Ever More Spectacular Hockey

Since the creation of hockey in the

late nineteenth century, the rules

have naturally evolved and the sport

has undergone constant change to

streamline the game and to make it more

comprehensible for the general public.

There has been the elimination of the

offside rule (since the 1970s), changes

to penalty corners, the incorporation of

self-passes (i.e. a player’s ability to make

a pass to himself or herself during a

free hit) and shoot-outs. The IHF, unlike

other federations, has always remained

extremely attentive to bringing about

positive changes to hockey and to

providing an ever more attractive and

spectacular image of the game.

On January 1st, two new game rules

were adapted internationally. A free hit

on the 23-meter line henceforth replaces

the long corner. The free hit must be

played at the 25-yard line, up to where

the ball went out of play in relation to

the end line. Secondly, in the case of

an offensive free hit less than 5 meters

of the circle, players may no longer put

the ball outside of the dotted circle. The

free hit can be played immediately in the

very location of the infraction, even if the

ball still cannot be played directly in the

circle.

What else? In 2013, the IHF allowed players to play the ball over the shoulder, after the success of the experiment tried during World League 3 competition.

Story of the dayParents dreaming of RioParents are an important part of the supporters in the stadium. Thierry Gerniers, dad of Red Panther Alix Gerniers, is walking around in a good mood before the game against New Zealand. He proudly wears the Belgian flag, “This is the original flag we brought from the London Olympics. It is a lucky charm. I always have to bring the flag to the games of the Panthers.” When we asked him if he is planning to go to Rio, he does not hesitate, “Of course I go to Rio if they qualify !”In the A stands a group of Italians are chatting. They appear to be parents of some of the Italian ladies. “We are here with a group of parents who support them throughout the tournament. We don’t only focus on our own daughters, but on the whole ‘squadra’. Almost all of our daughters play for the same team in Rome, that is how we got to know each other.”After the game we bumped into Peter King. He is the father of the New Zealand player Julia King. Peter has already traveled around the world in the wake of the Black Sticks. “I have been to Argentina four times. These last days I have been visiting Ghent, Antwerp, and Waterloo. It is ideal to combine travelling with watching good hockey and cheering for my daughter.”Anne-Claire, the mother of the Belgian Aline Fobe, explains that she often watches the game with her family. “Her sister, brother, and sometimes even grandma come to the stadium. We form a whole group of supporters with other families. Friends of Aline also often cheer for her”, she says. “I myself play for a Ladies team. My husband used to play at Herakles. But that is dating from another era when not even the drag flick existed.”

It was back in 1906 that William T. Gray, an Irish priest originally from Dublin and hockey player during his free time, taught several Keio University students the basics of hockey for the very first time. At three o’clock in the afternoon on 26 November 1906, a hundred or so amazed students attended the demonstration in Shiba Park as Mr. Gray took his stick in hand. But it was only 17 years later, after numerous discussions, that a real national association finally saw the light of day and started to develop the sport throughout the country. The Sakura Japan (the nickname for the women’s national team) took their first steps on the international scene in 1978 during the World Cup. However, it was not until 2004 that they first participated in the Olympic Games, in Athens. Since then, they have continued to evolve and clearly look to be one of the emerging countries on the world hockey scene. They are extremely disciplined and a physical power to be reckoned with, the Japanese are currently striving to qualify for the Olympic Games for the fourth time consecutively.

Le hockey toujours plus spectaculaire

Depuis la création du hockey, à la fin

du dix-neuvième siècle, les règles ont

naturellement beaucoup évolué et la

discipline est restée en constante

évolution pour fluidifier le jeu mais aussi

pour faciliter sa lisibilité auprès du grand

public. Suppression du hors-jeu (depuis

les années 70), modification des p.c.,

apparition de la self-pass (à savoir la

possibilité de se faire une passe à

soi-même lors d’un coup-franc) et des

Shoot-Out : la FIH, contrairement à

d’autres fédérations, est toujours restée

extrêmement attentive à faire évoluer le

hockey et à offrir une image toujours plus

attractive et spectaculaire du jeu.

Le 1er janvier dernier, ce sont deux

nouvelles règles de jeu qui ont ainsi été

adaptées au niveau international. Un coup

franc sur la ligne de 23 mètres remplace,

dorénavant, le long corner. Le coup franc

doit être joué au niveau de la ligne des 25

yards, à hauteur d’où la balle est sortie par

rapport à la ligne de fond. Deuxièmement,

en cas de coup-franc offensif, à moins

de 5 mètres du cercle, il ne faut plus

placer la balle hors du cercle pointillé. Le

coup-franc peut être joué immédiatement

à l’endroit même de la faute même si

la balle ne peut toujours pas être jouée

directement dans le cercle.

What else? En 2013, la FIH avait

autorisé les joueurs à jouer la balle

au-dessus de l’épaule, après le succès

de l’expérience tenté lors de la World

League 3.

Story of the dayLes parents, aussi, rêvent de RioLa présence des parents des joueurs et des joueuses dans le stade ne passe pas inaperçue. Thierry Gerniers, le papa de la Red Panther Alix Gerniers, se balade au Village avant le début de la rencontre face à la Nouvelle-Zélande, le drapeau belge à la main. « C’est le drapeau original des Jeux Olympiques à Londres. Ce drapeau doit impérativement accompagner partout où les Red Panthers jouent, c’est un porte-bonheur ! J’ai assisté à quasi tous les matches d’Alix, en Belgique et à l’étranger, » dit-il fièrement. S’il a l’intention de partir à Rio ? « Bien sûr que j’irai à Rio, si elles se qualifient ! ».

La tribune A accueille un groupe d’Italiens, qui s’avèrent être les parents de quelques-unes des joueuses. « Nous sommes un groupe de parents venus encourager nos filles pendant toute la durée du tournoi. Nous ne regardons pas uniquement jouer notre propre fille sur le terrain, mais toute la ‘squadra’. Presque toutes nos filles jouent pour le même club à Rome, c’est là que avons fait connaissance. » nous confie dans un français chantant, Eleonora, enthousiaste. Après les matches, nous rencontrons Peter, le papa de la joueuse néo-zélandaise Julia King. Il a fait le tour du monde en suivant les traces des Black Sticks : « Je suis déjà allé en Argentine à quatre reprises. Ces derniers jours, j’ai visité Anvers, Gand et Waterloo. C’est une combinaison idéale : un peu de tourisme, assister à de beaux matches de hockey et encourager ma fille ! ».Anne-Claire, la maman de la joueuse belge Aline Fobe, explique que toute la famille - frère et sœur, parfois même la grand-mère - se déplace souvent. « Un grand groupe de supporters de différentes familles se forme ainsi. Les amis et amis d’Aline viennent aussi souvent l’encourager. Je joue moi-même en Ladies » poursuit Anne-Claire, « et mon mari a joué à l’Herakles, mais c’était il y a longtemps… les sleeps n’existaient même pas encore. »

C’est en 1906, qu’un certain William T. Gray, un prêtre irlandais originaire de Dublin et joueur à ses heures perdues, a enseigné, pour la première fois, à plusieurs étudiants de l’Université de Keio, les bases du hockey. Le 26 novembre, à 15h00, une centaine d’élèves assistaient médusés, dans le parc Shiba, à la démonstration, stick à la main de Gray. Mais ce n’est que 17 ans plus tard, après de nombreuses discussions, qu’une véritable association nationale voyait, enfin, le jour pour développer la discipline à travers tout le pays. Les Sakura Japan (surnom de l’équipe nationale dames) ont effectué leurs premiers pas sur la scène internationale, en 1978, lors de la Coupe du monde. Mais ce n’est qu’en 2004 qu’elles participaient pour la toute première fois aux Jeux olympiques d’Athènes. Depuis lors, elles poursuivent sereinement leur évolution et se positionnent clairement comme l’une des nations émergentes du hockey mondial. Extrêmement disciplinées et physiquement redoutables, les Japonaises veulent, à présent, se qualifier une quatrième fois consécutive pour les J.O.

Hockey wordt steeds spectaculairder

Sinds het ontstaan van hockey aan het

einde van de negentiende eeuw zijn de

spelregels uiteraard enorm veranderd.

De sport is blijven evolueren om het spel

vlotter te laten verlopen, maar ook om het

meer toegankelijk te maken voor het grote

publiek. De afschaffing van buitenspel

(sinds de jaren 1970), de wijzigingen aan

de strafcorners, de introductie van de

self-pass (de mogelijkheid om een pass

te geven naar jezelf bij een vrije bal) en

de shoot-out. In tegenstelling tot andere

federaties heeft de FIH zich altijd ingezet

om het hockey te laten evolueren en het

spel een aantrekkelijker en spectaculairder

imago te geven.

Zo werden op 1 januari van dit jaar

twee nieuwe spelregels ingevoerd op

internationaal niveau. Een vrije bal op de

23 meterlijn vervangt voortaan de lange

corner. De vrije bal moet worden gespeeld

vanaf de 25 yardlijn, daar waar de bal over

de achterlijn is gegaan. Ten tweede: bij een

offensieve vrije bal op minder dan 5 meter

van de cirkel moet de speler de bal niet

meer buiten de stippellijn leggen. Hij of zij

mag de vrije bal onmiddellijk nemen op de

plaats waar de overtreding begaan is, ook

al mag de bal nog niet altijd rechtstreeks in

de cirkel worden geslagen.

What else? Sinds 2013 mogen

spelers de bal boven de schouder spelen

van de FIH, nadat deze mogelijkheid met

succes uitgetest was tijdens de World

League 3.

Ouders vormen een belangrijk deel van de achterban van de spelers in het stadion. Thierry Gerniers, papa van Red Panther Alix Gerniers, loopt voor aanvang van de wedstrijd tegen Nieuw-Zeeland nog vrolijk rond op de Village. Hij draagt trots de Belgische vlag. “Dit is de originele vlag van bij de Olympische Spelen in Londen. Het is een geluksbrenger, die vlag moet altijd mee bij de wedstrijden van de Panthers! Ik heb bijna alle wedstrijden van Alix bijgewoond, in binnen- en buitenland”, vertelt hij trots. Wanneer we hem vragen of hij van plan is naar Rio te gaan, aarzelt hij geen seconde. “Natuurlijk ga ik naar Rio als ze zich kwalificeren!”

In de A-tribune zit een groepje Italianen. Het blijken de ouders van enkele Italiaanse dames te zijn. “We zijn hier met een groep ouders die supporteren tijdens het hele toernooi. We focussen niet enkel op onze eigen dochters, maar op de hele squadra. Bijna al onze dochters spelen voor dezelfde ploeg in Rome, zo hebben we elkaar leren kennen.” Na de wedstrijden lopen we Peter King tegen het lijf. Hij is de vader van de Nieuw-Zeelandse speelster Julia King. Peter heeft de hele wereld al rondgereisd in het spoor van de Black Sticks: “Zo ben ik al vier keer in Argentinië geweest. De voorbije dagen heb ik Antwerpen, Gent en Waterloo bezocht. Het is een ideale combinatie met goed hockey kijken en voor mijn dochter supporteren.”Anne-Claire, de mama van de Belgische Aline Fobe, legt uit dat ze “vaak met de familie komen kijken. De broer, zus en soms zelfs de oma. Een hele supportersgroep van verschillende families vormt zich dan. Ook vrienden en vriendinnen van Aline komen haar vaak aanmoedigen. Ik speel zelf bij de Ladies”, vertelt Anne-Claire. “Mijn man speelde vroeger bij Herakles. Maar dat dateert uit een ander tijdperk. Toen bestonden er zelfs nog geen sleeps!”

In 1906 bracht een zekere William T. Gray, een Ierse priester uit Dublin die in zijn vrije tijd hockey speelde, zijn studenten aan de universiteit van Keio voor het eerst de basis van het hockeyspel bij. Om drie uur in de namiddag op 26 november namen een honderdtal studenten stomverbaasd deel aan de demonstratiewedstrijd van Gray in het Shibapark. Pas zeventien jaar later, na talloze oeverloze besprekingen, zag de nationale hockeyvereniging het levenslicht. Die moest de sport ook in de rest van het land populair maken. De Sakura Japan (de bijnaam van de nationale damesploeg) zetten tijdens de wereldbeker in 1978 hun eerste stappen op het internationale hockeytoneel. Toch duurde het nog tot 2004 voor ze voor het eerst van de partij waren tijdens de Olympische Spelen (Athene). Sindsdien boekten de dames steeds meer vorderingen en is Japan meer dan ooit een van ‘s werelds opkomende hockeynaties. Met hun extreme discipline en ongenaakbare fysieke kwaliteiten willen de Japanse dames zich dan ook voor de vierde opeenvolgende keer kwalificeren voor de Olympische Spelen.
