HYDROGENEMBRITTLEMENT
23 and 24 November 2010PARIS (France)
HYDROGEN EMBRITTLEMENTA catastrophic rupture is the image usually associated with hydrogen embrittlement. This fear, justified by many dramatic examples, has led to restrictions and precautions being introduced for application when using and implementing materials and the treatments they undergo. At the same time, new processes avoiding the risk of contact with hydrogen or minimising its effects, have been developed. Considering the difficulty of apprehension of the concerned phenomena, all these industrial developments are supported and oriented by major university research.
At present, and in the light of recent advances, new questions are emerging: have we perhaps gone too far with these limitations? Can certain precautions, which are costly, be eliminated without risk and can treatments which are held to be hazardous, be used as long as they are controlled and measured? At the same time, some processes known to be insensitive to this phenomenon, have led to sudden ruptures which call them into question.
The aim of these two days is to give an up to date report on hydrogen embrittlement. For this, a reminder of the mechanisms and methods of characterisation will be presented by reputed university teams; the problems posed by hydrogen embrittlement will be presented by major sectors (automobile, aeronautics, mechanical engineering, storage, oil industry...) and illustrated with practical examples; finally, in the third part, problems and solutions will be discussed according to the processes implemented and treatments used.
