Let me also take this opportunity to thank all the members of the ANRC who were present at ourannual meeting. It was a remarkable event with good news coming from all those who made theirreports. We hope to see you again next year with even better news.

The care provided at the ANRC not only helps our patients recuperate and function more inde-pendently, but also makes certain they know best how to take care of their personal health needs. Ourpatients are cared for during their stay by a nursing staff that is second to none. Under the dedicatedleadership of Matt Russo, the ANRCs Administrator, our nurses are able to devote themselves to thewell being of each and every patient and do all they can to make them feel at home. Indispensibleto this effort is the Director of Nursing Shakeh Bautista,RN and our Patient Coordinator Maggy

Petrosian,RN who keep all our RNs, LPNs, CNAs well informed and up to date. Our nursing service is one of the reasons our ANRC once again maintained its four-star rating

after a surprise inspection by the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services last month. With plansfor the Homes new building underway, the ANRC will further expand its ability to be the best facil-ity of its kind in Bergen County and greater New Jersey. We thank all our Members, Friends, andSupporters who have given their constant support and encouragement, and I would like to extendspecial thanks to the Friends of the Armenian Home (FAH) for their tireless work and assistance. The ladies of the FAH have always been there for the Home and we are more grateful to them thanwords can convey.q

    From the Administrators Desk

    HYE DOUN | July/Aug/Sept 2011 3

    Matthew L. Russo, LNHA,Administrator

Our quest for township approval to our amendedsite plan began to unfold before the EmersonLand and Uses Board this past quarter on July

21st and September 1st. While neighbors objectionswere being voiced aloud intermittently to deterprogress, it was the Armenians who were once againbeing attacked for their advancement.

Gripes from neighbors about increased trafc, noiseand additional storm water damage to area homes wereeasy to come by. However, one complaint in particularthat evening occurred numerous times, stirring my

emotions and fortifying my convictions: Quite a few ofthe grumblers cried out, They havent paid taxes!

When township residents rebuked us by holleringthis battle cry, I felt that our nineFounding Mothers were beingmaligned. Our founders had littlewhen this home originated butwe grew over the years, caringfor thousands within this commu-nity, with noble, self-sacricingdedication. Many times over, itwas done without pay back then,

and still occurs to this very day. Now, our 68 years ofcharitable service was being narrow-mindedly dimin-ished.

The protests are not based against Armenian eth-nicity or religion this time around, but similarities doexist between this battle, the past of our home and

    They Havent Paid Taxes!

the Armenian history. As amedical facility, we too canbe viewed as intellectuals tosome degree; its apparent.Highly educated physicians, nurses and therapists, aswell as other accomplishedprofessionals up to and in-cluding our Board Members, are routinely here. Addition-ally, negative propaganda

has been vented with false and misleading claimsthrough a small local newspaper. Public opposition isbeing rallied and the Armenian way is being viewed as

a threat to the welfare of manyonce more. Ultimately, the se-lect group of people would liketo eradicate the problem. Doesthis sound familiar to you?Thankfully for us and unfortu-

nately for them, the rule of lawand order will prevail this time.Support for our cause has been

recognized by the renewed prevailing legitimacy of ouroperation, as well as the potential for improved com-munity services and the character of the people behindour history. The matter of Armenians and taxes paidshould not be used as a means for criticism. Converse-ly, it should hold a rallying point for us all. q

ANRC Elects Four New Members at the Annual Meeting

    Our founders had little

    when this home originated

but we grew over the years,

    caring for thousands within this

    community, with noble, self-

    sacrificing dedication.

LLast month at their annual meeting, the Armenian Nursingand Rehabilitation Center (ANRC) members elected NoraTossounian, MD; Sona Mardinian, RPh; Greg Toufayan;and Bill Nouri to the ANRC Board of Trustees. Theybring good experience from their various disciplines tothe Board. At the annual meeting, plans were disclosedon the new building that will replace the current 95 yearold structure. A very good team has been formed to carryout these objectives. q

While summer ishere and we arespending a large

amount of time outdoors,we must always be mindfulof one important key to ourhealth: Drink more water.Having a sip or two at thewater fountain doesnt cutit. Each individual is different, but doctors oftenrecommend the eight by eight rule of drinkingeight 8-ounce glasses of water each day tomaintain or achieve optimal health.

Drinking two 8-ounce glasses before everymeal can help dieters shed pounds, likely becausethe water provides a feeling of being full. Eatingfoods high in water includes fruits, vegetables, soups and shakes that help ll the stomach andtake longer to absorb than drier foods.

Drinking water helps the skin remain elastic, giving it a more youthful appearance. Hydrationhelps your system remove toxins, stay regular, digest food, maintain proper body chemistry andtemperature as well as helping to prevent highcholesterol. In short, water keeps you alive andkicking.

Pain can be a sign that youre not getting enough

water, too. This is due to the uids not lubricatingyour joints well enough to keep them bending andturning smoothly. Drinking H2O before, during andafter exercise can also stave off fatigue.

When moms tell sick children to lie downand get lots of fluids, they know what theyretalking about. Staying hydrated strengthens theimmune system, reduces the risk of infectionsand even helps protect against heart attacks. So drink up! q

    In The Kitchen

Broccoli, carrots, corn, lettuce, peppers, potatoes, and tomatoesall healthy vegetableswereeach eaten by at least half of Americans at least oncea week in the past month. Thats one of the ndingsfrom a recent nationally representative survey by theConsumer Reports National Research Center. Thevegetables Americans eat leastartichokes, bok choy, eggplant, parsnips, swiss chard, turnips or rutabagas, and othersalso have a wealth of nutrients.

    Artichokes

Especially high in ber, folate, and vitamin K, they are agood source of magnesium and vitamin C as well. Theyare a smart option for pregnant women or those tryingto become pregnant, and for older adults concernedabout blood pressure and blood sugar.

    Bok choy

An excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K, they arealso a good source of calcium, folate, and potassium.Especially good choice for children and pregnant ormenopausal women.

Alan Fass, Director of Dietary Services

    Brussels sprouts

An excellent source of folate andvitamins A, C, and K, as well asa good source of ber, iron, andpotassium. They are a greatchoice for children and pregnantwomen.

    Mustard greens

An excellent source of folate and vitamins A, C, andK, as well as a good source of calcium and ber. Theyare another good choice for children and pregnant ormenopausal women.

    Swiss chard

One cup cooked has more iron, magnesium, potassium, and vitamin E than any vegetable listed above. Again,it is an excellent source of vitamins A, C, and K and agood source of calcium, ber, and vitamin E. Its nutrientsare key for growth and immune system support.q
