How to See Your Daily Schedule and Access Lessons One of the beauties of the OLMS is that there are many ways to navigate around. Here are a few, choose the

method that works best for you.

Method 1: From the Schedule tab of the landing page you will see any overdue assignments listed above all

lessons assigned for today; you may need to scroll down to today’s assignments. Clicking on the lesson or

assignment will open a window with a link to the lesson. Be sure your pop-up blockers are turned off!

Page 3: OLMS How-to Handbook · 2019. 8. 10. · OLMS How-to Handbook This handbook was designed to give students and learning coaches step-by-step instructions for how to use each component

Method 2: From the

Classes tab, click on

any course to see the

lessons assigned by

date. You can (1) click

on the lesson in the

Class Content Box or

(2) click on the lesson

assigned for the day

in the Class Plan.

Method 3: From the menu at the top of the

class page, select Plan. On the new page you

can see the Agenda, which lists all lessons

assigned by day; a daily calendar which shows

an abbreviated list for the day, and the weekly

calendar shown here. Each course is a

different color. When you click on the box, it

will open a window with a link to that lesson.

Have fun navigating around and trying

different paths to your day’s work!

How to Submit Work to Your Teacher in the New OLMS With the new OLMS platform, you will no longer be required to save, collect, and hand in work samples every

quarter. The work that you submit right in your online lessons will become your work samples. Therefore, it’s

very important that you complete and turn in all graded assignments as required. Please note that not every

activity in a lesson is a graded assignment. Most can be completed and checked by your Learning Coach and

only need to be saved in your own digital or paper files. All graded assignments will be labeled as such and will

include a submission link. Quizzes will be automatically submitted and graded by the computer.

Graded assignments will look like this:

They will have a digital document that will need to be opened and completed

(Assignment). Do not turn in the rubrics.

You can complete the assignment online or you can print it out and complete it

by hand (this is especially useful for math!). Once you have completed the

assignment, save it (or scan and save it if completed off line) to a folder on your

computer. I recommend having a folder for each subject. Be sure to include

the subject, lesson number, and your last name in the name you give your document.

Go to the next screen in the lesson. This is how you access the “Dropbox” for your assignment.

Your assignment should now appear in the Drop Files box. You can add a message to me if you would like. Be

sure to click Submit when you are finished. You did it!

Step 1 – click on Upload

Step 2 – in the window that opens, navigate to

the folder where you saved your assignment

Step 3 – highlight the assignment and click

open

Page 5: OLMS How-to Handbook · 2019. 8. 10. · OLMS How-to Handbook This handbook was designed to give students and learning coaches step-by-step instructions for how to use each component

For Portfolio assignments, you do not need to upload the

assignment you have chosen if you have already turned it in.

Just complete and upload the Portfolio : Module Reflection

assignment the same way as other assignments.

Discussions will look like this:

To submit a discussion, click on the

blue lesson title. In the new page that

opens, click on

Type the subject in the top bar and

your discussion in the bottom box. Be

sure to follow the guidelines set out in

the lesson – your discussions may be graded!

When you are finished typing, check the

Subscribe to this Post choice and click

Post.

You may now

add comments to other student’s posts

and students can comment on yours.

Remember to be polite!

How to Access Class Connect Sessions and Recordings 1. From your home page, click on the link symbol then Class Connect.

Or: In any course window, click on Go to Class Connect

2. Either way will open a new window with the links to your Class Connect sessions. You can only access

the sessions during the times that they are scheduled. You can’t log in to the 11:00 class at 10:55 or at

11:35, so be sure to come on time!

3. To access prior sessions that were recorded, follow the same steps. Once you are in the CC schedule, click

on week view or the calendar button then the date of the session you want to view. Now when you click on

the link for the session you want to watch, it should open a recording. If no recording is showing, it probably

means I forgot to activate it so please let me know.

At the beginning of the day, you’ll see all your sessions

here. Click on Go to Class Connect for each.

How to Check Progress and Grades As soon as you click on the Classes tab of the OLMS, you’ll see a quick glance of your progress in all of your

courses. There are many other places where you can see more details of your progress and your current grade;

use what works best for you, but be sure to check often! It’s much easier to stay on target than it is to catch up!

Method 1: On each course home page you can see your progress through each lesson, your current grade, and

if you have any overdue assignments.

Method 2: Click on the Progress tab in any course to see a more detailed breakdown of what you are missing,

what grade you got on each

assignment or quiz, and how

much time you have spent in the

course.

To see all assignments and assessments for a course at one glance, click on the Grades tab.

Page 8: OLMS How-to Handbook · 2019. 8. 10. · OLMS How-to Handbook This handbook was designed to give students and learning coaches step-by-step instructions for how to use each component

You will be able to see your grade on each assessment and assignment as well as any feedback your teacher may

have given when grading. Be on the lookout for any feedback that indicates your teacher wasn’t able to open

read your assignment so you can resubmit it. You will need to write down which assignments you need to redo

and access them through the Content tab.

Method 3: Unfortunately, at this time there is no easy way to see progress in all courses at once, but this seems

to come closest. From the Learning Coach homepage, click on the Middle School/High School link on the right of

the screen to enter the OLMS. Next, click on the bar graph under My Students. This will open a student

summary with current grades, number of overdue assignments, and most recent log-in. Warning: The progress

trackers in the old OLS will not reflect the progress made in the new OLMS.

Page 9: OLMS How-to Handbook · 2019. 8. 10. · OLMS How-to Handbook This handbook was designed to give students and learning coaches step-by-step instructions for how to use each component

How to Access and Retake Quizzes To access the quizzes, just keep clicking on the arrows in the lower right corner of the lesson screen until you get to the assessment screen.

Or you can just click right on the assessment from the Contents list on the content page.

Next, click on the link for the quiz and follow the instructions for each question. Be sure to answer all 5 questions. If you don’t like your score, you can retake the quiz by clicking on the highlighted quiz name in the menu box on the right. That will open a new quiz for you. You should see 3 available attempts for each quiz. Be sure to click on the blue Review button and review your original test as well as go back to the lesson for more practice or review before your second attempt.

If you don’t see extra attempts or you have used all available attempts, please contact your teacher for help and additional tries.

How to Print an Assessment from Other Courses

Go to the quiz that you need to print that the teacher has unlocked.

Choose ‘Start Quiz’ or ‘Continue Quiz’

Once in the quiz right click your mouse and choose ‘Select All’ and then right click your mouse again and choose

‘Select All’.

Then open a word document and paste the assessment. The assessment can now be printed off for the student.

How to Update Time Zone from LC Account Time zones must be updated from the LC account in order for students to see CC sessions, due dates,

etc. in the correct time zone. This can be updated quite easily from the LC account and should make

the change for all students associated with that account.

1. Log into the LC Account and click the dropdown next to My Account in the top right corner.

Select Time Zone Settings.

2. Select Pacific Time (US and Canada); Tijuana from the list. Click the box next to apply to all

students.

3. Check all student accounts to make sure the change is effective.

How to Document Attendance

Students are required by California State Law to be engaged in school for 4 to 6 hours on 180 school days each

school year. Attendance in CAVA is automatically documented as follows:

1. Each time a student logs into a course on the OLMS they will be credited with the number of minutes

they are actively engaged in a course, including viewing the lesson, taking an assessment, and typing in a

written assignment.

2. Students are credited with attendance for each Class Connect session they attend including Homeroom,

course instruction, interventions, SAI classes, office hours, and any other CC sessions to which they have

been invited by their teacher. They are not credited with attendance minutes for K12 Club meetings.

We realize that students also spend many minutes doing off-line work such as writing compositions, studying for

tests, practicing concepts in other venues, doing labs, etc. As long as students are making progress and

completing lessons, additional minutes of school are assumed and included. The Learning Coach is not required

to manually document attendance for any of the above on days the student logs in to the OLMS.

When a student does not log in to the OLMS on a school day, the Learning Coach must manually document

the student’s attendance. This is done in three steps:

Step 1: Log into the Learning Coach log-in page. Click on the attendance tab for your student then click on Enter

Attendance Now. Disregard the Days of Missing Attendance and Total Attendance hours, these are no longer

monitored in the OLMS. This tab is used only to record attendance on days the student doesn’t log in.

Once in the attendance screen, (1) use the calendar icon to jump to the day you need; (2) enter the hours that

your student worked in each subject; (3) click Save.

Step 2: Complete an Offline Work Learning Log and submit it to your teacher within 48 hours. Be sure to list all

educational activities the student did on the missing day, including PE. You can use this link to enter the offline

work: http://tinyurl.com/CMS-offline-work-log or you can use the document on the next page.

Step 3: The student must enter all work they completed while offline into the OLMS lessons. There must be

proof of any educational activities or attendance cannot be counted. This would include compositions on which

the student worked, tests for which the student studied, and written assignments on which the student worked.

In other words, there should be increased activity the following day in the OLMS courses for which the student

claimed attendance. If the student’s activity was not directly related to a current lesson, such as a CAVA outing

or visiting an historic site or museum, the student should submit a paragraph describing what was learned to the

teacher.

Because CAVA is an independent study school, it is expected for students to be engaged and attending every

day. When a student is too ill or unable to do any school work for other reasons, please contact your teacher as

soon as possible. If you are planning to travel or miss school for any other reason for 5 or more consecutive

days, please contact your teacher at least three weeks in advance so a travel plan can be created for your

student.

Here are some suggestions for educational activities on days when you can’t access the OLMS:

- If you know ahead of time, print out written assignments or assessments to work on

- Read your current novel for ELA

- Complete a Science lab or work on your Science Investigation

- Work on any compositions that you haven’t completed or submitted

- Read the next chapter in your History book and take notes

- Read in your Classics for Young Readers book

- Work on memorizing your math facts, in Xtramath.com, in GrammarBytes.com, or another online

practice program (does not include Mine Craft or other games!)

- Practice your keyboarding skills

- Work on your World Language lessons

- Do PE!

- Do an Art project that goes with your lessons

- Dig a little deeper into a topic from your lessons, do an online investigation or create a project
