What is Personal Hygiene?
Personal Hygiene is the things we do to care for our bodily health and well being, through cleanliness.
Good personal hygiene is one of the most effective ways to protect ourselves, and others, from illness.

Activity 1:

Think Pair Share
Looking at the continuum pictures and answer the following on your wiki under your own continuum.
Then join with a partner and discuss similarities and differences your had, finally share with the class
1. Which pictures show socially appropriate and inappropriate hygiene.
2. Select a picture from each end of the continuum
How would you feel if this person sat beside you on the bus?
How would you feel if this person walked into your school?
Would you hire this person for a job?
Why do we need hygiene?
One of the most effective ways we have to protect ourselves and others from illness is good personal hygiene.
This means washing your hands, especially, but also your body. It means being careful not to cough or sneeze on others, cleaning things that you touch if you are unwell, putting items such as tissues (that may have germs) into a bin, and using protection (like gloves) when you might be at risk of catching an infection.
Personal hygiene, such as bathing, washing your face, using deodorant, changing sweaty clothes and dental hygiene, is very much dependent on the culture in which you live. In some cultures, it is expected that you will wash your body at least every day and use deodorants to stop body smells. Other cultures have different expectations.

Hygiene Myths
Myth #1: Tanning clears up skin.
Although a tan may temporarily mask acne, the sun can make the skin dry and irritated, leading to more breakouts in the future
Myth #2: Chocolate and greasy foods cause acne
Although eating too many sugary, high-fat foods is never a good idea, studies show that NO SPECIFIC FOODS have been proven to cause acne.

Myth #3: The more you wash your face, the fewer breakouts
As a general rule, wash your face twice a day with mild soap/facewash and water in a circular motion and gently pat dry when you're done
Myth #4: Popping pimples will help them go away faster
By squeezing pimples, you can actually push bacteria, dead skin cells, and oil further into the skin making them worse.

Myth #5: Don’t wear makeup if you want clear skin
No – it’s most definitely not a myth. Poor makeup choices often compound the problem of acne-prone skin. Heavy-duty makeup products used to conceal blemishes often worsens acne. Choosing lighter, oil free products are a better choice.
Myth #6: If you keep getting breakouts, it helps to use more acne medication until the breakouts stop.
Because acne medication contains drying agents like benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid, using too much medication may cause over drying.

Sweating and body odour
Shower or take a bath every day.
Wear antiperspirant deodorant.
Wearing clean clothes, socks, and underwear each day can also help you to feel clean.
Changing clothing after physical activity e.g. sport top and shorts

Skincare Acne often starts in your early teen years because your body is making more oil glands.
A few different skin problems are a part of acne:
Whiteheads: hair follicle (root) is plugged with oil and skin cells
Blackheads: plugged up stuff comes up to the surface of the skin and the air touches it
Cystic acne: plugged follicle breaks deep inside in the skin, nodules or cysts form

The best way to do this is keep your face clean by washing your face twice a day with mild soap.

Bad breath, also called halitosis, is caused by bacteria that grow in your mouth.
The bacteria gather on the small food pieces left in your mouth, especially between your teeth

Tips for preventing bad breath:Brush your teeth (and tongue!) for at least 2 minutes twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, especially after meals.
Floss every day.
Replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.
Avoiding certain foods: garlic, onion, cabbage, coffee.
Visit your dentist every 6 months.
A neat trick that can reduce bad breath is to brush your tongue.
