Court finds that schools must provide age-appropriate transition assessments, regardless of student's disability

A Southern District court ruling on a Disability Rights Ohio case has made it clear that school districts must provideage-appropriate transition assessments to students with disabilities. In Gibson v. Forest Hills School District Boardof Education, the court found that the district did not ensure the student received age-appropriate transitionassessments from age 16, did not invite the student to her transition IEP meetings and did not take appropriatesteps to get the student's input, preferences and interests for her future. Therefore, the court held that the districtdenied the student a free, appropriate public education (FAPE ), which is her right. The court's decision alsoclarified that because the district failed to complete these assessments, the district did not provide her with

transition goals, as is required under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEA).

Know! To Connect With Your Kids This SummerItsAugust, which means many of us parents are hearing that all too familiar complaint from our kids,

Im bored. While we tend to want to shake our heads and groan at the uttering of this typical tween/teenphrase, we should actually consider it an opportunity to connect. Next time you hear it, try this(youll take them by surprise): You know, Im bored too. Lets go grab some ice cream.Of course you cant always just drop what youre doing, but sometimes you can and sometimes you should. If your schedule permits, try taking a day off work, put social commitments on hold, forget the laundry thatneeds folded and lawn that needs mowed and set aside a full day to be present with your child.

Family experts say that the most well-adjusted children, and those less likely to fall to negative peerpressure (like alcohol and other drug use), are the ones whose parents are warm and supportive, moderateon discipline and expectations of maturity and high in communication.
