anyprerequisites (over and above those listed below asnecessary for general entry into the University), itsobjectives and its structure.

The courses are outlined in the various schedules whichindicate the units which need to be studied or whichmay be taken in order to complete a given course. Theseschedules list the unit code, its title, the year andsemester in which it is offered and the HECS weight ofeach unit which is given as a percentage of a full year’sstudy load.

The unit title indicates the subject matter of the unit; butfuller details may be found in the ‘Unit details’ sectionwhich begins on page 123. To find the details of a givenunit, it is necessary to note its code number as all units arelisted in alphanumeric order of their code number.

Unit details

These include a fuller description of the unit, its contentand objectives. Other details listed may include (whereknown at the time of publication) the names of teachingstaff, the campus where it is taught, the HECS weight(which may vary depending on the course in which theunit is studied), the teaching pattern, any prerequisiteand corequisite units, mutual exclusions, the method ofassessment, and any required texts or other materials. Itis important to note that these details, which are based oninformation which was correct at the time of publication, maybe altered by the University. Students are advised to checkthe details prior to enrolling in any course or units.

To determine which course(s) a given unit forms a partof, note the unit code number and turn to the ‘Index –unit code to course’ on page xi. This index lists the unitsmentioned in the ‘Course details’ section of theHandbook and gives the course code(s) and pagenumber of the course(s).

Note: a given unit may appear in more than one schedule orspecimen course outline within any one course.

Discipline entries

At the beginning of each group of related units (unitswhose codes begin with the same three letters), theremay be a discipline entry which gives specific detailsfor those who wish to major in that discipline or whowish to study some units from that discipline. Studentsshould read these discipline entries with care, whereverthey are given.

semester: teaching period including 14 teaching weeksand a one week break. The latter is known as the mid-semester break.Services and Amenities Fee (S&A Fee): an annual feelevied on all students by the student associations tofund services and amenities. The amount is calculatedon the EFTSU value of each student.specifications: the rules by which a faculty administersa course.sub-dean (also may be called associate dean): a memberof the academic staff who administers student matterson behalf of the academic dean.

sub-major see minor.

summer school: some courses or units require studentsto attend lectures or other University activities duringthe long summer vacation. For administrative purposes,this period is referred to as semester 3.

supplementary examination: students whose examina-tion result has been borderline may be required to sit

another examination. Supplementary examinations aregenerally held in January and July.teaching year: comprises two semesters and twoexamination periods; usually a total of 40 weeks.terminating pass: means the student is not permitted toundertake studies in the same subject at a moreadvanced level.testamur (also called a certificate): the certificateawarded on graduation.undergraduate (study): study undertaken in order togain an associate diploma, diploma, degree or honoursdegree.unit: a set of lectures, seminars, tutorials and /orpractical sessions on a particular topic and theassociated assessment.viva voce: an oral, face-to-face examination.weighting: a measure of the proportion that a unitrepresents of the total credit specified for completion ofa course. The weighting is expressed an EFTSUpercentage. (Typically, a full year’s study is theequivalent of 100%).

Intending mature age students currently over the ageof 19, may apply for admission to the UniversityPreparation Program. Successful completion of thisprogram will assist in gaining admission to degreecourses offered by the University.

Course Code: E0DThe UPP provides an opportunity for mature agestudents to revise, upgrade and establish skills relevantto higher education study in the current academicenvironment.

Admission requirementsThe normal university Mature Age Entry requirementsapply except for the deduction of one year from theminimum age. Students should have a demonstratedlack of access to higher education or educationalopportunities; or have experienced a change in careeror lifestyle. Students should also display a genuineintention to participate in higher education uponcompleting the UPP.

Course ObjectivesThe course provides mature age students with new,revised and upgraded skills in written and interper-sonal communication, study, research and relatedtechniques and strategies, using information technologyin the academic environment and initial experience inup to 4 first year course units.

Course StructureThe course is equivalent to one year full-time study butits unitised structure lends it to part-time study. UPPconsists of 8 units, with a full time equivalent load of 4per semester. Six of these units are core or skills-basedunits, the other two are academic unit based. Abridging Mathematics unit is also offered.

Index – unit code to courseFollow the trail from unit code to course –

from the ‘Unit details’ section of this Handbook to thecourse(s) in which the unit is offered.

Courses are identified by course code, followed by thepage number on which the course is described.

Many of the units are mentioned in more than onecourse and in more than one schedule or ‘specimencourse’ forming part of the course description.

Note: the following list does not include all possiblecourses in which a unit may be studied. Many coursesprovide the opportunity for students to enrol inoptions or electives; these are too many to include andstudents are urged to seek the advice of their coursecoordinator or lecturer.
