It’s kind of a big deal…
• “Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing.”
– Wikipedia founder, Jimmy Wales

A Culture of Giving
• Almost no co-ordination of effort
• 2% of users (1400 people) make 73.4% of edits
• 0.7% of users (524 people) make 50% of edits
• But… people who make very, very few edits write most of Wikipedia’s content

How do we edit pages
on Wikipedia?

How do we know what’s accurate
on Wikipedia?
![Page 18: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/18.jpg)
“Wikipedia is a great place to start, not end, your research”
Dr. Alex Halavaishttp://alex.halavais.net
![Page 19: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/19.jpg)
The Good Idea:Proper citing of
Wikipedia
![Page 20: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/20.jpg)
Wikipedia pages are dynamic. They typically change over
time.
![Page 21: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/21.jpg)
Wikipedia lets you “Cite this page”.
![Page 22: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
Offers various citation styles
![Page 23: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
Wikipedia pages also featureversion history .
![Page 24: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/24.jpg)
“Freeze your reference” by picking your preferred point
in history
![Page 25: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/25.jpg)
Cite references using the “permalink” to that point in
history
![Page 26: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/26.jpg)
Anatomy of Wikipedia: Revision View
When in doubt, try Wikipedia’s Revision View
![Page 27: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/27.jpg)
The Better Idea:
Going beyond Wikipedia
![Page 28: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/28.jpg)
Wikipedia has numbered citations, linked to references below...
![Page 29: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/29.jpg)
Work from these references. Keep branching outward from
there.
![Page 30: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/30.jpg)
Go through references, picking ones you think are
great for your paper.
![Page 31: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/31.jpg)

Wikipedia is
immense.
![Page 33: I Heart Wikipedia](https://reader034.fdocuments.us/reader034/viewer/2022052301/554941ceb4c9050a4d8b51a4/html5/thumbnails/33.jpg)
Take your time to
understand the
community and culture.

Questions& Answers
hopefully.
